Krontjong Devils - Moovin' with The Krontjong Devils [1994]
2008-04-19 10:55:00 Phil Dirt; Monster surf from northern European shortboarders. This is really heavy trad reverb, and way cool! Compressed and poundy. I'll bet these kats are as wild as the Ape Men! Pressure is a late Pyramids single track, and Moovin' is a Lee Hazelwood number first recorded by the Astronauts and Al Casey. Where do all these Dutch boys learn to pick like this? Dutch surf monsters the Krontjong Devils have a super heavy sound, over reverbed, thumpy and thick, and marginally defined on tape (not well recorded). Jan Phenomenema - guitar, El Cheazo - drums, Crazy Gerry - bass, and Daddy 007 - guitar. This ep also includes a raunchy cover of Ron Wilson's Surfer Joe, and That's Cool - That's Trash [Reverb Central]Track list;01-Moovinī. 1:3002-Surfer Joe. 1:5703-Pressure. 1:5804-Thatīs Cool, Thatīs Trash. 1:48192k @ Boppeslag [RapidShare] or [Sendspace]
Neptunas - Let Them Eat Tuna [1998]
2008-04-19 10:40:00 L.A.'s the Neptunas turn in a freewheeling and fun set of surfy, twangy rock candy that makes up for its lack of originality with sparkly charm. One gets the impression ? even without vocals ? that Pamita (bass) and Leslita (guitar) care more about mood, or at least planned on playing these songs exclusively at wild parties where no one would listen for clean chord changes. "Waves as tall as women!" a voice intones at the beginning of "White Caps." The girls proceed to rock out a number treading water between Dick Dale and cocktail jazz. "Mummy Walk" recalls the wacky progression of the Munsters theme, while late-album standouts "Bong Water Babies" and "Lullaby of the Leaves" roil along with goofy-footed grace. Sure, Let Them Eat Tuna threatens to spill at any moment. But so does your 12th mai tai. Fans of all things retro are sure to eat up this record and the Neptunas' kooky personas ? a mid-album tribute to famous female top fuel racer Shirley "Cha Cha" Muldowney is a surefire ...
Impala - Teenage Tupelo [1999]
2008-04-13 19:07:00 Impala was formed in Memphis, TN in the early 1990s. Their first long player, El Rancho Reverbo, was co-produced by the legendary Roland Janes (Jerry Lee Lewis' guitar player and session player at Sun Records) at Sam Phillips Recording Service. After receiving rave reviews and gaining exposure playing one-niters across the South East, Impala was picked up by West Coast label, Estrus Records. The band?s first release on Estrus was Kings of the Strip, recorded at famed Easley Studio in Memphis. Following the release of this album, Impala toured relentlessly, appearing at Garage festivals such as Garage Shock, Sleezefest, Crap Out and Dixie Fried and appearing on shows with guitar legends Dick Dale and Davie Allen and the Arrows. Over the past decade numerous films and television shows have featured the band's music. Most notable is Impala's arrangement of Henry Mancini's "Experiment in Terror" in the George Clooney's, Chuck Barris biopic, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. After fe... More About: Teenage
Phantom Surfers - The Exciting Sounds Of Model Road Racing [1997]
2008-04-13 19:04:00 Surf music revivalists the Phantom Surfers formed in early 1988 around the lineup of guitarists Johnny Bartlett and Mel Bergman, bassist Mike Lucas, and drummer Danny Seelig. Originally founded at the 11th hour to fill a cancelled gig at the University of California Santa Cruz, the group quickly emerged as an underground favorite, famed for their mystery-kitsch image (Lone Ranger masks were de rigeur) and carefully choreographed stage act; the debut Phantom Surfers LP 18 Deadly Ones followed on Norton Records in 1991 amidst a flurry of 7"s, and in the years to follow, the band remained frighteningly prolific, issuing albums and singles on over a dozen different labels (including discs with guitar legends Dick Dale and Davie Allan). In time, Seelig left the group to join the Hi-Fives and was replaced by drummer Russell Quan; in the wake of The Great Surf Crash of '97, Bartlett also handed in his resignation, with Maz Kattuah assuming his guitar duties. 2000's XXX Party featured con... Apemen - Are You Being Surfed [1994]
2008-04-13 19:03:00 Phil Dirt; Holland's Apemen are one of the loudest surf bands around. They live in the garage, play with the big boys in the shorebreak, and pummel every competitor. V. A. - Elemental Instrumentals!! [2005]
2008-04-12 10:12:00 Founded in tiny Sauk City, WI, in 1959, Cuca Records would go on to become one of the most prolific independent labels of the 1960s ? home to everything from polka to gospel, founder Jim Kirchstein would release about 2,000 singles and 150 LPs during the company's 14-year existence, many of which spotlighted the Midwest's vast garage rock scene. The superb Elemental Instrumentals assembles 28 incendiary instrumentals from Cuca's heyday, most if not all of them making their first-ever appearance on CD ? this is guitar rock at its rawest and most vital, making up in sheer frenzy what it lacks in sophistication. Highlights include the Tornados' "Scalping Party," the Zakons' "Wasted," the Voodoos' "Voodoo Walk," and Frank Gay & the Gayblades' "Hades." Blue Hawaiians - Live at Lava Lounge [1997]
2008-04-08 20:47:00 Phil Dirt; Recorded 0n 4/16/95 at the Lava Lounge , this is both a clean recording and a spiffy showcase for this fine and unique band. The recording is understated, but not underwhelming. It speaks clearly of the band's prowess. The Blue Hawaiians play with deliberate meter and accuracy. Their sound is rich and easy to listen to. It's trad tiki bar surf enhanced with lap steel. There are a few vocals here, but we won't hold that against them. As the title indicates, this CD is a live session, and as such, has a bit more audience noise than I like to hear, though it's also not evident during most of the performances. Human Tornados - The Human Tornados [1997]
2008-04-06 20:15:00 Phil Dirt; A pedigree doesn't hurt. Bill Schunk was the co-founder and lead guitarist with Beat Rodeo (I still love the Coyote 12 inch "Do You Mean It"). Pete DeCosta was with Bobby Radcliff and Kristi Rose and the Midnight Walkers, as well as the Walking Clampetts. Ted Lawrence was guitarist with the Supertones as well as Purple Knif. Their music is also slated to be included in the upcoming film Anthem. With influences ranging from the Shadows (melodic sense, not archetypical echoplex twang), the Ventures (pristine sound, not bored again chameleons), the Sentinals (Tommy Nuņes melodic sensibility), and Antonio Carlos Jobim (not the rabid approach of Brazil 2001, but rather the measured intricacy of the Raybeats. This CD is very melodic, and well produced. The seasoned talent allows the players to make their sacred noise without leaning on volume or speed. Like the Aqua Velvets, they have an imagery in their work that carries it far beyond the mere limits of instro. It's more tha... More About: Human
Aquamen - Do the Alkeehol! [1999]
2008-04-01 19:29:00 A drunkenly raucous surf-revival group, the Aquamen formed in San Francisco with a shifting lineup that has included guitarist "El Capitan" Mike Drake, bassist Matt Harris (ex-Overwhelming Colorfast), and drummer "Lookout" Steve Bank; Drake and Harris formed Oranger upon their eventual departure. The group issued two independent albums, 1995's All Tanked Up and 1996's Gin-o-Sonic, before signing with the Heyday label and recording their first nationally distributed album. Do the Alkeehol was released in 1999 with a lineup of "Ensign" Nat Bletter (guitar), "First Mate" Srini Kumar (bass), Turtle "Skipper" Meuniot (guitar), Zack "Cruise Director" Pitt-Smith (saxophone, organ, percussion), and "Cabin Boy" Vixx (drums).Although a surf band, it seems odd that this San Francisco sextet named themselves the Aquamen when even a cursory glance at their song titles suggests that, like W.C. Fields, they never touch the stuff. Rather like Man or Astroman?'s retro-futuristic schtick, these "l...

2008-03-26 18:31:00 Phil Dirt; This is an excellent CD. This Connecticut band is riding less traveled waves with their trio sound and reggae look. Phantom Raiders - New Sound '67 [1967]
2008-03-23 12:11:00 The Phantom Raiders were ages 11-14 when they cut their first and only album, New Sound '67, on the Justice label. Based in North Carolina, the sextet consisted of Randy Lee (lead guitar-age 11!!!), Doug Almond (bass), Mitch Miller (drums), Eddie Smith (rhythm guitar), and Ricky Lee (rhythm guitar, lead vocals). They closed 1966 with an appearance at the Teen-a-Rama contest at the Charlotte Coliseum. Their repertory consisted mostly of covers of then popular hits, including "I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone, " "Gloria, " "Day Tripper, " "Devil With A Blue Dress On/Good Golly Miss Molly" etc. The group had a fairly lean sound, and a very punkish sound as well, whether they were covering Monkees songs, Doors tunes, or surf instrumentals. The twin rhythm guitars, coupled with Mitch Miller's fairly aggressive drumming, gave their covers a lot of punch and a pretty heavy attack, even when its obvious that their reach exceeds their grasp, as on "Day Tripper." Ricky Lee's singing betrays a...
Death Valley - Que Pasta [1994]
2008-03-22 13:01:00 Somewhere there'll always be a realm where Dick Dale, Ennio Morricone, and good Mexican food all come together. Or so it seems, based on the evidence of this smart, funny, and rockin' album. Whoever Death Valley might in truth be (identities for the instrumental quartet are given as Pepper, Blue, Mear, and Joe), the Texas band's knowledge of what makes a song smoke is unquestioned. With production mostly done by Big Boys legend Tim Kerr, one wants to suspect that more famous names are having fun here, but in truth, who knows? The song titles are part of the overall fun ? thus, "A Fistful of Pasta ," "Lammie Don't Surf," and the wonderfully ridiculous "The Larry Storch Song Trilogy" ? but the group clearly knows it's not just about laughs but entertainment. If spaghetti western surf music is the be-all and end-all of Death Valley's existence, it does such a good job with it that any complaints about lack of variety would be pointless. Not that the foursome can't sneak some othe...
Trashmen - Baja [19xx, Vinyl]
2008-03-20 15:20:00 A Minneapolis rock & roll band, they evolved from Jim Thaxter & the Travelers, recording one single under that name ("Sally Jo"/"Cyclone"). The group comprises Tony Andreason (lead guitar), Dan Winslow (guitar/ vocals), Bob Reed (bass), and Steve Wahrer (drums/vocals). Unfairly depicted as a novelty act, the Trashmen were in actuality a top-notch rock & roll combo, enormously popular on the teen-club circuit, playing primarily surf music to a landlocked Minnesota audience. Drummer Steve Wahrer combined two songs by the Rivingtons ("The Bird's the Word" and "Pa Pa Ooh Mow Mow"), added freakish vocal effects and a pounding rhythm to the mix, and, by early 1964, the group was in the Top Ten nationwide with "Surfin' Bird." Though the group continued to release great follow-up singles and an excellent album, their moment in the sun had come and gone; they disbanded by late 1967/early 1968. They re-formed in the mid-'80s and continued to play locally until Wahrer's death. ... More About: Vinyl , Baja
Slackmates - Hot Car Girls [2000]
2008-03-18 21:18:00 Phil Dirt; The Slackmates are among the harbingers of the new super clean ultra melodic sub genre of surf. Take a helping of Mose Allison's and a dose of Professor Longhair's piano, Herbie Mann's flute, Jack Cassidy's bass, and Cozy Cole's drums, get Henry Mancini and Lee Hazelwood to write some cool tunes, dress the band in pastel sports coats, beige cardigans, and Hush Puppies, add the energy of the Insect Surfers, and you get a general idea what this is like. It took only fifteen seconds before you are overcome by a come-hither quality that simply draws you in. It puts your guard down for you. By the time the amazing last track rolled past the tape whirling head, you are a goner. This band has picked up where Eric Lenchner left off with the Ultras, but slower and more serious. If Man or Astro-MAN? were tight and polished and better writers... It's mostly dry guitar tones. There are some surprisingly accurate as-if-they-were-there-then-with-a-DAT numbers that hold their own ... More About: Girls
Rumblers - Boss Surf Music Classics [1997]
2008-03-16 13:05:00 Phil Dirt; This band still demands that you not call them a surf band. They did some cool surf, and quite a bit of cool R&B, and were mostly an instro band. Their big hit "Boss " was followed by "Boss Strikes Back," "Son Of Boss," and "Tootenanny" as further attempts at the charts. The drummer was Adrian Lloyd, whose other band Adrian & the Sunsets were a surf band. This CD is their album, plus some tracks, but not all of their output appears here. Goldentones - Atmosphere [1993]
2008-03-11 16:53:00 Phil Dirt; Much of this is non-melodic riff rock better suited to backtracks than upfront listening. The sound is remeniscent of the Evasions, but without the cute hooks. Langhorns - The Langhorns [1998]
2008-03-09 08:46:00 Phil Dirt; I'm glad to see that this album has been released. The advance CD-R I reviewed in February definitely peaked my interest, and now you can also cruise the tracks of this interesting CD. It sports some very nice and new arrangements of standards, as well as a good selection of originals. This Swedish band seems to be the first from their country to do justice to surf instrumentals. Much of the guitar work here is nearly liquid, not reverbed surf, but fluidly flowing, with notes almost blending one to another. A fine CD. Duane Eddy - Surfin' [1963]
2008-03-08 12:31:00 If Duane Eddy's instrumental hits from the late '50s can sound unduly basic and repetitive (especially when taken all at once), he was vastly influential. Perhaps the most successful instrumental rocker of his time, he may have also been the man most responsible (along with Chuck Berry) for popularizing the electric rock guitar. His distinctively low, twangy riffs could be heard on no less than 15 Top 40 hits between 1958 and 1963. He was also one of the first rock stars to successfully crack the LP market. That low, twangy sound was devised in collaboration with producer Lee Hazlewood, an Arizona disc jockey whom Eddy had met while hanging out at a radio station as a teenager. By the late '50s, Hazlewood had branched out into production. Before Duane began recording, his principal influence had been Chet Atkins, but at Hazlewood's suggestion, he started concentrating on guitar lines at the lower end of the strings. His opening riff of his debut single, "Movin' and Groovin'," w...
Retroliners - Surf Avenue [2003]
2008-03-04 17:54:00 Phil Dirt; The Retroliners always seem to me to be a band stuck between potential and delivery. Some very nice writing is often held back by uncomplimentary production and unsympathetic rhythm. What's interesting to me with this release is the realization that the thing that doesn't work for me in the Retroliners recordings is the mix and lack of chemistry. Guitar and bass panned off center, detracting from the lead guitar's role as voice. From an arrangement point of view, all of the songs are a little too unchanging, which gets in the way of some very good melodies and playing. Silencers - Powered By Twang [1997]
2008-03-01 14:49:00 Phil Dirt; Like it says on the back of the CD, "Link Wray & the Ventures rolled into one big ball and heaved through Dick Dale's living room widow"! Amen to that, especially the last track with the insane name of "Birdy Num-Nums". I'm not sure if the CD is titled Powered By Twang or not, but it's on the license plate of the street rod on the cover, so it will do. If not, it should be. A pretty solid CD, only a couple of snoozers, offset easily by the shredding power of the rest [Reverb Central]Track list;01 - Bleach Pit. 3:2002 - Journey To The Stars. 2:2103 - Martini Lunch. 2:5304 - Woof Woof. 2:3905 - Mr. Transmogrifier. 3:3206 - Drag Queen. 2:1607 - Run Kitten Run. 2:2008 - In From Cold. 3:5109 - Lawn Job. 2:0810 - rough Rider. 3:0911 - Spaceman. 4:2612 - Birdy Num-Nums. 7:22[160k]
Infrareds - Infrareds [2000]
2008-02-29 20:00:00 Phil Dirt; Pacific Grove, near Monterey, California is home to this new trio. The writing is good and fairly original, and the playing is excellent. I would imagine this is a powerful band live The biggest problem here is the mix which buries the power of the guitar. If they go to a second pressing, I'd strongly recommend remixing these sessions. Aqualads - Hotbox [1999]
2008-02-22 16:52:00 Phil Dirt; The Aqualads have a sense of humor in their writing that is consistent throughout. While riff based, it often transcends what is otherwise a limitation to create a completely enjoyable and infectious listening experience. With some Russian influences in the melodies, "The Volga Boatman" would seem a like cover for them to do. The band's sound is a little like the instrumental side of the Trashmen, but slightly less edgy. A very enjoyable CD, which also includes some spiffy PC-only video and "slack fun." It looked like that for a long time, but eventually bassist Gerry Sobie (ex-Woody) and drummer Mike Taylor (ex-Agriculture Club) joined what was to be named The Bigfoot Rocketship - Calgary's coolest (and only) three-guitar instrumental surf attack force! Here are two demo recordings made with the help of cool dude Donny Payjack in 2007.
