2007-03-08 02:10:08 If you've ever listened to NPR, then you know that Terry Gross is probably the best interviewer today. While "Fresh Air" is featured on practically every NPR station in the country (for good reason), the podcast up till now has been a prohibitively expensive Audible download. The good news? The show is now podcasting for free. Subscribe through iTunes (link below) or through the Fresh Air homepage. Some classic interviews:[Thom Yorke][Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian][Ricky Gervais, promoting "Extras"][Wes Anderson, promoting "The Royal Tenenbaums"] More About: Pod , Podcasting , Free , Podcast , Cast

Dead Flowers Interviews Matt from Foreign Born
2007-03-07 02:09:01 Matt Popieluch is the lead singer in Foreign Born, one of Los Angeles' very best bands. In the group, he's complimented by Ariel Rechtshaid's melodic bass playing, Lewis Pesacov's distinctive effects-laden guitar, and Garrett Ray's innovative drumming. They have had one proper release, the "In the Remote Woods" EP on Startime, and have had their debut LP "On the Wing Now" available to buy at shows for the past few months.I got in contact with Matt because "On the Wing Now" is the best LP I've heard in years, an unusually confident mix of rock influences that never retreats into nostalgia. While "In the Remote Woods" showed promise, "On the Wing Now" realizes the band's potential on songs like "In the Shape" and "Letter of Inclusion".Matt also performs solo under the moniker Big Search. Big Search's debut "Mysticism vs Classicism" was released in 2003. Dead Flowers : As I understand it, you recorded "On the Wing Now" without label support, and then shopped it around. Can... Brian Jonestown Massacre: Ballad of Jim Jones
(Classic MP3) 2007-03-03 14:06:03 Lyrics: I walked from New York and back from L.A. I lived on a mountain and once by the bay I bought an apartment and slept in the hay but there's no place that's softer than (your arms) living today is just getting so bad there's a look on your face and it says"you've been had!" you can take all my money but don't make me mad cause there's nobody meaner than (me) I prayed to Buddha, to Allah, More About: Jim Jones , Classic , Jones , Massacre , Town

Liam Meets Nelly
2007-03-01 20:04:09 You know, you just can't beat Liam when it comes to a good Coldplay quote: Nelly Furtado was left hot and bothered after hooking up with her idols Oasis backstage at last Wednesday's (February 14) Brit Awards. The singer, who revealed she used to write the Gallagher brother letters when she was a teen such was her love, said being at the same bash as them was surreal. ?I was watching the show
Things That Suck #62: The Press Response to Lily Allen
2007-03-01 20:04:09 To hear otherwise respectable critics describe her, you would think Lily Allen were the second coming of rock, pop, you name it. Truth is, the pudgy singer got where she is thanks more to nepotism than dues paid, and there's nothing rock n' roll about that. While we're on the topic, let's mention that it's impossible to have a true grassroots, word-of-mouth campaign on the internet/myspace More About: Press , Hat , Things
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
2007-03-01 02:02:01 Recently Pitchfork pompously declared, as is their wont, that hearing the Arcade Fire for the first time was like discovering a new musical language. If that's the case, then discovering God speed You! Black Emperor is like discovering a new musical planet. Like many others, I first heard of GYBE through Radiohead. Between OK Computer and Kid A, there was a strange internet rumor that GYBE More About: Speed , Lack

Thoughts on Swervedriver's Mezcal Head 2007-02-28 14:01:05 (Originally posted on Glamorama, 2.12.2004) A tidal wave is brewing somewhere off the east coast of America. We're talking the kind of thing that would get Patrick Swayze all excited and have Keanu Reeves chasing after him and robbing banks in a Nixon mask. That tidal wave is nostalgia. Nostalgia for thirteen years ago to be exact. 80s revivalism is dead. If another Echo and The Bunnymen clone More About: Drive , Thoughts , Driver , River , Thought

Interview with Jez from Swervedriver 2007-02-28 14:01:05 (Originally posted on Glamorama in 2004) Last month, as part of the Glamorama Classics series, I did a piece on Swervedriver's LP "Mezcal Head". Much to my surprise, Swervedriver's drummer Jez got in touch to say how much he appreciated the feature. It was a great honor, to say the least. But even more surprising was that Jez agreed to sit down with me during my recent visit to London, in order More About: Inter , Drive , Interview , Driver , With

Hurricane #1
2007-02-28 14:01:05 Hurricane #1 was the group started by Andy Bell when Ride folded. In many ways, the group epitomized one aspect of Creation's slow decline in the 90s: they wanted to be like Oasis a little too much. Watch any of their videos (such as the excruciating "Chain Reaction") and you'll see singer Alex Lowe strutting around like a Liam impersonator. Lowe, a former boxer, even went so far as to More About: Cane , Hurricane
Ride
2007-02-28 14:01:05 Creation band Ride was one of the real driving forces behind the shoegazing movement in the UK. They had a minor hit in the US as well, "Vapour Trail" off their debut LP "Nowhere". You might have heard it on your local alternative station at 3 in the morning. In retrospect, it's hard to say that Ride were a great band. They had some memorable moments, but there are a lot of songs on their
Dead Flowers Interviews Pete from Adorable
2007-02-28 14:01:05 Pete (Piotr) Fijalkowski was the lead singer of the Creation Records band Adorable in the early 90's. Their first single, "Sunshine Smile", was NME's single of the week in May 1992. They went on to record the phenomenal debut record "Against Perfection", which unfortunately failed to live up to the success of their debut single. Another record, "Fake", followed in 1994, but testy relationships More About: Views , Flowers , Interviews , Inter , Interview

Thoughts on:
"Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman" by Haruki Murakami 2007-02-28 14:01:05 Murakami is remarkably consistent: his writing seldom if ever slips below the readable mark. Many of the stories here rank up with his best work. "The Rise and Fall of Sharpie Cakes" is a humorous and frightening Kafka-esque tale of psychotic crows and their control of a dessert company, the sort of story that only Murakami can dream up. The story that gave the collection its name, meanwhile, More About: Sleeping , Thoughts , Thought , Woman , Oman
