Visions of the Retrofuture
2008-08-20 21:38:00 1947 by AurabombDrexzor was on web-surveillance duty last night and came across an interesting image-pool on Flickr. "Wasn't The Future a Wonderful Place" hosts some images of humanity's visions of the future as seen from the lens of the 1950s-60s. The photographs, sketches, etc... aren't typically from that era, but invoke the aesthetic that was all the rage at the time. The above is one of Deuce Project Station's favorites included in the collection. More About: Visions

No podcast for 8-9-08
2008-08-09 23:55:00 There will unfortunately not be a new podcast for the broadcast date of 8-9-08. Due to some glitches in the ship's educational software, no new show was produced for the aforementioned date. We will be back next week. However, there is good news for those of you that use i-tunes and haven't downloaded all of the past shows from this blog. Recently the fine folks at WIDR fm uploaded a bunch of old podcasts, artwork included, onto the itunes subscription feed for this show. If you are interested, click on the "subscribe via i-tunes" link located to the right of this post. There are currently around 19 past shows available for download in full 320 kbps mp3 glory. A couple of good blogs
2008-08-04 04:08:00 Drexzor is in charge of research for the Deuce Project, and as such he surfs music blogs a LOT looking for songs that would fit the show. This has led to the Deuce Project coffers emptying quickly as anything of note that is found, we typically try to purchase rather than simply download (when such items are in-print). Two blogs that have had great stuff lately and have set back our takeover of your planet due to the toll they have taken on Deuce Project Station's budget are:Stigma Rest RoomandDr. Forrest's Cheeze FactoryFun stuff at both. While NASA wasn't operational until that October, President Eisenhower's signing of Public Law 85-568 ushered in the agency we have to thank for man's first steps on the moon, recent discoveries such as water in the soil of Mars, and hopefully much more in the future. Show on Saturday
2008-06-18 17:31:00 Greetings Deuce Project listeners, First off, there is a show in Kalamazoo on 6.21.08 that may be of interest to you. The bands Aleph-1 and Land of Atlantis are going to be playing at Papa Pete's (502 S. Burdick Street) at 9pm. It is an 18+ show and the door price is $10 for the under-21 crowd and $5 if you are 21+. Obviously, Aleph-1 is the band that caught our eye at first, but both seem great. They also both have songs you can listen to on their myspace pages...imagine that. It isn't everyday that you get to rock out to the sounds of the infinity of the continuum.Aleph-1http://www.myspace.com/a leph1bandLand of Atlantis here( http://www.myspace.com/landofatlantis ).Here's the bio blurbs:ALEPH-1"...it?s the electro-jazz / power prog rock trio Aleph-1 from Ann Arbor, with their sleek sci-fi inflected synths and rapid rhythms... HULC Exoskeleton News or Better Living Through Technological Enhancements
2008-06-01 19:17:00 On May 20 we posted a story contributed by Deuce Project friend Amytronic about a robotic exoskeleton that allowed users to lift loads of around 500 lbs. (Here)Well, apparently robotic exo-skeletons are the new thing. Berkeley Bionics has started to accept orders for its HULC (Human Universal Load Carrier) . The HULC is a mobile exoskeleton that allows users to manuever effectively with loads up to 200 lbs.. Another interesting bit from this New Scientist article:More impressively, the 'proprietary technology' within HULC actually reduces metabolic cost. Wearing the HULC, you consume about 5-10% less oxygen when walking than a HULC-less friend. The effect is even more pronounced when carrying a heavy load. The link above also includes video of the device in action. So human enhancements are coming along. Between exoskeletons and body temperature regulating gloves such as the Core Control, human beings seem to be developing a new means of non-organic environmental adapatation. Intere... Auditory Library Entry: Man in Space With Sounds
2008-05-08 17:32:00 In the Earth-year of 1962 C.E. Seattle hosted a World's Fair. Attendees at that fair were given the opportunity to ride in the futuristic bubbleator for a 21-minute tour of the future...or at least that is what the exhibit promised. The bubbleator itself was a spherical plastic elevator that could hold 150 passengers.(pictured below)While on the bubbleator passengers saw visual images meant to display the progress of man. Starting with the Acropolis, passengers saw images ranging from bomb shelters to bombshells (Marilyn Monroe...with an A-bomb cloud behind her), and beyond. All the while, their ears were met with the music of Attilio "Art" Mineo and a cheery disembodied voice introducing the various sights. Of course, the passengers also had a guide wearing a shiny silver helmet telling them more information, but it seems that the wonder of the music can be felt without such prattling on.The recording is great. The strings sound traditional at first and then suddenly you are conf... More About: Space , Sounds , Library , Entry

Arist Spotlight: Spoozys
2008-04-22 08:42:00 Spoozys - Existence of Super EarthFirst of all, we would like to apologize for being behind on the podcasts. Our captain must maintain his earthling cover while infiltrating and hence has been submerged in your Earth college tradition of writing term papers. In the meantime, we have decided to explore further the touch of the Plastics on the Tokyo Neo-New Wave scene, and we just happened to have received a recent delivery with The Spoozys debut album, the 1998 Existence of Super Earth. Unfortunately, we do not have the antiquated technology necessary to make a two-dimensional "scan" of the cover image and all Drexzor turned up in his searches on the web were tiny images. Hence, you get the above image of the Spoozys in full-gear (they often started their shows in these outfits and, typically, lost the helmets after a bit.)Having only been familiar with Astral Astronauts and the Astro '99 EP, we were surprised to hear the sounds on this disc. The Plastics influence is obvious at firs... More About: Spotlight
Utilizing Image Processing to Digitize Mechanically Recorded Sound
2008-04-18 17:29:00 Update: I just realized that I didn't credit whatever blog I originally read about this on. Unfortunately, I just dumped my short-term memory cache and did not make a backup of that data. Perhaps it was a news story posted on http://no-datta.blogspot.com/ [I am told by Drexzor that this inference is almost certainly correct]This is an interesting article regarding a recent contract between the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the library of congress to digitize mechanically recorded sound (cylinder recordings etc...) utilizing image processing methods that are also being implemented for the human discovery of the Higgs-Boson Particle. (Honesty, you humans still utilize "particles" in your physics? Wow. You should be glad that with our invasion we will also share some of our scientific knowledge with you organ-sacks.)http://www.primidi.com/2004/ 04/19.html#a812 More About: Sound , Image , Digitize
The Echo of Plastics
2008-04-17 06:41:00 It is no secret that up here on Deuce Project Station we love Polysics. One day Drexzor was doing a bit of research and noted that the Polysics song "Good" on 1st P is a cover of a track by a band called Plastics . Well, we had heard of Plastics before and actually had some of their music in our archives in .ogg form. Well, we gave Drexzor the job of converting the music to 320 kps mp3s for our listeners to enjoy. Thus this post. This is a great record. Most (if not all) of these tracks appeared on various singles and albums prior to appearing on Welcome Back. However, all of these tracks were re-recorded for this release. (Here is a discography with a lot of informative notes about the band)There is a lot to love about this recording. You can hear a bit of Talking Heads/Devo/B-52s in here. The jangly guitar riffs sometimes sound a lot like B-52s, but not at all derivative. 'Cards' reminds me a lot of the Talking Heads or maybe even Gang of Four with that mixture ofdance-floor rhyth... 2008-04-11 19:06:00 We have decided that future podcasts will be made available in two formats. We will continue offering a continuous mix of the show, as it appears on-air at WIDR. We will also be offering the broadcast divided into two parts that are quicker to download, and more cd-burnable since we have had requests for more easy-to-transfer versions of the show. Unfortunately Drexzor screwed up and cut this episode into two unequal parts...hence, the two-part download will appear later.
