Artist Spotlight: Peter Thomas Sound Orchestra: Futuremuzik
2008-04-02 06:40:00
Peter Thomas is a regularly featured artist on The Deuce Project. The reason? His music is simply amazing. Thomas is probably best known for his work in soundtracks for various film and television projects. Most notably, at least for this show, is his work on the German program entitled Raumpatrouille (Space Patrol). According to some sources, this is the first recorded musical use of a vocoder.Thomas did quite a bit of recording with his Sound Orchestra. The orchestra itself was a bit of a revolving door group, featuring various jazz and session musicians found around Germany @ the time. The liner notes on this album actually make it worthy of purchase on their own. Here are a few of my favorite bits:Ingfried Hoffman on Thomas's relation with the musicians: "he came with a beer coaster into the studio on which he had written a few basic ideas. The rest was up to us. Only later did we realize the large degree of freedom he gave us made his music possible. On Thomas's technical innova...

Artist Spotlight: Dr. Samuel Hoffman/Les Baxter/Harry Revel/Billy May

Waves In The Ether: The Magical World Of The ThereminBy: Harry Revel, Dr. Samuel Hoffman , Les Baxter, & Billy MayWe've decided to share a couple of our favorite recordings that you fleshbags may not be familiar with. This particular "album" is actually a trilogy of recordings bringing together the great Les Baxter, Dr. Samuel Hoffman, and Harry Revel* (so you know it is bound to be dope.)All three LPs are composed by Revel and feature the theremin work of the good doctor Hoffman. The first two (Music Out of the Moon and Perfume Set to Music) feature the famous Les Baxter as the conductor, while the third (Music for Peace of Mind) features Billy May as the conductor. One interesting historical/trivia note is that Perfume Set to Music was actually sponsored by the Corday perfume company due in part to the success of Music Out of the Moon. The idea was that each piece would in some way represent different fragrances in the Corday line.I highly suggest buying this album if you are i...

Free Games We Play on Deuce Project Station
2008-03-31 02:37:00
A number of our listeners also enjoy recreational computer games. We encourage this habit. Here are some of Drexzor's recent favorites:Synaesthete: A rhythm-game based shooter with beautiful graphics and quite innovative gameplay. The view is 3/4 and you maneuver your character around various rooms while shooting monsters. The catch? To shoot them you have to match the beats that go along with the game's (very nice) soundtrack. Somewhere Berzerk hooked up with Beatmania and this game was conceived. This game was developed by a group of Digipen students:N: Way of The Ninja : An update of this game was recently released for purchase on X-box Live Arcade under the name N+. N+ includes online multi-player which is fiendishly fun. However, this link will give you a free version of the original packed with a ton of user created levels. The level editor on this game is simply stellar. The gameplay itself is 2-dNot free...but fun:Audio-Surf : A mixture of a puzzler/shooter/music game. The...

Yesterday's aired program of The Deuce Project will not be entered into the podcast archives. There were some major technical difficulties at the start of the show that made the sound quality abysmal. We were going to post some mp3s of the Old Time Radio (OTR) show Dimension X in order to make up for the lack of a podcast this week. As luck would have it, when looking for original broadcast information regarding the episode we came across this internet gem:http://www.archive.org/details/OTRR_C ertified_Dimension_XThis archive has the best quality recordings we've heard for the show. It is missing a few episodes that we have and will contribute later, but for now this is an absolute great find for OTR fans. Dimension X is one of the premier science fiction radio dramas of the past. It featured fantastic episodes sometimes adapted from authors such as Ray Bradbury and other great authors. The winners of the Deuce Project Box Set need not bother downloading these as I will be including...

Modern Theremin Compositions: touch! don't touch!
2008-01-30 03:31:00
I recently received the above album in the mail. The music is not what I was expecting. Initially, I was expecting something similar to the stylings of master theremin player Clara Rockwell;classical pieces either featuring the theremin as a solo instrument, or incorporating it in some interesting way. Instead, the compositions take a more contemporary form, focusing on more nuanced and quiet compositions than featuring melodic solos as I originally imagined. The result is quite interesting, and overall rather good in my opinion. This is not pop music, this is not theremin exploitation, this is an exploration of at least one facet of the instrument that is sometimes overlooked. The composers and performers are attempting to bring about Leo Theremin's initial hopes of the theremin being seen as a serious instrument, by trying to find a place for it outside of wacky sound-effects, and to fit it organically inside these compositions. If you enjoy the album, I suggest you purchase it. I...

Artist Spotlight: Oh Astro - Champions Of Wonder
2008-01-28 19:46:00
This is one of the most exciting albums we have heard up here in Deuce Project Station for quite some time. Oh Astro is comprised of the husband and wife duo Jane Dowe and Hank Hofler. The album "Champ ioins of Wonder" is entirely made of samples and vocals that are manipulated via spectral software coded by Dowe and Christopher Penrose. The result? An incredibly catchy album. A fun game is to listen to the tracks and then try to guess what artists pieces are being utilized. The answers in a lot of cases are surprising.Mp3 with sample of the vocal manipulation: Robot Love I Love You Oh Astro's MyspaceOh Astro's Webpage

http://cinematictitanic.com/wpmu/Cinemati c Titanic is the new Joel Hodgson (of MST3K fame) project. The above is the trailer for the newly available DVD. R-Vector 9 first posted about this about a month or so ago, and I thought some of our readers might be interested to see the progress. We are awaiting the delivery to Deuce Project Station of this new project. Apparently they are having problems figuring out how to ship to interstellar locations, but I have been assured that it should be shipping in 5 business days. Walking In Space With Mort Garson
2008-01-12 23:07:00
Walking in Space With Mort - The Deuce Project (1-13-08)Mort Garson recently passed away. Mort was 83 years old. I only recently started listening to Garson's work. My first exposure to his unique style was his Electronic Hair Pieces album, which I originally ran across on the excellent blog Egg City Radio. Mort's work is rather impressive, especially given the time period he is working within. As Mr. Fab points out on Music for Maniacs, Electronic Hair Pieces is one of the few moog-sploitation albums Garson did. However, even when listening to that album it is worth noting some of the complexity of the arrangments he showcases, rather than a simple melody-match that is found on other Moog albums of the time.I first read about Garson's passing on Music for Maniacs, and immediately thought it would be proper to do a tribute to this early electronic music pioneer. Oddly enough, the song Space Walker, performed by The Time Zone and I believe composed by Garson, was already slated to...

Captured by Robots!
2007-12-21 05:06:00
Once upon a time, Jbot played for influential 3rd wave ska bands such as The Blue Meanies and Skankin Pickle. Nowadays, he has been captured by robotic rock musicians who love to torture him on-stage for the amusement of audiences across the galaxy.Captured! by Robots is a one man band of a different sort. The one human in the group built an entire band that plays everything from horns (The Headless Hornmen), to guitar and drums. The music has a pretty straight-forward punk/metal sound to it (for the most part) and is pretty enjoyable. The sheer ingenuity of the project is worth a look. Fabztravaganza! (Podcast finally posted!)
2007-12-14 16:08:00
We at Deuce Project Station apologize for the lack of podcasts. Things up here have been crazy. There was the space plague that we finally overcame and then we were hit with our quarterly reports involving the quantum fluctuations in our designated area of space-time. Drexzor 9s parapersonality programing went haywire and he was convinced he was a flapper from your planet's history and it took us 4 days to find the corrupted line of coding and get him back to work. Well, all of that is over now and this weekend will bring with it a double-dose of podcast goodness. The first offering is the fabled Fabztravaganza! episode that aired two weeks ago. Mr. Fab from the oft-mentioned site Music for Maniacs was kind enough to provide the Deuce Project with a 30 minute sci-fi mix. The mix itself is included at the conclusion of the show. However, there are fun treats from RIAA and Mr. Fab littered throughout. So without further ado...enter the Fabztravaganza!http://www.megaupload.com/ ?d=G8QQB...

New(ish) Video By Enon
2007-11-30 22:27:00
Longtime fans of The Deuce Project (you know, all one of you) probably know the love we have for Enon . The new album Grass Geysers is really rather good. It has a more stripped down feel and is a little bit more straight up rock (and apparently they have fallen in love with the fuzz bass). It is interesting to compare this release to the recent reissue of their first album Believio! Both are fantastic releases, though I have to say the first album will always hold a special place in the emotional processors of this space station. (It may be unfair to compare the two given that the line-up shifted, but these type of comparissons are expected when a band keeps the same moniker despite a considerable shake-up in its active participants)Regardless, Drekzor 9 was browsing your internet's "You Tube" data base today and came across the following video featuring the song Dr. Freeze, from the new album. Enjoy!
