Heroic Brass (Colombia)
2006-12-24 16:25:00
Heroica Brass is the only brass ensemble dedicated to classical music in the city of Cartagena de Indias in Colombia . Not that our ensemble considers itself very heroic, but this trait distinguishes the city where we are playing: Cartagena de Indias, also known as ?the heroic?, withstood several pirate and British Marine attacks back in its founding years around 1550. This is also about the time when most of the pieces we play were composed, but in Europe. The ensemble was started in early 2006 by our horn player Thomas Hürlimann. He had been searching for a brass group since 2004 to play baroque music in the tradition of the great Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, and could not find any existing group; therefore the only solution was to build a new ensemble especially for this type of music.Heroica Brass plays concerts with works for 4 to 8 brasswind musicians from composers of the renaissance, baroque or classical period. We play mostly in big churches because of the acoustic, but the ...

Digital Trumpet

Digital Trump et - video powered by MetacafeThis MIDI wind controller has been designed for trumpet players to make it as easy as possible to transition from the regular trumpet. The MDT has been in development for over 5 years to create an instrument that “feels right” when you first pick it up. Your hand position will be very similar to what you’re used to, the mouthpiece is a normal trumpet mouthpiece, the valves move in the same way, and the air “resistance” is familiar.Due to the much increased range and features that MIDI makes possible, there is a need for more controls than you find on your old trumpet. After many prototypes and much research we believe we have found the best way to incorporate these without making the MDT overly complex or “strange” to play.Although the MDT is completely electronic, its familiar feel will enable an acoustic trumpet player to learn it quickly and start playing with the least amount of change from their trumpet skills.

Carol Jantsch (USA)
2006-10-07 14:42:00
When The Philadelphia Orchestra opens its season in september, Carol Jantsch, 21, will be anchoring its brass section. She's the orchestra's youngest member and the first woman to hold a principal tuba chair in one of the nation's top orchestras.Rejected at first as too inexperienced, Jantsch beat out 194 other tubists to win the job last winter, when she was a senior at the University of Michigan. She was given an audition after an orchestra official heard a tape of her playing.Actually, it's fitting that Jantsch is so young because the tuba, invented in the 1830s, is the youngest of the brass instruments.Renee Montagne discusses the history of the tuba with music commentator Miles Hoffman."There are different sizes of tubas, but they all are basically just a big brass tube," Hoffman says. If you straightened one out, it could be up to 32 feet long. And they're as heavy as they look; most orchestral tubas weigh 25 to 35 pounds. Read more...More info about Carol Jantsch:Universi...

Harlequin Bras s was formed in early 1995 by a small group of top class musicians who wished to perform quality brass ensemble music in the North of England. The line up was based on the now famous combination of 4 Trumpets, 4 Trombones, Horn and Tuba made popular by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble in the 1970's and its successor, London Brass.A great deal of music has been written and arranged specifically for this combination of instruments by professional composers and arrangers such as Jim Parker (Soldier, Soldier / Ground Force), Roger Harvey, Eric Crees, Christopher Mowatt, John Iveson, Richard Bissell, Gordon Langford and Elgar Howarth. In addition, Harlequin Brass has been fortunate enough to have many works especially composed or arranged for it, resulting in a massive repertoire of music ranging from Baroque to Big Band, and everything in between!Harlequin Brass are now entering their second decade and have established themselves as the North of England's premier 10-piece ...

Corales French Horn Ensemble (Colombia)
2006-08-25 12:52:00
A golden gleam in the air, the pure powerful sound of the horn is as fascinating as the instrument looks. And it's even more powerful when four horns play together. "C.H.E. plays mostly as a quartet, nevertheless we decided to call ourselves an ensemble because we will play with up to 8 horns depending on the music's arrangement. "We" that is actually one player, one french horn and a Mac. So you may ask how can one horn player alone form an ensemble? And why does he do that alone? Does he play that badly that no one wants to play with him? In fact, there is no answer to the last question, as there are no other horn players on the Caribbean island where I live, which at least answers the second question. This "virtual" ensemble project came up when I was thinking about where to go as a horn player. Imagine me sitting on my island, all I have is my horn and my little Mac-recording studio. Of course this is an overdrawn image of my situation, but as a matter of fact I was not able to...

Finke Triple Horn
2006-08-11 19:24:03
Finke produces one of the lightest weight triple horns. The full triple only weights 2.7 kg with detachable bell. The well balanced horn allows it to be held in playing position over a long period without tiring. Apart from the mouthpiece receiver FINKE triple horns are the only ones with separate mouthpipes for the high and low horn sections. The intonation benefits from this design. Finke triple horns have a full tone, even in the low register. Thus professional musicians especially appreciate the high F section of their Finke horn. It has an astoundingly sonorous tone. Another feature of our outstanding design is the possibility to set the descant F section using a longer tuning slide into descant Eb.TAPER OPTIONSBRENDAN ? The Geyer-model, named after the Irish Saint who discovered the ?New World" in the 11th century, captures the richest integrity of tone in the fortissimo range without the harshness found in most Geyer copies. It is possible that players used to a far larger th...

Tim Posgate Hornband featuring Howard Johnson
2006-08-06 19:15:01
The Tim Posgate Hornband featuring Howard John son (on Guildwood Records.) John Kelman wrote: Tim Posgate is a Canadian guitarist who has demonstrated the kind of diverse idiosyncratic mindset in the past ten years that places him in the same musical vicinity as Bill Frisell. His latest release, Tim Posgate Hornband Featuring Howard Johnson , draws an even more visible link, with clear stylistic reference to Frisell?s mid-?90s quartet with trumpeter Ron Miles, trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, and violinist Eyvind Kang. Posgate?s group operates with a similar premise?steadfastly eschewing a more traditional rhythm section, but still managing to develop all the forward motion it needs, and creating a broader textural swath at the same time. But there are clear differences as well. Read the complete Article... Title: Tim Posgate Hornband featuring Howard JohnsonBand : Tim Posgate HornbandRelease Date: 20051. Hale Bopp 2.
