A Poem by Langston Hughes
2009-06-07 23:00:00
Droning a drowsy syncopated tune,Rocking back and forth to a mellow croon,I heard a Negro play.Down on Lenox Avenue the other nightBy the pale dull pallor of an old gas lightHe did a lazy sway ....He did a lazy sway ....To the tune o' those Weary Blues. With his ebony hands on each ivory keyHe made that poor piano moan with melody.O Blues!Swaying to and fro on his rickety stoolHe played that sad raggy tune like a musical fool.Sweet Blues!Coming from a black man's soul.O Blues! In a deep song voice with a melancholy toneI heard that Negro sing, that old piano moan--"Ain't got nobody in all this world,Ain't got nobody but ma self.I's gwine to quit ma frownin'And put ma troubles on the shelf."Thump, thump, thump, went his foot on the floor. He played a few chords then he sang some more--"I got the Weary BluesAnd I can't be satisfied.Got the Weary BluesAnd can't be satisfied--I ain't happy no mo'And I wish that I had died."And far into the night he crooned that tune. The stars wen...

I Feel Like Going To Church - Rev. Gary Davis - Children Of Zion
2009-06-07 09:01:00
I love Rev. Gary Davis guitar playing. He was a true master and I love how he handles the twelve string in this video clip from Pete Seeger's show Rainbow Quest. I also enjoy his voice, when he does that shout, "tell me which way are you going."And when Pete Seeger joins in, man they tear it up. I feel like shouting, Amen.Rev. The Downchild Blues Band
2009-06-06 23:38:00
The Downchild Blues Band was formed in 1969 by Don Walsh and his brother Hock. Since the beginning, they have been a very, very good band. Over the years, there have been many personnel changes including a number of vocalists, but Don Walsh has been Mr. Downchild to us Torontonians throughout. Blues fans will know the name Downchild also from a Sonny Boy Williamson tune, Mr. Downchild. The Walsh brothers are also said to have been the inspiration for The Blues Brothers. Here's the band with Calidonia. I think that may be the late Tony Flaim on vocals. Here's a brief clip of Dan Ackroid performing with Donnie Walsh. I've Got Everything I Need...almostI remember grooving to the Downchild recording of Flip Flop Fly back when I was in high school and dinosaurs were roaming the earth. Here are the boys playing it a couple years ago.I was hoping to find some video featuring the late Jane Vasey who was Downchild's fantastic boogie pianist. Ms. Vasey died several years ago, I believe fr...

Hey Joe!

Roy Buchanan?s musical career started in California, he came from humble beginnings - his father was a sharecropper. Buchanan told how his first musical memories were of racially-mixed revival meetings his family would attend. ?Gospel,? he recalled, ?that?s how I first got into black music?. He in fact drew upon many disparate influences while learning to play his instrument (although he later claimed his aptitude was derived from being ?half-wolf?).This comes from a review that sums up my feelings about himThis blues guitarist so expertly wrenched notes from his guitar that it sent shivers up my spine. Using a volume knob technique to create an almost violin like effect along with typical blues guitar techniques, and a whole lot of emotion, Mr. Roy Buchanan took the song I had only known because of Hendrix and created a slow blues, absolutely heart wrenching version unlike anything I had ever heard. It was raw, real and authentic that I was immediately blown away. I watched every v...

New Release - Buddy Guy - Snakebite
2009-06-06 09:01:00
Production Notes @Amazon.com2009 two CD release. Cobra Records was founded in 1956 by Eli Toscano, a record shop owner in Chicago. He sensibly left all the creative decisions to his in-house producer and writer Willie Dixon, who had just left Chess Records. Dixon then signed the three best second generation performers of Chicago Blues: Buddy Guy, Otis Rush and Magic Sam. He wrote them some great songs and encouraged them to develop the single note guitar leads that distinguished their style. Snakebiteclick image for infoDisc: 1 1. OTIS RUSH - I Can't Quit You Baby 2. A couple of random blues clips.
2009-06-05 02:35:00
Often times during the day online friends send me videos, that are just awesome. There have been some who complain that we post too much YouTube, but one of the reasons that we do that is that we are a filter. I'd like to think that I and my fellow contributors (Ron and Mister Anchovy) are finding some of the best blues music videos that are out there. Consider these two.I really enjoy this clip titled Slide Guitar - Slow blues in E. I've been planing on starting a new series on guitar tutorials but just can't find the time to pull it all together. More like this to come. And then there is this delightful clip of Taj Mahal doing Honky Tonk Women. It is just too cool, and I hope you like it as much as I do. This was sent to my via Fitzgerald @blip.fm by my online friend Ledvolta of Mitch's Cave fame. If you get a chance stop by and tell Mitch that I sent you.

Spotlight on the blues: BB King - Blues On The Bayou
2009-06-04 09:01:00
B.B. King plays a kind of universal blues, an eveyman's blues. I know a lot of people who claim that they do not like blues music, but they like B.B. King. This makes me laugh and kind of proves my point. It really comes down to being able to tap your foot and getting into the grove. Blues on the Bayou is a laid back, tap your foot, get into the groove kind of album. It easly puts you in the mood, and many who have heard it love it.When he made this album Mr. King said this was a "back to basics jam ... with my conviction that this current band is my best ever." I think he hit it on the head. Blues On The Bayouclick image for info @Amazon.comTrack Listing1. Blues Boys Tune 3:29 2. Bad Case Of Love 5:28 3. I'll Survive 4:52 4. Mean Ole' World 4:30 5. It's The Birthday of Memphis Minnie
2009-06-03 20:08:00
Queen of Country Blues 1929-1937Memphis Minnie was born on June 3, 1897 in Algiers, Louisiana, and she died August 6, 1973 in Memphis, Tennessee. She was an American Blues guitarist, vocalist, and composer of considerable talent. I don't think I can recommend a blues musician more favorably! I find her music and her life story fascinating, like many females coming up in the blues world she is often over looked.According to Wikipedia;Born Lizzie Douglas in Algiers, Louisiana, Minnie was one of the most influential and pioneering female blues musicians and guitarists of all time. She recorded for forty years, almost unheard of for any woman in show business at the time and possibly unique among female blues artists. A flamboyant character who wore bracelets made of silver dollars, she was the biggest female blues singer from the early Depression years through World War II. One of the first blues artists to take up the electric guitar, in 1942, she combined her Louisiana-country roo...

It's The Birthday of Jimmy Rogers
2009-06-03 19:22:00
Jimmy Rogers was born on June 3, 1924 and he passed away on December 19, 1997. He was a blues singer, guitarist and harmonica player, who was best known as a member of Muddy Waters' band.According to Wikipedia;Jimmy Rogers was born James A. Lane in Ruleville, Mississippi, on June 3, 1924, and was raised in Atlanta, Georgia and Memphis, Tennessee. He adapted the professional surname 'Rogers' from his stepfather's last name. Rogers learned the harmonica alongside his childhood friend Snooky Pryor, and as a teenager took up the guitar and played professionally in East St. Louis, Illinois (where he played with Robert Lockwood, Jr., among others), before moving to Chicago in the mid 1940s.[citation needed] By 1946 he had recorded his first record as a harmonica player and singer for the local Harlem record label (not to be confused with the New York based label of the same name), although his name was not including on the label ? the record was issued under the names 'Memphis Slim a...

New Release - George Harmonica Smith - Now You Can Talk About Me
2009-06-03 09:01:00
Now You Can Talk About MeAccording to Lars Gandil; There's more than a few California harp players who grew up under the influence of the man who was truly the king of West Coast blues harmonica. To be sure, George "Harmonica " Smith outshone even the great Little Walter when it came to blowing chromatic harp. Sadly under-recorded and under-appreciated, Smith deserves recognition as one of the greats. This release goes a long way in rectifying that situation. Of the fourteen offerings, five are extremely rare 60s reissues, including a real rocker called "Tight Dress" and a rather haughty little number titled "Blowing the Blues." The remainders were produced by harmonica virtuoso Rod Piazza. In the mix are powerhouse blues pieces like "Goin' Down Slow" and the previously unissued "Last Chance." Top these with such unexpected gems as "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" and "Peg O' My Heart" and what you have is pure harmonica heaven.Track Listing1. Blowing the Blues 2. Yes, Baby 3...

Bob Dylan and the blues
2009-06-03 00:18:00
I almost changed my mind about making this post because so much has been written about Bob Dylan over the years. As a kid, I was aware that he was the guy who recorded Like a Rolling Stone and that was about it until I was maybe 15, when I heard Blood on the Tracks, Desire and Hard Rain more of less all at once. At that time, I was a teen-age blues freak and when I listened to Dylan (I didn't know he was supposed to be a poet who can't sing very well) I thought he attacked a song with much the same spirit and sometimes with a similar approach to some of the blues players I was listening too. I really liked that and so started to listen to more and more of his music. To this day, I don't think he was kidding when he described himself as just a song and dance man. Here's Meet me in the Morning, from Blood on the Tracks. I love the lazy groove in this tune. I think it might be the first blues by Bob Dylan I heard.Bob Dylan has returned to blues in one form or another throughout his...

Mr. 5X5
2009-06-02 00:14:00
Jimmy Rushing, known as Mr. 5X5 was the first blues singer I had any serious exposure too. My dad loved his singing, with the Basie band but especially he loved a later recording called Mr. 5X5, produced by the legendary Colombia Records talent man, John Hammond (yes, his son is John Hammond the bluesman). Rushing lived from 1901 to 1972. He sang with the Basie band from 1935 to 1948. Here's Take me Back Baby.... Mr. Rushing was what you might call a blues shouter, a Kansas City style jump blues specialist. Naturally I hated his music. After all, it was my father's music and what did he know? Here he is solo, playing piano and singing Good Morning Blues, from 1962...This next piece features Benny Goodman on clarinet with Jimmy Rushing on vocals. On the recording Mr. 5X5 there is a cut where they play together, which I believe is called Brussels World's Fair Blues. I wish I had that one for you because man does it rock. Rushing sings, we're gonna rock this joint, we're gonna smoke...
