SS Great Britain
2007-09-23 00:00:00
The day after I got back from Tribe of Doris my newphew arrived for a visit till today. He lives in Brisbane and is Ozzie born and bred. He's a lovely young man and we had a great weekend - he went off today to my dad's for a few days. I took him to a few places round Bristol including a gig where I played a song and to the famous SS Great Britain which was the first ever steel hulled steam ship and was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (the same guy who designed the Clifton Suspension Bridge and many other engineering wonders). This is a picture of one of the masts reflected in a mirror on the deck! Moored next to the Great Britain is The Matthew a replica of the ship which took John Cabot to the Americas from Bristol. Tribe of Doris

Well my nephew's taking a nap so I thought I'd grab a few minutes to post something up at last about Tribe of Doris which I've just returned from. Basically, it's not so much a festival as an inter-cultural summer school. World class teachers come and run daily workshops on a miriad of amazing things from Tai-chi, different forms of dance and drumming, middle Eastern melody, capoeira, unusual instruments like the bolon, gum boot dancing - you name it!! Roger playing Bolon I did intermediate djembe, middle eastern melody with my flute - which was really fascinating and my favourite - the sabar drum with my dear teacher Modou Diouf. Last weekend before Doris I had a crowd of 17 for a sabar workshop here in Bristol including a Gambian guy who runs a radio station in The Gambia who's going to play my songs on Gambian radio - exciting!! Pa Modou interviewing Alphonse In the evenings at Doris, each night there's a themed party like West African dance party, Latin night, mi...

2007-09-23 00:00:00
I've just has an amazing weekend organising and hosting the sabar weekend with Modou Diouf. It went really well and 17 people turned up on Saturday and we had a marvellous time. Tomorrow I'm off in Moon Palace to the Tribe of Doris summer school for a week (dance, drumming, singing etc in a field with about 1,000 other drummy people!) I'll take the camera and take lots of pictures and come and see all your blogs when I get back. Lots of love for now! :D
It's Over So Quick (It's really obscene)
2007-09-23 00:00:00
I've put up It's Over So Quick on Myspace just so you know how the tune goes with the words I posted the other day. www.myspace.com/chandramoonsmusic I wrote this song during one night when a particular rhythm I'd learned that day at drumming kept plaguing my dreams. I woke up several times in the night with short phrases attached to the beats and I just had to get up and scribble things down. When I woke in the morning I took all the phrases and re-jigged them and hey presto - a song. I wrote the whole tune on a drum and it was this song that made me realise I had to teach myself the guitar as you can't play tunes on a drum ha ha!! The whole tune just came into my head in one go which was pretty amazing really. The drum kit part was developed by Barrie (Rhymester) when we were still going out together and Richard (producer) has done all the programming. The finished version needs quite a lot more work but thought you'd like to hear the developing piece! This weekend I'm...

Bar Code for Full Circle
2007-09-23 00:00:00
This is the bar code that will be printed on the back of my album Full Circle when it comes out later in the year. It's the unique code that will enable people to be able to buy it online wherever they live. OOOOO it makes me feel like it REALLY WILL HAPPEN!!! I constantly have to fight my inner demons that says it's all crap, that I'm not good enough, that I'm too old, blah blah and each little step towards the goal make me believe I'm really doing this. It must be the same feeling if you want to write a book or a play, or paint a picture and part of you just insists on getting in the way - well I keep telling myself to keep out of my way and let the songs get out despite myself and then whatever happens happens - I don't mind - at least I will have believed in them. Phew!
