Album Review: Rocko - Self Made
2008-03-21 19:03:00
A common misconception divides many of today’s Hip Hop fans. On one side of the aisle, there are those who believe that an artist has to be positive in order to be dope; the other side believing that big words and catchy metaphors about the lifestyles of the rich and famous make for a dope MC. The answer lies somewhere in the middle. All “positive” or “conscious” MCs are dope and all the dope boys aren’t whack. There are plenty of MCs on both sides of the spectrum that are great and others that are great and being terrible. Unfortunately for Island Def Jam, there newest find, Rocko , falls in the latter category. To say that his major label debut, Self Made is an abomination is an insult to the word “abomination”. Backed by the radio friendly “Umma Do Me,” Rocko proceeds to tell the world what separates him from a number of unnamed persons. Granted, “You make it sprinkle/I make it tsunami/You get chump change/But I get money” aren’t going to fly in the ciphe...

Jay-Z Wants ''Way Too Much'' For Carter Music Label
2008-03-20 23:24:00
Now that he's no longer with Def Jam, Jay-Z has been shopping his own Carter Music Group around for a home. But inside reports say that he is asking for more than his upstart label is worth. According to the New York Post, the music mogul is asking "way too much" for the imprint, an insider told Page 6. "He wants a label to give him $100 million for the Carter Music Group and provide for overhead, development and digital investment. It's crazy. He wants the labels to basically be his venture capital fund - but unlike a venture cap, they won't get 50 percent. This is not the '90s anymore." As SOHH previously reported, Jay-Z stepped down from his post at Def Jam over a money dispute in December of last year when he and Island Def Jam chief L.A. Reid couldn't come to a salary agreement. When news of Jay starting his own label first hit, it was said that it would be under Warner Music Group. According to Def Jam, the company was never interested in housing the Ca...

T.I. Free, Judge Grants Release For Easter
2008-03-20 23:22:00
T.I. was unable to host Thanksgiving at his home in Atlanta, but he will be allowed to leave the premises to celebrate Easter . As SOHH previously reported, T.I. withdrew a court request in November to host Thanksgiving at his home after it was met with strong opposition from prosecutors. The rapper, born Clifford Harris, is on house arrest awaiting trial for a federal weapons case. On Thursday (March 20th) a federal judge ruled that T.I. is allowed to be away from home 8:30 AM to 2 PM on Sunday in order to attend a service sponsored by New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. According to the Associated Pres, T.I. must be accompanied during his church visit by one of his attorneys as well as a court-appointed monitor. The church service was originally scheduled to be held in the Georgia Dome in downtown Atlanta, however due to tornado damage at the dome it may now be held at the church's location in Lithonia. T.I. was arrested in October 2007 in an ...

Eminem "Scared" To Record With Lil Wayne?
2008-03-19 20:42:00
In a recent interview with DJ Semtex, Lil Wayne was asked who he would like to work with but has yet to. After Weezy responded with unrealistic collaborations with the likes of Elvis and Sammy Davis Jr, he went on to discuss a more feasible collaboration that has yet to happen. ?I?ve never done a song with Eminem ,? Wayne says. ?I sent him a song and he ain?t do it. I didn?t like that but it?s all good. People be busy and stuff or a.k.a. just scared to get on a song with me.? Wayne also discusses Kanye West?s contributions to The Carter III. It has been widely known that Kanye and Weezy were working together on the album but many are curious as to what extent West is featured. ?The first time, Kanye came and brought me 5 joints. The next time he came and gave me a CD with 15 joints on it. I had to tell him, hold on, please stop,? Weezy jokes. ?On the album Kanye has a good three (songs) but in the files he has about twenty.?Semtex then asks Wayne about his partying lifestyle and add...

Busta Rhymes Given Probation In Assault Case
2008-03-19 20:25:00
Busta Rhymes was sentenced to three years' probation, 10 days of community service and a $1,250 fine for a series of 2007 arrests for assault and driving while intoxicated. If convicted, Busta Rhymes, whose real name is Trevor Smith, could have faced up to one year of jail time for each offense. The 35-year-old rapper and actor was initially arrested in May of 2007 for failing a Breathalyzer test after police stopped him because the tint on the windows of his vehicle was too dark. Another arrest came in August for assaulting a man that spit on his car, and it was followed by a December arrest for kicking and striking his former driver during a dispute. According to the Associated Press, Judge Larry Stephen of Manhattan Criminal Court was lenient with his sentencing, but also issued a warning. "If you mess up, you're going to jail," Stephen said. "I've given you a chance." Busta said he would have no trouble following the terms of his probation, which also include enrollment in a...

Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 3/16/08
2008-03-19 20:19:00
Hip Hop returned to the charts this week, in a major way. In the trifecta of releases from Fat Joe, Snoop Dogg and Rick Ross, it was the youngest, and southern representative that took the coveted #1 spot. Just under the two-hundred thousand mark, Ross' Trilla is the best first week selling rap album of 2008. Not far behind, Snoop Dogg also fared well in an impressive first week - can Ego Trippin' crack the platinum status in the US that The Blue Carpet Treatment fell just a tad short of? Of the three, the independent delegate, Fat Joe cracked the Top Ten with a #6 position, selling just under 50,000 units. Will 50 Cent's recent prophecy to XXL hold true that Joe Crack will fail to reach 100,000 on Elephant in the Room be true? Surprisingly, it was Mary J Blige and Alicia Keys who gave up Top Ten seats to Janet Jackson and Erykah Badu. As commercial urban radio isn't playing Badu's single "Honey," will the adult contemporary market sustain the eclectic R&B veteran? To...

Flo Rida Mail On Sunday Album Review
2008-03-19 03:40:00
Flo Rida first arrived on the scene last summer on the DJ Khaled track "Bitch I'm From Dade County." To be honest about it I ignored his vocal performance entirely. When you're sharing a Diaz Brothers with the likes of Rick Ross, Trick Daddy and Trina it's not like you're getting the top spot on the cut. Then again Brisco was on this track too and has blown up since then with "In the Hood" so perhaps it's worthwhile to give Flo Rida another chance. After all he's already dropped two hot singles off "Mail On Sunday " before the album even hit stores - the first of which is "Low" featuring T-Pain. "I ain't never seen nothin that'll make me gothis crazy all night spendin my doughHad a million dollar vibe and a bottle to goThem birthday cakes, they stole the showSo sexual, she was flex-ablePro-fessional, drinkin X and ohHoooold up, wait a minute, do I seewhat I think I - WHOADid I thank I see shawty get LOWAin't the same when it's up that CLOSEMake it rain, I'm makin it ...

Game Joins Fat Joe/50 Cent/Papoose Beef Triangle
2008-03-19 02:12:00
If you?ve heard the new street single ?Big Dreams? from The Game already [click to listen], it?s apparent that his distaste for 50 Cent is still evident. This was reiterated the past weekend when Fat Joe stopped by Baltimore?s 92Q Jam?s radio station to promote his new album, Elephant In The Room. An inordinate amount of people called in, including a few hip-hop artists, but none of the phone calls was more striking than Game?s. He repeated a line from ?Big Dreams? and stated, ?I?m Curtis kryptonite,? sending Fat Joe into an ecstatic frenzy. Game then went on to say ?Ayo Crack, I got your back. Soon as I got home I see you sitting on the couch on 106 & Park talking crazy. I?m like yo Joe is my man, I?m going in with my man.? As we have seen before, Game and 50 Cent have been butting heads since the G-Unit split, but if there was any time for Game to gain an upper hand, it would be now. Whether or not this means a collaboration between Fat Joe and The Game for his upcoming L.A.X....

Sheek Louch Says J-Hood Can't Come Back
2008-03-19 00:51:00
Sheek Louch's third solo release, Silverback Gorilla, hit shelves today (Mar.18). SOHH caught up with the D-Block front man and chatted him up about his new project, beef with Mobb Deep and his real feelings about J-Hood . "It ain't nothing," Sheek said of rap group Mobb Deep. "They good dudes. I like Havoc. Prodigy dissed Sheek in his blog, listing rappers he respected and then calling Sheek "one of the worst ever." "I know about all the comments Prodigy made about all the rappers, I still like him." Former D-Block member J-Hood on the other hand..."He's a little clown acting like a little young boy would, just real unappreciative," Sheek told SOHH. The rapper said he thinks J-Hood set his sights on beef with him because he needed someone to blame for his career not really taking off. "Somebody gotta be the bad guy," Sheek said. "I took his money, I came in the studio and slapped him, I did this and that ... None of it's true." And though Sheek...

LA Times Writer Responds To Diddy, Henchmen's Denials Of '94 Tupac Shooting
2008-03-18 23:17:00
Despite both Diddy and Jimmy "Henchmen" Rosemond denying accusations from a recent LATimes .com article that fingered them as knowing or being involved in the 1994 shooting of Tupac Shakur, the paper's writer Chuck Philips is sticking to his guns, standing by his piece.According to what the writer told BET.com, both men knew of the story prior to being published, and was given the chance to comment, but refused."Puffy chose not to talk," Philips said. "I offered him the opportunity to comment twice. He knew what the story was going to say. He decided not to comment."And although Diddy called the story "beyond ridiculous," he was not accused of being behind the attack of Shakur, only that he knew it was going down before it happened. As far as Rosemond, he was said to have helped set the whole thing up, according to the article printed on Monday (March 17), and he, just like Diddy, declined to comment, and instead threatened legal action if Philips went forward with the story."He refu...

Diddy Denies Involvement In Tupac Assault
2008-03-17 23:48:00
With accusations that Diddy and the late Notorious B.I.G. had knowledge of the now infamous attack on Tupac at Quad Recording Studios surfacing in an LA Times story [click here to read], Diddy has issued a statement regarding the matter."This story is beyond ridiculous and is completely false," Diddy says. "Neither Biggie nor I had any knowledge of any attack before, during, or after it happened. It is a complete lie to suggest that there was any involvement by Biggie or myself. I am shocked that the Los Angeles Times would be so irresponsible as to publish such a baseless and completely untrue story." It is also been reported by other sources that CEO of Czar Entertainment, Jimmy "Henchmen" Rosemond, has also gone on record to say that the accusations are ill placed and completely false. L.A. Times Reporter Implicates Diddy, Rosemond in Tupac Attack
2008-03-17 23:47:00
Roughly 14 years ago, Tupac Shakur accused Sean "Diddy " Combs and Christopher "The Notorious B.I.G." Wallace of orchestrating a near fatal attack on him outside of New York's Quad Recording Studio. In today's edition of the LA Times , Pulitzer Prize winning reporter Chuck Phillips uses FBI testimony and anonymous firsthand accounts, to allege that Shakur was correct. Aside from Combs, Czar Entertainment founder Jimmy Rosemond is the most notable figure named in the article. Phillips cites FBI records from 2002, which quote a "confidential informant" as telling authorities that Rosemond and James Sabatino were involved in the attack. Neither Combs, Wallace or Rosemond have ever been accused of any crimes relating to the 1994 assault or the death of Tupac Shakur. Sabatino is currently in prison for unrelated offenses. Phillips also covered the 2002 wrongful-death suit involving Wallace's estate and the LAPD. Phillips' allegations come on the heels of recent legal issues for both Co...
