Thoughts on the Smashing Pumpkins Suing Virgin and the Changing Music Indus
2008-03-27 06:01:00
It seems that the turbulent end of the music industry (as we know it) is coming closer and closer. I mentioned in a previous post how the Smashing Pumpkins were supposedly going independent after breaking from all label contracts, and now it seems that a break from their label is not enough as they are also suing Virgin Records for breach of contract about using their music in unapproved contexts. The debate is over a Pepsi commercial I believe, although I haven’t seen it, but really stems from what appears to be a long time relationship of poor treatment of the Pumpkins at the hands of Virgin. I read a great interview with Billy Corgan on just this subject and the music industry as a whole over at Rolling Stone and it sparked some of my own thoughts on the matter. You can check out that article here: http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/19 801847/corgans_fury_exclusive_qa I won’t go into details about what Billy says as you all can read it for yourselves so why reh...

Happy Easter from the Soul of Rock and Roll
2008-03-23 06:01:00
I’m not an overly religious person, but I thought I’d take the time to wish the Christian readers out there a happy Easter holiday. I don’t know about the rest of you, but every religious holiday I feel a slight urge to listen to a little of the quality religious flavored rock and roll out ...

New Raconteurs Album Coming Sooner than Expected
2008-03-22 06:01:00
There are some albums that I own that I just seem to like too much… so much that I actually restrain myself from listening to them. I know this sounds a little absurd, but it’s true. Certain albums just strike such a chord with me that when they are over, I want ...

Neil Young Sees Plenty of Protest Songs to Check Out Online: They Are the S
2008-03-19 06:01:00
Although one of the qualities of a good song is a feeling of being timeless, many of the best songs ever written were written in response to specific events and might even be referred to as ?protest songs.? Music seems to go along with protesting very well because of its emotional charge, wide ...

The Raw Intensity of Sonic Youth Live
2008-03-16 07:01:00
I thought it was about time to revisit a band that continues to worm it’s way back into my mind every few months from first really becoming part of my collection not that long ago. Sonic Youth may not be a band for everyone with their complex, screeching noise rock fueled compositions. ...

Thoughts on the New Album from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
2008-03-09 07:01:00
New albums don’t always register on my musical radar. I think it’s heavily dependent on what I’m listening to at the time it’s released. I mean, if I’m listening to a band right around the time their new music comes out, then I’m all into it immediately, but that rarely seems to ...

How Unethical is the RIAA?
2008-03-05 07:01:00
There are more nasty rumors floating around about the RIAA claiming that their greed goes far deeper than just suing the elderly, twelve year olds and the general music loving community. I know that before catching a a story on another site, I thought that the RIAA had pretty much bottomed out in ...

Time for another Carnival of Rock ‘n’ Roll . There were more contributions this month than ever before, something I’m taking as a sign that the carnival is reaching more and more people every month. Unfortunately not everything was accepted this time, but the posts that were are still as interesting as ever. Michael ...

King Crimson Live and the Incredible Guitar Work of Robert Fripp
2008-02-27 07:01:00

Commemorating the Birthday of George Harrison
2008-02-25 07:01:00
Yesterday was a special anniversary in the rock and roll world. George Harrision would have turned 65 on February 24 2008. Although he has been dead for almost 7 years now, I find his music to be just as powerful as always and thought that it would be worth commemorating George’s birthday. Although I’m ...

Happy Valentines Day from the Soul of Rock and Roll
2008-02-14 07:01:00
There are plenty of songs dedicated to love and significant others out there, so you shouldn’t have any problem fining the perfect soundtrack form this Valentine’s Day. Personally I like “Maybe I”m Amazed” by Paul McCartney as one of my favorite romantic rock and roll songs, but there are thousands more. Whether you have a rock and roll filled one or otherwise, make your Valentine’s Day a memorable one. Happy Valentines from the Soul of Rock ‘n’ Roll . Take care, D.A.N. UK to Ban Illegal Music Downloaders from the Internet?
2008-02-13 07:01:00
Apparently the UK has come up with a way to prevent all the illegal downloading that’s going on… cut the downloaders off from the Internet . That’s right, in case you missed this bit of music industry news, a new Green Paper from the UK government is “supposedly” in the works that says ISP’s should be required to implement a three strikes rule against those who use the Internet for acquiring pirated material and illegal file sharing. First strike would be an email warning, second a suspension and third a termination. Apparently this proposal comes from a leaked document of sorts and statements from the spokesperson for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport in the UK seem to indicate that this was only an early draft for a new plan. For all the music lovers out there in the UK, I certainly hope this is only an early draft. Maybe I’m biased because of my belief that downloading (preferably legal, but illegal as well) actually benefits the mus...

Thoughts on the Relevance of the Grammy Awards to Modern Music
2008-02-11 07:01:00

Public television comes through again. Last night I caught John Fogerty on Soundstage… on PBS… promoting his latest album. Rock & Roll Feature: Marc Bolan Is the Electric Warrior of T-Rex
2008-02-02 07:01:00
This is the fifteenth in a series of Rock & Roll features I’m writing for this site. I’m a rock and roller, so this column is a way for me to feature a different album that I like, from different genres every month. When it comes to one hit wonders, sometimes that one hit really is that group’s most interesting work. Other times though, the label of one hit wonder is completely based on context. I live in the States and have all my life, and here T-Rex wasn’t much more than a one hit wonder, the hit being “Bang a Gong (Get it On)”. For some reason it took me years to get over that label even though it was purely a USA thing, the band was huge in England. Just a few months ago finally checking out the band’s catalog . I was so impressed by their music and convinced that they are much more than a one hit wonder that I wrote a piece about their progression from folk to proto punk for the Soul of Rock ‘n’ Roll. You can read that pi...
