Across the Universe by The Beatles to be played in space

The track will be transmitted through the Deep Space Network - a network of antennas - on the 40th anniversary of the song being recorded. It will be aimed at the North Star, Polaris, 431 light-years from Earth. In a message to Nasa, the former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney said the project was an "amazing" feat. "Well done, Nasa," he added. "Send my love to the aliens. All the best, Paul." Meanwhile John Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, said: "I see this as the beginning of the new age in which we will communicate with billions of planets across the Universe." Fans have been asked to get involved by playing the song at midnight GMT on Monday night, the same time as the space transmission. The event’s boss Michael Eavis had previously kicked off speculation as to who would top the bill on the Pyramid Stage this year saying he had booked a big black artist from New York. Now Eavis has confirmed as NME.COM speculated at the time, that it will indeed by rapper Jay-Z taking the slot. The likes of Kanye West and had also been speculated for the slot, but Jay-Z quickly became the favourite. Speaking to BBC Somerset, Eavis explained the choice stating he wanted to "break with tradition this time and put on something totally different". He added: "He (Jay-Z) will appeal to the young people and under-25s for sure, so that's a big pull for them. It's not like the traditional one we do, like Radiohead, Coldplay and Muse and Oasis." Holly hired the plane after heating problems developed on his tourbus. All three were traveling to Fargo, North Dakota, for the next show on their Winter Dance Party Tour which Holly had set - covering 24 cities in three weeks, to make money after the break-up of his band, The Crickets, last year. 2008-02-06 17:20:00 Came across this post on digg of a youtube video featuring The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain performing a cover version of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit http://digg.com/music/Smells_Like_Teen_Sp irit_performed_by_ukulele_orchestra. Curiousity got the better of me as I'm sure for some Nirvana & Music Fans this would have Kurt Cobain turning in his grave. After internet searches I came across alot more cover versions of the songs - to a varying degree of quality. The Jury is still out for me regarding The Ukulele Orchestra. What do you think???
