The Verve - A Storm In Heaven [1993]
2008-01-13 19:51:00
Whereas future Verve masterpieces A Northern Soul and Urban Hymns would feature succinct song structures (for the most part) and instantly memorable verses and choruses, the group's 1993 full-length debut, A Storm in Heaven , was based on buoyant, extended psychedelic passages. Looking back today, it was an interesting and original musical direction, since at the time, angst-ridden Seattle bands (and their many copycats) were all the rage. While a few songs hint at the Verve's future penchant for composing pop gems ("Make It Till Monday," "Blue," "Butterfly"), many of the longer tracks are just as strong, especially the album's best track, the hauntingly beautiful "Already There." Also featured was the album-opening space rocker "Star Sail," the shifting moods of "Slide Away," the misty "Beautiful Mind," and the stark closer, "See You in the Next One (Have a Good Time)." A fine debut, A Storm in Heaven proved to be the important connection between the Verve's expansive early work...

Deep Six - The Deep Six [1966]
2008-01-13 19:47:00
From Southern California, this obscure five-man, one-woman pop-folk-rock group issued a self-titled album on Liberty in 1966 . From the sounds of things (and the look of the group on the cover), they were a pop-oriented folk group hastily adapting to the folk-rock craze, with their white bread folk roots showing far more strongly than any newfound rock sensibilities. In this sense, as well as the all-over-the-place repertoire of the LP, they recalled the We Five, although they weren't as good and there was a glossier Los Angeles sheen to the production. The harmonies and their bent toward bittersweet melodies also bore some similarities to the Mamas & the Papas and the Peanut Butter Conspiracy, though they weren't even remotely the same league as the Mamas & the Papas and not nearly as rock-oriented as the Peanut Butter Conspiracy. Their best song, the original "Rising Sun," had an uncharacteristically gutsy fuzz guitar line, played as if the guitarist was afraid of burning...

Humble Pie - Smokin? [1972]
2008-01-12 19:10:00
After a couple of years of relentless touring, Humble Pie capitalized on their loyal U.S. following to capture the market with this, their third album. Although lead guitarist Peter Frampton was replaced by Clem Clemson ? an excellent player ? the band remained essentially the same. Led by singer/guitarist Steve Marriot's soulful wail, the group enjoyed a huge hit from this record, "30 Days in the Hole" ? the track which defined the Pie's not-so-subtle appeal. The rest of the record is equally funky and intriguing. Stephen Stills guests on "Road Runner 'G' Jam," playing some nasty Hammond organ fills. In the end though, the group defined themselves as the undisputed leaders of the boogie movement in the early 1970s, as a band. De Div - Europa Is Hier [1982]
2008-01-12 19:08:00
Tom Grant - Just The Right Moment [1985]
2008-01-12 19:06:00
Tom Grant , who has impressive technique and a likable style, has spent most of his recording career making music that purposely appeal to a wide crossover audience, combining together jazz with pop and R&B. His father was a tap dancer who owned a record store and his older brother Mike played piano. When he was four, Tom Grant began playing piano and drums. He graduated from the University of Oregon and then went to New York with Jim Pepper's Pow Wow band. He earned a masters degree in education and was teaching high school social studies in Portland when Woody Shaw heard him playing at a weekend after-hours gig. Shaw offered Grant a job with his group and the experience soon led to more extensive work with Joe Henderson, Dexter Gordon, Charles Lloyd and Tony Williams (1979-81). Grant cut his first solo record in 1976 for Timeless and in 1979 he formed his own band which was open to the pop music that the keyboardist loves. In 1983 Tom Grant started recording a lengthy series o...

Aunt Mary - Loaded [1972]
2008-01-11 17:56:00
One of the early and by many considered to be one of Norways definitely best prog bands. Their music is a mix of heavy hard-rocking tunes, combined with clear influences from the symphonic genre. The more symphonic sound however didn't appeared until their third, and last studio album, "Janus". A great concept-album to start with. If you want the more thundering sounds coming from AUNT MARY, look for 1972s "Loaded ". High-skilled musicians combined with good, creative melodies makes AUNT MARY a important Norwegian band to become acquainted with. [Prog. Chilliwack - Wanna Be a Star [1981]
2008-01-11 17:50:00
Formed in Vancouver as the Classics and later the Collectors, Bill Henderson (guitar, vocals), Claire Lawrence (keyboards, sax), Glenn Miller (bass), Ross Turney (drums) and Howie Vickers (vocals) recorded several singles from 1967 to 1970, but changed their name to Chilliwack after Vickers and Miller left the group. The band had several Canadian hits in the 1970s and early '80s, from their 13 albums: Chilliwack (1970; for Parrot), Chilliwack (1971; for A&M), Music for a Quiet Time (1972), All over You (1973), Riding High (1974), Rockerbox (1976), Dreams, Dreams, Dreams (1976), Lights from the Valley (1978), Breakdown in Paradise (1979), Wanna Be a Star (1981), Opus X (1982), Segue (1983) and Look In, Look Out (1984). Chilliwack - Chilliwack [1970, Vinyl]
2008-01-11 17:47:00
Unlike the later, slicker hit-makers they became (with "My Girl, Gone, Gone, Gone," "Baby Blue," and "California Girl"), this is a fiery young band making its debut. The reflective "Rain-O" aside, the strongest cuts by the Vancouver quartet are the rave-ups "Sundown" and "Chain Train," which open and close the album. The flute and sax work of Claire Lawrence distance the band from the competition as well as from a Northwest Native Indian music influence. The Collectors - Grass and Wild Strawberries [1968]
2008-01-11 17:41:00
This is a strange album, from that brief moment when it looked like rock and theater could merge productively and profitably. The band hooked up with poet-playwright George Ryga and the result was a stage work called Grass and Wild Strawberries ? there's no telling if it was ever produced, or what the reaction was if it did make it to a theater (though one can guess, from the fact that nobody has ever heard of it, what any audiences and critics must've thought). And then there's this album of the score. All of the music was written by the band, and the lyrics by Ryga, and the funny thing is, it's not half bad. They still fall back a little too much on the pseudo-Gregorian sound, which only the Yardbirds really pulled off successfully in a rock context ("Still I'm Sad"), but for a good part of this album, their sound is lyrical, enthusiastic, unforced, and rather pleasing, and creative ? at least, they abandoned their Moody Blues pretensions in favor of a bit more of a roots roc...

The Clash - Give 'Em Enough Rope [1978]
2008-01-11 17:37:00
For their second album, the Clash worked with the American hard rock producer Sandy Pearlman, best-known for his work with Blue Öyster Cult and the Dictators. The teaming was quite controversial within the punk community, and the sound of Give 'Em Enough Rope is considerably cleaner, yet the more direct sound hardly tamed the Clash. While the record doesn't burn with the same intense, amateurish energy of The Clash , it does have a big, forceful sound that is nearly as powerful. What keeps Give 'Em Enough Rope from being a classic is its slightly inconsistent material. Many of the songs are outright classics, particularly the first half of the record ("Safe European Home," "English Civil War," "Tommy Gun," "Julie's Been Working for the Drug Squad") and "Stay Free," but the group loses some momentum toward the end of the record. Even with such flaws, Give 'Em Enough Rope ranks as one of the strongest albums of the punk era. [Allmusic.com]Track list;01 - Safe European Home. 3:5002...

Riley Lee - Oriental Sunrise [1996]
2008-01-11 17:29:00
Oriental Sunrise features four duets for shakuhachi and koto with nature sounds to enhance the atmospheres. Riley Lee, one of only a few westerners to become a "Dai Shihan" (grand master) on the shakuhachi, performs with Satsuki Odamura, Helen Castello, and/or Tony Lewis on koto. Bruce Emsley provides field recordings. This is a very calm and peaceful set of acoustic, pastoral ambience. Lee's performances are breathtaking and soulful. The accompanying kotos add just enough of an edge to keep the soundscapes interesting. This meditation treasure will appeal to fans of Nawang Khechog, Life in Balance, and Stan Richardson. Maurice Gibb - The Loner [1969-1984, Unreleased Album - Bootleg]
2008-01-10 14:15:00
After the Bee Gees broke up for a short time at the end of the 1960s, Maurice Gibb, Robin Gibb, and Barry Gibb each recorded solo albums in 1970 that were unreleased, though material from each of those projects has been bootlegged. While The Loner does contain tracks that probably would have been on Maurice Gibb's solo album, it's not what the actual album would have been. It's missing some recordings known to have been made around that time, and it also adds some other recordings from the early 1970s that wouldn't have been considered for the set. Even if it's only an approximation of what might have been, even if the quality of some of the cuts is below official release standard (though it's never truly bad), and even if the production of some of the numbers seems obviously unfinished, it's still a pretty interesting glimpse of what Gibb's solo album might have sounded like. It's not too far off what the Bee Gees were doing on their group recordings in the late 1960s and ...

The Smoke [UK] - The Smoke [1967, Vinyl?]
2008-01-09 16:20:00
This hard-to-find title contains one dozen sides from the U.K. psychedelic/pop rockers the Smoke , and was issued on the short-lived Motown subsidiary Gull Records in 1967. Essentially, this disc is a North American version of the German long-player It's Smoke Time (1967), consisting mostly of tunes cut during the quartet's May through November 1966 recording sessions that produced their biggest hit, the acidic ode to LSD, "My Friend Jack." Smoke featured Mick Rowley (vocals), Mal Luker (guitar), Zeke Lund (bass), and Geoff Gill (drums). Stylistically, the direction that the Smoke initially explored was more akin to the aggressive mod sound closely aligned to The Who and the Kinks. However, there is a prominent pop music element unifying the catchy melodies and providing hooks hearkening back to earlier British Invasion era artists. "We Can Take It" sports a chuggun' rhythm and clever bridge reminiscent of the Hollies' "Look Through Any Window," or Spencer Davis Group's "Keep On...

Montezuma's Revenge - Hits Again! [2002]
2008-01-09 16:14:00
From their site; Mont ezuma's Revenge is one of the leading male a cappella groups around. Founded in 1985 this Dutch group has reached a high level of vocal perfection. The group is always exploring the boundaries of a cappella singing and sometimes even shifting them. The mixture of originals and covers in pop, rock and soul style and the combination of theatre and music both contribute to the originality of Montezuma's Revenge. The group is now touring with the shows "De Montezuma Code" (Dutch theatres only!) and "Pop Art".Track list;01 - 3rd Leg - Roof Garden. 3:5302 - Where Do I Begin. 3:4003 - Do You Wanna Dance. 3:1104 - When Susannah Cries. 3:3505 - Schmetterlinge Im Eis. 3:4306 - If I Sing. 4:2607 - Down By The Lazy River. 2:2608 - Wake Me Up Before You Go Go. 3:0809 - Hotel. 4:0910 - I Ain't Gonna Let You Break My Heart Again. 2:5211 - You'll Never Walk Alone. 2:2512 - Tempted. 6:59[192k]

Nylons - Seamless [1986]
2008-01-09 16:09:00
The Nylons signed with Attic Records in 1981, just two years after forming in Toronto. Though the original members were Denis Simpson, Paul Cooper, Marc Connors and Claude Morrison, Simpson soon left. Ralph Cole replaced him for a year, but Arnold Robinson replaced Cole in 1980. The a cappella group's self-titled debut appeared in 1982, as did One Size Fits All. After 1986's Seamless, the Nylons hit the Top 30 with a remake of Steam's "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye." The album it appeared on, Happy Together, also did well. Paul Cooper left the quartet after 1989's Rockapella and was replaced by Micah Barnes. Four on the Floor was released in 1991, but Mark Connors died the same year. New addition Billy Newton-Davis had been a successful solo artist (Love Is a Contact Sport, Spellbound) prior to joining the Nylons for 1992's Live to Love. Run For Cover was released in 1996 and Wish For You followed four years later. [Allmusic.com]Track list;01 - The Lion Sleeps Tonight. 3:1202 ...

[witch I do with pleasure]We’re Late For Class is a college band with rotating members who play a kind of music I label as Alternative, Improvising but the terms Psychedelic and Ambient also came to my mind. And I must say that I like this album very, very much, smooth playing, very likable…20 posts on their blog so far and the latest post is this best of album, all free downloads provided by We’re Late For Class so there is more you can get from them, all no commercial stuff and only available on the blogsphere.A quote from their latest post; A greatest hits? Are you guys kidding? Well... sorta. It's just that with 19 posts of original, improvised music (and a Faust cover), who in their right mind is going to weed through it all to hear what we're up to? Certainly not you! So, for those curious about stoned improvisors who give away their music, he...

Daltrey was much more successful, commercially as well as artistically, when his solo career was a side project. Parting Should Be Painless, the first album Daltrey made after The Who's breakup in 1982, contains some interesting tracks, including Bryan Ferry's "Going Strong," which gives you an idea what Roxy Music would sound like if Daltrey was its lead singer, and "Somebody Told Me," written by Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox of the Eurythmics. Roger Daltrey - Under A Raging Moon [1985]
2008-01-05 19:02:00
With songs unleashed from the soul of Roger Daltrey, Under a Raging Moon is a short voyage into the psyche of an aging rock star who has plenty to reveal. Daltrey's bitterness about growing older while gasping for every last breath of a youth gone by gives this album heart and a certain emotional dimension, coming to a head on the title track. His thunderous but passionate ode to his former friend and drummer Keith Moon is a fervent downpour of frustration that can be truly felt inside every line of the song. A spectacular drum solo from Mark Brzezicki is a modest tribute to the late Moon and adds depth indefinitely. A multitude of drummers appear on the album, musically paying their respects, including Cozy Powell, Roger Taylor, and Stewart Copeland. The guitar slashing "Let Me Down Easy," penned by Bryan Adams, is a perfectly formulated rock song intensified through Daltrey's energy. While this song and all of the others act as outlets for his pent up anger, each one is sung, an...

Pater Moeskroen - Nooit Van Gehoord? [1990]
2008-01-04 20:02:00
The Scene - This Is Real [1985, Vinyl]
2008-01-04 19:59:00
In 1979 formeert hij The Scene .
Meteors - Hunger [1980, Vinyl]
2008-01-02 19:47:00
A bit of stormy seas for the Dutch band the Meteors in 1980, lots of changes whit group members but they produce a very good album, although the single Together Too Long doesn’t get into the Dutch top 40 and the number of sales of this album is a bit disappointing, in my opinion a very underrated album…Track list;01-Charms or chains02-Bombita03-Work04-No way in no way out05-Don't talk tome06-Candy07-Monday night exile08-It sucks09-Together too long10-Cindy11-Cubist boy[128k]

Savage Rose - Dødens Triumf [1972]
2008-01-02 19:44:00
An unheralded landmark in art rock, this features Savage Rose keyboardist Thomas Koppel's score for a ballet by Flemming Flindt (the title translates to "Triumph of Death"). Nearly entirely instrumental (one song features Annisette on vocals), this is one of the finest classically influenced rock records. Moody and melancholy, at times almost doomy, yet always melodic, this 40-minute selection of haunting pieces prominently features the group's unique underwater organ sound and makes for compelling listening. Pete Townshend - Who Came First [1972]
2008-01-02 19:40:00
Pete Townshend's first solo album was a homespun, charming forum for low-key, personal songs that weren't deemed suitable for the Who, as well as spiritual paeans (direct and indirect) to his spiritual guru Meher Baba. Who fans will be immediately attracted by the presence of a couple of songs from the aborted Who concept album Lifehouse (much of which ended up on Who's Next), "Pure & Easy" and "Let's See Action." The Who did eventually release their own versions of both those songs. But Townshend's own versions aren't the highlights of this record, which shows a folkier and gentler side to the Who's chief muse than his albums with the group. "Sheraton Gibson" is a neat tune about rock & roll road life, and "Time Is Passing" takes very subtle inspiration from Baba. Most of the rest of the album contains some of the most unusual pieces Townshend has released: his acoustic cover of Jim Reeves' "There's a Heartache Following Me" (recorded because it was one of Baba's ...
