Guitarist Series: 4 Underrated Modern Guitarists
2007-09-07 07:01:00 As a guitar player, I’m fascinated by just about any guitar playing, but most of my guitar heroes either come from classic rock of blues. Thats not necessarily a knock against more modern guitarists though, and so as part of my guitarist series for the Soul of Rock ‘n’ Roll, I thought I’d ... The Late Great Cream: Less than Three Years, but a Huge Influence
2007-09-06 07:01:00 In rock and roll history, there are some bands that have obtained legendary, even mythic status. The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Grateful Dead etc… each with careers that span multiple albums and often a decade or more. Then there is another group of rock groups that achieved this massive status ... More About: Great , Blues Rock , Classic Rock , Experimental , Years
Correction to the Carnival of Rock and Roll September 2007
2007-09-04 07:01:00 Well, unfortunately August was a month prone to minuscule, but annoying, mistakes here at the Soul of Rock ‘n’ Roll in the form of ridiculous typo’s, technical problems and other things that I’d rather had not happened, probably brought on by stress, lack of sleep and being overworked. Still, I was hoping that September would start out better… Unfortunately… it hasn’t. It was brought to my attention that through some sort of mix up, whether technical or an error on my part, that there was a mistake in this month’s Carnival of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The carnival included two articles from Sheena Metal over at http://www.music-highway.com/. The problem is that by mistake, the same two articles that she had submitted to the August carnival were included again, instead of her two newest. I’m not quite sure how it happened, especially since I read them and didn’t realize that they were the same as the previous month... More About: September 2007
Happy Labor Day from the Soul of Rock and Roll
2007-09-03 07:01:00 Well, it’s another Labor Day here in the USA… the day where we celebrate working, by not working. To further celebrate I think I’ll spend the day listening to some of my favorite work related songs… I’ll start at John Lennon’s “Working Class Hero” and work my way through every song I can find about working and/or not working… sounds like a good day off to me. Enjoy the holiday, if you are taking a holiday, as this is a happy Labor Day from the Soul of Rock ‘n’ Roll . Take care, D.A.N. Rock & Roll Feature: The Traveling Wilburys Vol 1
2007-09-02 07:01:00 This is the tenth in a series of Rock & Roll features I’m writing for this site. I’m a rock and roller, so this column is a way for me to feature a different album that I like, from different genres every month. When it comes to “super groups”, I’ve always been partial to the short lived Traveling Wilburys. Originally coming together in the late 80s to record a b-side for one of George Harrison’s singles, the band consisted of Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne as the Wilburys, and only released one album with all five members called Vol. 1. Roy Orbison died of a heart attack shortly after it’s release, making these songs some of his last recordings. Although the remaining four would go on to record another album, Vol. 3, I’ve always felt that their first is the better of the two and is also a amazing album overall. Musically, the Traveling Wilburys contain elements that are reminiscent of each of the members so... More About: Feature , Feat
Carnival of Rock and Roll September 1, 2007
2007-09-01 07:01:00 Another interesting month for the Carnival of Rock ‘n’ Roll . I’m glad to see some new people submitting their work and some new ideas as well. Lets see what we got: Fitbuff, sent along an interesting piece on the Mozart Effect, and although not dealing really with rock and roll, it’s an interesting read about exactly what kind of effects music has on us, and apparently the New York Jets. Check it out: New York Jets Listen to Mozart on the Football Field Another two interesting articles from Sheena over at Music Highway: Set Goals- Your Rockstardom Wasn’t Built In A Day! And: Create A Buzz - If You Build It They Will Come! Jeremy over at the Consumer Corner passed along an interesting review of an album I probably should look at myself: the latest release from Fuel in: Fuel - Angels & Devils Sam Smith of Scholars and Rogues sent along a interesting interview with rock and roll icon Graham Parker that is definitely worth checking out, here: Graham ... A Tribute to Hilly Kristal: Legendary Rock Venue Owner
2007-08-30 07:01:00 Some places have a special heritage in rock and roll: Woodstock, the Fillmore, and punk rock’s major birthplace, the CBGB in New York. Although the CBGB closed back in 2006, today I’d like to remember the venue and especially the man behind the venue: Hilly Kristal . A few days ago, Kristal passed away at 75 after a long bout with lung caner. The CBGB was apparently originally opened as a country/bluegrass/blues venue back in 1973, something I was unaware of as I always associate it more with the early punk movement. Although it has often been described as more than just a little grimy, especially the bathroom, the CBGB was a rock and roll icon, as was it’s owner. There were lots of bands known for their shows at the CBGB including Blondie, Sonic Youth and of course the band I will always associate with this venue: the Ramones. It developed into one of the major punk venues over the years as well as a place where new bands could come to cut their teeth and ga... More About: Rock , Owner , Tribute , Tribu
The Peter Green Era Fleetwood Mac
2007-08-28 07:01:00 I remember first hearing the pop styling of Fleetwood Mac very early in my youth on classic rock radio. They always seemed like one of those classic era bands that were always talked about in some way or another. Later on as I began to really investigate classic rock I did seek ... Misunderstood and Under Appreciated: The Story of Zwan
2007-08-27 07:01:00 Some bands go unappreciated in their time becoming sort of cult favorites as opposed to what their talent might deserve. Sometimes there are extenuating circumstances, or a particular market or perhaps ?the world simple wasn’t ready for their music? as is so often the case. With Billy Corgan’s seemingly ?doomed from the ... More About: Story , Modern Rock , Experimental , The Story , Zwan
Deep Folksy Blues and Rock and Roll from the Darrin James Band
2007-08-25 07:01:00 August must have been the month of vaguely folk-ish singer/songwriter music because it seemed as if every suggestion I received for the Soul of Rock ‘n’ Roll was in that genre or at least close enough to it that I would associate it with that label. That’s not necessarily a bad thing as ... More About: Band , Blues , Blues Rock
New Music from the Eagles: Their First Studio Album in 28 Years
2007-08-24 07:01:00 I can’t really make up my mind about bands getting back together to record after long periods of… well not recording. It always seems like such an exciting idea, especially when it’s huge bands that are rock legends and the mere possibility of ?new? music from them makes some people giddy and weak ... Black Sabbath Live from 1970
2007-08-23 07:01:00 I find it somewhat funny that Black Sabbath is a band a got into AFTER I’d gone through my metal phase and had started listening to classic rock. Seems kind of backwards that I didn’t listen to the real pioneering metal band at all when I was really into metal. Backwards or ... More About: Classic Rock , Black Sabbath , Heavy metal , Live
Hunkasaurus and His Pet Dog Guitar, MUSEA and the Artists Against Corporate
2007-08-22 07:01:00 Sometimes I think about how many artists are going by the wayside because they cannot get support for their music. I’m sure there must be thousands if not millions out there who have real talent, just were/are not ?radio friendly?. This is unfortunately one of the failures of the capitalist music industry; ... T-Bone Walker Plays the Blues Like No One Else: Stormy Monday Live
2007-08-20 07:01:00 I think one of my favorite byproducts from this new Internet era of music is the increased popularity of so many great blues artists due to great footage of them playing live. Blues is the roots of rock and roll and the blues greats had such a profound influence on the classic rock era that I don’t think we can really begin to understand artists/bands like Eric Clapton and Led Zeppelin (and countless others) without going back to listen to their influences. Plus, along with seeing where those bands came from, these players are really what blues is all about with some of the most emotional and soulful music ever written. “Stormy Monday ” has been one of my favorite blues classics since I first heard it covered by the Allman Brothers Band… and then again later by Eric Clapton. Both of those are great versions, but I don’t think either really lives up to the original by T-Bone Walker… I was lucky enough to find a clip on Youtube of this legendary blues ... 5 Underrated Songs from the Who
2007-08-19 07:01:00 The Who was one of the first bands I really got into from the Classic Rock era. I think what attracted me was how instantly recognizable the band’s major hits were. Songs like “My Generation”, “Who Are You”, “Teenage Wasteland”, “Behind Blue Eyes” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again” are such epic songs and rock standards that I knew them, and that they were done by the Who, long before I owned any of the band’s actual albums. Those are some amazing songs, but they don’t tell the complete story of the band (singles/hits never do). Looking back across their catalog I find many songs are a little overshadowed by the major hits and often go overlooked by the more casual fans. These 5 songs are a few of those that I consider more underrated, but are some of my favorites and great reasons to really delve into this band’s catalog if you’re so far been limited to Greatest Hits collections. 1: “The Good’s Gone” from The Who Sings... Lennon Solo Catalog Goes Digital, Harrison on the Way?
2007-08-17 07:01:00 If you’ve been following music news in the past week or so then you’ve seen the announcements of how John Lennon’s solo catalog available digitally, and according to some sources, George Harrison’s will be by the end of 2007. Both of these things are definitely exciting. Lennon’s solo work was always my favorite of ... More About: Society , Classic Rock , Solo , Catalog , Digital
A Tribute to the King: The 30th Anniversary of the Death of Elvis Presley
2007-08-16 07:01:00 On August 16th 1977, a tragedy struck the music world. It was 30 years ago today that Elvis Presley passed away and the music world forever lost an amazing musician and cultural icon. So much has been said about Elvis over the years that it seems almost ridiculous to try and say ... More About: Society , Anniversary , The King , Roll
The Band Live in 1970
2007-08-14 07:01:00 Perhaps they’re one of the more overlooked bands of the classic rock era (I don’t really think so, but it’s possible), but it took far too long for me to come to a band simply called ?The Band ? after I started listening to classic rock, and actually even longer before I could actually name ... A Brief Tribute to the Merv Griffith: Game Show Pioneer, Composer and So Mu
2007-08-13 07:01:00 Although this is not necessarily a music related post depending on your viewpoint, I felt it was necessary to acknowledge and pay tribute to Merv Griffith, who passed away yesterday from prostate cancer at the age of 82. Pearl Jam and Lollapalooza Censorship: A Rock Concert Pointing to Bigger Pr
2007-08-11 07:01:00 It appears as if pop culture has another censorship issue on it’s hands after Pearl Jam’s recent performance at Lollapalooza. The Evolving Face of Incubus: 6 Songs from Across The Band?s Career
2007-08-10 07:01:00 I always like looking back on how I came to some of my favorite bands as it usually results in some ridiculously absurd stories and my first experience with Incubus is no exception. Straight Up Exciting Rock and Roll from Juliette and the Licks
