Scissor Sisters - Filty/Gorgeous (Atoc vs. Superbuddha Remix)

A great new remix from a great new album. Scissor Sister s are amazing without being remixed, but this Atoc (A Touch of Class) version puts a good rock/punk spin on it that I think you'll enjoy. If you love Filthy/Gorge ous, you'll love this version as well. Check out A Touch of Class' Still Sucks album for more remixes like this. The Gossip - Listen Up

This is actually an older song, off of the The Gossip 's album Standing In the Way of Control that was released in 2005. I first heard of this group because of the new wave of eletro/punk/house remixes that seem to be the new "it" genre. I've been digging the electo house sound for awhile and am really excited to hear the dance-punk sound. This song is just the original version, which was really good to hear too because it makes you appreciate the remixes when they sound like an actual remix, not just a dance loop in the background. Sunday Spotlight: Aqualung

I first fell in love with the music of Matt Hales after hearing "Gentle" off of his British debut Aqualung . I was hoping this wasn't just a random good song. Then I stumbled upon "Brighter Than Sunshine" off of his US debut Strange and Beautiful. That song was a bit more pop than I expected, but I still wanted to hear more. To my surprise, everything else off the album was even better. The vocals relay raw emotion and the composition of the songs was original. The one thing I can truly appreciate is that fact that you can listen to his album the whole way through and never skip over a song. It's very respectable to find an artist who still makes music not for the money, but for every reason music should be made. Aqualung quickly became one of my favorite artists and Strange and Beautiful was one of the best albums released in 2005. Aqualung has had three previous albums, including the S&B compilation. Kashmir - The Cynic

Jon McLaughlin - Industry

I know very little about this guy. This song is pretty light, piano heavy, with sort of a pop rock style. I don't think that he has a full album yet. He has 4 songs on iTunes on the "Industry " EP and he did release an earlier EP with about 7 songs on it. I haven't heard anything else from him, but thought he was worth a mention. For anyone who has heard an Air album, you're probably just as excited as I am about their new release. The French duo's fourth album, Pocket Symphony , is another creative masterpiece of unconventional style and sound. I think the album is best described from their myspace page. If you want to hear an album that is smooth and sensual, that reminds you why you love hot summer nights, that makes you want to dance on rooftops, smoke a cigar, drink a mojito, lose your inhibitions, and make you feel like there's not a care in the world, then All Good Things is the album for you. This song is pretty addictive if you get into it. K-Os has a hip-hop/rock style with a hint of reggae, funk, and soul thrown in. "Sunday Morning " is off his third album, Atlantis: Hymns for Disco. I haven't heard all the songs, but from what I've read, it's supposed to be a great album. He is currently on tour and you can also download "The Rain" for free on iTunes. The Fratellis - Baby Fratelli

I don't too much about the Fratellis except that they are a new band from the UK. I believe that their music has actually been out for awhile as singles, but their album, Costello Music, only came out a few months ago in Europe and is soon to be released in the states. Their music has resemblance to the high energy of Franz Ferdinand, but with a much different vocal sound. The songs are great rock songs that make you want to get up and go crazy. Sunday Spotlight: TRAVIS

Travis is not your typical UK rock band. While many other bands have changed their sound to the sounds of the times, Travis has stuck with the same sound that made them popular. Travis had huge success in the UK, but have not reached worldwide fame that they were once believed to be destined to. Once compared to Oasis, who is one of the largest and most well-known bands ever in the world, Travis was unable to rocket to huge commercial success. However, they do have a huge following. Travis uses their music and lyrics to express some of their political and social views. The Boy With No Name is their fifth studio album, but does not come out for a couple of months so its hard to get a full listen. I believe that Closer will be their first single and you can take a listen for yourself. Gym Class Heroes - The Queen and I

This is one of my favorite songs off As Cruel As School Children. Gym Class Hero es are currently riding the fame wave as "Cupid's Chokehold" (originally released in 2005 off the Papercut Chronicles) is gaining airplay and moving up the charts. GCH have an urban hip hop style and use live instrumentals instead of just beats, which give them a modern rock edge as well. This is definitely a band to look out for. I was hoping to start a Sunday Spotlight of an artist who you may not have heard of and will be coming out with a new album in the near future. I'm a few days behind, but thought it could still be a good idea. Below, I have included some of my favorite tracks.I first heard (Leslie) Feist on her rendition of Broken Social Scene's "Lover's Spit" while watching the indie film "Lie With Me." I knew I would have to find out who she was and see if I could hear more. Feist has two previous studio albums, Monarch (Lay Your Jewelled Head Down and Let It Die, and a remixes album, Open Season, including remixes by K-Os and the Postal Service. She has contributed her sound to Broken Social Scene, Peaches, Gonzales, Kings of Convenience and the New Deal, throughout her career. Shiny Toy Guns - Don't Cry Out

The first song I heard from this group was "Le Disko," and I was immediately hooked. Hailing from L.A., Shin y Toy Guns ' songs are very catchy with an 80s synth-pop/punk electro sound. "Don't Cry Out" has an addictive beat with both male and female vocals. Unfortunately, their US tour has ended and they are doing a very extensive tour in Europe. Some of their songs sound a bit overproduced so I will welcome a more raw second album. For now, I am defintely enjoying their sound. Kaiser Chiefs - Ruby

The Kaiser Chief s are quickly becoming one of the UK's top rock bands, as well as much of Europe and throughout the world. "Ruby " is the first single of their much anticipated sophomore album, Yours Truly, Angy Mob. "Ruby" follows in tradition with their first album, Employment, as an upbeat indie style rock track. If you can't tell by some of my previous posts, I am a huge Brit music fan. As you will be able to tell, the Brit Award s are not like American awards shows. It's a party, there are tons of fans who go crazy for every live performance, there are tons of musicians, they'll spray alcohol all over the winners; it's how I feel music should be appreciated. Just watch a live performance of any artist in Europe and then compared to a US performance, the atmosphere is completely different. Enough of that. Bird Flu, another infectious tune from the Sri-Lankan Londoner who already gave us Galang, Bucky Done Gun, Lady Killa, in fact her whole first album, Arular, was of rare creative genius. Me and Mr. Jones is just one of the many hits off this Brit's second Album, Back to Black. The modern soulful voice, with the mature lyrics and hype beats create an original sound that is really uncomparable to any modern American chanteuse. Wine house is nominated for 2 Brit Awards including: Best British Solo Artisit and Best British Album. The Brit Awards take place on 13 February 07. Sort of a new sound, Disc o tech is an indie/dance/rock infusion. Dan Keyes, front runner of the band, lends his vocals to this up and coming track. Discotech is slowly gaining popularity through the New York nightlife and is sure to hit other areas soon. Nas ft. Chrisette Michele - Can't Forget About You

Not normally a fan of rap songs sampled from earlier classics, "Can't Forget About You" renews my faith in mash-up creativity and in hip hop music itself. Using Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable," Nas criticizes the current industry and reminisces over past events and people when hip hop was, to him, genuine. Chris ette Mich ele's voice has an arguably contemporary resemblance to an Ella Fitzgerald-sound, which reinforces the song's nostalgia. The video continues his ode to older times and to New York. Oddly enough, some scenes featuring New York in the background are very similar to his "If I Ruled the World" video with Lauryn Hill. I think the controvery around his album may help rap/hip hop artists examine where the industry is and where it was. Evermore - Light Surrounding You

Not a new song, but perhaps one you haven't heard before. These indie pop rockers from New Zealand don't necessarily have a new sound, but do have some solid songs that you may miss out on as it seems this CD hasn't had a US release. "Light Surround ing You" is a typical song, but still good and uplifting, depending on interpretation. It may be a little too the O.C. for some, but its still worth a listen. For a more upbeat song try "It's Too Late (Dirty South Remix)" from their first album, Dreams, and for a lighter one try "Running." Unfortunately, without a US release, the album is much pricier on Amazon and this song is not even available on iTunes. This may end up just being another music blog, but I figure I'd give my love for music an outlet to share to others who have the same musical interests as myself.
