Foo Fighters Rock Wembley With Extra Special Guests
2008-06-10 07:01:00
In case you missed the news, several thousand (something like 80,000?), extremely lucky Foo Fighters fans were treated to one heck of a special event June 7th 2008. Recently the Foos have been reaching out to some of their heroes. They played with a couple members of Rush just recently, although I can’t ...

This is the nineteenth in a series of Rock & Roll features I’m writing for this site. I’m a rock and roller, so this column is a way for me to feature a different album that I like, from different genres every month. Although many bands have gone unrecognized over the years yet have made tremendous ...

The Soul of Rock and Roll Mourns the Passing of Bo Diddley
2008-06-03 07:01:00
Yesterday was a truly sad day for rock and roll as one of it’s original founding members passed away. Bo Diddley died yesterday of heart failure after months of ill health at the age of 79, and so I thought I would take today to mourn his passing, offer condolences to his family and ...

No Carnival of Rock and Roll for June 1st 2008
2008-06-01 07:01:00
Unfortunately there was a number of technical problems during the month of May here at the Soul of Rock ‘n’ Roll . These problems appear to have been cleared away finally, but it has resulted in there being no carnival of rock and roll this month. I always look forward to reading the entries for the ...

Happy Memorial Day from the Soul of Rock and Roll
2008-05-26 07:01:00
Hey everyone, just thought I’d wish a quick happy Memorial Day. Although it’s often more about the barbecues and parades, let’s make sure that we try to remember what Memorial Day is really celebrating: the men and women who have fought and died in service for their country. I like to do that ...

Thoughts on Tours, Tickets, Festivals and More
2008-05-24 07:01:00
As it’s almost summer, it’s almost time for the summer tours, festivals and all the other great musical events that come about when the weather gets warm. It seems that with society and the music industry evolving though, things like touring, concert festivals and even tickets must find new ways to fit in with ...

Iron Maiden Live 1980: Heavy Metal with More to it than Meets the Eye
2008-05-22 07:01:00
I took a glance through the archives recently here at the Soul of Rock ‘n’ Roll and then a subsequent glance through my music collection and decided that for someone who loves massively thick and fuzzed out guitar sounds… I don’t have nearly enough hard rock and heavy metal in my collection. Can’t tell ...

Traffic Live in 1972 to Celebrate Steve Winwood Turning 60
2008-05-14 07:01:00
It’s hard to imagine that back in the early 60s with the Spencer Davis Group that Steve Winwood was a mere 15. It was only 4 years later that he would put together the band Traffic , one of the first bands to delve into jazz fusion. I first came to know about Steve ...

Weezer, Lyrics, Record Labels and Why the Industry Needs to Change: A Rant
2008-05-12 07:01:00
It seems the number of bands who are upset with their record labels, is sort of skyrocketing. Actually I think it’s more so the number of bands that are coming out and speaking about their label troubles that is increasing, as opposed to the actual number of bands unhappy, because the times just seem ...

More Free Music from Nine Inch Nails
2008-05-07 05:13:00
As the music industry continues to shift away from label focus and towards a more artist centric viewpoint (at least in my view), we’re seeing more and more music released online where the fans can get it directly from the band. Leading that charge are many of the more progressive bands including a certain ...

The Uplifting Magic of Santana Live: A Concert Review
2008-04-27 07:01:00
There is always something extra special about going to a concert that cannot be found in other music formats. Albums, even live albums, just don’t seem to be able to capture all of the energy and atmosphere in the room when a band is on stage performing. That isn’t to say that the ...

The Hook Plays the Blues Live: The Mastery of John Lee Hooker
2008-04-24 07:01:00
I don’t think anyone can really debate that blues is where rock and roll all began. Which artists had the most impact on early rock and especially classic rock can be debated to the ends of the earth with supporters of various artists all having valid points and defending their idols to the death. ...

Happy Earth Day from the Soul of Rock and Roll
2008-04-22 07:01:00
Today is Earth Day so I thought I’d take a minute to put environmental thoughts into everyone’s head. The music industry is not only putting on benefit concerts to raise awareness about the climate crisis, but is working to help make the world a greener place in other ways as well. New music industry practices ...

Zappa Plays Zappa: A DVD Review
2008-04-21 07:01:00
There’s been a number of amazing concert tours in the past few years… many of which I was lucky enough to attend. Certainly up near the top of the ones I wish I could have seen is the Zappa Plays Zappa tour. Critically acclaimed, this project was the brain child of one Dweezil ...

Digital Beatles Fan Remasters Released Online
2008-04-18 07:01:00
This is easily one of the coolest stories I’ve heard about in a long time. Beatles fans have only been waiting for someone to come along, remaster the original albums and release them in updated CD (or other format) versions. It’s not that the original CD releases are of a horrible quality, but ...

Foxboro Hot Tubs Revealed to Actually be Green Day
2008-04-14 07:01:00
So for the past couple of months or so there’s been this band floating around on the Internet called Foxboro Hot Tubs that has a striking similarity (at least in some aspects) to a very famous band called Green Day. Speculations was that they were actually the same band just trying out a little ...

Guitarist Series: Being Inspired to Practice
2008-04-13 07:01:00
Playing any instrument is really a love/hate relationship. We all want to be able to play fantastically powerful/expressive/advanced/compelling music, but rarely want to practice to reach such a goal. There are exceptions, but I think the majority of us would rather ?play? our instruments than ?practice? them. Why shouldn’t we? Playing ...

The Clash: London Calling Live from Japan
2008-04-09 07:01:00

Rock and Roll Feature: Freak Out with the Mothers of Invention
2008-04-04 07:01:00
This is the seventeenth in a series of Rock & Roll features I’m writing for this site. I’m a rock and roller, so this column is a way for me to feature a different album that I like, from different genres every month. As I’ve mentioned before, one of the things that fascinates me about rock and roll is the overall progression of ideas. From back when it started in the 50s, artists have pushed the boundaries to almost limitless proportions in a relatively short time. I’ve written a number about these musical progressions, but each new album is like a new piece of the puzzle, continuing to intrigue me as more of the rock family tree is revealed and new connections are made. The album I’ve chosen for this month’s feature is a big piece of the puzzle for me and represents innovation which would be the roots of many different genres. It is also the first from an artist who would go on to be one of the most prolific composers in history and one ...

Delayed Carnival of Rock and Roll
2008-04-02 07:01:00
Technical difficulties have forced me to delay the publishing of this month’s Carnival of Rock ‘n’ Roll . Don’t worry it’s nothing serious… the Soul of Rock ‘n’ Roll isn’t going anywhere anytime soon… but it does mean that the carnival will be published tomorrow, April 3, 2008 instead of today. Although I wish this was not the case, it has turned out to be unavoidable. There is one added bonus though, I’ve also extended the deadline for submissions to the carnival giving you one more day to find your favorite music/rock and roll related posts and send them along. More information can still be found at: http://www.soulofrocknroll.com/?page_id=4 1 The carnival has already had a pretty big turn out this month and these extra two days might put it over the top and really make it huge, so make sure to check back tomorrow for the Carnival of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Take care, D.A.N. Owner/Editor - The Soul of Rock &l...

Rock and Roll Found to be the Cure for Many Common Ailments!!
2008-04-01 07:01:00
Exciting news today in the world of science. Starting back in the late 80s, prompted by the growing concern about what effect pop culture was having on the youth of the nation, the United States government started funding a project to determine exactly what effect listening to rock music has on an individual. Precise experiments were conducted with results that have surprised everyone except the rock enthusiasts. Rock and Roll was found to be a highly effective cure for many common ailments including, but not limited to: close mindedness, old age, boredom and unhappiness. Although music enthusiasts have been singing the praises of rock and roll since it’s inception, the results of these tests have finally provided scientific proof. The results are quite extraordinary, often having almost immediate effects. One participant was quoted as saying “… once they turned on that rock music, I just immediately felt better, like I was happy, having fun and more alive t...

First Listens to the Latest Raconteurs Album
2008-03-30 07:01:00
Although I’d already had something planned and written for today, I couldn’t help myself and had to write about the new album from Jack White, Brendon Benson and company. The new Raconteurs album was released just this past week and I had my copy on pre-order so it showed up right when I was hoping it would. I’ve been listening to it nearly non-stop since then and I don’t anticipate it leaving my play list any time soon… unless it’s usurped by some other new music of course. When I got the album it was a “must listen to immediately” sort of moment due to the anticipation. A big fan of the band I’ve been waiting for new music for a while, especially because the first one is great, but also just slightly short to my ears. The release was a bit rushed to production, recorded in February 2008 and released at the end of March with no singles released beforehand or anything (at least as far as I know). Designed to get the music into the ...

Paul Rogers and Queen to Record New Material?
2008-03-30 07:01:00
Little interesting bit of music news floating around recently. Apparently the collaboration between Paul Rogers and Brian May and Roger Taylor from Queen is ending up being quite a good match. The trio (although I’m sure there’s a bassist there somewhere too, it’s just not John Deacon) is even planning on recording new material under the name Queen. The group released a track called “Say it’s Not True” back in 2007 on World Aids Day… a logical charitable choice… but apparently there were longer recording sessions and they’re all digging what they’re hearing. I remember seeing Queen perform with Paul Rogers as part of some awards show (the Rock Awards maybe?) a year or two ago and was pretty intrigued. It’s not an obvious match, first because Rogers is obviously NOT Freddie Mercury, the voice Queen fans have grown to expect as part of the band’s music, and second because Rogers is quite a different type of vocalist...

Beck: Blues Singer in Disguise
2008-03-29 06:01:00
I glanced through my past posts and was shocked and appalled (not really) that I had yet to do a post on Beck . I covered Jeff Beck’s guitar work, albeit briefly, but not the intriguing blend of styles from the man who just goes by Beck. I’ve been listening to a fair amount of his music recently anyways, and so it seemed time to at the very least touch on his work and in particular, one of the reasons I like it. If you grew up around the same time I did, then you’re instantly familiar with some Beck songs. I remember when songs like “Loser” and “Devil’s Haircut” debuted and just being drawn in by the blending of urban beats, wordplay, artsy folk, electronica and a thousand other styles to create something completely unique. I still feel drawn in like that with all of Beck’s songs as I think he’s one of the most creative artists around the modern rock scene. What I really like about it is the underlying blues that exists throughout all ...
