Talking Heads, Heatwave, talk
2007-08-17 01:27:00
The Talk ing Heads debuted their "Remain In Light" (iTunes) material at the Heatwave Festival in Canada, 1980. As Animal Collective starts to add an Afropop feel to their new songs, it's interesting to go back and see perhaps the most famous incorporation of African sounds into modern American music. Let's read the words of someone who was there, guitar and multi-instrument virtuoso Adrian Belew (wiki), who recounts in his blog how he joined the Talking Heads for this legendary performance in a post titled "How Not To Join A Famous Band":"in 1980 I received a call asking me to come to new york city to rehearse for four days in order to learn the Talking Heads record remain in light. only months before I had recorded the record all in one day with the heads and brian eno. talking heads had the idea to expand their normal quartet to a thumping funky 10-piece band with two bass players, two keyboard players, two guitar players, two female back-up singers, one drummer and one percussio...

''Everything's fucked! It's down to individual people to make life enjoyable. I don't have anything more to say than that. I think people should avoid the world fucking them up. People are becoming too uptight, treating their children bad, being negative.''''I have a big legacy of The Clash to live up to and I don't intend to uriny on a legend. I intend to build forward into the next century. The music has to be by the musicians, and there's too much changing things by the record company. I got a message for everyone in a record company: We don't care if you lose your job! You ruin music and I'll get all the smoothers out off the way, the people who smooth the sound off. Let the musicians have the music the way they want it, and not the way you think the grandmothers and 3-year olds will gonna buy it. 'Cause this is not about 3-year olds or grandmothers... Joggers show released - Dime contest - help Portland youth w/ classic rock!
2007-07-09 10:33:00
The Joggers show I posted about earlier is out now (new songs). A few things had to be fixed before release, Yltfan and Thir13en don't fuck around with their sound! It is currently only available on DimeADozen, which is the premier bittorrent tracker site for live music. It is not easy to get an account there - akin to throwing hoops on bottles at the carnival: if you stand there and keep trying for a day or two eventually you'll get it. Bittorrent itself though is easy once you get the hang of it, hopefully music-lovers reading this already have it set-up (if not, look here). Basically this contest is for Joggers fans who already have BitTorrent set-up (or want to learn) but not an account at DimeADozen. I did the waiting for you and have one Dime account to give away - to the first person who emails me with the missing Joggers lyric:"Peace is a bore, so little kings start little wars" edit: contest over, but keep trying at Dime. However, the Joggers show is now also available on...

Battles are on a lot of lips these days. After an LP which served to compile their EPs, this one, "Mirrored", is their first proper album. Math rock, utilizes technology, ex-Don Caballero (guitarist Ian Williams) , yada yada. It's intricacies are, like the others in this post, best enjoyed when the album is played as a whole. I don't want words to get in the way of your enjoyment of one of the best new things around:Battles "Rainbow"Buy it at their label Warp Records, for several dollars cheaper than anywhere else (ten bucks) and with an exclusive poster, or at iTunes, or on mp3 or flac at Bleep (with exclusive art for each track).Battles drummer John Stanier (ex-Helmet) also pounds the skins for Tomahawk, which also features Mike Patton (Faith No More/Mr. Bungle/Fantomas) on vocals/keyboards/samples and Duane Denison (Jesus Lizard/Hank Williams III) playing guitar. It was Denison becoming disenchanted with Native American music he heard on reservations that led to his research fo...

This series of 60's reissues is similar to Nuggets: they sound like what you'd think the sixties really sounded like. It is the backing music to small-budget films of the period. Instead of the stale amalgamation of what the 60's sounded like as provided by your local oldies station, this sounds like what would be blaring out of the speakers at a real impromptu 60's drug/sex/dance bash (which are always the best kinds of bashes. Melt-Banana's newest
2007-06-12 08:06:00
The Japanese noise thrash break avant pop deconstructionist maestros are out with a new album, their sixth proper in a fifteen-year career, called "Bambi's Dilemma". I'm not sure if there are any love songs as I can't make out virtually any of the lyrics, as usual. It doesn't matter what the words are, because while there may be no blatant emotion, it still gives you that purging feeling which is always uplifting - that you along with the band and letting go and screaming and twisting with voice and instruments and just going "fuuuuuuuuck it! ahhhhhhghhHHH!", but in a cool Japanese artsy way, with an understanding of what music has been played before in the history of sound, and saying, "well, yeah, but it's never been played this fast in this way and then tweaked like this, ayieeeee!". Melt-Banana seemed to reach a pinnacle with their last album, 2003's "Cell-Scape", full of spectacular riffs to excite the senses, and here they seem determined to turn it up another notch, sho...
Animal Collective in Austin +TM
2007-06-05 20:48:00
Animal Collective was a trio on this tour... Geologist's head lamp circled to the beat in the darkness and he twiddled on knobs... Avey Tare shouting staccato yelps into the microphone in one hand, pounding a cymbal with a drumstick in the other... Panda Bear singing angelic madcap choruses over the undulating beats and waves of voice and sound and layers of delay. It's difficult for me to find the words to describe them because they are trying to come up with their own musical language, and because I've lost all objectivity in my awe. They seem to not so much write songs as pull them out of a magical bag full of primal psychedelic inspiration, and lately they are truly inspired. Their forthcoming album "Strawberry Jam" isn't due until September. There was one track in particular, the last of the new ones (13), where afterwards I looked at the soundguy and he smiled and I asked "What was the name of that song?" and he said "These are brand new, they just wrote them a couple of ...

Brand New Joggers Songs!
2007-06-02 01:28:00
Portland is home to both one of my favorite bands and one of the finest concert-tapers on the scene. And on April 14 at the Doug Fir in Portland they got together - The Joggers played a set including a total of FIVE brand new songs, sure to be on the anticipated third album sometime this year (hopefully), and Yltfan was there to tape the show like he usually does, with a matrix that captures the pristine sound of the soundboard, but neutralizing the sterility by blending it with a nice reverby natural room sound from audience microphones. He usually gets together with a guy I believe in Europe, Germany I think, who goes by the handle of Thir13en, and this guy often does the pro audio work. I say Germany because it seems a lot of Thirt13en's own shows come from there, fantastic old gems from bands like Pavement, recorded often probably better than many live albums. And again, for the dozenth but not last time, if you are a music nerd, you really need to be using BitTorrent, and you ...

Nips '79 - pre Pogues Macgown's first live rec.
2007-03-18 00:23:00
If you're any kind of Irishman, you're already too drunk to read this, I rarely drink much but cracked it open before noon today, tried to remaster this show then after a few hours said fuck it, it's already pretty good quality for an old boot, plus it took me long enough to edit and arrange these pics, thank the good lord for spellcheck to dress this post up, this is a rare baby, the first known live recording of Shane Mac gowan. I remember first seeing him, in the Pogues "White City" video, and I remember thinking, alright, don't get like that. Must brush teeth. And if you're any kind of Irishman (I'm a quarter, for real) or music fan for that matter, you've already burned through your Pogues collection on many a Saint Paddy's Day, and if you haven't, you really haven't celebrated St Paddy's Day. The Nips are more punkish London than drunken Ireland, but oddly enough still goes well with a good buzz. Here's a couple of sample tracks, the rest is the complete show:The Ni...

A Tribute In Stereo
2007-03-11 12:21:00
The E6 Townhall proudly presents a tribute to Robert Schneider and the Apples In Stere o..."A Tribu te In Stereo"First, big thanks must be extended once again to Benjamin, AKA Grimey. A tribute was attempted previously on the Apples Townhall and failed and he simply had gotten excited about it and didn't want to see the idea die (that's all it takes to make good things happen, folks). And for good reason... apart from providing some of the sunniest music around today, Robert Schneider and all the Apples In Stereo are genuinely nice people. Schneider is hilarious, too, he gets so excited when he's on the radio that he talks like he's about to die from Red Bull OD. But in an era full of posturing, attitude, and unoriginality, his over-the-top enthusuasm for music deserves to be applauded. (clap, clap, clap, clap). Don't miss them on tour right now!And the music on this tribute album is really, really, good, i was very surprised, much of it even somewhat pro-sounding, but to pay hom...

The Huge Housemartins Post
2007-03-05 06:32:00
Where to begin... I discovered the House martins like I did many bands in the 80's: through MTV's 120 minutes, once THE indie/alt music bible... one of my favorite fantasies was that I was one of those cool English kids like in the Smiths videos, savvy and brash yet clean and bookish. The Housemartins were similar, but more danceable. To say I adore them would be an understatement. Most people today sadly don't even know of them, although they definitely know the bassist (if you don't know I'll save it for below.) I think one of me and my best friend's strongest bonds is being both Housemartins and Rush fanatics at the same time. The reason I post is because after the Housemartins broke up, the lead singer (Paul Heaton) and drummer (Hemmingway) went on to form The Beautiful South, who became even more popular in the UK and worldwide than the Housemartins (the bassist went onto even bigger fame solo). Their 1994 greatest hits collection "Carry On Up The Charts" is among the top ...

Calling All Apples In Stereo Fans!
2007-02-26 02:56:00
There should be a good name for us, something to do with worms... if you haven't heard, there is finally a decent fan tribute album to the Apple s In Stereo being worked on, called A Tribute In Stereo, and by decent I mean more than a few songs, although the quality of what I've heard is really good... I hope it doesn't dissuade other Worm-heads (eh) from plugging in their crappy Casios and using online synths and sound effects or just singing acapella with their sister in the shower, in fact I for one am really hoping to see more lo-fi stuff, so if you're interested in the slightest, please don't hesitate to head over to the Apples Townhall and read the Tribute thread to see rules and what songs have been taken, and get your submission in by this Friday! (and if you are a fan and haven't been to the Townhall, you should easily find lots of other good stuff to listen to there.)Apples In Stereo "Same Old Drag"By now you may have heard the Apples In Stereo have released their six...

Cruisin with Trans Am (& Dungen)
2007-02-21 00:00:00
Sometimes when I listen to Tran s Am I get the feeling I'm in the imaginary backseat of one of Crockett and Tubbs' Ferraris, peeling down the streets of Miami, sometimes when manic energy, sometimes an erie brooding, often a line of coke on the way to some fabulous party or rougher predicament, only imaginary coke that doesn't suck balls the way the real stuff does, and it's dark and I tilt my head back and let the highway lights roll off my face... on the last album we let our instrumental groove get sidetracked when the guys from Trans Am got so mad at their president that they had to get vocal, but now it's back to the faux-80's cheesedick (in a good way) party, on their eighth album, released today, called "Sex Change"Trans Am "First Words"Different fine feelings are felt from faraway Sweden, which is experiencing a surge in its artists' popularity, especially Jens Lekman, Peter Bjorn & John, and Dungen (pronounced doon-yun). This Is The Shiiiiiiit
2007-02-18 23:14:00
His name is DJ Klock. Hype Machine reveals only two other blogs with his mp3s. And he may be getting ready to take over the world. Of course, I thought Cornelius was going to take over the world, but this Japanese experimental turntablism is so new and exciting that it will be even harder to ignore. It's not going to take away the macho posturing and vibrato-warble of American Top 40, but surely if enough producers hear it, they will have no choice but be influenced by the weight of its genius. Klock has recently released his third album (also feat. his band Trilo), but first in the States, called "San"... it's cohesive, but the tracks are varied. It's got the experimentalism of Otomo Yoshihide mixed with physical beats that don't so much assault your booty as lull your head into gyration, with lots of live instrumentation (flutes, toy piano, Japanese instruments, etc.) and samples (like the sounds of a child) to give his electronic music a much more organic sound than most. ...so come dip yourself in some warm pudding! Here's three sunny tracks to lift your spirits. This first may be the most obscure thing I'll ever post. It's a brand new band I found on Myspace, from San Fransisco, called We Is Shore Dedicated. Their page currently has less than fifty views and this song has around a dozen listens... I really like it how instead of the same usual staged or goofy photos they artfully use imagery from the classic film "Battleship Potemkin". This song is quite nice, starts off warm and soft, kind of reminds me of some of Paul Weller's newer solo stuff, and then Neil Young when the drums kick in... just don't tune away before the beautiful chorus! We Is Shore Dedicated "Why Can't I Sleep With The Door Ajar"And if that doesn't warm your spirits, here's one of my favorite songs that I discovered last year. It's on the first comp from Skybucket Records (a Birmingham, AL-based indie label, also w/ the Dexateens) and it's from Taylor and the Puffs, a...

This Holiday Is Safe As F"@k
2007-02-14 16:52:00
I think it's a holiday today or sum shits, I wouldn't know, innit, right, cuz me wife is fookin safe. Sorry, been listening to Goldie Lookin' Chain again. But it's true, innit, me and me wife even likes celebrating Christmas more on the 26th cause she don't buy that lie neither, right, and da deals are cheaper and it's da troof, man, she'd rather have genuine, constant, and spontaneous love than to not question why these dates is the main ones that seems to matter in the minds of the unquestioning. So what better way to kick off this phoney holiday than with some Welsh hip-hop? To understand it, you've got's ta understand Wales... western part of the UK, a lot of countryside, often derided by British urban dwellers, so to have the UK's best hip-hop come from there is something else. The Welsh are certainly a proud people, and, as anybody, love it when one of their own makes good in the world, like the Super Furry Animals. I heard Gruff Rhys from SFA doing a radio interview...

Remember, if you know anyone who you think will enjoy this, the mp3 links should all still work as long as they last at fileden. And if I have to say it again, do not miss of Montreal on this tour (or any), it's not like any other concert you've ever witnessed. When they swing back through Texas and towards the East Coast, they'll be joined by Grand Buffet, who put on a rollicking hip-hop show opening for of Montreal on the last jaunt through Austin, and Tokyo-based Elekibass, who, if my internet research is correct, also opened for of Montreal on the East Coast in 2001. What I've heard from them sounds really great, apparently they hooked up through the label that releases of Montreal in Japan.Go to this page. Haha, the Portland soundboard came out and y'all are stuck playing this stupid fucking game, hahahaha. Still, no OMM2 in the Portland show like there is in this part, and only one part to go, the encore on Tuesday. For this next part, newbies should get to know a bit more about the Elephant 6 collective that of Montreal is a part of. It's basically just a family of bands whose members help each other out and shift from band to band from time to time. The family includes (has included) of Montreal, the Apples In Stereo, Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control, Dressy Bessy, Elf Power, and the Essex Green, and is generally considered to be centered in both Athens, GA (home of REM) and Denver. If you aren't familiar with all of these bands, get to hoppin'! Optical Atlas is a wonderful blog that covers the E6 scene, and should definitely be bookmarked by everybody. You can put it next to Funeral Pudding. There are mp3s, interviews, and all the latest E6-related news. Go there, and...

Instead of making a clue or something out of it, I'll just recommend again that you read this page before (re)hearing Moonage Daydream, some good info, like the song sampled for Bowie's original. This part will be, like the others, very simple, and even more fun, even if you've already been to this site coming up and seen the sights they're always fun to see again. For those who don't know, virtually all of of Montreal 's art is done by Kevin Barnes's brother David Barnes. It is cartoonish and whimsical and wonderful, and as you'll see at the site if you haven't before, he does custom portraits for people based on a photograph and their interests, very, very cool, a reasonable price for the time and talent it takes, and you can check out some of the examples he has. Go to his site The Bee With Wheels. After you click on the image and go to the main page, you'll see a two-headed elephant at the bottom. Alright, I can see from the numbers we have a nice, small class here today, probably all smart people, so let's move it up a small notch. Kevin Barnes has been doing some collaborating on the side with Andrew from MGMT in a project that was once called Ocelot Fang. On of Montreal 's Wikipedia page, the documentation used to prove the (all-important life-changing) "notability" of Ocelot Fang, usually required to be from established media and the like, funnily enough comes from the E6 Townhall. BP from of Montreal ("Give it to me, Brian") is a member there, and chimes in often. The link where Ocelot Fang is discussed on the Of Montreal Townhall can be found on the of Montreal Wikipedia page, just go there and find where Ocelot Fang is mentioned, the link will be the number 1 in brackets. Read the discussion. On 9-21-06 BP writes about a change in Ocelot Fang's name. The third clue is the new name of the Kevin / Andrew collaboration (of course with no spaces, lower case):http://libsyn...

This part and the next are the only two (out of 6 parts total) with some minor bass guitar problems. This was most likely due to a bad connection somewhere in or near the soundboard, not human error, and did not effect the sound in the room, and again, if you've already heard "Moonage Daydream" you know the recording eventually sounds perfect. The quality of this is due completely to of Montreal 's talented sound guy, who has more to juggle now with the band than ever, including controlling some prerecorded parts on CD. Also, I'm not sure exactly what happens during "The Part y's Crashing Us Now", but I was right next to the sound man and he was throwing faders like crazy to fix it, and it's a funny listen. And he also took the time to make dedicated adjustments so this recording would be as good as it is. Be sure to say hi to him if you see him at the show, maybe buy him a beer in thanks. On of Montreal's Myspace page, there are eight friends listed. One of these is of Montreal...

Japanese experimentalist Otomo Yoshihide's collaboration with fellow former Ground Zero member Sachiko M (she apparently is into sine waves) under their moniker Filament (see japanimprov.com for more info) has been rereleased nearly ten years later. Like it or hate it, it is a bit disarming and I must agree with the promoter's description, it does indeed challenge the definition of music. It will definitely make you acutely aware of the natural sounds around you. Try it with your eyes closed and turned up. Expect the dance remix soon. Filament "Filament 1-9"I found these guys and their super-indie label on Myspace and I couldn't get the song out of my head, and believe it or not, that's usually a good thing. I wonder if young kids who don't have "Karate Kid" ingrained into their psyches will appreciate it. New of Montreal, plus a scoop
2007-01-07 11:36:00
WARNING: GRANDIOSE STATEMENTS FOLLOW: I don't quite know what to say about Of Montreal , or their new album, "Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?". I am both in love and lust with them. They are important. They are beautiful. They are fun. I normally hate statements like the following even in February, much less first week of the year, but seriously: I really don't see another album coming along this year better than this one, it's going to be #1 (Last year was Hot Chip, listenable again and again, then Belle & Sebastian's best yet, then some alt- country niceness from Scattered Pages... there, that's overwith). I need to take it out of my ears. At times I think, "This could really be the best thing I've ever heard in my life." Of Montreal have gone from the quirky little band with the nutso-chord-change songs to full-fledged electronic synth-pop powerhouse, although still with the unusual hooks that only they can create. They've been together in various incarnations for te...

I don't believe this is officially an mp3 blog until I post some Shin s. The Shins ' third comes out in about three weeks. It'll be everywhere, and more people not normally clued-in to "alt" music will be listening to it, and other people will rag on it.
