The Challengers - Surfbeat [1963], K-39 [1964] & Go Sidewalk Surfing! [1965
2008-08-12 17:13:00 One of the most popular of the early Southern Californian surf bands, the Challengers were formed by drummer Richard Delvy after he left the Bel-Airs, who had recorded one of the very first surf singles, "Mr. Moto." Their debut LP, Surfbeat (early 1963), was one of the very first all-instrumental surf albums and sold 200,000 copies, an astronomical number for a regional act. Recording several albums over the next couple of years, most of their repertoire consisted of covers of popular rock and surf tunes; undeniably exciting at the time, their lack of originality can make their work generic to wade through. The moody "K-39," also available on surf compilations, is their most famous cut. Jonny and the Shamen - Adventures in Espionage [2000]
2008-08-11 17:53:00 Phil Dirt; t's been a year and a half sine their last release. This a definite step up, with tight well crafted songs, and excellent surf sounds. The theme may be espionage, and the writing may lean that way, but underlying that is solid surfability. An excellent release.[Reverb Central]There must be something in that southern water that creates some of the most imaginative surf/punk outfits. However, unlike Atlanta sci-fi geeks Man or Astroman?, the Saraland, AL outfit of Jonny and the Shamen contains a heavy riffage of surf and hi-tech secret agent gadgetry. Each track off of their debut Adventures in Espionage is a blasting effort of spy themes that would be appropriate for the opening credits of Mission Impossible, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., or Get Smart. Even if this idea has been beaten to death since the Ventures cover of "Secret Agent Man," Jonny and the Shamen brew a fast-paced energy and up the octane, making this genre fresh and creative. Super Stocks - School Is A Drag [1965]
2008-08-11 17:21:00 Perfectly summing up the School Is a Drag sentiments of every red-blooded American teenager, the Super Stocks , a studio-only combo of veteran L.A. session pros led by legendary record producer Gary Usher, helped fuel the universal California daydream like nobody's business. Once again, the third full LP from this fabled west coast aggregation was full of tire-squealing, super-charged muscle cars, deeply-bronzed surfers heroically riding 30-footers and a sun-drenched platoon of bikini-clad young girls doing the watusi and frug till the sun went down! Rincon Surfside Band - The Surfing Songbook [1965]
2008-07-27 10:15:00 Although on the surface, this may seem like a collection of pedestrian surf-era instrumentals, there is more here than meets the eye. Possibly the first ever L.P. release by the newly-formed Dunhill Records (named after one of the founders, Bobby Roberts, who had been a lounge dancer in a group called 'The Dancing Dunhill's'), this project was a launching pad for P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri, the production and songwriting team that eventually contributed to the careers of The Mamas & The Papas, Barry McGuire, and many others. The Surfing Songbook is essentially a cash-in to the Beach Boys-Jan & Dean surf/skate craze at a time when Brian Wilson and Jan Berry were for the most part abandoning the field. It is notable for some excellent performances, particularly from a very young P.F. Sloan on great reverb-drenched surf guitar, as well as studio aces Hal Blaine, Joe Osborne, Larry Knechtel, et. al.. Also contains exquisite liner notes from Elliott Kendall, a West Coast music... More About: Band , Hot Rod , Rincon
Torpedoes - Good for the Country [1996]
2008-07-27 09:32:00 Phil Dirt; Brian Pool is Hell-bent on being the fastest man of surf guitar, and the snazziest flashiest dresser behind a Silvertone. Jason Brown is bound for the short-line of bassists capable of playing the lead melody while the guitarist caries off the rhythm, and being the funniest play-his-bass-in-your-face stage/audience practitioner in the business. Brandon Watson is destined for the machine gun hall of fame, with rolling military precision awards. Overstatement? Maybe! Maybe not. Having just seen them for the first time in a few months, I'd say, you see 'em, you'll agree. This is the debut CD from this San Francisco band, who alone occupy the new genre of Submariner Surf. They have recorded 17 instrumental tunes for us, in five basic styles. If ever you had a fancy for skate punk and surf and wondered at the ultimate merger of the two, then you should look no further. Matching Suits - The Matching Suits [2005]
2008-07-18 13:04:00 Phil Dirt; Slovenia's Matching Suits first issue shows a lot of promise. They are taking a bit of a different tack with surf than their countrymen, but they clearly get it. Some excellent tracks here. The production needs more work. The mix is sometime marred by overbearing rhythm guitar that buries the bass and drums, and detracts from the lead, and lead that's just not out front enough. Drums are often nearly unheard as well. All that said, I like this set and I think if you have a soft spot for vintage surf on the restrained side, this will please you [Reverb Central]Track list;01 - Tough Luck (Uberman). 2:3802 - Surface. 2:0503 - First Lesson. 2:2104 - Beach-head. 2:1405 - Pu?čava. 2:0606 - Happy Days. 2:4907 - Vešrlu. 4:2308 - University Boulevard. 2:3809 - Guns Don't Argue. 2:3310 - Teenslasher. 1:5111 - Pipeline. 2:1712 - Shake'n'Stomp. 2:0613 - Calhoun Surf. 1:4514 - Cryin' Guitar. 5:26192k @ [RapidShare] or [Sendspace]
Duals - Stick Shift [1961, Vinyl]
2008-07-13 11:24:00 Two California teenagers scored with this Ventures-like instrumental in the early '60s big enough to cut this follow-up album for the Sue label. It's a ragged blend of instrumentals (90% of which sound like knockoffs of the title track, itself a knockoff of the main riff of "What'd I Say") and a couple of stray glee club-like vocals. This album does have legs with the surf music crowd, however, and will appeal to fans of twangy guitar, which it's loaded with. GT Stringer - Sandcrack The Soundtrack [2002]
2008-06-22 10:10:00 Phil Dirt; GT Stringer are one unique band. their music is strongly jazz based, with a honk-and-squirt drive that's humorous and quite cool. This is augmented with great guitar and playful ideas. There's no doubt about the surf content, and no other band with a sound that's even close. Splendid Australian surf music from dedicated longboarders. The CD is a soundtrack to a nonexistent film, and on the inside is the image of the film's theme. A more appetizing shot has never been. Surf Teens - Surf Mania [1963]
2008-06-04 20:57:00 Phil Dirt; This is a reissue of a rare album, originally released on the cheapo Sutton label. The songs are all all covers. The playing is better than the usual cover band release, mostly being vanity issues. This set is well played and has a unique character. The disc includes several previously unreleased sessions, the entire Sutton album, plus a track from the "World Of Surf ing" compilation. The album is much more rare than it is important, but it is a worthwhile look at one of the lower echelon bands of the Central Coast of California. Heavily influenced by the Original Surfaris, this band was from Atascadero, California. I had read somewhere that they were from Morro Bay. I'll trust Deke Dickerson's liner notes on this one. The recording style was from the "you play quiet and it comes out loud here" school, which mostly means low energy performances. The sound is consistent, but damped with the high end rolled off to compensate for the mostly vinyl sources [Reverb Central]Tra... More About: Teens , Mania

Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet - Wow Flutter Hiss [1986] & Sport Fishin' A
2008-05-28 21:22:00 Best known for supplying the theme song to the popular TV comedy show The Kids in the Hall, Toronto's largely instrumental trio Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet originally formed in 1984, consisting of members Brian Connelly (guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), Reid Diamond (bass, lead vocals), and Don Pyle (drums, backing vocals). The band merged punk (ą la the Dead Kennedys) and surf (ą la the Ventures) sounds together to create a highly original style, resulting in a steady stream of EPs/singles issued throughout the mid- to late '80s. These included such quirky titles as "Love Without Words," "Wow Flutter Hiss '86, Schlagers!," "Live Record With Extra Bread and Cheese," "Explosion of Taste," and "Reid Does Neil."By 1989, a local comedy troupe (and friends of the band) was given their own TV show, Kids in the Hall, which used the Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet track "Having an Average Weekend" as their theme song. Hypnotic IV - Live (Too Loud, Outta Tune, and Barely Gettin' Paid) [2001]
2008-05-25 12:54:00 By combining a reverb energy with the traditions of obscure 60s surf-punk, the Hypnotic IV proclaimed the trademark sound of hypnofonic. Originating in Sacramento, California, the four-piece of Jay Lemen (guitar), Mike Clark (bass), Tony Cale (drums) and Andy Vaughan (guitar) first got together in 1997 without any use of a vocalist. Upon their debut EP Hypnotica! released in 1999, the addition of 16mm films were showcased into their live set. [Allmusic.com]Phil Dirt; 'Bout time these lads issued a CD. Richie Allen - Stranger From Durango [1963, Vinyl]
2008-05-19 20:26:00 One of the unheralded architects of the Southern Californian surf sound, Allen (real name Richie Podolor) played a lot of session guitar on surf and hot rod records in the early '60s, particularly for producer Gary Usher. He also played guitar for drummer Sandy Nelson on the classic "Teen Beat" and other instrumentals, and recorded quite a few surf instrumentals under his own name, although these were rather placid and routine when stacked up against the best of the genre. Reverting to his real name, Podolor racked up production credits with Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf, and Three Dog Night in the late '60s, and remains active behind the boards today. Ready Men - Get Ready!! [1964]
2008-05-11 10:02:00 Phil Dirt; The Ready Men were a garage surf combo from Minneapolis, who have been legendary ever since their rabid version of "Shortnin' Bread" emerged on "Surfin In The Midwest Volume One". While that was a "Surfin' Bird"-like vocal, they also recorded some mighty screaming surf instros. At first sight, this CD ran my blood cold with anticipation of an hour's worth of their vintage vault purge from '64. Well, that's sorta what's here. There are 5 studio tracks, including "Shortnin' Bread" plus another Midwest traditional frat song "Wine Wine Wine", and 3 cool instros. As for the rest, they are all really crude recordings, half being from a department store event, and the other a rehearsal, both sounding like ambient recordings, amateur at best. Tijuana Bibles - Apartment Wrestling [2000]
2008-05-10 18:00:00 Taking their name from explicit comics that originally surfaced in the 1930s, the Tijuana Bibles formed in Toronto in 1997 to provide the soundtrack for local Super-8 filmmaker Stacey Case's project, Arriba! The Parkdale Wrestler. When the band made the leap to live venues in 1999, they created stage personas to conceal their identities. With the use of Mexican wrestling masks, the band members became: the Crippler (vocals, guitar), Blue Demon (bass, vocals), la Felina Negra (saxophone), Sonny-Boy Liston (guitar), and Buddy Lee Roth (drums, vocals). The Tijuana Bibles' music is a wild, often humorous mix of garage rock, punk, and surf. After a year of tireless self-promotion and countless live shows (which saw the band share the stage with such artists as the Sadies, Deadbolt, and El Vez), the Tijuana Bibles released their first independent CD, Apartment Wrestling , in 2000. Fireballs - The Fireballs [1960]
2008-05-10 17:37:00 This New Mexican group was the primary exponent of the Tex-Mex sound in the instrumental rock & roll of the late '50s and early '60s, landing three Top 40 hits, "Torquay," "Bulldog," and "Quite a Party." Paced by the clean, economic guitar lines of George Tomsco, their moody, laconic arrangements and dextrous picking was similar in essential respects to the Ventures. The Fireballs, who used the same Norman Petty-run studio in Clovis, NM, as Buddy Holly, had a much more prominent "border" music feel to their melodies than the Ventures. The Ventures, on the other hand, had a much more full-bodied and versatile attack, accounting to a large degree for the Fireballs' comparatively slight place in history. The Fireballs, who occasionally sang on their recordings, are actually much more famous for their controversial contributions to the Buddy Holly legacy. In the early '60s, in association with Petty (Holly's former producer and manager), they overdubbed some of Holly's demo tap...
Revels - Intoxica!!! [1995, Vinyl]
2008-05-04 13:36:00 The Revels were an early '60s instrumental rock group. While they were not a surf group, since they pre-dated surf music, they were a big influence on the later surf groups. The Revels' most famous song, "Church Key", became a surf music staple that was covered by countless surf groups. The group had a raunchy saxophone-oriented sound. [Johnny Heering, Amazon.com]Phil Dirt; The Revels recorded Church Key and created an instro standard covered by the minions. They were a Central Coast band, with a decidedly frat orientation, and not very dissimilar from the the Pacific Northwest bands of their day, except for the overlay of the surf lifestyle on what they did. Their recording range from downright cool and fun to modestly interesting. Their impact on the music scene far outweighed their own success, and the legend lives on. Centering their music on energy, their psychotic rock songs are of the heady kind. While their repertoire is mainly of the genre, they included in their 7" a classy, Morricone-influenced track, thus giving body to their disc. A nice EP if there ever was one. [Allmusic.com]Phil Dirt; Well, this is an interesting disc! Stef and Arno are a self-described surf band from France, but they are more like a mean disaster post punk global threat infusing a little surf into their mayhem than a surf band. They succeeded to make it into the final round of the competition, where they finished in second place; however, they still received a record deal, which led to the release of their debut CD, Surf Panic '95, which, despite being an instrumental album, sold well. Usher utilized the best studio players of the day, who also worked with the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean, including Billy Strange, Glen Campbell, Leon Russell, Ray Pohlman, Hal Blaine, and Jerry Cole. Originally issued on Capitol in early 1964, Thunder Road was the first full-length LP by the Super Stocks and includes 11 cuts loosely based around car themes, specifically the title track, which had been a 1958 hit for actor Robert Mitchum from the film of the same name. The remaining ten cuts are similar high-speed hot rod anthems, including "Trophy Run," "Draggin' Deuce," "Hot to Trot," and "Custom Caravan."
