Bap - Wahnsinn, Die Hits Von '79 - '95 [1998]
2008-01-26 11:59:00
A German institution, the rock band Bap were formed in 1976 by the Cologne-based singer/songwriter/activist Wolfgang Niedecken. Niedecken was already well-known as Cologne's answer to Bob Dylan before he began Bap, partly because of his acoustic guitar and harmonica, but mostly because of his poignant, socially aware lyrics. Listening to the Rolling Stones and the Kinks influenced him to form a band. He named the band Bap after a nickname he took to avoid using his father's surname. Niedecken's turbulent relationship with his father lasted up until his father was on his deathbed. Their bittersweet reconciliation would become the topic of Bap's defining song, "Verdamp Lang Her," a staple of the group's live set that featured a Bruce Springsteen-styled monologue that would change a little each night. A single with 11 different versions of the song culled from live recordings over the years was released in 2005 (Springsteen and Niedecken had met in the '80s, eventually becoming g...

Nena - Nena [1983]
2008-01-25 18:20:00
The first Nena album was released at the start of 1983 and became the dominant sensation of the West German music scene throughout the year. Starting with the 1982 breakthrough debut single "Nur Geträumt," Nena arrived at a very distinct period of German pop history, the period of the so-called Neue Deutsche Welle or NDW, the German new wave. However, by 1982 German new wave music had been watered down by various bandwagon jumpers who transformed the tension- and doom-laden atmosphere of the music of the original late-'70s new wave bands into upbeat synth pop with jokey, ironic, and even romantic lyrics. Nena was immediately pigeonholed as an NDW act, but she and her band were in fact a more unique proposition: a group of musicians with a strong intuitive grasp of both classic pop and rock formulas. All five members contributed to the songwriting, with Carlo Karges and Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen providing the essential core of the repertoire. They arrived on the scene with a fully for...

Nena - Fragezeichen [1984]
2008-01-25 18:16:00
After one year as vocalist for the Stripes (who disbanded after just one unsuccessful album in 1980) Nena Kerner assembled a new band in Berlin, called Nena, with herself as vocalist, Carlo Karges on guitar, Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen on keyboards, Jürgen Dehmel on bass, and Rolf Brendel on drums. Their debut single "Nur Geträumt" became a number one success in the German speaking countries after the band's first TV appearance on the "Musikladen" TV program on August 21, 1982. From then on, however, Nena became one of the most successful pop stars Germany had ever seen, including the unique success of the original German language version of the second single "99 Luftballons" in the U.S. in 1984. In mid-1985 however, for no apparent reason, sales of Nena's next records and attendance numbers on the 1985 tour dropped, which led to the eventual end of the band in mid-1987. Peanut Butter Conspiracy - For Children of All Ages [1969]
2008-01-24 11:50:00
Ralph Schuckett, who played keyboard with Todd Rundgren, the Monkees, Hall & Oates, and others, adds a Vanilla Fudge sound to For Children of All Ages by the Peanut Butter Conspiracy , and it is a shame more of that appealing, made-for-radio production Vanilla Fudge made famous is absent from this set. Alan Brackett's vocals sound straight out of Boston band Ultimate Spinach, and that is the downside here. The vocal pretension and bleached lyrics put a damper on this party. Still, it has its moments. Barbara Robison's voice on "Try Again" is hardly Grace Slick, but it adds a hippy vibe one expects, interrupted by strange sound effects which make the listener think the tonearm has lifted off the disc prematurely. Robison's contribution to "It's Alright" puts this group closer to New Colony Six meets Spanky & Our Gang, and an intuitive producer would've known that that was the way to go. For pompousenss it is hard to beat "The Loudness of Your Silence," which would make ev...

Hall & Oates - Abandoned Luncheonette [1973]
2008-01-24 11:46:00
From their first hit in 1974 through their heyday in the '80s, Daryl Hall and John Oates' smooth, catchy take on Philly soul brought them enormous commercial success ? including six number one singles and six platinum albums ? yet little critical success. Hall & Oates' music was remarkably well-constructed and produced; at their best, their songs were filled with strong hooks and melodies that adhered to soul traditions without being a slave to them by incorporating elements of new wave and hard rockAbandoned Luncheonette, Hall & Oates' second album, was the first indication of the duo's talent for sleek, soul-inflected pop/rock. It featured the single "She's Gone," which would become a big hit in 1975 when it was re-released following the success of "Sara Smile? Herman Brood & His Wild Romance - Prinsentuin, Leeuwarden [Live, 22-06-1978
2008-01-23 14:45:00
Influenced by piano-stompers like Little Richard and Fats Domino, Herman Brood began studying at art school by the time he was 17; one year later, however, education became a secondary concern after he joined a group called the Moans. That band later became Long Tall Ernie & the Shakers before he joined one of the best Dutch blues combos of the '60s, Cuby & the Blizzards. He performed with the band during the rest of the '60s and into the '70s, but then broke off in 1974 to found a group named Stud. The following year's Flash & Dance Band was his first solo album, though the formation of the band Vitesse (with Herman Van Boeyen) in 1975 resulted in a group album as well, In Vitesse.By 1977, Herman Brood had rounded up another loose backing band, this one known as Wild Romance . The first album with the new band, Street, was followed by Shpritsz one year later. The latter album contained a surprise hit, "Saturdaynight," which hit the American Top 40 in 1979. His two al...

Black Lodge Singers - Weasel Tails Dream [2001]
2008-01-22 16:45:00
The Black Lodge Singers of White Swan, WA, are one of the most sought-after bands on the powwow circuit. The group, comprised largely of members of Kenny Scabby Robe's family, is known for their original compositions. On this release, they pay tribute to the family's late patriarch, Jim Weasel Tail. Weasel Tail was himself a respected singer and craftsperson who continued to make the rounds of the powwow trail (even after losing the use of his legs) until his death in 1975. The 13 songs on this release, all new compositions, are sung in the Blackfeet language. Here the family shows the strength that has put them at the top of their game. The drumming and singing are powerful and high-spirited, accented by yelps and hoots. It's a joyous and loving tribute to an esteemed man. J.D. Blackfoot - The Song of Crazy Horse [1973]
2008-01-22 16:39:00
J.D. Blackfoot is a Native American-themed artist who was actually born Benjamin Franklin Van Dervort in Cleveland. The frontman for an Ohio band called the Ebb Tides (as Benny Van), he re-formed the group under his most famous name around 1969 and recorded a single for Mercury called "Who's Nuts Alfred." An album, The Ultimate Prophecy, followed soon after and found the group dabbling in acid rock and folk/country-rock. The group soon melted away after the LP's lack of success ? though it's still prized in prog/psych circles ? and Blackfoot went on to record the mid-'70s albums The Song of Crazy Horse and Southbound and Gone for Fantasy Records. He retired from music in the '70s, but returned in 1988 with a new company, Sisapa Records, which signed and recorded Marshall Tucker, Paul Cotton (Poco), and Crazy Horse , as well as Blackfoot himself on the 1991 album Tokala (a sequel to The Song of Crazy Horse). Mory Kante - Nongo Village [1993]
2008-01-22 16:35:00
The follow up to the successful ?Touma? continues where that left off. Here are 11 tracks of easy and swinging dance music. The basic backing is the same but the balafon (xylophone) has a more forward moving sound than before. In addition, The Hampton String Quartet and New West Horns contribute. The disc begins sympathetically, but Mory Kante doesn?t have the power to vary the funk that, little by little, develops into a breathless march-like discomix. It improves on the tracks where Mory dares to take it easy and let the kora speak for him, as with for example ?Mansa Ya?. Also, on the songs ?Kissi Moba? and ?Bon Jour Mon Cher?, he stops and lets the kora, xylophone and flute sound uninterrupted and rescues the album. One the whole, it?s not the worst! Altan - Horse With A Heart [1989]
2008-01-22 16:30:00
From one of the premier Irish bands around comes this masterwork of fiddles and vocals. The highlight throughout the album is the parallel fiddling of Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill and Paul O'Shaughnessy. While this album predates some of their slightly better-known work, it provides the same basic set of music: reels, jigs, Gaelic vocals, etc. Ní Dhomhnaill's vocals stand out excellently over the top of the rest of the ensemble when present, and work well with the guest pianist on "The Lass of Glenshee," breaking up the fiddle and flute tracks for a bit. The technique is outstanding, as one would expect from a group with this level of acclaim. The real delight in this album is most likely the manner in which the group members show themselves to be capable of so many aspects of Irish music, all with a high level of ability. They seamlessly switch from jigs on fiddles to unaccompanied Gaelic songs to flute numbers and back. This would serve well as a nice introduction to Irish music, as ...

Not the album that was requested but Samantha ?s first album Emotion [1978] seems to be a bit rare, this one I did find already but still looking for Emotion?Allmusic.com about Samantha Sang;A one-hit wonder from the late 70s, Samantha Sang made her professional singing debut because of Barry Gibb and Maurice Gibb. Born in Australia in 1953, Samantha Sang entered the music world in 1978 singing "Emotion." Unfortunately for the singer this would be her only pop rock hit. The song was written by the popular songwriting duo Barry and Maurice Gibb, who also had their own band, the Bee Gees. The song "Emotion" was on the album of the same name. Besides this song the album included favorites from other well-known 70s soft and pop rock singers. Hits included Eric Carmen's "Change of Heart," Denny Randell's "You Keep Me Dancing" and Arty Simon's "But If She Moves You." The Bee Gees also had two of their hits, "Charade" and "Love Of A Woman" on the album. Samantha Sang has also provided ba...

Bee Gees - Living Eyes [1981]
2008-01-20 01:18:00
In terms of hit singles and precise musical vision, it would have been difficult for anyone to have to follow-up the brilliant Spirits Having Flown album, but these industry veterans created a real gem in Living Eyes which seems to have gotten lost in the maze that is their deep catalog. The title track is almost up there with "Spirits Having Flown," which is significant praise, and the song "Paradise" follows suit, pretty and passionate. "Don't Fall in Love With Me" has all three Bee Gees brothers contributing to this ballad with their trademark highly creative hooks. The one downer, unbelievable as it seems, is the hit single "He's a Liar." It just doesn't make it ? odd vocals on a theme which goes nowhere. Nicking the Top 30 in October of 1981, well after "Love You Inside Out," their final (and questionable) number one hit, the tune disrupts their staggering array of wonderful singles. To stay off the charts for two and a half years might have been fallout from the Sgt Pepper ...

101 Strings, The Petards, and The Spots - Love is Blue [1967, Vinyl]
2008-01-19 16:55:00
One of the most prolific and reliable names in instrumental easy listening music, the 101 Strings Orchestra has literally recorded hundreds of albums since its inception in 1957. Their trademark sound is built on a reverence for melody, pristine production, and a pleasant, relaxing ambience; while occasional albums have concentrated on brass, piano, guitars, and even mild rock & roll rhythms, the string section ? true to the group's name ? nearly always remains front and center, because of its lush, soothing sound qualities. Most of their albums were built around some unifying theme, whether the work of a well-known artist or songwriter, a specific topic (patriotism, holidays, et al.), TV/ movie themes, songs from a particular country, revampings of familiar tunes from other genres, and so on. The group was founded by producer/engineer Dick L. Miller, who was searching for a way to mimic the sound and style of orchestras led by "name" conductors like Mantovani, without the expe...

Bert Kaempfert - A Man Could Get Killed [1966]
2008-01-19 16:53:00
Bert Kaempfert had almost too much talent, ability, and good luck rolled into one career to be fully appreciated, even by his own chosen audience, the lovers of fine orchestral pop music. He was one of the most successful conductors, arrangers, and recording artists in the latter field, but was also a major producer and played a key (if indirect) role in the roots of the British beat boom of the early '60s, which evolved into the British Invasion of America in 1964. Berthold Kaempfert was born in Barmbek, a working class section of Hamburg, Germany, in 1923. He was musically inclined as a boy, and found that interest indulged by an act of fate when he was six years old ? Kaempfert was injured in a car accident and his mother used the money from the settlement to buy him a piano. He became proficient at the keyboard, and also on the clarinet and saxophone, among other instruments. 2008-01-19 16:51:00
Les Baxter is a pianist who composed and arranged for the top swing bands of the '40s and '50s, but he is better known as the founder of exotica, a variation of easy listening that glorified the sounds and styles of Polynesia, Africa, and South America, even as it retained the traditional string-and-horn arrangements of instrumental pop. Exotica became a massively popular trend in the '50s, with thousands of record buyers listening to Baxter, Martin Denny, and their imitators. Les Baxter - Space Escapade [1958, Vinyl]
2008-01-19 16:49:00
A real period piece, Space Escapade is a definitive slice of lounge/bachelor pad music. The music, of course, is a bit dated, although it certainly shows off Baxter 's chops as a big-band leader. One reason to get the record, however, is the cover ? two astronauts holding goblets of exotic (and potentially lethal) cocktails, surrounded by three very attractive Martian women, and in the background, a silhouette of a rocket. All cloaked in dry ice. This record has sold for decades on the cover artwork alone, and you'll see why if (and when) you pick it up. Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass - Lonely Bull [1962]
2008-01-19 16:45:00
The colossus that is A&M Records starts right here with the first album by the 1960s instrumental juggernaut known as the Tijuana Brass . True, there was no "Tijuana Brass" per se at this time; just Herb Alpert and a coterie of Los Angeles sessionmen, with Alpert overdubbing himself on trumpet to get that bullring effect. Also, Alpert was just getting the TJB concept underway; the textures are leaner, the productions less polished, and the accent is more consciously on a Mexican mariachi ambience ? the relatively square rhythms, the mandolins, the mournful, wistful siesta feeling ? than the records down the road. The hit title track (originally a tune called "Twinkle Star"!) is a cleverly structured, exciting and haunting piece of record-making ? and its composer, Sol Lake, becomes the charter member of Alpert's team of TJB tunesmiths with several more ethnic-flavored numbers. In accordance with the newly emerging bossa nova movement, Alpert does a nice, straightforward, authent...

Nits - The Nits [1978, Vinyl]
2008-01-16 20:06:00
There seems little doubt that were they not so geographically challenged, the Nits would be one of the most widely respected bands in the world today ? at least on a par with smart-as-a-whip types like XTC and Prefab Sprout. Certainly few can match their sheer creative stamina: how many other bands can claim to be still reinventing themselves after 30 years and nearly 20 albums? But the Nits come from Holland. And furthermore, the occasional tour of the U.S. and Canada aside, they quickly made it clear that their only concession to the big outside world, where real rock stars wear shades indoors, would be to sing in English. That aside, anyone wanting them to tailor their unique brand of art-pop to the demands of a broader audience could go hang. In particular, the Nits specialize in making their latest album sound as little like the last as possible ? a marketing man's nightmare. This has simultaneously guaranteed them a modest degree of success across continental Europe, where fa...

Golden Earring - Eight Miles High [1969]
2008-01-14 17:46:00
Best known in the U.S. for its hard rock material, Golden Earring has been the most popular homegrown band in the Netherlands since the mid-'60s, when they were primarily a pop group. The group was founded by guitarist/vocalist George Kooymans and bassist/vocalist Rinus Gerritsen, then schoolboys, in 1961; several years and personnel shifts later, they had their first Dutch hit, "Please Go," and in 1968 hit the top of the Dutch charts for the first of many times with "Dong-Dong-Di-Ki-Di-Gi-Dong," a song that broadened their European appeal. By 1969, the rest of the lineup had stabilized, with lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Barry Hay and drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk. They experimented with their style for several years before settling on straightforward hard rock initially much like that of the Who, who invited them to open their 1972 European tour. Golden Earring signed to the Who's Track label, which released a compilation of Dutch singles, Hearing Earring, helping the group...

Golden Earrings - Winter Harvest [1967]
2008-01-14 17:41:00
Golden Earring was formed in 1961 in The Hague by 13-year-old George Kooymans and his 15-year-old neighbour, Rinus Gerritsen. Originally called The Tornados, the name was changed to Golden Earrings when they discovered that "The Tornados" was already in use. The name Golden Earrings was taken from a song, originally sung by Marlene Dietrich in 1947 and a hit for Peggy Lee in 1948, with which they opened their concerts. Initially a teenybopper band, Golden Earrings had their first chart success with their debut single Please Go, recorded in 1965. It reached number 9 on the music charts in the Netherlands. [Wikipedia]Shortly after the release of Winter Harvest Frans Krassenburg leaves the band. He is replaced by Barry Hay (formerly the Haigs) who had shortly before that turned down an offer to join Shocking Blue. Sound Of The Screaming Day is another big hit. George Kooymans writes the single Everybody's Day for singer Bojoura, which gives her career a flying start. [Nationaal Pop In...

Golden Earrings - Just Earrings [1965]
2008-01-14 17:39:00
Long before Golden Earring were an international act, they were a typical Continental beat group, billing themselves initially as "The Golden Earrings ." Their 1965 debut was a lightweight but enjoyable effort, highly derivative of British beat circa 1964-1965, especially the Beatles, the Kinks, and the Zombies; all but one of the tunes were original compositions.
