Blues Song In The Sport Light: Ain't No More Cane
2009-04-25 18:02:00
I remember the first time I heard the prison work song Ain't No More Cane it was one of those moments when blues music caused me great sadness. I don't normally associate blues music with sadness, but this song takes me there. It might have been Leadbelly's delevery, but I thought about all those men who died working on prison work gangs.Over the years there have been a few more upbeat treatments of the song, and some have really made it rock. Check these out; Ain't no more cane on the Brazos(1)Oh, oh, oh, oh...Its all been ground down to molassesOh, oh- oh, oh- oh...You shoulda been on the river in 1910They were driving the women just like they drove the men.Go down Old Hannah,(2) don'cha rise no moreDon't you rise up til Judgment Day's for sureAin't no more cane on the BrazosIts all been ground down to molassesCaptain(3), don't you do me like you done poor old ShineWell ya drove that bully(4) til he went stone blindWake up on a lifetime(5), hold up your own headWell y...

Kindness - Virtue
2009-04-22 11:41:00
So I guess I am one of those guys who likes lists, mathematics is my background. Being a relative newcomer to Blues it helps me as a focus for research and learning. However any suggestions that are more appropriate I'll include. So off with vices and virtues in no particular order and with some very spurious relationship to the topic. However I enjoy the music and that is the main thing? It's fun anyway.Eric Clapton - Kind Hearted Woman Bluesa cover of the famous Robert Johnson songI got a kindhearted woman, do anything in this world for meI got a kindhearted woman, do anything in this world for meBut these evilhearted women, man, they will not let me beI love my baby, my baby don't love meI love my baby oooh, my baby don't love meI really love that woman, can't stand to leave her beEric Clapton - Kind hearted woman bluesUploaded by bebepandaRobert Cray - My Last Regretperhaps jazzy but an excellent performer. The Old Grey Whistle Test was shown on the BBC from 1971 to the late 1980's. I remember Whispering Bob Harris and luscious Anne Nightingale. This had cult status - an attempt at serious critique.Dr Feelgood is slang for heroin or doctors who over prescribe drugs (originally the moniker of Piano Red). They are still going strong and rock - definitely R&B with a very bluesy feel. They were famous for their high octane live performances. Unfortunately I never got to see them so I have to enjoy my pleasures vicariously like this.I spent too many air-guitar moments imitating this guy."an electrifying guitarist and singer whose music blurred the boundaries between folk, jazz, rock and blues"

Music blog in the spotlight: Indieblogheaven
2009-04-20 09:01:00
I usually reserve the spotlight for blogs that are all about the blues music. But then again, I like to break my own rules everynow and then. And what better way to do that then to introduce you to one of my favorite music blogs, Indieblogheaven. Their tag line pretty much sums it up, "Music for people with taste."According to them, they are;... a music blog, primarily focusing on indie bands/artists. This may include some americana, pop, punk, or whatever we might like at the time. There might be some pop culture sprinkled in periodically. What I like about them the most is that they are consistant. You can count on these guys to deliver good new indie bands day in and day out. They have been doing this for years now.I remember the day I realized that they had linked to my blog, it was cool because then I realized that I was included in that group of "music for people with taste."

2009-04-16 09:01:00
The Ballad of John Henry click image for info @Amazon.comAll I ever hear are good things about Joe Bonamassa. He seems to be on everybodys list of favorite blues guitarist. Mine included. I caught an earful when I did not include him on my best all time blues guitartist list. But that list changes from day to day, depends on my mood, but he makes it most days. This is the seventh studio album from Mr. Bonamassa. It was produced by Kevin Shirley of Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, The Black Crowes fame. And again Bonamassa delivers another collection of rocking Blues songs. There are six original tracks penned by Bonamassa himself on this album. 2009-04-15 09:01:00
Blue AgainI think that it is so cool that Mick Fleetwood has come back to the blues. I say welcome home.According to notes at Amazon.com;Revisiting the blues and the blues-oriented classic songs of Fleetwood Mac, iconic rock drummer and band co-founder Mick Fleetwood has assembled a hand-picked quartet of musicians, The Mick Fleetwood Blues Band , who've created this stunning new live recording. Equal parts blues rave-up and loving homage to the early incarnation of Fleetwood Mac, BLUE AGAIN is a showcase for Fleetwood, who has teamed up on this recording with guitarist and lead vocalist Rick Vito, bassist Lenny Castellanos and keyboardist Mark Johnstone. This powerhouse blues project features versions of early Peter Green-penned hits such as 'Black Magic Woman,' 'Albatross' and 'Rattlesnake Shake' as well as original material composed by Rick Vito (with a rollicking version of Elmore James' 'Shake Your Moneymaker' included for good measure). Sound Boxes - Blues Music Hardware
2009-04-14 09:01:00
I personally like to listen to my music through speakers, as opposed to earphones. I contrast this with how my daughter (a twenty something person) listens to her music. She is more of a headphone / earphone person. I think we both use our laptops to listen to music more now then we had in the past. My daughter and some other young people that I know actual use their cell phones to listen to music. I find the sound quality of most phones to be too low, to really enjoy music this way. Maybe it is just me.I am still a radio listener both in the car and at home. I also sometimes listen to radio stations using our cable TV and on the computer. I'll just put the TV on the blues radio station or tune into one of my favorite blues blogs and listen to music that way.I purchased a set of speakers for my laptop just so I could listen to music with the computer. And it seems to work out well.I was just thinking about this and wondered about how my readers here at SML liked to listen to music....

It's the Birthday of Hound Dog Taylor
2009-04-12 10:17:00
Release the Hound Theodore Roosevelt "Hound Dog" Taylor was born on April 12, 1915 and he passed away on December 17, 1975. There are a lot of dogs going around barking, but one of the truly big dogs was Hound Dog Taylor. And yes he was named after the president! As often seen in blues history the real bluesmen not only play the blues but they live the blues. And if anybody lived the blues, the Hound Dog did. Here is also an example of a bluesman who was truly a joyous soul. You know he was having fun as he played. And some of his lyrics can make you laugh out loud or at least chuckle. Just listen to "Give Me Back My Wig" if you want to laugh. He was a member of Sonny Boy William's II (Rice Miller) Biscuit Time radio broadcasts out of Helena, AR, before coming to Chicago in 1942. He learned to play a guitar at the age of 20, so I guess there is some hope for us late bloomers. Not the best guitar player or smoothest vocalist, he is reported to have said, "When I die, they'll say...

Maxwell Street in The Blues Brothers
2009-04-11 09:01:00
Someone recently asked, "What is your favorite song from the movie The Blues Brothers ."I said that my favorite song was John Lee Hooker doing Boom Boom on Maxwell Street . I especially enjoy the ending scene when John Lee is saying that he wrote the song, and a man jumps up and says, naw you didn't. That cracks me up.According to wikipedia;Maxwell Street was featured in the 1980 film, The Blues Brothers, in which it was portrayed as a thriving ethnically African-American community. The scene features the two stars, "'Joliet' Jake" and "Elwood Blues" - played by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd - looking for "Matt 'Guitar' Murphy" and "Lou 'Blue Lou' Marini," to get their band back together. They enter the, "Soul Food Cafe," the exterior of which is actually Nate's Deli, formerly Lyon's Deli (the interior is a set). As they are entering, John Lee Hooker is playing, "Boom Boom," on the street, and some typical street scenes can be seen, including the famous, "Cheat You Fair" sig...

John Mayall has been prominent on the music scene for 50 years and promoted the blues in the UK for that long - he served in Korea for 3 years! In the sixties he formed the Bluesbreakers and played at the Marquee. They backed John Lee Hookers first UK tour in 1964. In 1965 a certain Eric Clapton joined the lineup - thats when I got interested (I was only 11 then!). The Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton was released in 1965.I was a little older and more influenced by thisClapton left to form Cream and was replaced by Peter Green (who left to form Fleetwood Mac after a short stay). In the 70's John had relocated to the States - working with Albert King and producing Jazz Fusion Blues in 1971.Albert King & John Mayall 'Call It Stormy Monday'In 1984 Mayall restored the name Bluesbreakers for a lineup comprising the two lead guitars of Walter Trout and Coco Montoya, bassist Bobby Haynes and drummer Joe Yuele.I notice he is appearing on June the 14th with BB King in Manchester - I'...

Blues Harmonica Questions and Harmonica Tutorials
2009-04-09 09:01:00
What I really want to talk about today is harmonica playing, and where you can find answers to questions that you may have, and where you can view some great Harmonica Tutorials .I have mentioned many times, and probably will again that I play blues harmonica for my own entertainment mostly, but every now and then for friends and family too. And I have also mentioned that I answer questions over at Yahoo answers. Well many of the questions about blues harmonica come up over and over. And I thought, hey, I could do a blog post on those questions. And when people ask, I can just point them to this blog post.People want to know what harmonica to get? Where to buy harmonicas? How to hold a harmonica after you get it? How to play a single note? How to bend notes? Where the can find books, CDs, DVDs and other training material about blues harmonica? etc, etc and etc.I have answered these and many other questions about blues harmonica so many times, that I am tired of answering them.
