Both of these stocks are holding up well, and appear to be wanting to move higher soon. PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR DECEMBER 16TH:Despite lowering the key fed funds rate again this week—the 3rd time in as many months— and an “outside the box” plan to free up short-term capital by pooling the resources of other international central banks, the market remained in a sour mood last week. Friday’s .8% rise in the consumer price index—the biggest advance...

HOT STOCK PICK FOR NOVEMBER 21ST:Hot stock pick Core Laboratories (CLB), is dropping back to its rising, 50-day moving average and looking like it wants to come back up for air soon. Core Labs provides reservoir description, production enhancement, and management services to the oil and gas industry worldwide, and it has earnings and relative price strength readings in the high 90’s. It’s in an A rated industry group and it carries an A- accumulation ranking. PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR NOVEMBER 21ST:Thanksgiving spirit was in short supply today as crude oil hit overnight levels of $99.29 a barrel, the dollar continued to fall, and investors, still worried about bad home loans were in a selling mood. In truth, the economic news had been good at the start of the day, with jobless claims well below recession levels, the leading economic indicators showing continued economic strength, and a Univ. of Michigan consumer sentiment index that was revised upward. Perhaps the mark...

PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR NOVEMBER 19TH THRU 23RD:Despite Goldman seeing a $2 trillion cut in lending and the possibility of a recession, FedEx lowering its earnings guidance, and a decline in the nation’s industrial production, the market staged a reversal to the upside Friday, which coincided with triple-witching. As is typical of triple witching, volume was above average across the board on all the indexes. The market’s downturn of late finds both the Dow and S&P 500 indexes below their rising 200-day moving average/support areas, and the Nasdaq Composite, in the process of trying to bounce off of its...

PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR OCTOBER 29TH THROUGH NOVEMBER 2ND:The financial and technology sectors lead the way in Friday’s rally, despite record high, $92-a-barrel oil prices. On the tech side, Microsoft turned in an outstanding earnings report, posting a 32% jump in income and a 27% jump in revenues. Meanwhile, concerns about Countrywide Financial had been frequently voiced as the mortgage credit meltdown became increasingly evident. But Friday the company announced to everyone’s surprise that it expected to turn a profit in the 4th quarter, so this sparked a ...

PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR OCTOBER 24TH:A weak report on existing home sales, much larger losses from Merrill Lynch than had been expected and a strong earnings report from Amazon that nonetheless suggested some concerns about the company’s margins going forward had the market on the ropes in the early going today. However, rumors that the Fed might be considering a discount rate cut, or, as we’ve been mentioning, an actual interes...

PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR OCTOBER 22ND, OCTOBER 26TH:On the 20th anniversary of the 1987 Black Monday market crash, news of Caterpillar’s lowered 2007 outlook, and 3M’s lowering of prices due to its competitors—not to mention the continuing angst of banks exposed to subprime lending— spooked the market. Indeed, Bank of America, Citigroup, Washington Mutual, Wachovia and others continued to cite concerns about upcoming credit-related losses. The flip side of all ...

PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR OCTOBER 17TH:Today the market seemed spooked by the approach of Halloween, with the indexes rallying at the outset, receding later in the day, only to revive themselves in impressive fashion towards the end of the trading day. Behind the scenes, a number of factors were in play, from the spiking price of oil above $88 a barrel to the solid earnings announcements from a number of companies like Intel, Yahoo! and Coca-Cola, to a still struggling real estate market. Looking at the price action on the m...

PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR OCTOBER 15TH THROUGH 19TH:A day after the major market indexes staged a sharp reversal, bullish news that included the fact that retail sales rose .6%-- three times higher than analysts were expecting—had the market indexes recouping some of their lost ground. Other positive reports revealed that wholesale prices jumped on higher food and energy costs and the fact that business inventories rose less than expected. Thus, while the strength of the economy surprised many, it also carried with it a...

PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR OCTOBER 10TH:With Alcoa Aluminum coming up short earnings-wise, Boeing saying its Dreamliner jet will be delayed, and a looming strike at Chrysler, the market drifted lower today—but with little evidence of institutional selling. And, while the Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq continue to reach new highs, the Mid Cap 400 and Small Cap 600 have pulled up just short of their highs and are forming bullish cup and handle patterns, and looking like they want to spring higher. Most telling today was the action of our recent stock picks, many of which continued to move higher despite today’s generally downbeat mood. Thus, we re...

Though Friday’s down day showed stronger volume, and thus, appeared to be a distribution day, the end of any quarter sees a lot of heavy institutional trading, a procedure known as “window dressing.” Indeed, our leading stock picks are act...

PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR SEPTEMBER 26TH:News that General Motors and the United Auto Workers union (UAW) reached a tentative labor agreement had the major market indices trading in positive territory throughout the day. Late in the day, the market rallied on news that Bear Stearns was in serious discussions with outside investors to sell up to a 20% stake in the firm, and this took many of our recent stock picks still higher. Though only the Nasdaq Composite index sported higher volume on the day, the market indexes to a man seem to be forming their own cu...

PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR SEPTEMBER 24TH THROUGH 27TH:Stock s capped one of their best weeks of 2007, as the Nasdaq scrambled 2.7% higher, the S&P 500 and Dow each shot 2.8% higher and the NYSE composite, 3.2% higher. The action occurred on higher volume, a clear indication that institutions were gobbling up shares, given the boost the Federal Reserve gave the economy in turns of a larger-than-expected interest rate cut earlier in the week. All this despite the fact that the dollar hit record lows, and crude oil rose to record levels, which could potentially raise ...

PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR SEPTEMBER 19TH:The news of a larger-than-expected interest rate cut of 50 basis points by the Federal Reserve saw the indexes and leading stocks explode to higher ground on Tuesday. Clearly, the Fed woke up, smelled the coffee and realized that decisive measures were needed to avert the possibility of a recession by early next year. Then, when the consumer price index came in pretty much as expected today, the market followed through on yesterday’s gains with further gains today. The moves on the major market indexes and our stock picks w...

It also offers support, management, and consulting services.PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR SEPTEMBER 17TH THROUGH 21ST:With news of weaker-than-expected industrial production and retail sales released Friday, it now appears that softening home prices, the credit crunch and a weakening job market may be starting to affect consumer spending. This has reinvigorated the belief by many that the Federal Reserve will now actually cut interest rates at its meeting Tuesday by as much as a quarter of a point. The debate now seems to be whether the Fed will cut rates by enough to f...

PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR SEPTEMBER 10TH THROUGH 14TH:A surprisingly week jobs number saw employers cutting 4,000 jobs in August, where a 110,000 gain had been expected, causing the indexes to fall in higher volume for the 2nd time in 3 days. The market’s action saw the major market indexes heading back away from their falling 50-day moving average/resistance areas. Meanwhile, the S&P 500, Small Cap 600 and the Mid Cap 400 found themselves back below their rising 200 day moving a...

HOT STOCK PICKS FOR SEPTEMBER 5TH:Hot stock pick Rostelecom (ROS), is forming a cup and handle formation. It carries earnings and relative price strength readings in the mid to high 90’s, it’s in an A rated industry group and carries a C+ accumulation ranking. PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR SEPTEMBER 5TH:Commentary Today’s down market began with the National Association of Realtors report that its index of pending home sales index fell 12.2% in July to a reading of 89.9 -- the index's lowest level since Sept ember 2001. The index had risen 5% in June. Then, the Fed beige book suggested the housing slump was having a limited negative impact on the economy, and this increased fears that the Fed might not be as likely to cut interest rates at its Sept. 18 meeting as many had thought. Technically, all the major market indexes seem to be doing the ...

Finding Your Own Hot Stock Picks—Without Cramer!
2007-09-04 04:10:00
Jim Cram er ’s stock picks have become world-renowned and world-reviled—depending upon who you talk to—as CNBC’s “Mad Money” TV show has grown in popularity. But the truth is, you can find your own hot stock picks without Cramer, if you want to. It just takes a little more work than propping your feet up in front of the TV and watching Cramer rant and rave to the audience’s delight. True, you may miss out on some of the hysterics, but a fat trading account balance can go a long way towards making up for the lost entertainment value. Your first stop for hot stock picks is to the IBD 100 list that is published in every Monday edition of IBD. IBD ranks its top 100 stocks according to a variety of criteria, the most important of which are earnings and relative price strength readings. No strong earnings, no stock pick. Earnings and especially a track record for earnings growth is what powers stocks higher. Many people buy into a stock’s story, but even “story s...

Paul's Hot Stock Picks For August 29th
2007-08-31 15:00:00
HOT STOCK PICKS FOR AUGUST 29TH:Hot stock pick Garmin (GRMN), which provides global positioning equipment, is setting up in a rather quiet sideways consolidation, and looks ready to break out soon. It boasts earnings and relative price strength readings in the high 90’s, it hails from an industry group rated A and it enjoys a B- institutional accumulation ranking. PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR AUGUST 29TH:In two trading sessions that had even the “experts” scratching their heads, the indexes bounced back and recovered most of the losses they had sustained a scant day earlier. It seems a letter from Fed chief Ben Bernanke to Senator Schumer mentioned he was willing to “act when needed” to get financial institutions over the credit crunch. Was yesterday’s interpretation of the FOMC minutes—a dated view of the economy—an overraction? Perhaps. But in sheer technical terms, the bulls are standing toe-to-toe with the bears because the major indexes recorded about ...

Paul's Hot Stock Picks Brief for August 28th
2007-08-29 01:01:00
Stock picks that seemed to be setting up to break out and/or were actually in the process of breaking out yesterday were in deep retreat today, as a big drop in consumer confidence, and a lack of commitment on the Fed's part to an interest rate cut sent stocks scurrying for cover. Chinese web portal and proverbial big move stock pick Baidu.com (BIDU) plummeted over $12. Transport company Dryships (DRYS) dropped over $5, and stock picks of every size and description headed lower. It seems yesterday's suggestion to treat any stock gains as emphemeral until the depths of the effects of the credit bust are fully known proved prescient. Still, big volatility can yield big profits if you know when to buy bottomed out stocks and just as importantly, when to sell them. And judging by today's price action, our next stock picks will be of the reversal variety. Right now, though, I'd lay low and wait until the market stabilizes, before buying anybody's stock picks. For hot stock picks and...

Paul's Hot Stock Picks Brief for August 27th, 2007
2007-08-28 04:54:00
Only a couple of stock picks bucked today's down day and decided to break out anyway. These included Chinese web portal company, Baidu.com (BIDU), which blasted $4.90 above my buy point on big volume, and shipping company Dryships (DRYS), which moved a little less than $1 above my buy point on good volume. The market today no doubt was reacting to the weak existing home sales report, and to continuing concerns over some $400 billion in buyout deals affected by the continuing credit crunch. Though leading stock picks can break out under adverse conditions, their status can be dicey if the market continues to head the other way, so one would do well to keep abreast of the economic news at this point on a day to day basis. Right now, the market seems most concerned about whether, and to what extent the credit crunch will affect the overall economy, and in turn, corporate earnings, so regard any big moves in our stock picks as ephemeral, until some of these concerns are alleviated.Fo...

The company represented by this stock pick owns and operates dry bulk carriers worldwide. The company's fleet carries various dry bulk commodities, including coal, iron ore, and grains, bauxite, phosphate, fertilizers, and steel products. PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR AUGUST 27TH THRU AUGUST 31ST:With new home sales rising 2.8% and beating forecasts by 45,000 homes, and a revised June new home sales report, a lackluster Friday slowly gained steam —especially after it was learned that the Fed eased collateral rules for banks to use commercial paper as collateral when borrowing from other banks. With Friday’...

ISRG carries earnings and relative price strength readings in the high 90’s, it’s in an A+ rated industry croup and has an average C accumulation ranking. PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR AUGUST 22ND:Stock s rallied today as some renewed mergers and acquisition news hit the wires, and the market hoped for a Fed rate cut. Then too, with stocks at deeply oversold levels, the market seemed due for some sort of upside action anyway. Meanwhile, the lagging Small Cap 600, S&P 500 and Mid Cap 400 indexes finally bounced back above their rising 200-day moving average/support areas on higher volume, indicative of institutional accumulation. Indeed, all of the major market indexes found themselves up by about the same...

Paul's Hot Stock Picks For The Week of August 20th Through 24th
2007-08-19 22:24:00
HOT STOCK PICKS FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 20TH THROUGH 24TH:Hot stock pick L B Foster (FSTR), has been exhibiting strength throughout the market’s storm, and looking like it might want to break out soon. L B Foster manufactures, fabricates, and distributes products for the rail, construction, energy, and utility markets in the United States. It operates in three segments: rail products, construction products, and tubular products. It carries earnings and relative price strength readings in the high 90’s, is in an A- rated industry group, and enjoys a very strong A- institutional accumulation ranking. PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 20TH THROUGH 24TH:As we had been saying might happen, the Fed stepped in earlier than expected to lower the discount interest rate—the rate banks charge one another for emergency overnight funds—to ease the credit crunch brought on by the sub-prime mortgage mess. Though largely a symbolic move, it was the Fed’s way of cal...

HMS Holdings provides cost containment, coordination of benefits, and program integrity services to government healthcare programs in the United States. It carries earnings and relative price strength readings in the mid 90’s, it’s in an industry group rated B- and boasts an A- accumulation ranking. PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR WEDNESDAY AUGUST 15TH:The consumer price index’s matching of Wall Street’s expectations was not enough to overwhelm Wal-Mart’s dismal prognosis for future earnings and the steady drip of negative news coming from the sub prime mortgage sector. Indeed, today’s activity saw the S&P 500 wipe out all of its gains for the year as almost all of the major market indexes undercut their recent lows on higher volume, which is indicative of ...

HOT STOCK PICKS FOR AUGUST 13TH THROUGH 17TH: Hot stock pick H M S Holdings (HMSY) is setting up to perhaps break out soon. Through its subsidiary, Health Management Systems, Inc. HMS Holdings provides cost containment, coordination of benefits, and program integrity services to government healthcare programs in the United States. It carries earnings and relative price strength readings in the mid 90’s, it’s in an industry group rated B- and boasts an A- accumulation ranking. ranking. PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR AUGUST 13TH THROUGH 17TH:The major market indexes managed to reverse themselves Friday and eke out a mostly up week, despite the thrills and chills caused by sub prime mortgage concerns. Indeed, Countrywide Financial’s disclosure that the jumpy mortgage market could threaten its financial picture made for an ugly start Friday, until the Federal Reserve decided to inject another $38 billion on top of Thursday’s 24 billion into the economy. HOT STOCK PICKS FOR AUGUST 8TH: Hot stock pick Dawson Geophysical DWSN) is setting up once again in quiet volume and increasing money flow. Dawson Geophysical provides 2D and 3D onshore seismic data acquisition services in the United States. Dawson carries earnings and relative price strength readings in the mid to high 90’s, it’s in an A+ industry group, and it has a B- accumulation ranking. PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR AUGUST 8TH:A day after volatile trading swung the Dow in a 260- point range, the indices were on the path to normalcy today, and followed through on yesterday’s upside move. The impetus was a Fed reading on the economy that pretty much maintained the status quo on interest rates. Late in the day, speculation that Goldman Sachs would make a negative announcement after the close eliminated most of the market’s gains for awhile, until Goldman denied the rumor. Today’s moves seemed more like the moves the market was making 3 weeks ago—before all the ...

2007-08-05 19:13:00
HOT STOCK PICKS FOR AUGUST 6TH THRU AUGUST 10TH: Hot stock pick Boston Beer (SAM) is nearing its high, and looking pretty frothy at this point. Boston Beer carries earnings and relative price strength readings in the mid 90’s, its industry group is rated B+ and it carries a B+ institutional accumulation ranking.
