Number 530 - John Lee Hooker
2007-12-16 01:48:00 Number 530John Lee Hooker "The Healer"(1989)..Genre:Bluesart by seduced-by-the-sunThe picture on left by *Seduce by the Sun* would make a terrific poster, don't you think? Some very talented people @ www.deviantart.com and i envy everyone i feature on this site, if only i was half as good. Now i don't know if John Lee Hooker was into the ole voodoo black magic & I'm not suggesting he was, but I've always slightly associated the Blues & the New Orleans/Deep South scene together. What i would give to walk around St Louis cemetery, it looks absolutely fascinating (I'd rather walk on it than be underneath it). FYI John Lee Hooker is buried in a San Fransisco cemetery (go figure, he was born in Mississippi) click here for Google Airways to take you there.22.08.17 to 21.07.01 He was beloved worldwide as the king of the endless boogie, a genuine blues superstar whose droning, hypnotic one-chord grooves were at once both ultra-primitive and timeless. Yet, down under we have to tolerate Christmas advertising with a "White Out" theme. Snow, snowflakes, snowmen, snow-angels and yet its 25 degrees (77 Fahrenheit for our non metric friends) yet the media insist on a white Xmas, its crazy i tell you. (For the record that video is truly disgusting). Anyway, back to another eating disorder is Hall & Oates "Maneater" from 1982, it was the duo's biggest hit in their long career beginning in 1967. Back then it was OK for two men to sing in a duo, you hardly have anyone today doing that for the fear of abuse & ridicule, funnily enough at the turn of this century it was OK to have 5 lads in a "boys" band and not much was said. Name just one duo that are around today ..... and no .... Akon & Eminem don't count. Nor Janet & Michael Jackson either smarty pants ..... that's a completely different genre altogether. So much time has passed and so little has been achieved. I was telling Mr. Almighty a bit ago how busy life seems to have gotten, way to busy, I forget to breath sometimes, haha. Seems my only down time is listening to music, such a wonderful thing music. It's my sanity but it is also my insanity. I listen to lose myself, I listen to find myself. I listen to calm myself, I listen to be agitated. Music is a huge chunk of my life. But eh, the music arts are here, will always be here and these little ladies seem to have been extremely popular in their time.Even my kids like this song, go figure!!! It's a catchy tune, can't say I have any fond memories associated with this tune, other than some people really seemed to walk like that for awhile, haha. Wings with Paul McCartney come to mind, but they were never as great as The Beatles were they?. After that its a bit of a struggle to think of anyone else. Sure you throw in a couple of hundred solo artists from "World Famous" bands but that doesn't compare with Nirvana & Foo Fighters or Beatles & Wings. Metallica & Megadeth? Ugh, I give up. I don't want to upset Nirvana fans (being one myself) but you have to ask who was really the driving force in Nirvana? If Kurt had survived being fatalistic about breathing then I'm sure Kobain and Grohl would have been the same league as Lennon/McCartney of the new Millennium. Guess we will never know.News Alert! Well, you wouldn't want to rock up to your first day at college with a name like that would you? So it would be quite surprising if you knew he changed his name to that, from Harold Jenkins? Ah the good ole 50's i tell you. So fess up ..... How many of you have had a pompadour hmmm? It reminds me of, say, "Christine" the movie about a homicidal spiteful evil car (written by Stephen King, i would love to see Christine kill the VW "Herbie" take that Disney!) Ouch, you might say, but Eric has always been more comfortable being behind a guitar rather than the mic, that's why he has expansive guitar solos, ...maybe. Now don't get me wrong, i think he carries his voice very well and would no doubt make me look like a cat on a Friday night hanging out on some fence meowing at a full moon in F flat. The only gripe i have about Mr Clapton is the "Legendary" status bestowed as a guitar player. I wrote on Number 636 (Jeff Beck), the "Top 100 Guitarist of all Time" by Rolling Stone Magazine rank Clapton at #4. I completely disagree with that assessment. There are far better guitar players than Clapton and even to most points, Hendrix. Clapton is great, yes, but not earth shattering, maybe ranked as #16 say .... but #4??? "Eve of Destruction" sounds Dylanesque to the core, but where this song differs is it's not as all "self important" as Dylan is, rather the "Eve of Destruction" song is honest ... "world importance". I can imagine every Dylan fan wants to grab their AK47's in disgust of such a comment, but then that is the contradiction between the two artists.Another interesting aspect about this song is that even though it's about the Vietnam War it does not have that sensation of Hippynism, as one would imagine flowers and Tie-Dye exploding. This song is rockier, edgier, almost a "Lennon" like chant as "Give Peace a Chance". If desired, this song would need only a few tweaks and guitar modulations and it would be a number 1 hit in 2007, just in time for the (sponsered by)"i-Pod War aka Iraq Police Action" or even the "Iran WW III Conflict"The eastern wo... Or was Skiffle/Rockabilly commonplace around that time? In this countdown there is a song by Lonnie Donegan called "Tom Dooley" (Number 734) & that was dated 1958 Britain. So somewhere, someone influenced somebody in the 1950's. Yes, Skiffle was invented early 1900's by America, but I'm referring to "Electric Skiffle/Rockabilly" sound. George Jones is traditionally known as a "Country Singer" but i swear i can hear components of Skiffle sounding qualities, so its confusing when i read this statement in Wiki .... "Skiffle had little impact in the United States beyond Donegan's hits, but some bands have imitated British accents. So what was Michael Hutchence thinking before he hopped on a chair examining the ceiling at close range? Did the light bulb need changing? Whenever i think of me mates Guns n Roses , it reminds me of my favourite film Harley Davidson & The Marlboro Man I'm telling ya its ^%$^%#&^$^* awesome! I hear there is going to be a sequel called Harley Davidson with Marlboro Man & The Budweiser Boys. Man i can't ^%$^&#%$@ wait for that one. There could be nothing better than Ridin', Smokin' & Drinkin' sleepin'. Amen, father truckers. ~ GazzaArt by SLUR07Guns N' Roses' debut, Appetite for Destruction was a turning point for hard rock in the late '80s -- it was a dirty, dangerous, and mean record in a time when heavy metal meant nothing but a good time. On the surface, Guns N' Roses may appear to celebrate the same things as their peers -- namely, sex, liquor, drugs, and rock & roll -- but there is a nasty edge to their songs, since Axl Rose doesn't see much fun in the urban sp... 2007-09-26 10:29:00 Number 558Billy Idol "Mony Mony"(1981 & 87)..Genre:Punk RockThe genre of punk has changed so much in 30 years, from Sex Pistols to Blink 182. Lets see Neil Young sing that "From Hank to Hendrix". Punk was to angry for me in the 70's, i was to busy smoking and surfing to be bothered with anger but being stoned didn't stop me from liking the Pistols & Banshees. God save the Queen and all that. ~ crowbarredart by lithiumpicnicAlong with Duran Duran, Billy Idol was one the first pop/rock artists to achieve massive success in the early '80s due to a then brand-new U.S. television network, MTV. Hospitals & travelling (sounds like a horror novel) are all out of the way. I can relax and write here again, surely nothing can go wrong? ..... Uh oh, wait ..... It's the School Holidays. ack. Why is it i can never enjoy music when its the school holidays? I guess the only best thing about being a kid, is just that, being a kid. When your older all that enjoyment of screaming just has no novelty in it anymore. When i was a kid all we did was run around outside with a ball. Now they camp around a PlayStation singing dreadfully on singstar (should be re-named Cats Choir) or the infernal Runescape. The funny thing is, is that every generation moans about the same dilemma, just not digitally as we do. ~ CrowbarredThe Album Hootie & the Blowfish's debut album, Cracked Rear View, was the success story of 1994/1995, selling over 12 mill...
