Voodoo Court - Nuclear Vacation, The Party Is Over [2002]
2008-02-17 13:03:00 Still obsessed with thermonuclear radiation and catching a good wave, Voodoo Court returns with more of their campy surf rock on Nuclear Vacation : The Party 's Over. Where their previous record had shown the group grow in a more technically sound outfit, this album shows the band in a more hook-oriented place. Writing instrumental passages with catchy guitar phrases strewn about, the band seems to be improving their overall songwriting on this effort. A contributing factor may be the bleak atmosphere that hangs over the album, as evidenced by the darkly humorous photograph on the back cover depicting their skeleton mascot with Albert Einstein. Their fear of atomic energy is stronger on this album than it has ever been, leading to several tense instrumentals that are the polar opposite of the lighthearted beach rock that populated their debut. A few songs are still quite fun, including a pleasantly smarmy cover of John Barry's "007." But the serious vibe that hangs over the record a... More About: The Party
Jon & the Nightriders - Charge Of The Nightriders [1983]
2008-02-15 16:11:00 Although probably still in nursery school when guitar instrumentals filled the American record charts, twang-bar king John Blair and his three cohorts brilliantly re-create the innocence and excitement of that long-lost genre. With resplendent, ringing tones, vibrato and mountains of reverb, Surf Beat '80 pays homage with ourteen numbers, including a few soundalike originals and a selection of covers that proves the band's dedication to--and familiarity with--their forebears. All of the tracks sound the same, but that's the idea. Great! The live LP reprises some of the studio record's items, but incorporates new material and spot-on renditions of additional classics like "Pipeline" and "Hawaii Five-0." Splashback!, produced by the legendary Shel Talmy (to no particular effect, other than perhaps spiritual), features a six-minute medley that touches on eleven instantly recognizable melodies in one seamless nostalgia romp. Charge of the Nightriders is a compilation.Self-billed as ...
Razorblades - Get Cut By The Razorblades [2003]
2008-02-12 17:54:00 German guitarist Martin Schmidt's alter ego Rob Razorblade (and his brothers Rocco Razorblade, Romeo Razorblade and Rizzo Razorblade) are behind Get Cut By The Razorblades, a fifteen track instrumental surf extravaganza. Reverb Central's Phil Dirt writes, "Martin Schmidt's previous CD's just hinted at what would happen with a band. The Razorblades are the fulfillment of that promise. There are some very fine tracks here, wit big and powerful, yet delicate and fluid sounds. Quite a fine CD." The twin guitars of Rob and Rocco cut through the mix like a scalding knife through hot butter - hang ten with the latest from the active and creative mind of Martin Schmidt. Eliminators - Unleashed [1997]
2008-02-10 13:07:00 Phil Dirt; I first heard LA's Eliminators on Tri-Surf Records' Planet Surf CD. Since then, I've played "Bone Cruncher" umpteen times on Surf's Up!. A few months back I saw them in Santa Cruz, and I was completely blown away! They were very powerful, authentic as hell, played gorgeous vintage equipment (drool), and had a delivery like none since the Original Surfaris! I had the opportunity to record them at a long board wing ding in Santa Cruz at the National Guard Armory. I also recorded them when they returned to Santa Cruz for the first annual Woodies On The Wharf. Leader Preston Wilson plays a great rhythm guitar, Joe Kurkowski plays a killer lead, Frank Hughes plays a solid surf bass, Doug Harlow plays his brand new drums, and Billy Swanson is the best vintage surf sax player I've heard in years, and I usually don't like horns at all, save for Steve Douglas' classic surf squonks on songs like "Banzai Washout." They understand the genre like guys who were there in '62, an...
Original Onions - Grill Skills [2000]
2008-02-09 14:06:00 Phil Dirt; Columbus, Ohio's Original Onions take a fresh approach to their songs. Using surf and other instro styles as a foundation, they have generated a unique envelope from which to make music. Most of these tracks are covers, but the arrangements are quite good. This is an mp3 (well, ogg vorbis to be precise) album that can be found at InternetArchive.org. Many players will not read the files. WinAmp (PC) and Audion 3 (Mac OS X) do just fine with it. Aside from the harsh left-right guitar mix, this is a superb set of well played music. The link mentioned in the review is redirected to Live Music Archive, if you search on Original Onions you get 2 search results but no Original Onions. But I did find some other live surf acts over there?PS. Kai Winding - More!!!: The Theme from Mondo Cane (Aka Soul Surfin') [1963,
2008-02-06 17:07:00 A strict surf album this is not, despite the packaging and a few titles. More is really the classic, best-selling album launching Kai Winding 's mod sound. Actually, it is Claus Ogerman and Winding's sound, helped out in no small part by Kenny Burrell on guitar. Except when obviously imitating standard surf guitar, Burrell provides texture, specifically the "water sound" popularized by Vinnie Bell. Within this warm bath, as it were, the piercing electronic ondioline shimmers icily. The rhythm is basic "big beat" rock, and melody never really has a chance to escape blues figures, which is just as well. "Soul Surfin'" (also the reissue title of the album) is the longest track at 3:50, and with the others at around the two minute mark, the whole thing splashes by like a breaker. But just as a quick dip in the Pacific elicits an appetite, More leaves you hungry for, well, Mondo Cane #2 [Allmusic.com]An early "Surf" album featuring the guitar of Kenny Burrell. Mighty Gordinis - Kiss My Wheels [2000]
2008-02-05 20:54:00 Belgian Neo-Surf. The Mighty Gordinis play aggressive and trashy frat based noisy garage rock with surf based instros.Phil Dirt doesn?t like them that much [just 2 stars] but I like them so that?s why the post.So have a listen to it and judge for your self?[7 vocals and 7 instrumentals on this album, track 9 and 11 are 128kbps, rest 192]Track list;01 My baby wants to brainwash my mind. 2:3402 Soul samurai. 2:1703 Let's party all night. 2:1704 Tornado chasers. 2:2205 My little blue Gordini. 2:3306 Huntsville. 2:1207 Next stop Pussyville. 2:1208 Theme from Cream pie. 2:1909 The Truth Is Under the Hood. 2:3110 Minge surfin'. 2:1111 Jungle Stroll. 2:4812 Monsieur Michalon. 2:1013 Power jet. 1:3514 -The rat pack is back. 2:31[192k] More About: Kiss , Wheels
Pyronauts - Surf Or Die [2001]
2008-02-02 16:47:00 Phil Dirt; This is the first real CD release for the Pyronauts. 15 surf instros played in a trad style with some inventive variations and arrangement ideas. The sound of the band is a little like Sacramento's Hypnotic IV, but slower and more delicate. I find this CD easy to play repeatedly, particularly "Go-Go Girl," the silky lap steel "Sleep Walk," and the soft approach to "Baja." Nice surf release. Tom & Jerry - Guitar Greatest Hits [1961]
2008-02-02 16:41:00 Tom and Jerry . Of course NOT pre-?Simon & Garfunkel?. Anyway Tom (= Tommy Tomlinson, best known as Johnny Horton's sideman) and Jerry (= Jerry Kennedy), both rather known Country guitarists, plays very well on this album.Tom and Jerry, along with Hank Garland, Harold Bradley and Kenny Harston, plays the hits of that time. The arrangements are not so hard and swingy, but their guitar plays are inevitable. Very fine.Recorded at Owen Bradley Studio, Nashville, TN on October 29, 1960.(the liner notes say ?This album was recorded one week before Tommy Tomlinson was in the auto accident which took the life of the famous Johnny Horton.? The day Johnny Horton suffered car accident was November 5, 1960.) Reventlos - Essential Reventlo [1996]
2008-01-31 14:03:00 Phil Dirt; What's that lurking in the weeds along the side of the road... looks like a bunch of normal geeks having some kind of twisted identity crisis... why, that must be... The Reventlos! From the worn club-ways of the city of angels come four veterans in search of relief. Doing the hang at a Hellecasters show, Gregg & Matt detected a twinge joy creeping across their collective brow when they discovered it was all right not to have a singer, and not do be playing morbid & depressed songs. "Hey, we could do that!" echoed somewhere in the gray matter. Having no particular pigeon hole they wanted to fill, and having played in every kind of band that ever was, they went for sound capsules instead of a formulaic sound. Every song tells it's own story with it's own sound, so variety becomes the watchword. There's no mistaking it's the Reventlos, it's just every tune is a new and different experience. There's Death Surf, Turnip Truck Twang, Space Invader Bottleneck Tweak... More About: Essential
Star And Key Of The Indian Ocean - Surf Strike! [2002]
2008-01-28 13:48:00 Phil Dirt; This is an interesting release. The sound is shallow, perhaps ambient, but much of the music is fresh and spunky. If the Squares peaked your interest, this surely will too. Pastel Six - The Cinnamon Cinder [1963]
2008-01-26 16:28:00 Phil Dirt; Having previously only heard their hit single "Cinnamon Cinder" and it's instro B-side "Bandito," I had little to base an understanding of the band on, and even less to justify their reported extreme popularity as house band at Bob Eubanks' "Cinnamon Cinder" club. After listening to this whole CD, it becomes clear that they were one fun band, unpretentious, and utterly silly. They embraced the pure fun or rock 'n' roll without any pretext of art - just good fun. From this new view, I can easily see how they were the party band of choice on weekend nights at the CC. This is the sort of band that creates a perfect backdrop for your party, not the sort of band you'd sit listening to, mesmerized by the artistry. Too too fun. Oh, yeah, besides the handful of totally fun pop vocals, there are a bunch of really cool instros as well. [Reverb Central]A very good instrumental album re-released in 1998, just only a few tracks are related to surf but if you like the oldies you w... More About: Namo
Exotics - Go Go Guitars [1996]
2008-01-23 14:40:00 Phil Dirt; I think the Exotics are having an identity crisis. There's a wide spectrum of unfocused sound here. Some exotica/lounge, some rock, some bison bop, and some surf. The good tracks are really good, and the others are really marginal. The covers are mostly too common, except for Lariat and Casbah. I'm glad I have it, but would have liked more focus. Some of the production is really not complimentary to the performance, almost amateur in nature. Clean, just not complimentary to the tune. Others are brilliant. I have to wonder which were the accidents. Ah well. Still, the CD is nice. I think the artwork suggest more lounge/exotica then there ism, and the Ventures pose of the back is not represented in the sound except for the trashing of Whittier Blvd.. A mixed bag for sure. Let's see what they do with the next CD. [Reverb Central]Track 16 is indeed 9:35 but has a gab with no sound at all, leading to a so called hidden track….Track list;01 Prelude. 0:5502 Sandoway. 2:4503... More About: Guitars
Astroglides - Penetrate With [2001]
2008-01-21 21:21:00 It is not very common to find a band that succeeded to shape a brand new musical genre. The Astroglides, who coined the term 'Surf Core' to describe their own blend of dark surf and metallic thrash-core managed to galvanize a new power tool that retained the true essence of surf music with guitars played through vintage Fender amps, reverb units and speakers with the aid of a slashing theremin and exotic musical instruments. Since their formation in 1997, the Astroglides have been crafting unique instrumental and vocal Surfcore tunes, alongside and separated from both the Israeli musical mainstream and the local alternative scene. Leading their own crusade, the band released their first two albums "Penetrate with" and "Fondling with" in the Israeli independent label Fast Music in 2001 and 2002, respectively. Later joined their third effort "Channel Surfing with" a record that was based around TV and movie instrumentals, including cover versions of obscure theme songs from old Isra...
Astroglides - Fondling With [2002]
2008-01-21 21:19:00 Phil dirt; This is the second album from Israel's Astroglides. 9 great instros and 10 hardcore vocals with the defiant fatalism of the never-ending battlefield they live in. Mariners - Wrong Planet! [2000]
2008-01-21 21:17:00 Phil Dirt; Atlanta, Georgia is home to the Mariners . This is their first release. Some really nice tracks, some infectious stuff, a few brilliant moments, and all very precise and clean. Mostly covers, some are less traveled than others, and in most cases, while the arrangements are pretty straight forward, the precision of the playing and the cross between surf and the Ventures places the CD in good position for enjoyment. It's particularly nice to see John D. Loudermilk, Danny Amis and the Penetrators covered. There's no new ground broken, but this is significantly more listenable than most cover discs. The originals are well written and executed as well.Track list;01 - High Plains Surfer. 2:3902 - The Hearse. 2:1803 - Windy And Warm. 2:3004 - Wrong Planet . 2:3605 - Searchin' My Soul. 3:0106 - Cruisin' The Kam. 2:1907 - Secret Agent Man. 2:0808 - Lamento A-Turbo. 3:0209 - Mr Moto. 2:0310 - Surfin' St Helens. 2:0711 - Apache. 2:5412 - Journey To The Stars. 2:1813 - Runaway. 2:...
Iskre - Singlovi [1964-65]
2008-01-15 15:35:00 EP 1 track 1-4 [1964] EP 2 track 5-8 [196?]EP 3 track 9-12 [1965]This one is a collection of Iskre his EP’s/7”, at least that’s what I think. What I did find out that the first 12 tracks are 3 EP’s, each one contains 4 tracks the rest are maybe collected by a fan?A lot of question marks on this collection/album and some guessing from me, Yugoslavian band?, Singlovi means discography?, the tags say Vis Iskre, means Band Iskre? However the guessing is not imported, what’s imported is the music and I like this collection/album.You can hear from the sound that this one is really from the 60’s and that makes it likable for me although I don’t think this is a vinyl rip, the quality is far to good for that, said that every thing is possible of course nowadays with the equipment there is available…The music itself are oldies mostly taken from other artists like many bands did in those days, the fun part is that the 5 vocals are in the Yugoslavian[?] language, the other 13 tra...
Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited - Fluid Soundbox [1998]
2008-01-13 11:20:00 The Fluid Sound box, the second full-length album by Ernest Maeschi and Karen Diblitz, is chock-full of '50s and '60s-inspired instrumentals, albeit done with late-'90s flair and flourish. According to their original label, "delving into the backgrounds and personal lives of the intensely private Maeschi and Diblitz was difficult, and to be honest, their lifestyles make them sound like international jet-setters." The bio goes on to say that "Karen Diblitz works for the European Formula One racing tour and travels the world while Ernest Maeschi seems to be unemployed but is able to purchase expensive musical instruments for his recording studio and travel the world at whim." Regardless of whether any of this is rooted in fact or not, this duo — hailing from Zurich, Switzerland — is obviously talented, and skilled at lovingly (re)creating music that, at one time, might have found its way onto the soundtracks for a wide variety of mod '60s films, grindcore and exotic Italian exp... Ghouls - Dracula's Deuce [1964]
2008-01-13 11:15:00 The Ghouls were an in-studio-only creation of writer and producer Gary Usher, designed to cash in on two current crazes in 1964, hot rod tunes and campy monster movies. Bobby "Boris" Pickett had just hit big with "Monster Mash," so Usher — who had tremendous success stamping out Beach Boys-like hot rod tracks — decided to combine the two genres in one package, and the Ghouls were born. Officially one album, Dracula's Deuce, was issued on Capitol in 1964. Among the veteran L.A. session players Usher used on the project were Rick Burns, Chuck Girard, Joe Kelly and Richard Podolor, with Burns providing most of the lead vocals. Goofy and offbeat, the album is mostly a historical curio, but its cartoonish veneer, with songs like "Little Old Lady From Transylvania" and "Be True to Your Ghoul," gives it a special and loopy appeal. Agent Orange - This is the Voice [1986]
2008-01-08 18:39:00 The long-delayed second Agent Orange album isn't quite Living in Darkness part two, though it's little different from that album in many ways — same nuclear-strength attack that's equal parts surf and punk intensity, catchy and threatening all at once. That said, it's a strong album on its own, with the small changes in the basic sound meaning a lot in context. For one thing, Palm stretches his singing voice more here than before, adding more of the reverb that helped flesh out earlier songs like "Somebody to Love." The results are delights like the opening two numbers, the creepily paranoid "Voice s (In the Night)," and the equally psychotic poppy rave-up "It's In Your Head." His strong semi-spoken declamations still rule the roost in general, but tweaking the basic style just a bit pays off here as a result. Musically, the band nails things as always and then ups the ante just that little bit more, as with the angular, new-wave-without-sounding-like-it verses on "Fire in the...
Tailgators - Swamp's Up [1994]
2008-01-08 18:35:00 Don Leady the leader of the band is the singer, songwriter, guitarist, accordianist and producer with a vision. He puts together an audio gumbo of Gulf Coast styles blended with rock seasonings. A native of Cool Valley, Missouri, Don Leady continues to experiment with the guitar to find new techniques and sounds. It certainly doesn't stop with the guitar, he's gone into fiddle, steel guitar, and most recently the accordian. His education came from masters of the art, Chet Atkins, Les Paul and later BB King, because their music was readily available. He heard the Ventures and Duane Eddy a bit further down the line and loved their style. "Have Guitar, Will Travel" by Duane Eddy freaked him out totally, it was amazing. He caught Joe Maphis and the Collins Kids on the TV show, Ranch Party, and Joe Maphis made a huge impression on him. Joe Maphis became one of Don Leady's idols. Hula Hounds – Release the Hounds [2003]
2008-01-04 19:57:00 Phil Dirt; This is an all cover release. Some original variations are employed, keeping it from being just another cover release. I particularly like their arrangement of Billy Idol's "White Wedding." The Hula Hounds are guitarists Mike Cincola and Jack Booth, accompanied for this disc by bass and drums. Torquays - A Date With The Torquays [1999]
2008-01-01 16:33:00 Guitar repairman extraordinaire Steve Soest, and his three Orange County, California surf/ho-daddie cohorts, strap on and plug in to the vintage gear, delivering a set of strictly instrumentals that sound like they were all cut in 1962. There's a real unpretentiousness and straightforwardness about the group's playing on this 17-track collection that gives their retro take on the material here a refreshing edge; they're playing this music this way because they're into it and have the form fully mastered. There are highlights galore with great takes of "Journey to the Stars," "Ghost Riders," "Shake 'N' Stomp," "Bumble Bee Twist," and the fuzzed-out-to-the-max "Nervous Tic," closing things out with the beautiful acoustic-based "Peace Pipe." There's retro and then there's just flat right and the Torquays truly deliver the goods on this disc. Consider this the great lost Del-Fi or Capitol surf album for the late 1990s. Ups - Ups [19??]
2007-12-27 11:24:00 Phil Dirt; The Ups come from Pisa, Italy. They are a mighty aggressive female trio (Cristina Mannari - guitar, Chiara Cusino - bass, and Caterina Canale - drums). They take influences from all over the map, like the Pyramids, the Jimmy Castor Bunch, Roger Corman, Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band, Jane and Peter Fonda, Ed Sanders (Fugs), Duane Eddy, Henry Winkler, Link Wray, the women of the Cramps, Grace Kelly, Joe Dalessandro (posed for cover of the Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers, the Mummies, and Bo Diddley. They seem to loathe the lounge thing, printing "fuck bongos" on their liner. So, from that list of input comes a unique output of major fuzz and surf, of Davie Allan and Link Wray, of the Pyramids and reverb. This eight song 10 inch contains seven instros and one vocal, "U Pussycat Stop," which is a Fuzztones sounding number with a definite 60's garage snarl. Solid first effort from a solid Italian combo. Quiets - Take a Flight With [2001]
2007-12-22 16:13:00 Phil Dirt;Finland's Quiets have been making soft rock Euro style instro albums for quite some time. While mostly on the soft side of the aisle, the musicianship is very high caliber, and the recordings very good. They are in some ways a natural extension of the sound established by the Shadows, borrowing from players like Al Caiola, and targeting a mature audience. This CD sports pristine guitar instrumentals for softer moments. Kilaueas - (Las Exentricas Adventuras Del) Profesor Volcanova [2005]
2007-12-22 15:52:00 Phil Dirt; This is the second album from the Kilaueas. It displays a big step forward. Well developed songs with a very attractive sound, consistently performed in very strong arrangements. There's lots here for the surf fan, particularly is you're a sucker for the damped reverbed rhythm, like me. If you like the Bambi Molesters, Jim Messina and the Jesters, and the Surf Raiders, you'll like this CD. Deuce Coupes - Hotrodder's Choice [1963]
More articles from this author:2007-12-19 16:24:00 Two albums were released by the Deuce Coupes in 1963, one on Crown Records (Shut Downs) and one on Del-Fi Records (Hotrodder's Choice ), and although both were full of the hot rod-themed songs and instrumentals that were popular at the time, they were actually two different groups sporting the same name. The Del-Fi version of the Deuce Coupes grew out of the Avantis, formed by brothers Lolly Vegas and Pat Vegas, who would go on to fame in the 1970s as Redbone. The duo recorded Hot Rodder's Choice as the Deuce Coupes backed by a group of crack L.A. session players, including Glen Campbell, Hal Blaine, Tommy Tedesco, and Leon Russell. By 1965 the bottom had dropped out of the hot rod boom, and the brothers Vegas dropped the Deuce Coupes name and moved on to other ventures. The Crown Records version of the Deuce Coupes was a group of session players thrown together to capitalize on the drag strip craze.
