Danger Doom - The Mouse And the Mask
2008-03-01 15:36:00
Danger Doom is the collaboration of two of the biggest contemporary hip-hop figures: Danger Mouse and MF Doom. The two have come together to make music on Cartoon Network’s late night show Adult Swim. This is what I call quality hip-hop, a record to have fun with and enjoy even for non-hip-hop fans. Looks like a supergroup to me, already. I found them on FaceBook first (Facebook is starting a music service for artists to promote their music and users can become fans easily). The Mouse And The Mask features collaborations with Cee-Lo (Gnarls Barkley), Ghostface Killah and Talib Kweli. This is simply awesome and I enjoyed it all the way (knowing I’m not a good hip-hop listener but somehow this can be a starting point to this genre for me) and I think I’m going to get Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco as well. Although the album is released in 2005 but sounds fresh to me, lol. Ya homes!

Hot Chip - Made In the Dark
2008-02-29 18:13:00
Hot Chip 's Made In the Dark begins with “Out At the Pictures”, exploding out your party the way Daft Punk and LCD Soundsystem or Justice do. You don’t need to be a party boy to jump off your seat and wave your hands above your head for no reason. “Shake the Fist” warms up the party non-stop with its electronic vibes. 1:55 minutes into the song it splits with: “Before we go any further I like to show you all a game I made up. This game is called sounds of the studio” and then you enter the arcade and try out some classic arcade games. It only takes a nerd to stay still and watch people shake their asses and scream their guts out; the looping effect simulates laser guns aiming and shooting at their targets in retro arcade games. “Ready For the Floor” is a sweet timely reminiscent of Kraftwerk and 80s dance in general. “Bendable Poseable” has a more LCD Soundsystem flavor in a very robotic way. Keep in mind it’s the band’s 3rd LP after 2006 The Warning. The g...

The Last Express: You Are Already A Passenger Hence Already Involved
2008-02-29 14:45:00
The advent of all those Playstations, PS2s, PS3s, Xboxs, Xbox 360s and Wii’s have not still changed my mind on the best console/PC game that I have ever played: The Last Express . I’m among those players that do not get mesmerized by visual graphics. They are great I confess and I admire the magical graphical textures and landscapes created to build a huge game like Halo or Hitman. But the thing that really turns me on in games is the story line and the environment, and by environment I don’t mean the GUI or techniques used to make dynamic moving grass beneath your feet, mental environment describes it best. And probably these two are the only things The Last Express has successfully achieved. It’s among the first PC games I experienced playing on Pentium II processor alongside Neverhood, The Monkey Island, Hopkins FBI and Grim Fandango. This 3 disk adventure RPG takes place in an Orient Express only a few days before the First World War in 1914. I have such an indescribable ...
Dark Cut 2: Become A Surgeon!
2008-02-27 10:07:00
Now, in case you haven't experienced doing a surgery before here's your chance. Even if you're a clumsy apprentice you can try this game. At least if you can't do anything but killing your patient, do not torture him to death. I started playing the first version of Dark Cut on yahoo! and GameGecko.com until I found out there is a second version available for playing on NewGrounds.com . In this very version the cartoonish interface is replaced with realistic pictures to make you feel even more like Buffalo Bill!Anyway the first version of the game is very cool, indeed. You have all the tools at hand. All you need to do is heal the desperate patient (who in some levels is not necessarily human). Though if you want to experience the real horror show, you might want to go straight to version 2.
The Clientele - God Save the Clientele
2008-02-27 09:48:00
To all those people who think John Lennon is dead, I have to say: well that’s a fact. But I don’t think his voice is. And by voice, I don’t mean the immortality of his soul and his history making personality. What I exactly mean is: His Voice! And you can hear him sing as the vocalist of The Clientele . On their 2007’s God Save the Clientele, not only the voice, but the rhythms and melodies are vividly Beatles (and vividly sung by John Lennon). I think Lennon is singing through Alasdair MacLean’s lungs. Putting all these words away, the wintry mood has a positive effect on me, because as I have mentioned a thousand times before, winter is my favorite season of the year because of his stable calmness that lasts more than any other time of the year. And I think on “I Hope I know” with whispering “Frozen” in its background you can probably hear me. My favorite track is “Isn’t Life Strange?” and if you have some wintry albums like this one, feel free to drop me a ...
Juno: An Overrated Accoustic Romance
2008-02-27 07:59:00
Each year on best picture category of the Oscars, we see an item and go “Really?” Last year it was Little Miss Sunshine which was simply astonishing. And this year it was Juno . Among the nominations was the leading actress role for Ellen Page giving a superb performance. And I have to confess I lost hope over understanding the teen language all over the movie. There’s just no way for a non-American to understand what all these teenagers are talking about. I wonder if their parents do. The script was as simple as “a teenage girl gets inadvertently pregnant and starts out connecting to a newlywed couple looking for child adaptation.” Well, that would make sense. And the movie comes out with a very successful soundtrack disk of mostly acoustic tracks performed by Belle & Sebastian, The Kinks, Cat Power, Velvet Underground as well as Sonic Youth and unfortunately this girl called Kimya Dawson who (don’t take it personal but) doesn’t seem to make sense at all and you ca...

Top 10 Songs Out Of Tom Waits "Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards"
2008-02-26 10:58:00
This album has enough tracks to make a delicious top 10 out of it. Still, the list below only reflects personal opinion. There are too many great tracks on this album, these are only some preferred ones: 10 What Keeps Mankind Alive09 Goodnight Irene08 Bend Down the Branches07 Sea Of Love06 Road To Peace05 Lie To Me04 Walk Away03 Little Drop Of Poison02 Bottom Of The World01 Take Care Of All My Children  p.s. The Wild Guess: Oscar 2008 (Results)
2008-02-25 14:46:00
Looks like I screwed up! Only 2 predictions out of 6 turned right! Anyhow I'm just happy I did it all away from prejudice and I can't wait to see Daniel Day-Lewis' performance in There Will Be Blood. And No Country For Old Men was brilliant. And I'm not stupid enough to give you a coverage on the awards ceremony! But I earlier had predicted the awards in 6 categories. Only 2!

The Hot Toddies - Smell the Mitten
2008-02-24 16:30:00
I was digging for something similar to Camera Obscura! I yearn for a close sound to Let’s Get Out Of This Country. I found this precious debut on one of Amazon’s listmanias (a collection of items chosen by customers around a certain topic). The Hot Toddies are four girls from Oakland, California and by the time I’m writing this review, they have no official website, only a MySpace page. Despite the album art and the whole girly atmosphere, I enjoyed the arrangements and loved the ‘50s pop condiments here. I got to say I still haven’t found a close equivalent for Camera Obscura and this quartet are probably driving in a different truck. This disk is somehow underestimated and I could find it hard to download. The album starts with “Sugar Daddy” from which you immediately realize the teenager environment. The band, according to themselves is influenced by The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Weezer, Mates of State, Green Day, Journey, NoFX among others. I can feel the Beach Boys...

Michael Jackson - Thriller [25th Anniversary] - The Story of Jeeragh-Nagh
2008-02-23 11:44:00
I was among the kids who freaked out! I was only 3 or 4 years old, when my parents took me to their friends’ house. They were a couple, the husband was an orthopedist and wife was my dad’s classmate so she was a dentist. Sadly they divorced after a couple of years. It’s all a lucid memory for me. In that era, Michael Jackson was ruling the world. He was the one and only pop star that mattered, and he was my childhood hero. I’ve been growing up watching him moonwalk and doing his dirty dance and I never regret that. It was at the very couple’s apartment where the story began. They had a small TV room and VHS was something new by then in Iran. (Knowing it was still war zone with Iraq) I could never watch the show completely, I always freaked out to watch Michael Jackson turn into a dancing zombie, and it was unbearable for me to watch. That’s why I created a brand new word for it: “Jeeragh-Nagh”, yes! From that time on, all my parent friends called me “Jeeragh-Nagh...

The Wild Guess: Oscar 2008 (Predictions)
2008-02-22 20:30:00
I'm gonna make a wild guess almost a night before the 80th Oscar s night. I have never done this before, but last year my predictions turned out right on Martin Scorsese taking the award for best direction and best picture for Departed (though I belive Scorsese has many better films), Forrest Whitaker receiving the award for his timeless performance in Last King Of Scotland and Helen Mirren for Queen. That's not a bad record is it. So I'm going to publish my thoughts this year. So here's my predictions on my favorite categories listed below. I have changed my mind after watching some of the films and I have chosen only certain categories for I haven't been able to watch all the films this year. You can view the entire nominees list here and make a wild guess for yourself! I have made my predictions in red(though I don't think the page will be available in the future.)Actor in a leading roleGeorge Clooney for Michael Clayton;Daniel Day-Lewis for There Will Be Blood;Johnny Depp f...

Bitter:Sweet - The Mating Game
2008-02-22 12:03:00
I was about to write something on the new  Morcheeba album (Dive Deep). I was in love with the first track “Enjoy the Ride” but as I gave the album a play, I was let down by the rest of the content. If there’s a single for this song, get it but the album is not worth the try. As far as it’s trip-hop talk, I think everyone should give The Mating Game by a band called Bitter :Sweet a listen. It was about a year ago I think when I saw Microsoft’s Zune on the cover of a Persian magazine, and I immediately bought the thing (it was during my military service in Iran’s borders and this magazine was my savior out of solitude and depression). First thing that grabbed my attention on the cover was the album art used on Zune’s LCD monitor: Bitter:Sweet. Microsoft had previously used some very cool tunes packaged with its Windows Media Player including Beck’s “Beautiful Way” and David Byrne’s “Like Human’s Do”, so I though it shouldn’t be that bad. A couple of mont...
Beck - Odelay [Deluxe Edition Re-issued]
2008-02-19 17:10:00
It was the summer of 1997, I think when I switched on to MTV to watch a video by Bush. Gavin Rossdale was my hero by then and I just thought there’s no other band on earth that can provide a sound like Bush and there’s no better voice than Gavin Rossdale’s cracked lung. They were simply my first, my middle and my last. When I saw Beck ’s face – I think it was the video for “New Pollution”- I went: “Who’s this weirdo? Why the hell is he dressed like a ‘60s school nerd, Beck? What a stupid name!” And he won the awards that year for best male video I guess. It was just a matter of 365 days, because the next year, in 1998, Beck’s “Deadweight” was nominated for best video at MTV’s movie awards alongside Bush’s “Mouth” (Soundtrack of “An American Werewolf In Paris”). Mixed feelings started to grow on me! The video was just too great to deny. The guy just looks so good in that white suit and everything is in reverse. The video was directed by Michel G...

Jack Johnson - Sleep Through the Static
2008-02-19 11:56:00
Sleep Through The Static is darker than Curious George OST “(LMAO, this was a comment someone made somewhere on this album: “Darker”). Well, Our Hawaiian fella is back and he has felt like releasing another disk again and here he is. The good news is: “Jack Johnson has not changed!” and the bad news is: “Gosh! Jack Johnson has not changed!” Let’s put it this way: Now that you have purchased Sleep Through the Static by Jack Johnson and were probably let down by the (very) bad album art, we can divide the listeners into two different categories:The first category in which I’m a member too Are Jack’s old fans. I become a fan of Jack Johnson since Brushfire Fairytales and was so moved by the simple acoustic music he makes with such a smooth masculine voice. Jack got better by time, his second effort On & On had nothing less to offer, in fact it had its own vibes like “Taylor”, “Horizon Has Been Defeated” and “Gone”. Jack was definitely making somet...
The Twilight Sad - Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters
2008-02-18 15:38:00
First thing that grabs the attention of the listener while listening to Twilight Sad’s debut Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters is James Graham’s thick Scottish accent. In some cases, the very fact that unintentionally makes the record a “different” experience causes interests to vanish. Some really can’t help it. And Despite thefact that the album art looks like vintage magazine advertisements or early comic books, the music of Twilight Sad is exquisitely atmospheric and the album title describes this atmosphere so much better. 2007 was probably the best possible year to release an album like Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters knowing works such as Panda Bear, Deerhunter, Animal Collective, The Clientele, Besnard Lakes and Frog Eyes sold well enough both commercially and critically. Looks so contagious these days, this kind of new indie rock. It only takes a novice to throw a line like “all the songs sound the same” we can put it only this way, instead: the co...
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
2008-02-17 09:20:00
It’s a difficult job bringing up something that makes sense after a huge success like 2005 Gimme Fiction, an album that could be representative as a firm example of true alternative rock. Gimme Fiction was an album of exquisiteness and balance with multitude of memory resident moments such as “The Two Sides Of Monsieur Valenti”, “I Turn My Camera On” and “My Mathematical Mind” (a bunch of them were used as soundtracks to Will Farell’s Stranger Than Fiction). The return from such a remarkable work is not everyone’s job. Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is an heir of Gimme Fiction’s magnificent groove but lacks the soul. It looks like a full catalog for “Two Sides Of Monsieur Valenti” and “I Turn My Camera On” except for the wonderful closer “Black Like Me”. Here on Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (sounds like the start of a truck’s engine to me), Spoon has a focus on the groove, that’s why the record has turned out this Danceable! After the cool starter “Don’t Make Me A Target...
Sparklehorse - Dreamt For Light Years In the Belly Of A Mountain
2008-02-17 08:58:00
Mark Linkus was bound to a 5 year gap to reconstruct himself and went through a handful of gigantic hardships. Our DIY guy offers his best work to date (according to the reviews), this is actually the first record I hear from Sparklehorse and I was only blown away by the title of vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot, and I’m so interested to hear what he has offered in an album with such a tremendous title. But in Dreamt For Light Years In the Belly Of A Mountain , Mark Linkus comes with a variety of styles, but he keeps them all in one package with his favorite noises. One can easily define this album as a concept work on values like living and dying. His whispering serene voice which becomes more masculine after the first two songs, “Please Don’t Take My Sunshine Away” and “Getting It Wrong”, adds to the gloomy yet tranquil environment of the disk. And let’s call the noise used somewhat wisely here “Sweet Noise”, just like ones we heard on every Grandaddy album with...
Get Your Band Name! ("King Dork" by Frank Portman)
2008-02-16 16:48:00
King Dork is the name of a book by Frank Portman about a high school loser called Tom Henderson (a.k.a King Dork) who discovers a book called The Catcher in the Rye after his father's death and faces very importants facts about different things including girls, the Bible and guitars. I think Will Farell is going to make a movie based on it in 2008. Reading an album review on Pitchfork, this ad grabs my attention about this book saying: "Get Your King Dork Band Name!", wow. The book has the ability to tell your band name, in case you were or wanted to be member of a band: That's Me! Me and my friend Mehrdad have actually started a very minimalistic band thing. I was thinking of different names for it and I was about to open a new website/blog for ourselves. Here are some of the names I was thinking of during this short period: The Exits, The Corridors, The Exists(!!), The How Comes, The Have Nots, The Affirmatives, Bohemian Serenity, The Eclectics, Rain Check, The Tranquils, Doobie...

Songs For Drinking Occasions: A Guide To My "Post Smirnoff" Selection (Disk
2008-02-14 12:39:00
What is Post Smirnoff?Post Smirnoff refers to the name of my first disk of song collection for drinking occasions. Not every oldie receives the visa to be included in this disk. I gathered all these 20 tracks together to provide a somehow disconnection mood for the listener from the outside world and step into a vintage imaginary lava-lamp square room with 50s atmospheric environment. Not all the songs included here are from the 50s (actually there’s one recorded in 1910 among some 60s as well as contemporaries) but the drinking mood the collection provides to the listener remains constant. Most songs included in this very disk of Post Smirnoff are derived and stolen from particular movies to sail away the listener to that very vintage mood. My closest fellows have a general understanding out of this whole thing, but I know the disk would not make sense for outsiders (!) who are not familiar with the movies or the 50s and 60s cultural environment, but if they can relate to the th...

Jack White's Grammy Thing + Adding Some Negative Energy On Grammy 2007
2008-02-14 06:42:00
This guy is going to take the trophy home every time his semi-band appears on alternative grammy list. The White Stripes look so invincible in this category. They won their 3rd alternative grammy for “Icky Thump”, a record too harsh and noisy to experience. “Icky Thump” offers nothing newer than “Get Behind Me Satan”, just the way “Get Behind Me Satan” offered nothing newer than “Elephant”. It’s been like 3 years I have lost my appetite over grammys and Oscars. 2007 had some great alternative albums under its belly: Arcade Fire, Wilco, Panda Bear, Arctic Monkeys, Beirut, Devendra Banhart, Interpol, Of Montreal, Okkervil River, Polyphonic Spree, Spoon, Stars, and Super Furry Animals among others. And Radiohead was probably not worth a nomination – the album that has conquered most music press. But as soon as this Jack White shows up, apparently nothing seems more valuable than the precious ear-damaging noise he creates with Meg White’s un-pretty drum sound. ...

Devendra Banhart - Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon
2008-02-13 19:56:00
The four track machine is apparently gone. Devendra Banhart returns with his second full-band work after critically acclaimed “Cripple Crow” with an eclectic collection of songs recorded in Topanga Canyon. The “freak folk” tag utterly describes what’s going on in Banhart’s music. Though he has come to the shores on a different boat this time, a well equipped ship somehow. “Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon” is a precious rock album feeding diverse audience. Raised by music and drawing all his 27 year living glory, he represents a dream-folk utopia juxtaposed with mostly grotesque and facetious lyrics; this Venezuelan phenomenon offers a distinctive 16 song collection of dreamy and catchy tunes in the most exotic method. His music is reminiscent of ‘50s style gramophone versions of folkloric vibes. Unlike previous works such as his debut EP “Black Babies”, “Rejoicing in the Hands” and “Nino Rojo”, Smokey offers more instrumentation and less consistency. B...
AllMusic Filtered (Add it to your diaries)
2008-02-13 19:47:00
Continuing the filtering policy in Iran, I just encountered that stupid sign again while trying to open allmusic website. And I have no idea why! AllMusic is simply a very professional website on music containing no nudity, sexual or violent material. Many music blogs have been filtered. Filtering is so easy, it's just a click away but it's the poor surfer that will lose a lot. I personally have no problem unf-iltering the pages but this "action" is so cruel. I don't know what is considered "illegal" in a website like Pitchfork or AllMusic that makes that stupid man click on it to filter it away. Then I thought for an instant: Music is a sin! Being music is simply enough. It's not about nudity or anything related. Go watch Salo!

I had previously decided to become a Springfield citizen, I rented a room there. I got a little bored there and took a trip to Southpark . It feels more cozy here, I don't know if I stay but you can move to Southpark, too. This is how I look in Southpark I suppose.

New Pornographers - Challengers: Truth In One Free Afternoon
2008-02-12 06:05:00
Neko Case must be proud of herself being (only) a member of a giant power-pop band like The New Pornographers , while 2005’s Twin Cinema remained an endearing favorite of most of the critics, “Challengers” is a becoming strong extension of that, descending in guitar sounds and layered mix, “Challengers”, except for one or two songs looks like a coffee-break for the band. A.C. Newman has written 9 out of 12 songs here. Although I picked the albums art to this album as the worst album cover of 2007, the music is way out different. New Pornographers music is so cerebral and mature that demands repeated plays and is best heard and deciphered through solitary listening. It can barely be suitable as background theme songs because the enormous sound layers and power guitar riffs used cannot be tolerated by a normal ear and unlike all those Cat Power records and all Neko Case albums (except for “Fox Confessor Brings the Flood”) needs focus and attention. The band is considered ...

Top 50 Songs That Make Me Vomit!
2008-02-11 15:20:00
The songs listed below are either too disgusting for me to hear or extremely overrated in my country or anywhere else. I have also added a short comment for some items to let you know why I hate it and it makes me vomit! Some are not necessarily bad. It's just me! But you know I'm not alone. This list could go on but I stopped at 50. Maybe I'll add another 50 items sometime later.Eagles – Hotel California; [Could be a reasonable one if it stayed what it was, I think Afghan workers are listening to this these days, it's found everywhere and I still believe The Eagles are a one hit wonders.]Celine Dion – My Heart Will Go On; [Celine Dion is a horse!]Lionel Richie – Hello; [The idea behind this song is the dummiest! Lionel Richie is ugly!]Metallica – Nothing Else Matters; [No one can ever tell what this song is about. I Can: Nothing]Eric Clapton – Layla; [The only melodic song by Clapton has turned out the most cliche]Bryan Adams – Everything I Do (I Do It For You);Los ...

I have no idea how it calculates a blog's readability. There's actually no more explanations and options available on the page. All you have to do is insert your blog's address in the textbox and click enter. My blog's readability level is "College (undergrad)", great for a non-English speaking boy. I checked out Aidin Vaziri's page (he's a music journalist for Amazon, EW, etc) the rank it gave me was "Junior High School" Then I checked flipflopflying, a blog that was recommended in Flaming Lips website for author's graphical icons: "High School" (the guy lives in Lincoln, UK) and last, I checked out a friend of mines weblog (she lives in New Zealand) and guess what I got: "Elementary". Grizzly Bear - Yellow House
2008-02-10 12:05:00
The album art reflects the atmosphere used in the album perfectly, “Yellow House ” is a very moody and gloomy album. It’s like a folk record played by four ghosts. There’s banjo used with sad tunes from far away. “Knife” looks like a quiet threatening ballad for a relationship full of discrepancies and lies and revenge is sweet (“Can’t You Feel the Knife?”) this is probably the best song on the disk. Yet, the record is precisely worked over to turn out cohesive and hauntingly atmospheric. The band has a very wise marketing strategy to extend their vivid presence by releasing an EP in 2007, “Friend” that includes alternate takes and covers of “Yellow House ” by Zack Condon (Beirut), Band of Horses, CSS, Atlas Sound and others. It looks more like a “rarities” disk and not an EP (not everyone puts 10 songs in an EP). A very right-in-place use of instrumentation is applied to the tunes that does not cause noise (like most Built To Spill and Sonic Youth albums...

Song Surgery: "A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left" by Andrew Bird
2008-02-09 13:50:00
Andrew Bird is a complicated guy, a professional whistler and a weird yet powerful alternative songwriter. “Andrew Bird & the Mysterious Production of Eggs” is definitely Bird’s best work to date. Here, I’m not trying to focus on the album as a whole; it’s only this 3rd track that grabs the quick attention of every listener with some musical and English knowledge. “A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left ” lyrically has mixed concepts involved. I read almost 130 opinions reflected by fans, some of them very useful indeed. So what I did was to check for every unknown word in it at first and then try to figure out what is the general idea behind this mysterious song. I also translated the whole song to Farsi. I took the lyrics apart to three different pieces. It looks like a David Lynch movie to me: although you grab some clues and try to put it together, there’s always a missing piece. The general theme of the song according to different people can be drug abu...

Another DIY Genius (An Inspiring Picture)
2008-02-09 08:22:00
Yesterday I was so moved by this picture of Zack Condon. It's hard to believe that Beirut is mostly a DIY job by this talented young boy! It inspires me alot, just look at his desktop, there's nothing much in it except a PC, a powerful microphone and a saxaphone and perhaps some other instruments. I wish I had talent like that. Elliott Smith and Sufjan Stevens are multi-instrumentalists too, but not as young as Condon. The guy is a genius. I'm so moved! (look at the bottles in the corner of the room, heavy drinker!) I took the photo from a blog called Rusty Drums.
