Eels ? That Look You Give That Guy, featuring Padma from Top Chef [New Vide
2009-09-23 04:19:00 We haven’t written a review of the new Eels album, Hombre Lobo, and I’m not sure why not. I own it. I like it. Now a video was just released for “That Look You Give That Guy” featuring Padma, hotty judge from my favorite reality TV show, Top Chef . The video also features Mark Oliver Everett’s ... Leonard Mynx ? Vesper [Album Review]
2009-09-22 19:31:00 Leonard Mynx is an acoustic storyteller you?ve never heard of. His words are the centerpiece in his music and the guitar, mandolin, strings and piano carry them like a leaf on the wind. His music has a dreamy quality, perfect for a nap in the park on one of these fast approaching fall days. I didn’t ... More About: Review , Album
The Black Crowes ? Before The Frost? [Album Review]
2009-09-21 15:07:00 The Black Crowes released ?I Ain?t Hiding? as a free download a few weeks back and, as a result, my expectations for Before The Frost ? lied somewhere between zero and negative three on a scale of one to ten. I reserved my opinions on the track when we posted it, but it?s a disco tune ... More About: Review , Album , The Black Crowes

Exclusive Download: Ox ? Unknown Legend [new mp3]
2009-09-18 05:31:00 Ox is releasing the follow up to 2006’s spectacularly lazy alt-country album, American Lo-Fi, on October 6th. The band was nice enough to offer HearYa an exclusive mp3 download to offer our readers/listeners. Here is “Unknown Legend ” off of the upcoming Burnout. If you don’t own it, I’d also recommend checking out American Lo-Fi asap. Ox ... More About: Exclusive , Download
Alberta Cross ? Broken Side of Time [Album Review]
2009-09-17 16:00:00 Sweet Jesus, I feel like I have been waiting forever for this album. It was two years ago that we were introduced to Alberta Cross through their wonderful EP The Thief & The Heartbreaker. I heard it and was convinced that they were going to be the next big thing. Then they went missing. The ... More About: Time , Review , Side
Chad VanGaalen releases free B-Sides EP
2009-09-16 17:14:00 I can’t mention Chad VanGaalen without repeating the how he described Canadians at a concert a few years back: All Canadians are furry little mutants made of baby diarrhea. Chad VanGaalen is a Canadian. At least he’s a generous furry mutant because he just offered a free EP of B-Sides from his latest album, Soft Airplane. According ... More About: Giveaways , Free
The Deep Dark Woods, Live Session #55, featuring two new tracks.
2009-09-15 06:53:00 We’ve been all over The Deep Dark Woods since we missed their album Hang Me Oh Hang Me as one of the best of 2007. Since then, we’ve became enamored with their Grateful Dead influenced alt-country style and when Winter Hours was released this year, it quickly became a favorite. They joined the lineup at ... Monsters of Folk ? Self-Titled [Album Review]
2009-09-14 16:00:00 For all the hype surrounding indie supergroup Monsters of Folk (Yim Yames, M. Ward, Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis), their new self-titled album does more than deliver. It exceeds my expectations and that says a lot considering how much I love Ward and Yames and that I?ve been anticipating this album for well over a year. What ... More About: Review , Album

Sub Pop offers up free download: Fleet Foxes - He Doesn?t Know Why
2008-06-07 03:38:00 Apparently Sub Pop had a little hiccup with delivering Fleet Foxes self-titled album in iTunes. The track “He Doesn’t Know Why” had a defect, so Sub Pop just decided to give the track away to everyone to make up for it. A nice move from a very classy label. Fleet Foxes - He Doesn’t Know ... 2008-06-06 16:05:00 Well, its Spring here in Chicago. Thank God. Now this usually means a few things for me– finals, a new girl, and indie folk rock. Everest - Ghost Notes
2008-06-05 16:39:00 The first track on Everest ’s debut release Ghost Notes is damn near perfect. If I listened to FM radio anymore, this is a song I’d expect to hear and actually enjoy. The band is comprised of seasoned musicians out of the Los Angeles scene who’ve spent time performing in acts such as Sebadoh, the Folk Implosion, Earlimart, Mike Stinson, Slydell, eels, John Vanderslice, and the Watson Twins. Not only do they have pedigree, but they have the chops to live up to it. Ghost Notes is a great listen from start to finish. The album kicks off with “Rebels in the Roses,” a highly addictive tune that would fit nicely in Ryan Adams’ song catalog. The band is made up of a group of good pals that love music and that’s what the album sounds like. It’s effortless. And as the album winds down with the subtly stunning “Stumble Waltz” and the slow burn of “Standing By,” I remind myself that this is Everest’s first effort....
Langhorne Slim & The War Eagles – Live at Schubas
2008-06-04 22:41:00 Last Wednesday night, I moseyed on up to Schubas to catch Langhorne Slim & The War Eagles . After listening to his most recent, self-titled album, I was really looking forward to seeing him live. See Oz’s recent review here. I showed up just in time to catch the end of the opening act, The Builders & The Butchers. They were more Woody’s taste than mine, but they were a lively bunch with a lot of strange instruments I couldn’t name. Langhorne Slim & The War Eagles took the stage a little after 10:15, and came out firing. Langhorne had about as much stage presence as anyone I’ve seen. I told my girlfriend/former HearYa photographer after the show that he reminded me of a white version of the Artist Formerly Known As Prince. She corrected me, “a whiter version of Prince.” That joke almost made up for her bringing a camera with dead batteries to the show, but not quite (hence the grainy cell phone picture above). I would have fired her if it weren’t for Oz s... More About: Live

Hearya Live Session 19 - The Acorn
2008-06-03 16:42:00 I didn’t know what to make of The Acorn as they made their way into the studio. Their subject matter is intense and the pic used in our review of Glory Hope Mountain shows their relatively serious side. Five minutes after meeting them, any preconceptions I may have had vanished away. They were just about the ... More About: Hear , Live
The Morning Benders - Talking Through Tin Cans
2008-06-02 16:22:00 Wearing an affinity for 60s inspired rock and roll on their sleeve, The Morning Benders deliver the goods on their debut LP Talking Through Tin Cans. The Bay Area quartet have hints of The Beatles, a dash of the Pet Sounds sound, and a little Zombies tossed in for good measure. Thankfully they don’t come ... More About: Music Video

The Everybodyfields - Nothing Is Okay
2008-05-30 17:47:00 Let’s start off with this statement: I love the She and Him album. It got boatloads of hype, lived up to it and has been one of my favorites this year. But couldn’t the hype machine save just one spoonful for this wonderful band out of Johnson City, TN? The Everybodyfields are every bit as ...

One Track at a Time: Phosphorescent - Wolves
2008-05-28 16:18:00 I’m a bit of a latecomer to the Phosphorescent party. I remember sampling some stuff back in ‘07, but never got fully engaged. I was watching a few Black Cab Sessions on Sunday night and found Phosphorescent singing “Wolves .” It’s not a new track, but it stunned me. Phosphorescent is a Brooklyn singer-songwriter (by way of Georgia) that writes tripped-out folk tunes that slowly seep into your skin. It’s the kind of stuff that you need to spend some quality time with to fully understand. I’d recommend listening to “Wolves” twice or thrice in a dark room and see if it agrees with you. I’m now slowly moving into Phosphorescent’s full catalog without rushing myself. MySpace Phosphorescent - Wolves Video from Black Cab Sessions More About: Time , Track

2008-05-27 17:24:00 Holy crap. These guys are better than I could have even imagined. Oz did a post on the Felice Brothers ? first album, Tonight at the Arizona, back in October. Are you buying music on Amie Street yet?
2008-05-24 21:33:00 I wrote about Amie Street back in 2006 and have always been a fan. It’s a music service where the fans determine the price of each song. The more times each song is downloaded, the more expensive they get. Prices are capped at $0.99. The beauty of it is that bands keep 70% of the ... More About: Music , Buying , Music Technology
