A National Day Celebration - Merdeka!
2007-08-31 13:17:00
It was a glorious day! A National Day celebration for us together with our cell group. We ate durians, had wild boar curry and home made ice cream. We got to see a Ferrari up close as we were about to set home. The owner was kind enough to let us pose with it :) He claims his car is 10 yrs old but it looked so well maintained. The engine was pristine!Wished I could have driven it or at least heard it being fired up :)

We are back in Kuala Lumpur for a short break. Not much of a break since we've got so many errands to run and things to settle before we head back to Ningbo. David has already got meetings scheduled for middle of September so it is like a race against time. After such a long period of inactivity, my mind is rather slow. We have a moments rest (that's why I can post) in between meeting family, friends and also completing our to do list.I am just praying for strength to be able to pack up my house in time before we leave so that the house agent can have the keys and help us get a suitable tenant.

Personalized Photo Blankets
2007-08-25 05:26:00
I have been taking a lot of photos since I've switched to a digital camera. I've also taken more photos because of blogging. A picture does speak a thousand words, doesn't it!I love seeing my photos on my blog and now I've been learning more about taking photos of food. I know some people actually develop all their photos but I haven't done that yet because sorting out which ones to develop would take me ages. I've got literally thousands of photos and I wouldn't want to clutter my home with them.I also noticed that personalized gifts with photos make a great gift. There are a ton of items you could personalize with photos. A novel idea would be a personalized photo blanket, pillows or bedding. You put your face on a pillow and send it to a loved one so that they can hug you to sleep! I wouldn't go to the extent of plastering my face all over the photo blankets or bedding but I have some really nice photos of sceneries and landscapes and they would look great on bedding.

Allergic Reaction
2007-08-22 05:07:00
I am allergic to Clear Hair Fall Defense shampoo by Unilever. I first used it a few months ago. It was a small bottle for trial and I started getting pimples or acne on my scalp plus a sudden breakout on my face. As I was traveling when I first started using it I thought the skin reaction was due to weather change or the fact that I wasn't drinking enough water. David suggested I should check my shampoo but I dismissed that idea because I've never been allergic to hair products in this way. The worse that could happen was dandruff.I actually like the shampoo because of the smell and it does leave my hair quite bouncy and soft. So I bought a bigger bottle to bring along with me to China. I didn't use it much because I had other left over shampoo from my stay here last year. I thought I'd save it for occasions :) But now I realize that every time I use it, I'd get acne on my scalp. They are many and very painful. I also suddenly get an increase of pimples on my face!At least I kn...

China Shopping and Fashion
2007-08-19 09:58:00
I am not fashion conscious and don't follow trends. I like simple styles and comfortable clothes. I especially like clothes plain colored and without too much embellishment. Because of that, shopping in China is tough.Chinese fashion style is like trying to make up for the years communism before it opened its doors to world trade. They seem to be obsessed with English words emblazoned across t-shirts, gaudy colors, big ugly buttons (oh! they love buttons), sequins and glitter. And there are a lot of imitation, rejects and overrun items sold at small retail outlets all around the city. These shops don't carry a particular brand but a mixture. You will find the oddest brands. Today David bought a pair of khaki pants by Paul Smith. It only cost him RM30. It fit him well and the color was right.I found a nice tank top with some lace at another small shop. I tried them on and they fit well so I bought 2 colors. I came home, tried them on again for David's benefit and he spotted the de...

A Hospital Visit
2007-08-18 15:09:00
Mrs. Shi was hospitalized on Tuesday due to high blood pressure. It hit 250 systolic the night she decided to do some tests at the hospital. The doctor admitted her immediately. We haven't had time to visit her until today. David has been giving me updates from Mr.Shi. We had lunch first then walked around to look for a florist. We decided against fruits because we thought flowers might brighten up her day.I chose some lilies because of their fragrance. I personally prefer white but thought pink would be better for a hospital visit. They cost quite a bit but the whole arrangement was very nice and it is worth it if it is for Mrs. Shi. She has been most kind to us and it was disturbing to hear of her hospitalization. We got there by taxi because parking was difficult. Had a bit of trouble locating the right building but managed somehow. When we got there, we saw Mr.Shi's sister with her. They have been taking turns to keep her company during the day and staying over the nights. Their...

Travel Australia
2007-08-18 04:06:00
There seems to be an increase of interest in traveling to Australia all of a sudden among my friends.First off, Ling is moving to Brisbane. Adeline and Mas are discussing a holiday down under with the kids sans husbands! David's business partner indicated that he and his family would like to travel to Sydney during Chinese New Year next and they want us to join them and take them around.A visit to Sydney is due for us because we haven't seen David's brother and his family for a while. The twins are turning 5 this year and the baby turned 1 last month and we haven't met baby Ethan yet. Audrey, my schoolmate who lives in Sydney was back home in Kuala Lumpur in July and I missed catching up with her. She would be another person I'd like to touch base with.I wouldn't mind a trip south to Melbourne to see Michelle, Paul and their dog, Boo Boo. I've only been to Melbourne once, years ago and I didn't get to explore much as we were there only about 3 days. David's sister lives the...

Max
2007-08-17 07:23:00
This is Max. He's our dog back home and he has been left under the care of my neighbor Mr. Chan.My sister sent me a message yesterday night that he got knocked by a car! Don't worry he's OK.My mom was at my house collecting my mail and she let him out for his walk. He's pretty street smart and comes home after he's satisfied and sniffed out all his usual places. Mom heard a loud bang. The driver who knocked Max spoke to my mom but I still don't know what transpired between them because I haven't spoken to her yet. Skype is not very stable these 2 days. What a scare! But I thank God for helpful neighbors. Mr. Chan was not home so another neighbor offered to send Max to the vet. It was about 8pm at night and most of the vets were closed. In the midst of the panic, Mr. Chan comes home. While the humans were all in a flutter, Max was apparently bleeding from the nose. I feared the worst - internal bleeding. After some clarification from my sister, Max was actually up and about and ...

Something funny about the apartment. If you look at the picture of the kitchen, you will notice that the ceiling has got frosted glass. Inside the panels are florescent tubes so it is very bright at night. I love that in the kitchen. Unfortunately the people who designed this didn't think this through. They've glued the panels together so we can't change to tubes when we need to! The agent says to wait until all or most of the tubes need changing then she will help get someone to cut the glass and change them for me!

that I could fix the wireless connection.David spent the whole afternoon trying to get the wireless router up. Everything in the manual was in Chinese. He called the service provider and also the technician who helped us install the wireless at the old place. He was so frustrated by evening that he sorta threw a tantrum at me! And he gave up!I did offer to help but he wouldn't listen to me. He kept insisting that he knew what to do.Anyway in case you didn't know, I was and still am the IT expert in the family :) I set it up today and am now surfing wirelessly.I can't wait until he comes home so that I can lord it over him just to get even :) Hah!

That was how Kathleen greeted us when we met her to take keys to the new apartment. We also had a surprise guest - a puppy with white socks :) Such a cute girl. I still don't know who she belongs to but she seems to be hanging around the garden area. I fed her some biscuits this morning - she seems to recognize me and she comes when I snap my fingers :)She was really frisky so it was difficult to take a picture of her faceKathleen and the landlord were both there and we could see that they had been hard at work, getting it ready for us to move in. It was all the small things that mattered. Fresh flowers on the dining table, toilet rolls, soap, dish washing cleaner, and some other cleaning stuff for us.They got the satellite tv up, the new washing machine and the landlord even went to the trouble of walking over to the supermarket to get an extension cord so that we could work the microwave. They had an Ayi to clean up the place so that we didn't have to do it ourselves! Attention! - Manufacturer's Recall Notice
2007-08-12 17:37:00
I got this from Bok Jae. I liked it so much I asked him for permission to reproduce it here :)The Maker of all human beings is recalling all units manufactured, regardless of Make or year, due to a serious defect in the primary and central component of the heart. This is due to a malfunction in the original prototype units code named Adam and Eve, resulting in the reproduction of the same defect in all subsequent units. This defect has been technically termed, "Subsequential Internal Non-morality," or more commonly known as S. I. N., as it is primarily expressed. Some other symptoms:1. Loss of direction.2. Foul vocal emissions.3. Amnesia of origin.4. Lack of peace and joy.5. Selfish, or violent behavior.6. Depression or confusion in the mental component.7. Fearfulness.8. Idolatry.9. Rebellion. The Manufacturer , who is neither liable nor at fault for this defect, is providing factory authorized repair and service free of charge to correct this SIN defect. 2007-08-11 18:00:00
If Esther didn't tell me that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was showing at Wanda Cinema I would have found out later but then I would have taken much longer to make it to the cinema here. She mentioned that she and her friends were going to head there to see if they could get tickets and I sorta asked to tag along :) She got tickets - Yeah! And we drove out to meet them.I was hesitant about driving but David was gung ho and said that if we didn't start to explore we'd never get anywhere. So armed with a map (in Chinese!) we planned our route and set off. We realize that driving in China can be easy. The roads are wide, the signs are pretty clear and it is arranged like a grid so if you've got good bearings, you can't get lost. You only have to, sometimes avoid oncoming traffic - taxis overtake indiscriminately; watch out for pedestrians who cross anytime; and have eyes all round your head to look out for cyclists who can come from any direction. Otherwise driving is ...

Driving in Ningbo
2007-08-11 10:09:00
We drove out ourselves for the first time today. David only needed a few reminders to stay on the right side of the road! It was an uneventful drive except for spotting a "bra shop". Very direct in terms of marketing :)We didn't go too far. Ten minutes and we went from the west to the east of the city to our familiar haunt. He was craving for a sandwich from O'Reilly's and I wanted to get a massage.Parking around that area was easy but we had a bit of difficulty with the new meter parking system. There was no coin slot for the machine. We noticed this lady using a card to load the meter and were looking around to see where we could purchase a parking card. I guess the system is very new because there was this man walking around manning the meters and selling the card. The system is like Touch 'N' Go back in Malaysia. Swipe when you park, swipe again when you leave and the cost is deducted from your credit.David went off for his sandwich and I went to the nearby shop for a Thai ...

David's Driving Test
2007-08-11 05:35:00
Last Monday Davi d went for his written driving test. The Chinese road transport department was efficient. Before he could sit for the actual test, he had to go through a series of physical examination to test his eyes, color recognition, coordination and hearing. They carry out the exam it like an assembly line. When you have passed the eye test, they send you to the next counter for the next examination. The "written" test was actually done on the computer. Just click the right answer. Unfortunately the computer was down so he couldn't take the test. On a Friday the same week, he sat for it and failed! He got 83 and the passing mark was 90. He was pretty upset because he felt that some of the questions and answers were wrong in itself and didn't make much sense. He was given a booklet with questions and answers to study and here are some sample questions:-Q? The symbol in the illustration means traffic forbiddenA. (X)Q? While passing the dangerous road along the mountain, one shoul...

My Laptop and I
2007-08-11 04:37:00
I spend a lot of time on my laptop, here in China. Some say it is not healthy to stare at the screen all day and I guess it is bad for my already shortsighted eyes.I realize that if I spend long hours at the computer, I'd have to practice some good habits like resting my eyes, doing some stretches and taking periodic rests away from the computer.I should also make sure that my desk and chair are ergonomically designed or placed to prevent bodily injuries in the long run. When I move to the new apartment next week, I am looking at some computer carts to find a suitable one. I see that there is a laptop rack which may serve my purpose as it is portable and adjustable. All I have is my laptop, loads of wires and peripherals so I guess I won't be needing any LAN Racks. While I was looking at the cart I stumbled upon a drafting table which won't be any use to me but brings back memories of my cousin's room. She was studying interior design then and she had a drafting table. Her whole ro...

We will be here, in Ningbo for winter this year. We should be able to fly back for 2 weeks during Christmas season but otherwise, we'll be enjoying or suffering the cold.I personally prefer the cold to the heat so I am really looking forward to some cooler temperatures. Autumn last year came and went without anyone noticing. It was still warm right up to about end October and we heard that autumn clothes sales were dismal.I wonder what it will be like this year. World weather has been crazy and I would assume that it will be just as warm in autumn this year.I know it used to snow in Ningbo. I saw pictures of Kitty playing in snow when she was much younger. I doubt it will snow unless the weather goes crazy which I hope it won't!We were so cold! It was summer monthsand I wasn't prepared for the weather soI had on 4 layers of clothes! And this was before I got sick :)When I was in Switzerland last year, we went up to the mountains. One of the activities you can do is to go for a hus...

Counting Down the Days
2007-08-10 06:44:00
We are moving apartments next week and I am really looking forward to it. The boxes are out and I have been steadily packing. We don't have much here but somehow the little, little things add up.Our nightmare is having to lug everything down to the ground floor - we are on the 5th floor and there is no lift! I was telling a friend that I wished I could just tip the boxes from the window :)We have a storage room on the ground floor where we keep our bicycles and David has been making good use of it by slowly carrying some paper bags of books and stuff that we don't use everyday.Whenever I get excited about something or a trip, I usually can't sleep at night and wake up early the next morning. Waking up early is definitely a sign that I am either anxious, upset or excited about something or an event because I am not a morning person. Yesterday I slept at 3am and got up this morning at 9.30am!David just informed me that he passed his written driving test and got his China driving li...

I think it is appropriate to celebrate Mala y sians as we are approaching our 50th Independence Day. What better way to celebrate than to publish a coffee table book celebrating the unique diverse ethnicity of Malays ia today. It is a timely reminder to our politicians who sometimes don't understand what it means to be Malaysian. Maybe the faces of the rakyat will show them and tell us who we really are. It is my hope that they will begin to see past race, religion and creed and celebrate with the rakyat who are your everyday people living in a land they call home for generations. Thanks to Steven who is the photographer behind the book launching this month. I know of Steven because he visits my Makanning blog and through the exchange of comments I am getting to know him better.I applaud the many people who are working towards Bangsa Malaysia. I never knew that it would need defining! And kudos to Tricia for the Merdeka Statement.

San Francisco Sightseeing

If there is one place I'd like to visit in USA, it'll be San Francisco .Out of the many places to visit, why choose San Francisco? Sometimes it's just an impression of the place from movies, books, even songs. It's like I have this crazy love for the city of London. I can't explain why I like the city but I do. I am happy just wandering around on the tube to places like Leicester or Trafalgar Square, the National Art Gallery and I love Tate Modern.I hope my impression of San Francisco will turn out like my love for London when I finally visit.I would love to go San Francisco Sigh tseeing and ride on the famous cable car around the city or even walk the world's windiest street - Lombard Street. My dad sent me a postcard of Lombard Street from SF when I was 10. I still have it. I guess that was the memory that stuck to me and hence my wish to travel there. It would be nice to see if Lee Hwa, my mandarin teacher who migrated there will be able to take time off to take me around. Mission Trip To Mongolia
2007-08-03 04:36:00
My pastor and a few church members made a mission trip to Mongolia last year while we were here in China. The plan was for us to join them in Beijing when they stopped over before flying back home. I was more interested to join them for the mission trip but David's work wouldn't allow the time. My pastor has been invited to go again, this year, to preach and to conduct another leadership class. How it all began for me was having Grace speak at our church. I was helping with administration at church on a part time basis when Grace was scheduled to do a presentation on her work in Mongolia. I helped out with transport and got to know her better during our drive back to her temporary apartment in the city. She is a tent maker missionary and have been in Mongolia for a while. So when the invite came for my pastor to teach a leadership class there, Grace was the obvious person to help them plan their trip. She made their trip meaningful and helped give them an insight into the lives of t...

I met Bunny sometime in 2002. He's my friend Michelle's pet rabbit who usually lives under the coffee table during the day. Although I haven't seen him since then, Michelle keeps me updated with pictures. Michelle helped Bunny create his own blog to display his sculptures.Bunny had to be put to sleep last Saturday. He was 9 years old. A very long life for a rabbit. This is my tribute to Bunny and to my friend Michelle. I know Bunny was very much loved and will be sorely missed.
