Phantom Surfers - The Music from the Big-Screen Spectaculars [1992]
2008-12-28 20:07:00
Masked San Francisco surf 'n' instrumental revivalists the Phantom Surfers never met a gimmick they couldn't pull off with more nostalgic verisimilitude and humor. From their on-vinyl flirtations with the big-in-their-own-minds slot car racing fad to their worship of the late-'60s cult classic film Skater Dater, the Phantom Surfers walk it like they talk it. Play the Music From the Big Screen Spectaculars finds the Surfers as a quintet, with Trent "Big Drag" Ruane of Frisco garage punk pals the Mummies on guitar alongside Johnny "Big Hand" Bartlett and Mel "Frostbite" Bergman on the other two twangy, reverb-soaked guitars, plus Michael "Daddy Love" Lucas on bass and Maz "Tender Pants" Kattuah on drums. The cuts here are, as you may have guessed, culled from the soundtracks of such '60s cheez classics as Rat Pfink a Boo-Boo, Bikini Beach, and Gammera, as well as from South Pacific ("Bali Hai") and Blood Orgy of the Leather Girls, a contemporary B-movie made in the sexploitation ...

Mighty Surf Lords - Mental Surf [1999]
2008-12-21 12:35:00
Phil Dirt; In some ways, The Mighty Surf Lords reminds me of Frank Novicki's Guitar Junkpile, but with a little less Link and a little more surf. The sound sometimes has that saturated Fender Mustang through an Fender reverb tank into an aging Fender Showman tone, while at other times floats prettily upon a drifting raft. Excellent set. Sandals - The Spirit of Surf [1995]
2008-12-21 12:32:00
The Sandals were the first true surf-rock group to score a major surf film, virtually defining the sound of the genre with their soundtrack to director Bruce Brown's landmark The Endless Summer. Originally dubbed the Twangs, the group was formed in San Clemente, California in 1962 by guitarist Walter Georis and his keyboardist brother Gaston -- recent transplants from Belgium, the siblings brought with them the profound influence of Europe's most popular instrumental band, the Shadows, while lead guitarist John Blakeley, bassist John Gibson and drummer Danny Brawner were shaped in large part by the Ventures. Rechristened the Sandells, they signed to the World Pacific label in 1964, soon issuing their debut single "Out Front." Filmmaker Brown was already licensing World Pacific material for his projects, but had previously employed West Coast jazz recordings -- he felt the Sandells perfectly complemented his latest picture, the surfing documentary The Endless Summer, and the group ...

Vibrasonic - Vibrasonic [1995]
2008-12-14 20:26:00
Phil Dirt; UK psychedelic surf monsters Vibrasonic have issued a wonderful CD blending surf and psych in a most unusual way. The guitarist plays some pretty heady surf over some pretty cool psych beds in the Dukes Of Stratosphere vein. There is no more unique band in the surf family. Paul Galaxy & the Galactix - Cross The Line [2001]
2008-12-14 19:52:00
Phil Dirt; This is a genuine piece of Americana. Nine clean crisp rockabilly vocals full of energy and style along side 5 solid instros that straddle the surf-rockabilly fence. Some excellent musicianship and writing, well recorded and nicely packaged. Paul Galaxy and the Galactix are from Las Wages, where women are women, and the men play guitar under neon lights. V.A. Rare West Coast Surf Instrumentals [2001]
2008-11-30 20:36:00
All of the two dozen cuts on this anthology were issued between 1959 and 1964 on Titan, a small Los Angeles indie. Actually, a few of these -- particularly the pre-1962 cuts -- are not surf instrumentals so much as the pounding instrumental rock that was influential in the birth of surf music. But who's talking? Just one of these was a national hit, and a modest one at that -- the Strangers' aptly named "Caterpillar Crawl" made it just inside the Top 50 in 1959. As a whole, the compilation's OK but nothing more: period instrumental and early surf music. Interestingly though, a few fairly big names pop up here and there. Joel Hill of the Strangers eventually landed in Canned Heat and the Flying Burrito Brothers in the 1970s, and plays some pretty wicked blues-rock guitar on the 1959 single "Hill Stomp," one of the few cuts here that transcends the generic. Davie Allan of "Blues Theme" fame is heard on his 1964 single, "War Path"/"Beyond the Blue"; these are among the better tracks...

Hapa - Surf Madness [1997]
2008-11-23 13:17:00
An album of surf rock from the Hawaiian fusion duo Hapa. The album is largely new material done in the surf style, but there are covers here, too, on which Hapa always excels. The album opens with a short bit of theme music for the Axel and Barneldo characters taken on by Flanagan and Kaneali'i to set the mood, and moves into the classic "Walk Don't Run." A few new compositions by Flanagan in the surf rock genre follow, referencing every major act of the era along the way, even enlisting the help of Don Ho for a single line of lyrics. The guitars are always slightly fuzzed and always bright sounding, following the contour runs favored in the style. An odd piece in dedication to Flanagan's surf teacher comes along in the form of "Gregory Anthony's Tubular Symphony," making use of sitars and Brazilian friction drums in its course, but somehow bending it back into the surf aesthetic before the song is over. "Wipe Out" couldn't very well be missed among the covers, and another Flan...

Phantom Surfers - 18 Deadly Ones [1996, Vinyl]
2008-11-17 21:04:00
Surf music revivalists the Phantom Surfers formed in early 1988 around the lineup of guitarists Johnny Bartlett and Mel Bergman, bassist Mike Lucas, and drummer Danny Seelig. Originally founded at the 11th hour to fill a cancelled gig at the University of California Santa Cruz, the group quickly emerged as an underground favorite, famed for their mystery-kitsch image (Lone Ranger masks were de rigeur) and carefully choreographed stage act; the debut Phantom Surfers LP 18 Deadly Ones followed on Norton Records in 1991 amidst a flurry of 7"s, and in the years to follow, the band remained frighteningly prolific, issuing albums and singles on over a dozen different labels (including discs with guitar legends Dick Dale and Davie Allan). In time, Seelig left the group to join the Hi-Fives and was replaced by drummer Russell Quan; in the wake of The Great Surf Crash of '97, Bartlett also handed in his resignation, with Maz Kattuah assuming his guitar duties. 2000's XXX Party featured con...

Moon-Rays - Thrills & Chills [2002]
2008-11-09 12:06:00
Phil Dirt; It's not often that a release's own propaganda is either accurate or adequate enough to describe the sounds within a disc, but that's just what has happened here. So, instead of creating another way of saying the same thing, let me just quite from the rear tray card: "Surfing, monsters and spies... If they ever decide to remake any of the old Frankie and Annette beach movies, throw in The Creature From The Black lagoon and spy girl Stephanie Powers to fight him off you'd have the groundwork for a Moon -Rays soundtrack. Spy-Fi music, not a true genre, but close enough." They did leave out one thing - fun! This is a completely original merger of a number of styles that is simply great listening for a tweaky mood. Crossfires - Out Of Control [1995]
2008-11-02 13:53:00
Phil Dirt; The Crossfires are the legendary band that evolved into the Turtles. Rhino released most of this material earlier in the eighties on vinyl, but know its all on CD and sounding pretty good. The master tapes were held all these years by the late drummer Don Murray. Their vocal tunes were always bizarre, or at least funny ("One Potato," etc.), but it was their fiery surf instros with a most unusual dual sax onslaught that set them apart. They were on Lucky Token Records, the same label that issued the post Paul Johnson Bel-Aires single. The band was really hot, judging from these tracks. The ten instros here feature the lead guitar wizardry of Al Nichol, the sax menagerie of Howard Kaplan and Mark Volman (Flo & Eddie), Don Murray's drums, Chuck Portz' bass, and rhythm guitar work from Dale Walton and on later tracks Tom Stanton (Surf Kings). Avengers VI - Real Cool Hits [1964]
2008-10-26 14:02:00
No mere footnote in surf music history, the Avengers VI were an exceptional group of clean-cut rockers in matching suits from Anaheim, CA, whose somewhat forgotten classic, "Time Bomb" was covered in recent years by both Man or Astro-man? and the Bomboras. This reissue of their first recording, which came out in 1966, was originally intended to be promotion for the Good Humor Ice Cream Company. The cover features them on top of and around an ice cream truck sporting matching aqua-colored suits. Nearby, an ice cream man displays a Popsicle. But the album is also a very impressive and enjoyable collection of originals and covers including a knockout take on "Downtown," as well as Henry Mancini's "Mr. Lucky" and more obvious choices like "Pipeline" and "Peter Gunn." It's the originals, though, that make the case for the band being a forgotten gem amongst the legions of '60s surf groups. Featuring scintillating organ riffs and three guitars going berserk, songs like "None But the Bra...

Ararat Finks' additional hybrid of surf and cocktail jazz debuted in 1991 in their native Long Beach, California. The Fireballs moved on from the successes of "Torquay" and "Vaquero" for Top Rank and cut this gem of an album for Warwick in 1961. The leadoff single was "Rik-A-Tik," which they had already cut for Top Rank, followed by "Quite a Party," another Top 30 hit for the band. The resulting album was another collection of crisply played instrumentals, most with a Spanish theme, all expertly produced by Norman Petty. Another one to add to your Fireballs collection, and superior to many of their later Dot albums. Satan's Pilgrims - Around The World With [1997]
2008-10-05 13:13:00
The neo-surf sounds of Satan's Pilgrims are completely focused on the narrow genre the band has defined for themselves, and while this isn't a terrible thing, it does imply that most listeners won't particularly need to own more than one of the band's releases. Considering this, the concept of Around the World ... makes the album stand out as the best and most worthwhile of the band's releases; the tracks on the record are organized by location, including covers of John Barry's "Theme from Beat Girl" (Britain), Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Wave" (Brazil) and the Ventures' "Ginza Lights" (Japan). Around the World also touches on Cuba, France, and several American locations -- the band does an excellent job of actually adapting their signature surf sound to the musical traditions of each location, and this lends the record a level of variety that's largely absent from their other releases. [Allmusic.com]Phil Dirt; Great CD. The pilgrims have captured some mighty surfy stuff here. I...

For those who just wonder: what does Boppeslag mean?Boppeslag is officially written in the Frisian language as Boppeslach, but because our local TV has a program called Boppeslach I chose to write it down as you speak it.It is a sports term from our local sport called Keatsen [played 3 against 3 persons with a small leather bal [like a ping pong bal].When you hit the ball straight out of the field and score 2 points you made a Boppeslag, it?s like a homerun but you don?t hit the ball with a bat but just with your hand [with or without a glove]From Wikipedia;Frisian handball (Dutch: kaatsen, Frisian: Keatsen) is a traditional Frisian sport, related to American handball and fives, that is most commonly practiced by people from the northern province of Fryslân/Friesland. It is believed to be one of the oldest ballgames. The score is similar to tennis. The first team scoring six games, wins the match. The major Frisian handball tournament, called the P.C. Fathoms - Overboard [1998]
2008-09-20 16:31:00
Overboard is such faithful surf revivalism that there's little to distinguish it from many surf records waxed in 1962-1964, other than perhaps inevitable slight sonic differences resulting from more modern recording technology. This faithfulness is both an asset and a drawback; they certainly understand the essence of the surf originators, yet neither do they add particularly new ingredients. They do stand out in the relatively small 1990s surf revivalist scene, however, in their reliance upon original material by lead guitarist Frankie Blandino (with the exception of the cover of the Astronauts' Lee Hazlewood-penned "The Hearse"). Also, they're unusual in featuring raunchy sax (by Dave Scholl) as well as dripping-wet reverbed guitar; raunchy R&B-influenced saxes were actually pretty common in original surf music, but not so much so in latter-day surf bands. Blandino is an excellent and mighty fluent surf guitarist, and an able composer of the minor-keyed, Latin-influenced me...

Phil Dirt; There is some crossover here from the Ocean Reef disc, but with more tracks and different takes, and a better cross section of sounds. A lot of this material can be likened to Man or Astro-MAN? in that it's hard driving, guitar driven, and riff oriented as opposed to melodic. Vocals here include Johnny Kidd and the Pirates' "Please Don't Touch," "Uranus is a Planet," the Ramones' "Rockaway Beach," and a live take of the Trashmen's "SurfinŐ Bird." 2008-09-14 08:48:00
Although the Mermen are trying to stave off being pigeonholed into any one musical genre -- like almost every band in the world looking to have a lengthy career, that is -- the San Francisco-based instrumental trio's first album is probably as close to traditional surf music as they get. Filled with not much more than Jim Thomas' burgeoning guitar skills and Allan Whitman's and Martyn Jones' relatively static backing rhythms, Krill Slippin' isn't packed with as many experimental eye-openers as the brilliant A Glorious Lethal Euphoria, Songs of the Cows, or the wildly diverse Amazing California Health and Happiness Road Show. Phil Dirt; Jetpack's debut disc is a major undertaking, sporting the meander of the Reventlos, but seeming to be much more deliberate and artsy. The music is well crafted, almost scientifically calculated. Each piece is a capsule unto itself. The CD doesn't really have a "band sound." The most creative piece here is the great surf reworking of Simon and Garfunkle's "Sound Of Silence."Jetpack is one guy who was hooked him up with Michael Kramer (Producer of both Blue Hawaiians records). It's much more of a collection of artwork from expressive players that brought to this canvas a wide pallet of influences. The concept of the disc is a surf opera, telling a story through the use of different instro genres, but remaining rooted in surf. Dan Jetpack has also assembled a band to support the record, and to expand their sound [Reverb Central]Jetpack is the surf instrumental brainchild of guitarist Daniel J. This disc is steeped in the twangy sound of fender guitars and vibrato effects...
