Nine Inch Nails - The Slip: A Band That Keeps On Giving
2008-05-05 18:53:00
The countdown had already started when I downloaded the free single “Discipline” and wrote about it right away. For all those not-so-serious fans, if they have looked in the properties of the MP3 file you could see the message “Go to www.nin.com May 5” (and all those real fans know how NIN enjoys playing games). I watched my RSS reader on May 5th hour to hour and saw the countdown go like 6 hours, 4 hours, and 2 hours and then there was Halo 27 and wow! This band has become such a giver, boy! Here you are the new Nine Inch Nails thing absolutely free and Trent Reznor also has appreciated his fans support during all these years with a few lines:” as a thank you to our fans for your continued support, we are giving away the new nine inch nails album one hundred percent free, exclusively via nin.com. The music is available in a variety of formats including high-quality MP3, FLAC or M4A lossless at CD quality and even higher-than-CD quality 24/96 WAVE. Your link will include a...

Winki Roundup: M83/Ruby Suns/Drive-By Truckers/Flight Of the Conchords
2008-05-05 09:54:00
Drive By Truckers have been simulating and developing Southern rock for a couple of years now, and Brighter Than Creations Dark – their fresh release is no exception. An acoustic start like “Two Daughters And A Beautiful Wife” comes as sterilized as any country and blues thing and then the real deal begins. I personally prefer the country side of Drive By Truckers when then get down on a wonderful 2 minute track as simple as “Bob” but I guess that’s just not what they are about. Their music is better described in “The Righteous Path”, a very Bryan Adams style rock ‘n roll soulful work or a more Mick Jagger-ish tune like“3 Dimes Down”. What’s fun about Brighter Than Creation’s Dark is the duration. The Southern rock ‘n roll goes on for 75 minutes and if you’re attending anything live by the Drive-By's, don’t hesitate because they’re pretty good at it.MP3 Download: Drive By Truckers - Bob For all the music folks who enjoyed the way Gruff Rhys (Super...

On Pitchfork Rates
2008-05-04 19:34:00
Pitchfork Media is not kidding anyone. Since some 10 years ago when they gained control over indie music reviews and took giant media attentions, they are just rocking in their own free world. They brutalize everyone they want and keep their own favorites on high summits according to their editor’s will. Well, I have nothing against that personally. It does not concert anyone or anything if you just like to harshly criticize something or not. It’s all so proper until you start to rate items based on personal ideas. Frankly, I am really pleased with most of the votes and ratings. But there are in fact, ratings that bring surprises and sometimes shocks. You hear some real mediocre albums getting a “9” rate while some of your most loved albums getting a very low rate. Pitchfork is strong enough to alter the way you think about your favorite band’s music. If you still like Tool’s 2001 Lateralus, you better check out its rate on Pitchfork (okay you don’t have to check, it...

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
2008-05-02 10:37:00
Before you just emerge into the scene, give everyone a little taste of what you are and how your music sounds with an EP. After a couple of months when you have pinned your name everywhere in the indie music business, come out with the REAL deal. And Fleet Foxes have followed my lead on this (oh, really?). Their earlier EP was simply brilliant and gained a lot of credits for them. They come from Seattle (no, not the Seattle you have know from the early 90s) and they have brought us some '70s pop thing a.k.a. baroque harmonic pop jams, according to themselves. It’s early in their courier so all they have is this MySpace page where all they ever claim to be is some guys who happen to play music for fun and are into all kinds of music. But Skye, Robin, Nicholas, Casey, and Christian seem to be a little more than just-for-fun players. As I have mentioned in their EP review earlier, they are pretty good at vocal harmonies and the music sounds so old-school and mature. Their influences...
The Magnetic Fields - Distortion
2008-04-29 07:15:00
Imagine an evening, filled with TV and popcorn. You hear a big crowd chanting outside but you ain’t got energy enough to stand up and go take a look outside. Or maybe you’re used to this stuff since they established a stadium just across the street and not only football matches is held there, but it shows warm welcomes to music gigs that tend to perform once in a while! At first the sound made you nuts and scream out your guts out of the window for your citizenship rights are brutalized. But now, you’re just… worn out. So, you just mute your Discovery Channel and listen to the sound outside. It’s a band called The Magnetic Fields singing funny songs from far away. That’s probably what it feels like when you listen to The Magnetic Fields ’ new “experience” called Distortion . And that’s quite what it is, but not distortion like you used to hear in Sonic Youth and Nirvana but one that’s coming out of some romantic songs. Jesus And Mary Chain: yes, I know. Stephin Me...
Top 10 Stone Temple Pilots Songs
2008-04-28 15:50:00
If Scott Weiland has a diary, it would be terribly sad and drastic. I think his life was more dedicated to drugs than music and family life. Stone Temple Pilots , like every other '90s grunge band had a sunny side. Most of my favorite Stone Temple Pilots songs are from the latter. Here are my top 10 STP favorites. I hope it don't offend all those die-hard grunge fans because actually the only grunge song on my list is the Grammy winning "Plush".10 Wonderful09 I Got You08 Days Of the Week07 Plush06 Pretty Penny05 Art School Girl04 Lady Picture Show03 Creep02 Sour Girl01 Interstate Love Song

The Raconteurs - Consolers Of The Lonely: Jack White Is A Genius
2008-04-27 15:50:00
Frankly, if you remember one of my previous posts on Jack White , I became a bit pissed off when he received the third alternative Grammy for Icky Thump. I had nothing against him and I think I was a bit jealous as well. I started getting all that was left from The White Stripes, all their stuff from their 1999 debut up to 2007’s Icky Thump. I found most of them pretty much sounding the same while they are never boring, always entertaining and Jack White sounds like an innovative craftsperson who’s always trying to experience different stuff. But for The White Stripes, the sound has signature and has remained unique so far and that alone is of a great value in today’s modern music. My personal favorite among all the White Stripes albums still remains untouched: White Blood Cells. If it was not about experience, the album was about fun and had more hits than any other White Stripes album. Now let’s forget about the whole Stripes thing and honestly I could never relate to Meg W...

I've Been Fooled: I Downloaded A Fake Version Of Death Cab's Narrow Stairs!
2008-04-26 11:56:00
God! I feel so fooled by downloading a fake version of the new Death Cab For Cutie Album! The version I downloaded was a fake one. The only true song on it was "I Will Possess Your Heart" and the rest is by an indie German band called Velveteen! I can't believe I just wrote about this album right here instead of this "Fooled" text! Thanks to one of my blog readers who was kind enough to inform me about that. Wow! I just thought Benjamin Gibbard's voice has grown more masculine and that's hilarious! God Bless the man who commented on this entry. But anyway the song you're about to download now is "real"!MP3 Download:Death Cab For Cutie - I Will Possess Your HeartFile Size: 15.75 MBDuration: 8:35Bitrate: 256 kbps

Nine Inch Nails - Discipline: Download the Single For Free
2008-04-23 20:23:00
On another race for a huge music revolution, Nine Inch Nails have released their new single “Discipline ” for free through their nin.com website. I was blown away. It was great to experience Ghosts: some 36 instrumental works by NIN (read my review). And now they provide you with this new single, so easy to dance with, just like “The Hand That Feeds” and their earlier stuff. I think it’s Radiohead’s turn to release a new single through their Dead Air Space! Lol. I was so excited so here’s the song for free! Year Of the Horse
2008-04-23 19:52:00
If you’re a true Neil Young fan, you have to deal with two different sides of him. One is his classic pop glorious figure known by his timeless hits such as “Heart Of Gold”, “Old Man”, “Needle And the Damage Done”, etc. That’s honestly whom I adore. But there’s another rock ‘n roll side to Neil Young: Why do I keep fucking up? The very side, you can see a nice documentary film about it in The Year Of the Horse : Directed by Jim Jarmusch. He once described to the media how he got to meet Neil Young while he was directing Dead Man and how Neil Young Finally agreed to make an improvised guitar work for the film’s soundtrack. Now Jarmusch is behind the camera for a hundred minutes of documentary live film about Young and his long time band The Crazy Horse. It was actually the first time I saw Neil Young in such a rock ‘n roll figure. The live concert has nine songs by Neil Young and The Crazy Horse and in betweens there are some interviews and old videos by band...
This Winki's 5 Star Albums: GIVE UP by THE POSTAL SERVICE
2008-04-23 10:04:00
A 5 star album in my opinion is one that never gets old, even when it’s an electro-pop thing. And yes, no one denies Benjamin Gibbard’s pop side, but maybe no one really expected such a pop gem from two indie guys without high hopes in 2003. And Dntel was not a huge name, either. This album was prior to Death Cab For Cutie’s worldly recognition, before they release 2004’s Transatlanticism and 2005’s Plan which went platinum. And you probably know why they called themselves The Postal Service , but for those who don’t, the United States Post Office was how the two (Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello) traded their samples and thoughts on their collaboration. There are albums that can be proven only through time and repeated listens. Give Up is an electro-pop album that takes you to your past. What you hear is electronic but that does not mean you are living in an electronic music era. This is where electronic music is not made and composed to make you dance (though there are ...

Jonny Greenwood Is the Controller
2008-04-21 07:03:00
You know it’s always fun making selections for yourself and keep sending them to your friends. But what’s more fun is when your friend makes a selection and spreads his mind to you. You receive a disk and just push play and listen carefully to your friend’s choices. Good company is a gift, right? But what’s even more fun is when your favorite artist chooses his/her favorite tracks for his/her fans. That’s great news for you, so you go buy the item to see what your favorite artist is listening to. These kinds of disk are best found under the name of “Late Nite Tales” and have been released by bands such as The Flaming Lips, Jamiroquai among others. But you know what? The album I’m talking about is simply none of the above. It’s about when your favorite artist spends 6 months searching for a selection of 17 songs from a genre that is never heard through his music or his band. That artist’s name can easily be Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood ! And this disk Jonny Greenw...

She & Him - Volume One: Following Camera Obscura's Lead In A Timely Man
2008-04-20 08:05:00
In She & Him, "She" is Zooey Deschanel who had been previously seen in movies such as The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford, playing as Dorothy Evans, as well as Elf, Almost Famous and some others. But the “Him” which plays a very key role mostly in the background is M. Ward (he appears sometimes as the backing vocals in “You Really Gotta Hold On Me” and “I Should Have Known Better”) but if you’re buying this album merely to hear the 60s style voice of M. Ward, you better find another place. She & Him's Volume One offers 13 classic pop gems (sometimes collided with country vibrations). I think David Lynch will be delighted to hear this record and probably would regret he didn’t put some of them in Mulholland Dr. Remember the tunes used in that film “I Told Every Little Star” by Linda Scott and “16 Reasons” by Connie Stevens? Well, She & Him is not that far away from that mood. The two have come together for a Martin Hayes fil...

Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
2008-04-18 17:56:00
This is one of my early reviews. It's funny when I read it now and it's gross, but I'm gonna leave this untouched, 4 people out of 4 have found this review helpful in Amazon. This is the related page:Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots is a half-psychedelic-half-pop journey that transforms u into a person bright w/ joy and then changes your mood to a depressed sad man! These dual transformations are frankly worth buying the ticket to the journey. After two extraordinary works of art (The Soft Bulletin & Zaeerika), The Flaming s returned w/ this delicious valuable must-have album in 2k2. They prove to be extremely brave in experimenting different materials in both instruments and lyrics. The Soft Bulletin was a full symphonic album w/ less guitar sounds, Yoshimi is electro-pop! Hello! This album can be sliced up to 2 completely different parts : The First part (First 4 tracks) is about a virtual battle between a little girl named Yoshimi and the giant evil pink robots. Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid
2008-04-17 07:05:00
Guy Garvey’s British accent adds up to the mixture of what I can say patient-melodies found on The Seldom Seen Kid. Elbow serves as a more optimistic shadow of Radiohead while parting its way from anything experimental. The band’s previous work, 2005’s Leaders Of the Free World had poor sales, but was acclaimed by artists such as Blur, R.E.M and U2 (according to the product description). That’s where many bands simply fall apart and bid farewell to their whole musical career, but this is not the first time they have experienced this. So, I guess Elbow’s music is not revolving around its album sales. Guy Garvey is apparently pleased with what he has done, judging by his expression upon making hit songs on an NME interview: “If we wanted to change what we are and make hits, we could do so very easily”, and that’s why you hear Elbow as somehow a very indie version of something like Coldplay or Peter Gabriel. They’ve simply decided not to blow up stadiums and making V...

Axl Rose: Gun's Roses "Chinese Democracy" Is Worth $13 Dollars and 14 Years
2008-04-17 06:05:00
New long awaited Guns ‘N Rose s album called Chinese Democracy will "probably" hit the stores any time soon, and what has kept Axl Rose and friends some 14 years to accomplish this “myth” (laugh out loud please) can’t exactly do the bands any good about that because they have apparently grown some 14 years older an according to Mr. Rose (or Dr. Pepper or who really cares?) “It's been 14 years of silence, it’s been 14 years of pain, it’s been 14 years that are gone forever, And I'll never have again (Use Your Illusion 2: 14 Years)”. But hey man! The guys who used to listen to your Use Your Illusion and Appetite For Destruction or whatever have settled down with 3 kids and some Rihanna and Coldplay CDs in their libraries. And he’s probably right, Axl I mean. Nothing is still clear about this album but Rose has claimed to have spent $13 million dollars to produce this thing!! So we’re going to expect some Deep Purple’s Machine Head or Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of...

Madonna - Ray Of Light: About A Decade Ago, Madonna Recorded An Album To Be
2008-04-15 15:34:00
Madonna turns 50 this year and her lifestyle can only be explained using “Wow”s and “Oh My God!”s and this and that. Sean Penn to Guy Richie, children’s book to Erotica is like a sinus wave on a diagram to me. Among all Madonna albums around, I could only connect to one and a half. She’s going to come up with her new album Hard Candy, judging by its product description a “brilliant up-tempo collection that adds a hip-hop beat to the cultural icon’s club sensibilities, thanks to collaborations with Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams, and Nate "Danja" Hills”, I’m not going to have high hopes for this one. I’m going to stick to my previous favorite: It’s been a decade or so since the release of her best album in my opinion, that is 1998’s Ray Of Light . She came back in 2000 with Music which I was not really a big fan of, and then returned with another great-but-not-that-great American Life in 2003 and then turned into a 90s techno junkie in 2005...

Hercules and Love Affair - Hercules and Love Affair: Antony Goes Brilliant
2008-04-13 10:32:00
I first came upon Antony’s quirky but tender voice through his 2005 I Am A Bird Now (under the name of Antony and the Johnsons) and I heard another one of his singles called “I Fell In Love With a Dead Boy”, the lyrics and vocals were simply astonishing and weird. Hercules and Love Affair is led by Andrew Butler and features Antony on main vocals besides Nomi and Kim Ann. If you’re into classic disco-pop that you mostly heard in '70s and used to dance with, this new electronic experience of Hercules and Love Affair is quite an answer for you. Their “Hercules Theme” track which is in my opinion one of the best works here and is freely available on their microsite and you can get it by filling a small form. Now don’t expect this high-rate album (according to Pitchfork and their surprising functions and factors on rating albums) to blow your mind up by adrenaline-pumping beats like what you hear on Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, Basement Jaxx or Fatboy Slim. Instead it brin...

Remix Your Own Version Of Radiohead's "Nude" and Get Voted (As You Pay!)
2008-04-12 19:26:00
Yes, Nine Inch Nails did follow Radiohead’s lead on releasing Ghosts, but now it’s Radiohead’s turn. Nine Inch Nails offered mixing possibilities for their 2007 album Year Zero for free. If you’re a Radiohead fan, just click on RadioheadRemix .com to BUY separate components of their song “Nude” and mix it your way. You don’t have to use all the elements and you can add your own sounds and effects, and then you’ll be able to put your own widget on your MySpace, Facebook, or your website/blog to get voted by your readers. I felt like remixing this song, and then I gave the song another try and it was so fucking depressing to be remixed, man! I gave up! Besides I’m not a good DJ at all. But I know some friends who CAN make out a good thing out of this. I think “Jigsaw Falling into Place” was a better choice for a remix, anyway! MediaFire.com : Upload Your Files Free!
2008-04-12 07:38:00
I just felt like recommending this neat and simple file uploading website for anyone who needs to upload his pictures, music, movies and anything under 100MBs. I tried a lot of places on web for a simple one and registered in a lot of file servers like Quotaless, PersianGig or some others but their uploading servers were so slow and dysfunctional. It took ages to upload a simple 4 MBs MP3. But MediaFire is a great solution to all this. You can upload as many files as you want and use their links in your website, weblog or anywhere with descriptions. I used to work as a web-application programmer somewhere about two years ago and it was so difficult to monitor the uploading process status to the user and if you look closer on file-uploaders on your Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail (attachments) you can see that this process is invisible and you can never see how many percentages of the uploading process is done, but this issue is history on MediaFire as you can vividly see if your file is gett...

Counting Crows - Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings
2008-04-12 07:12:00
Phrases such as “Your previous record was so much better” or even worse “Your very first record made a lot more sense” has become a cliché, but many bands are suffering from hearing these phrases over and over. Take Pearl Jam and Green Day as instances. No Pearl Jam album will ever become another Ten and no other Green Day album could overcome their 1994’s Dookie, American Idiot might have sold so much better but it will never be another Dookie! And I think Counting Crows are suffering from the very thing. “August And Everything After, man! That was the best.” I just don’t know how many times Adam Duritz and his friends have just heard this. Well, August and Everything After was genuinely a great pop-rock effort with a super-hit like “Mr. Jones” and a couple of other great songs. They returned with a more up-beat rock ‘n roll noisy thing called Recovering the Satellites in 1996 which was probably a successful one as well but I don’t know! (lol) and then came...

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!!
2008-04-11 14:16:00
Nick Cave (a.k.a the coolest contemporary mustache in music industry) and the Bad Seeds want you to dig! The Grinderman is probably gone as you hear no more riot punk pussy blues because you’re now Lazarus ! This album is one of this 50 year old man’s best works, as well as one of the firmest performances by The Bad Seeds. Despite the loss of a member Blixa Bargeld (guitarist/piano player) the band has now a new member, multi-instrumentalist Warren Ellis who has a duet soundtrack album (Proposition OST) with Nick Cave as well. Ellis seems to be a deep breath of fresh air as Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds never have sounded better than this. Nick Cave is accomplishing more and more milestones in his career by writing film scores (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford), acting, doing side-projects (Grinderman) and now a fantastic new record for his rock fans. If Abattoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus was an English album, Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!! is a full American work ...

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Chronicle Vol.1: The 20 Greatest Hits
2008-04-10 09:38:00
In the country where I live in (Iran), among the minority that listens to rock music, there’s only a defined limited range of band names that people listen to. When people are talking about 60s and 70s rock, they are mostly talking about Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Eloy (a German band) and some few others. Names such as Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Lynyrd Skynyrd and even The Who are seldom referred to or heard. I have just recently come upon this Chronicle album of Creedence Clearwater Revival after experiencing Grateful Dead for a couple of months and I realized how cool 60s rock ‘n roll era has been. And I was blown away by the number of hit songs they have in their career. I had previously seen their album mentioned in many lists such as Amazon and RollingStone but I had never given them a single chance, because I was too involved with indie music in my head (and I still am). But I guess I will spend some time in the near future on some classic ro...

Liam Finn - I'll Be Lightning: Only If You Miss Elliott Smith's Voice
2008-04-08 07:09:00
This is not an album for the fans of Crowded House and Neil Finn’s voice, but if you miss the late Elliott Smith’s tender voice, Liam Finn will probably fill up his empty space for you in a superficial way. Liam Finn might be son of Neil Finn but vocally is heir of Elliott Smith (a very energetic Elliot Smith though). Now, it sounds like music’s definition in the form of “a couple of guys with certain skills coming together as vocalist, bassist, guitarist and drummer and probably a keyboard player” that we recall as bands is slowly transforming into “a sound that someone has in mind and trying to perform it as suitable as possible”. Liam Finn is a DIY guy, too. Just like Elliott Smith and just like Beirut’s Zach Condon. In I’ll Be Lightning , Liam succeeds in bringing a pleasant nostalgia of the listener’s ear but instrumentally, he’s a bit driving another track other than the one Elliott Smith was driving in. Most Elliott Smith songs were composed acoustically ...

Neon Neon - Stainless Style
2008-04-07 06:32:00
During the past 3 years, some bands have tried to make a sweet flashback to the music of 60s (Camera Obscura) and 70s (The Decemberists or Wolfmother) and here, a weird collaboration between Gruff Rhys of the precious Super Furry Animals and a hip hop producer Boom Bip brings you a semi-concept album mostly 80s style. The sound you hear on Neon Neon’s Stainless Style is mostly what you might have expected in the mid-80s from bands such as Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, The Cars. It is just a more clean and amplified version of such things. And it doesn’t have anything to do with anything Super Furry Animals, it’s just a whole different story. I really enjoyed the atmosphere filled with synthesizers and all those 80s vibes with fast drum beats. When the songs revolve around Gruff Rhys, although Rhys’ voice is not quite 80s and can only fit into something like Super Furry Animals, it’s all good, catchy, a bit night mood and suitable. But there are moments in this record that simp...
