2008-01-28 07:01:00
Way back in July, I was lucky enough to attend the 2007 Crossroads guitar festival, held right here in the Chicagoland area. Just recently, I finally got the check out the DVD release to commemorate this unique concert event. There were tons of great performances that day, so I’ve been looking forward ...

Symphonic Shred: Unique Live Performance from Steve Vai
2008-01-27 07:01:00
As a guitarist, I may love blues and the more subtle (not that blues has to be subtle) part of the electric guitar, but I’m not going to lie to you and say that I don’t dig those insanely good shredding moments as well. And not all insanely fast guitar pickers are created ...

Stone Temple Pilots to Reunite this Summer and a New Velvet Revolver Album?
2008-01-26 07:01:00
It seems that reunion tours always seem to draw attention, with good reason. This one is actually a bit of a surprise to me, but also quite exciting news if it goes off without a hitch… and there are the possibility for a few major hitches. A few people now have mentioned ...

Do I Have to Get it to Like it: Thoughts on Progressive Rock
2008-01-25 07:01:00
Certain genres continue to be my favorites years after years, one of which is progressive rock. Sure, there are plenty of others too and my tastes are forever evolving, but for some reason I’m very drawn to progressive, experimental and more ?adventurous? (a horrible term to use) forms of rock and roll… probably ...

Thoughts on the Blues ? Metal therapeutic Connection
2008-01-23 07:01:00
I’ve been a fan of the blues for a long time, but I’ve been a fan of hard rock for even longer, and if you follow hard rock to it’s ultimate conclusion you of course end up listening to a bit of metal as well. I’m not a hardcore metal head and I ...

Happy Martin Luther King Jr Day from the Soul of Rock and Roll
2008-01-21 07:01:00
I consider Martin Luther King Jr Day to be one of our most important holidays here in America. Racism is still a major cultural problem that needs to be addressed as much as possible to prevent prejudice and promote equality. Music can take a very active role in this (and actually has ...

B.B. King Plays the Blues for Memphis
2008-01-19 07:01:00
Today I got a moment or two to browse through the internet videos. I’ve been listening to a lot of progressive rock and thought I would check out a few videos from some of the bands in my play list as of recently. In one of those happy accidents though, I stumbled ...

Welcome to Black Mountain: New and Unique Progressive Rock
2008-01-17 07:01:00
Unfortunately I haven’t been able to listen to a whole lot of new bands recently. I have lots in my queue all lined up including a couple that I think are really interesting that I just haven’t formalized exactly what I want to say about them yet (and for some it’s been months ...

Music Continuing to Make a Difference with Anniversary Concert
2008-01-16 07:01:00
It seems as if 2008 is another big year of anniversaries just like 2007 was. This time it’s the 30th anniversary of the Rock Against Racism event that saw some 100,000 people protesting on the streets of London and concluding with a performance from one of my favorite bands: The Clash (there ...

Today, January 13, 2008, marks the anniversary of a legendary event in the country music and rock and roll worlds. It was exactly 40 years ago today that Johnny Cash played his infamous Folsom Prison show. As much as this was a fantastic concert event, it was also a statement about who ...

The Song Remains the Same Part 2: A DVD Set Review
2008-01-11 07:01:00
For the past few days I’ve had the pleasure of screening part two of the new The Song Remains the Same release. I was pretty excited about finally seeing the film to go with the soundtrack and the bonuses certainly sweeten the deal a little. Originally, I had thought that the additional ...

The Song Remains the Same Part 1: An Album Review
2008-01-10 07:01:00
I don’t know about the rest of you, but for me, one of the most exciting album releases in 2007 was definitely the expanded version of Led Zeppelin’s The Song Remains the Same. This re-master and re-release was for both the original film on DVD and the soundtrack and was timed perfectly to coincide ...

David Bowie Live in London 1973: Ziggy Stardust to Celebrate a Rock and Rol
2008-01-08 07:01:00
January 8th is a day of rock and roll birthdays. Today is the birthday of David Bowie. That’s right, today Mr. Glam himself turns a very respectable 61 and to celebrate I thought I would share this great collection of clips from a live performance of Ziggy Stardust way back in 1973. There ...

Thoughts on Sound Quality in the Digital Age
2008-01-06 07:01:00
Here’s an interesting exercise to try out if you get the chance. Take a listen to an album recorded back during the heyday of vinyl on it’s original vinyl and then more recent remastered releases… or even early CD releases and newer remastered versions. I did this recently with a few albums, ...

This is the fourteenth in a series of Rock & Roll features I’m writing for this site. I’m a rock and roller, so this column is a way for me to feature a different album that I like, from different genres every month. Seeing this is the first Rock & Roll Feature of 2008, I ...

Well, 2007 has come and gone and today (or actually tomorrow) we embark on a new year, 2008. Looking back on 2007, there were some incredible rock and roll events: Led Zeppelin reuniting, Radiohead releasing an album basically for free online, and all the rest including the one especially important to me, the ...

The Twisted, Progressive Guitar Work of Frank Zappa Live
2007-12-28 07:01:00
It was a good day yesterday, at least from a musical standpoint for me, as it certainly was a sad day from a world events view what with the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, (condolences to the entire nation of Pakistan and all those affected by the tragedy). I spent most of the day listening to Frank Zappa wail away on guitar… while working, but still a good time. It was probably myth and legend that first drew me to the music of Zappa, but after a bit of a grace period, I’ve really started to dig it, especially his guitar work. It’s been months since I first heard him play and there was an immediate impact, but I didn’t realize how much until just recently. Now I own a number of his albums and find that his guitar playing has had a huge impact on my own music. I’d best describe Zappa’s guitar style as beautifully fractured and progressive, but also extremely melodic. At times he’s very harmonically oriented, b...

Thoughts on, and Suggestions for, Holiday Radio
2007-12-26 07:01:00
As today is the day after Christmas, officially making it (at least partially) ?post holiday season?, I think it’s alright for me to voice my gripe about holiday radio without sounding like I have no holiday spirit. Now don’t get me wrong, I only really listen to the radio to begin with when ...

10 Favorite Holiday Songs Part 2: Traditional Holiday Songs
2007-12-24 07:01:00

10 Favorite Holiday Songs Part 1: Rock and Roll Holiday Songs
2007-12-23 07:01:00
Music is a big part of many different holidays, but this winter season seems to outrank the rest in terms of musical composition. There are new holiday songs being written all the time so it makes sense that over the years more than a few rock and roll artists have chosen to leave ...

Rare Rock and Roll Movie: The Cure Live in Japan
2007-12-20 07:01:00
I remember first hearing music from the Cure a long time ago and thinking… Oh, those are some great songs, catchy, exciting, artistic, sort of punk but more (and also very 80s both in good and bad ways)… sounds pretty good. It wasn’t until a lot later when I saw the Cure live ...

Fast Turnaround from the Smashing Pumpkins
2007-12-17 07:01:00
We may have to end up chalking this up to music industry rumors or other less than reliable source, but being a bit of a rabid Smashing Pumpkins fan, this news really peaked my interest. Apparently the new incarnation of the Pumpkins is returning to the studio a bit sooner than first anticipated ...

Thoughts on YouTube and the Music Industry
2007-12-16 07:01:00
Since it’s debut and popularity explosion, there’s been some controversy over YouTube. Much of the debate stems from more copyright infringement issues and problems with people uploading material from ripped DVDs (copyrighted) etc. To be honest, I never really was into YouTube when it first debuted, maybe because I had no desire ...

Rock and Roll Pioneer Ike Turner Passes Away at 76
2007-12-14 07:01:00
There was some sad news on the rock and roll front yesterday when the iconic Ike Turner passed away at 76.
