Hong Cun
2007-07-13 06:21:00 It is Sunday and we had good rest the night before. We slept at 10pm - all tired out after climbing Huangshan. Our driver was waiting at the lobby while we checked out. He said the trip to Hong Cun village will take 3 hours to and fro and another 2 for looking around. He was the one who suggested that we start at 7.30am since our bus to Hangzhou departs at 2.30pm that same day.The drive to Hong Cun took only 30mins!!! We were very unhappy with the driver but we decided not to say anything yet. At the entrance, he took our money to purchase the ticket but never gave us any proof of receipt.Anyway we enjoyed our short tour of Hong Cun and its old houses. There were tons of art students littered around the narrow passageways, and village square, painting, sketching and drawing.I guess the village is famous now because it was where some scenes from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was filmed. An old gazeboBeautiful lotus flowerThe village square with a lakeLooking into garden from doorwayAlm... The Chinese Girl That Climbeb Up a Mountain...
2007-07-10 06:32:00 and came down a mountain! We signed up for a tour to Mt. Huangshan which includes the entrance fee, the transport to and fro, a guide, and a 5.30am wake up call. The person who took this picturealso offered to carry David's backpackfor RMB90 according to the weight!Red caps meant you get a private guide - we were given yellow caps with the larger crowd. The bus ride up to the base of Cloud Valley Temple cable car was a short one but terrifying as I was sitting on the side of the bus where you could see plunging ravines. I kept picturing the bus driving off the cliff side!We alighted and took a short walk past small tourist shops selling souvenirs, backpacks and walking sticks (they costs RMB3 for 2!). We had already stocked up on water and food because everyone knows the higher you go, the costlier the food. There were some confusion at the entrance. Most people wanted to take the easier route - by cable car but the guide said it was closed due to strong winds. Yet, we saw a snaking l... More About: Travel , Chinese , Girl , Climb , Mountain

Traveling By Bus in China
2007-07-09 11:01:00 What a trip! So much to tell - where do I begin? I guess I should start at the beginning...Ningbo Bus Station is clean and organisedUp early on Friday we took a taxi to the Ningbo South Bus Station and waited for the rest. When Esther, Rohith and Punit arrived, we bought our tickets and took the next bus to Hangzhou. It was relatively uneventful and I noticed the driver kept to the speed limit because every time he touched 100kmh, there would be a warning beep that continued until he slowed down.We assumed we'd arrive at the Hangzhou South Bus Station but instead found ourselves at the east station. Then again it didn't matter because we really wanted to be at the West Station to catch the bus to Huangshan. The taxi stand was so long and we didn't really want to wait in the heat - it was already very hot at 9.30am. We walked across the road and hailed our taxis. At the West Station, we only had a short while to wait. The designated coach was not as nice as the one that brought us... Money Online
2007-07-04 20:52:00 You must wonder why? Why all this talk about making money online and going on and on about paid posts?Seriously? You just get sucked in! I mean you start out just wanting to jump on the bandwagon, - everyone is blogging nowadays - to keeping a journal and see it live online which seems like fun. And then you either get hooked on telling everyone about your life story (as if anyone would be interested to read your drivel about what you had for breakfast or what you did or how happy/sad your life is) or hooked on checking out all the little widgets you find on other people's blog so that you can do the same for yours. Then you realize that people earn a living doing this! No. I don't mean checking out little widgets! I mean blogging for money. So you think, maybe you can do the same. And then you now get hooked on learning how to make money online with catch words like, posties, adsense, page rank, alexa ranking which used to be greek to me but now turning me into geek (pardon the rh... A Strong Woman or A Woman of Strength?
2007-07-04 14:44:00 A strong woman works out everyday to keep her body in shape;A woman of strength kneels in prayer to keep her soul in shape.A strong woman isn't afraid of anything;A woman of strength shows courage in spite of her fears.A strong woman won't let anyone get the best of her;A woman of strength gives the best of herself to everyone.A strong woman makes mistakes and avoids the same in the future;A woman of strength realizes that life's mistakes can also be God's blessings and capitalizes on them.A strong woman walks surefootedly;A woman of strength knows God will catch her if she falls.A strong woman wears a look of confidence on her face;A woman of strength wears grace.A strong woman has faith that she is strong enough for the journey;A woman of strength has faith that it is in the journey that she will become strong. In quietness and in confidence shall be your strengthIsaiah 30:15bHe gives power to the weak; and to them who have no might He increases strengthIsaiah 40:29He said unto... I Heart NY
2007-07-04 05:09:00 Do I?I've never really wanted to visit America. Firstly because applying for a visa is a hassle and secondly, the long haul flight makes me cringe. Then again I've had so many friends say that NY is great.I do know I want to visit the Met because I have this thing for art museums. Of course, there's the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, and the shopping! CitySights NY offers a hop on hop off double decker sightseeing bus which is so convenient.I've used the same kind of service in London, Paris and Berlin, and managed to cover most of the highlights of each city. It is flexible, convenient and is designed in such a way that you see all the attractions without having to use other kinds of transportation.Other than double decker bus tours the company offers attraction tickets, daily trips to Boston, Washington DC, and Philadelphia as well as shopping trips to Woodbury Common Outlet. Outlet shopping is supposed to be another NY highlight! My friends, Ling and Lisa were p... More About: Travel , I heart , Heart
Planning To Go To Huangshan
2007-07-03 10:59:00 Our plans are set. We are taking a bus to Hangzhou, then another from Hangzhou to Huangshan . After much research and calling for information we found the best route in the shortest time. The initial shocker was that the bus from Ningbo to Huangshan takes 9 hours! I was going to give my excuses and just go to Shanghai instead. Good thing the rest of the party was equally as adverse to the idea of being stuck in a bus for such a long time.I'm pretty excited although David is a bit apprehensive - well for me, actually. I don't travel very well because I suffer from motion sickness. It started as young as 1 mth old. Mom said I would throw up when she had to drive with me in the car from PJ to KL! I have it much under control now with a load of pills, oils and gadgets but would still feel queasy when traveling on windy roads or in boats (more due to the diesel fumes). It hasn't stopped me from traveling - I just have to be prepared. So this backpacking sorta trip will be another first i... More About: Travel , Planning , Plan

My Residence Permit
2007-07-03 08:49:00 We got our residence permit today. We are officially registered in China! All foreigners have to attend at the nearest police station to fill out a form and show their passports within 30 days of entry. A receipt is given to you and that shall be considered your ID for the duration you reside here.It was really a piece of the photocopied form, filled out in pen by the officer, and torn from the main sheet! The only official looking thing was a red stamp - it was not even signed.I hope I don't accidentally throw it away! More About: Travel , Perm
Travel India
2007-07-03 03:09:00 David was in Mumbai sometime in May and I so wanted to follow him. He said it was not worthwhile since he was there for business and it was only for a night.I've heard a lot about India from friends. There are some amazing sights there as well as good curries and great vegetarian dishes! You can tell that David and I love spicy Indian food.David tried to book Indian hotels from the internet after his client gave him some recommendations. It wasn't a great hotel and it was expensive. He found out later that hotel stay in India is expensive because there are not enough hotels to service the travel industry. So you'd have to do your research well if you want to book a reasonably priced hotel with good and clean facilities. With internet booking, you'd have a selection of hotels to choose from and it is great that this site caters to your need specifically with a filter. You select your preferred choice of cuisine, facility and payment terms.Esther is planning a visit. I'm sure Puni... More About: Travel , Pay Per Post
My First Bus Ride
2007-07-02 10:50:00 We visited Esther at her campus at Nottingham Ningbo University yesterday. We were invited for a lunch of Indian curries and roti prata.Taking a cab to her uni took us about half and hour. The place was deserted because it was summer and most students have already gone home plus it was a Sunday. What a spread! We got there a bit early or rather the guys started cooking a bit late :) but it was worth the wait. Rohith cooked a tangy pork curry and also prawn sambal, Sri Lanka style. Punith who is vegetarian prepared a dhal curry which was really good and another cabbage dish which was an interesting mix of finely chopped vegetable with spice and some nuts. I still haven't got recipes from them but it would be a hard act to follow since all their spices are authentic and imported from India and Sri Lanka! There was spiced rice and roti to go with all the curries, and for dessert, Esther made a bread pudding, Indian style. They were all most hospitable and even refused our offer to help t... More About: Fun , Travel , Food , Friends , Ride
Blogrolling with Friends
2007-06-30 16:46:00 One of the ways to increase links to your blog is requesting to be included in blogrolls. Today I asked to be listed in a blogroll created by Michelle. Or rather started by Michelle and created by Chooi Peng.Click Here To JoinI noticed that a lot of my blog friends have joined and I certainly do not want to miss out :) I see Suzie is already listed and I hope Bokjae has already joined because, like I said, this is one way to increase links to our site. But seriously...have you visited Bokjae?Yes? Good for you - you'll understand what I am writing about. No? Then you should.I've often been inspired by his posts. He writes about his life experiences and I know they are real life stories because I've met Bokjae many times in person, and he has left many me many good impressions of himself. His life is a living testimony to me - of his faithfulness to God - especially in the area of giving care to his wife. I am Wilting!
2007-06-30 16:17:00 I really am. It is about 36C tonight and it feels like we are slowly roasting in an oven.I almost pengsan (Malay word for "faint") today but didn't and David was impressed with me because I swam, cycled and walked up 5 floors back home! A triathlon and an achievement for me.We actually cycled to the gym at noon. Not a great time to try and avoid the sun! And we found out later, that the temperature went up to 39C! I had my sunnies but was hatless. I had to stop to buy a hat because the sun was just too strong. I could feel my head going woozy from time to time but I learned that if you cycle faster, there is a stronger breeze to make me feel less heavy headed.I was expecting it to cool down when we went out with friends for dinner but the temperature indicator in the car still showed 36C. It is never that hot at night in Malaysia . And they say it will get hotter the next few days.I want to go home to tropical and sunny all year long Malaysia, where the temperature don't go beyond... Who Are You Accountable To?
2007-06-30 15:51:00 In the age of independence and rights, who are you accountable to? Or would you rather ask, why should we be accountable?Accountability is about what you do when no one sees you. Are you the sort who abide by rules where there is enforcement or are you accountable, period?I am accountable to my husband because he is the head of my family.I am accountable to my pastors for their guidance.I am accountable to my cell members for they are my extended family.I am accountable to my clients or the people who employ me.I want to be accountable, period!I choose to be accountable to a few of my friends because I value their opinions and I look to them for advise. I also choose to be accountable to them by sharing with them my closest thoughts (even when they are not so nice) in the hope that they can check me and to admonish me, if necessary. I share with them, not wanting them to agree with me completely but with the hope that they would tell me off if I go overboard.I just want to be accoun... More About: Personal
What Kind of a Friend Are You?
2007-06-29 08:58:00 Now that we are on the subject of finding friends...I wonder if you have asked yourselves, what kind of a friend you are? I know most of us have friends in all kinds of category: acquaintances, family, church, friends of friends, colleagues, best friends, close friends and bosom friends (in the words of Anne of Green Gables!).I have quite a few close friends and I believe that we end up close friends after we share our lives intimately, with each other. Close friends also take sh*t from each other and best of all, close friends are honest with one another. They are not afraid to share their thoughts even though some of those thoughts may not sit well with the other (as long as this is done genuinely with love for the other).I think I have lots of close friends because I open myself up and I try to encourage sharing rather than just having conversations. I always try to bring the relationship to the next level. You don't gain a fast friend if you are merely a friend on the surface.C... More About: Friends , Friend
Finding a Friend
2007-06-29 06:59:00 I'm in a new place and a new environment and in search of new friends. I did meet someone new - she was introduced by a friend back home. I have another lead but I haven't done anything about it yet.I recently signed up with a language site to see if there was someone in the same part of the world like me wanting to learn Mandarin. We could perhaps be chat buddies. It is easier to learn a language when you have someone to converse with!By virtue of the same interests, I have made some friends from the blogsphere. I joined a group of people who like to cook and are willing to exchange recipes. I am not quite active yet because I don't have any original recipes to contribute but I've already got a few cooking buddies. It is fun to get to know people.I am thinking to try Friend Finder to see if there are anyone with the same interests to meet up here. I'm sure this is a dating site but you never know - I might just find another person or persons that David and I can befriend. Ningb... More About: Fun , Friends , Pay Per Post
China Post
2007-06-28 16:13:00 I got my first postal mail in China !Esther, my friend here sent me some curry powder by post. For the life of me, I don't know why I didn't pack the curry powders. I have turmeric, chili and coriander powders but not curry. The rest were ready mix sauces. She posted them on Monday afternoon. They should have arrived for us yesterday but when I walked down to check the box - nothing. This morning we got an early morning buzz by the postman - you've got mail!I had to give my address to her in characters and managed to do it via MSN Messenger by copying and pasting from my Chinese dictionary :) Thank goodness for computer and technology! We referred to the curry powder as 'precious commodity' and I was thankful that she was willing to share her stash with me! This coming weekend we are going to her campus where her 2 student friends from India and Sri Lanka are going to teach us to cook some authentic Indian dishes. It is also good to have friends. We are also hoping to go with them... More About: Technology , Travel , Friends , Post

Creative Writing and Random Stuff
2007-06-24 17:03:00 I'd like to think that I've improved my writing skills after blogging consistently, close to a year. I don't know if anyone actually reads my drivel but I write mainly for my own pleasure. I consider this my journal and re-read some posts to remember what I've done. I also read my posts again to check my spelling and grammar - I am a bit obsessive about it!I like to read blogs which are well written. I like it even better when what is written is witty, humorous, and packed with anecdotes. About Every Little Thing is one and I enjoyed her sense of humor. I actually read every word and was rewarded with a punch line more often than not. Lis' site is hot in the MyBlogLog community, and I can understand why.Besides good writing, I am also a fan of Random Good Stuff - the blog that delivers what its title says. I'm a subscriber, and though I don't watch every video but I have found some 'random stuff' which are worth the download time.RGS is for 'when you are bored - Random Pos... We cycled out just before lunch and headed towards Gongyuan Lu. The many times we've passed by this road, we see a lot of people going in through a clock towered gate.Entrance with a clock towerInside was a paved pedestrian only, walkway where we found small shops and stalls selling all sorts of knick knacks, clothes, crafts and jewelery. By this time is was lunch time and getting very hot. We stopped to have Chinese fast food - noodles!Signage at the noodle shop!Eating with your feet up on another chair seems to be a favorite styleAfter satiated, we explored a bit more of the shops and went all the way to the other end. Here we found an entrance to what looked like a park. We noticed a lot of people walking in so we parked our bicycles and joined them.Entrance to the Zhongshan Square or park. My Wedding Gold
2007-06-24 03:50:00 When I got married we had a church ceremony and a traditional tea ceremony. In the morning, David had to come with his entourage and collect me from my mother's house. He had to get past the barricade set up by my friends - and he got through by showing everyone how much he wanted to marry me!My family, aunts, uncles and cousins were all there waiting for the next part - the tea ceremony. We had to kneel to serve Chinese tea, sweetened with red dates to our elders, starting with my mom and followed chronologically by seniority of my aunts and uncles. When tea was served, I was presented with gold jewelery - which had to be worn immediately and David was given a red packet with money. By the time we were done, my neck weighed a ton. It looked quite terrible with my white cheongsam but I was not allowed to take them off. It symbolizes the wealth of my family and I had to enter David's home with it!At David's home the tea ceremony was repeated and I got more jewelery from his paren... He has been there a few nights. It has been so hot lately and the air is still making it stifling. So imagine having to work with fire when the weather is like this, even in the evenings. Every few minutes, he takes a moment and steps away for some air.His finished piece - a horse. Can you see that the mane and its tail has details? This is what I would call fine art :) More About: Glass
In My Previous Life...
2007-06-22 14:03:00 I started out as a civil litigator when I first practiced. My first portfolio was what we termed, "goods sold and delivered". I basically sued for goods sold and delivered but not paid for, for my clients. I was fortunate enough to have this small portfolio when I was only in my 5th month of pupillage but being an eager student, I always wanted more!I was interested to switch to corporate work but I had to prove myself in litigation first. After I was called to the Bar, I was retained as a litigator at the firm where I chambered. Not satisfied with just one portfolio, I asked to try my hand at banking litigation. Since I was only a junior, I was always doing research, and being second chair for my immediate senior. I was rewarded with my own file after 6 months and it was an honor, especially because the claim was just over a million and it also means that the suit goes to the High Court! The thing about doing banking litigation is not so much winning the case but the enforcement of ... 2007-06-22 04:23:00 David's bicycle chain broke and dropped off while we were cycling to Auchan to buy some groceries yesterday night! It was hilarious. I was wondering why he suddenly stopped at the side of the road. It was a good thing that the shop that sold us the bike was nearby and it was still opened when we first passed it.The owner was surprised. He claimed that this is a first!! Now would you believe that? He did repair it for free so at least after sales service is good. And we didn't even need to show a receipt! We have been using melamine mugs for our beverage and it doesn't feel right. David thought we should get ceramic mugs - it feels so much better to drink our coffee from it. So I chose a nice design and put it into the trolley. We also got some plastic containers to store some dry stuff and for leftovers. When we got back this is what we found: a chipped mug and a cracked plastic container. It's Church Camp Time Again
More articles from this author:2007-06-21 20:14:00 I was committee chairperson for our church camp last year and I've been invited to be in the committee again this year. It was a really inspiring experience - working with the committee members. We also had a lot of fun thrown in with the hard work. Last year was also the first year that we organized our very own team building games which were designed by Michael. It involved telematches at the beach, a task using wood and string to create a bridge, and a 5-way tug of war! That was the fun part!As I was also helping out part-time at church, I was the best person to handle the registration. I designed the forms, collected the fees and also arranged the rooming list. It was something short of a nightmare. It was also stressful because the camp venue only had limited rooms so I had to keep counting the number of people who signed up and those who pulled out. This year I will be helping out from afar until I go back to KL. I wonder if the committee will be open to trying online event reg... More About: Personal , Religion , Church , Time , Camp 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
