Motivation Monday - Rest on the Weekends and Save Some Money Too
2008-01-14 17:31:00 This is the ongoing series that talks about reducing the chances of Monday blues so we can advance in our careers! In personal finance, we focus way too much on saving and investing but never on how we can earn more money in the first place! Part of the reason why we dread Mondays is because we have so much fun over the weekend and we tire ourselves out! I notice that my worst Mondays usually coincide with a jam pack schedule over the weekend. Usually when I have tons of activities over the weekend, I get so tired that I hate waking up Monday morning. From this point on, it’s a downward spiral because I usually have less energy and become impatient with my co-worker, not to mention that I make more mistakes. When was the last time when you feel rejuvenated on Mondays because you relaxed over the weekend? If the answer is never, why not try it next time? For those that didn’t rest by the way, all is not lost. The last thing you want to do is load up on sugar because... More About: Money , Motivation , Rest , Save

Considering Your Primary Home as an Investment
2008-01-11 17:30:00 Like many, I’m hoping to buy a home someday instead of renting an apartment. In fact, my fiancee and I almost bought our first home during March of 2007. We were very excited at the time because it was going to be our first house and we even drove over to see other similar houses in the same neighborhood at 3:00am! However, we decided in the end to not put any offers in because we thought the housing downturn would get drastically worst. Fast forward 9 months, and we are experiencing one of the worst housing slump in US history. Being in California, our decision to hold off on buying a house saved us at least $50,000 and might turn into $100,000-$150,000 when it is all said and done. One side of me is relieved because of the fact that I didn’t buy the house yet, but another side of me really want to live in a nice house that I can call my own. Should I look at the house as an investment? Or should I forget about the ups and downs of my potential house price and be... More About: Investment , Home , Primary
What’s Wrong With Not Spending Much
2008-01-09 17:30:00 My fiancee is in Las Vegas for the CES 2007 trade show held once a year for companies to showcase new consumer electronics. Not only do I not get to go, I have to be stuck home alone! Usually when I am alone, I end up eating out. However, since I wanted to be a good example to taking action and start saving, I haven’t eaten out yet!! Since Sunday when she left for the show, I have been driving everyday from work to cook and eat lunch and dinner at home. On top of that, I haven’t used one extra cent other than the gas that I use for transportation! For whatever reason, sometimes I feel like I really need to spend some money. Either I had to buy something, or I at least had to spend $4 on a cup of Starbucks. It almost doesn’t seem like it mattered what it was, as long as it was something I decide to spend money on. This time however, I don’t have that feeling at all. I’m happy spending nothing, and I’m happy because I’m saving. Perhap... More About: Spending , Wrong
Do Not Wait and Start Saving Immediately
2008-01-08 17:30:00 In life, we need to take action. Today, I need everyone to start saving immediately if you haven’t yet. How many of us have always thought about saving but think that we can always do it tomorrow? We always think that we can wait, but you will be waiting forever to be financially free too. We can’t wait until we buy the next big screen TV but we can always wait to setup your 401k accounts. We can’t wait to go on a vacation but we can always wait to pay down our mortgages. We can’t wait to get rich quick but we can always wait to learn how to get rich through time. We can’t wait to leave work but we can always wait to learn how to increase our wealth. We can’t wait for early retirement but we will have to wait. If it is you, change. If you want to feel financially secure, save. If you give yourself excuses, stop. Trim down your spending and start saving. Otherwise, I guarantee you will regret it. ---Related Articles at Personal Finance... More About: Start , Saving , Wait
Motivation Monday - Take Action and Get Things Done
2008-01-07 17:30:00 One of the reasons why we don’t like to go to work is because there seems to be so much we need to do. Endless deadlines that need to be met and we just want to throw our hands up and say “That’s it! I give up!”. Sometimes I feel very unmotivated because it doesn’t seem like I will ever get everything done on time as there are just so many tasks piled up. However, I realized that it is likely because I don’t do everything right away. This “I will get to it later” attitude is the root cause of this problem. As I wait for everything to pile up, I become inefficient because part of my energy is spent worrying about how to complete the tasks instead of actually doing it. I know I’m not alone because people I know always wait till the last minute to finish projects. For example, if the deadline is this Friday, most people will do it late Thursday night (if not on Friday) even if the task takes 15 minutes. This way of doing thin... My 2007 Budget Analysis
2008-01-04 17:30:00 Every year, I analyze my spending during the past year to spot irrational behavior and see where my money went. By doing this, I’m able to help myself find ways to save more in the future because I’m aware of where I like to slurge. I also use this opportunity to improve my budget for the next year by readjusting the categories to better track spending effectively. I’m sure the benefits of analyzing spending are pretty obvious so let’s dive into the actual charts. Housing expense is a necessity and its pretty stable so it is nothing exciting. Even though it’s steadily going up, it is still relatively cheap compared to other places that I am thinking about moving to. Food expense is quite steady at roughly $150 - $200 a month. It is very interesting to note that the three big months (February, July and December) are all related to having a very nice dinner as follows: February - Valentine’s Day July - Fiancee’s Birthday December - Ch... Increase Your 401k Contribution Rate During the Beginning of the Year!
2008-01-03 17:30:00 Most people look at their 401k and examine how much they have contributed during year end. We know this because most people talk about it during November and December when everything is set and done. Some think a little further ahead and try to plan for the next 12 months during year end but unfortunately most don’t. Therefore, I suggestion today that we all log into our 401k account to increase our contribution rate! The beginning of the year is a great time to increase our contribution rate because the change will be reflected the entire year. Unless you are already at the contribution maximum, I suggest contributing an additional 2% this year. 2% won’t be much off each paycheck, especially since taxes won’t be charged immediately on the 2%. Furthermore, 2% is a lot of money if you keep on contributing your career earnings into it, especially since compound interest will work in our favor through the years. Speaking of 401k contribution rates, many plans o... More About: Contribution , Year , Rate
Stocks Fall Again To Start The Year
2008-01-02 19:07:00 What a start to the 2008 investing year! It’s the first day of the year and we are already 200 points down from last year. I’m sure most of us are looking forward hoping for a good year with growing our retirement savings so news like this is not pleasant! However, keep in mind that those who prosper from the stock market are either: Lucky - Some people happen to buy certain stocks that skyrocket. You hear about the people that bought General Electric 30 years ago or the person who got rich owning Microsoft. It happens to many people but it doesn’t mean you can repeat what others have done if you just follow the steps they took. Patient - These people buy when the market is down. They hang on to the stocks they buy because their view is long term. They know that good companies can weather the storm and come out of bad times even stronger than before. This is a more sensible approach and one we recommend here at Money Ning because this method is a pro... More About: Stocks , Start , Fall , Year

Motivation Monday - Rewarding Ourselves For Accomplishments
2007-12-31 17:30:00 This is developing into a Monday series where I will discuss motivation and inspiration to counter our Monday blues! Hopefully, this will help everyone start off the week right. Let me know what you think so I can continue to improve this blog. When was the last time you bought something on impulse? Next time you really want to get something, why don’t you try to set it up as a reward? By doing this, you can motivate yourself to accomplish that task while giving yourself time to think about whether you really want it at all. This past weekend, I really wanted a golf range finder just because my colleague bought one for my boss. Instantly, I felt like I had to have one. The device just felt like it was the next most important thing that I needed to get to improve my game. I chatted with my friend in Canada and of course he has to tell me that he’s always had one and would highly recommend it. Even though the device seemed like a must-have, it wasn’t a ... Wash Sale Rule
2007-12-28 17:30:00 Yesterday, I talked about selling losing stocks so we can realize a capital loss to reduce taxes. However, we cannot just sell the stocks and buy them back just to get the tax benefits because it will violate the wash sale rule. This rule prevents us from taking a tax loss on a security sale if we bought the same or substantially identical stock 30 days before or 30 days after the sale. If you do end up buying the stock back within 30 days however, the loss can be applied to the cost basis of the purchase. Let me illustrate. Remember the ETrade (ETFC) that I mentioned about yesterday? Let’s say I sold all my shares at $4 per share after reading the article from this blog for a loss of $12,000 and I bought 1000 shares back at $3.80 today. The wash rule disallows me to take the original $12,000 tax loss but I can add the original $12,000 loss to my new cost basis, making the final cost basis of $15,800. In my example, I have used the same stock. However, buying any substan... More About: Sale , Wash , Rule
Last Chance to Plan for 2007 Capital Gain Taxes
2007-12-27 17:30:00 Today and tomorrow Next Monday is the last day to sell losing investments because you can deduct taxes from it. In the US, we are taxed on net capital gains for the year, which means that we should sell stocks that we have a capital lost in to offset all the capital gains, minimizing taxes. The government encourages this in fact, because not only can we balance it just right so we don’t pay ANY taxes for stocks we made money on, we can even get tax credit for a realized capital loss! Let me illustrate in the following example of what I mean. Say in 2007, I bought $7,000 worth of Diamond Offshore (DO) and $15,000 worth of ETrade (ETFC). Now, DO is worth $15,000 so I decided to sell it, making $8,000 on the investment. However, ETFC is only worth $3,000. If I don’t sell ETrade, it means that I will have to pay taxes on the $8,000 investment. However, if I sell all my shares of ETrade, I would’ve realized $12,000 of capital lost. The net effect of both my investments will mean th... More About: Taxes , Chance , Plan , Capital , Capital Gain
Motivation Monday - Do You Have to Work Today?
2007-12-24 17:30:00 How many of us have to work today and feel really bad? How many of us are complaining that someone we know doesn’t have to work the same time we are grinding away? Why do we even care what other people have or don’t have to do? I’m sure this won’t make the rest of us feel much better, but I’m working right now while my fiancee is sleeping in bed. If we think about it, our work day isn’t better or worst no matter what our friends are doing. Some of them may be playing golf now, while some evil friends might even call you during the day to rub it in. However, these are the times where our true character shows! Think of the positive side. Whether we are home or at work, we would be reading Money Ning anyway right? :) In addition, we won’t be spending any money while we are working! On another note, would anyone be working that hard today anyway? Let’s spend some time to chat with our colleagues and get to know them. Th... More About: Work , Motivation , Today , Monday

Investing in 2008
2007-12-21 17:30:00 Today’s post is kindly submitted from Steve @ Apex Credit Cards. Apex Credit Cards is a site that provides credit card offers, comparison and reviews. Your Hard-Earned Dollar in 2008 So, it is well-known that the U.S. economy has been weak for most, if not all of 2007. The housing market slump continues to result in subprime defaults, credit is extremely hard to come by, the dollar is falling against the euro, and oil prices have recently hit an all-time high. What can we expect in 2008? Will next year be any better than 2007? No one can say for certain, however there are some indications here and there that point toward an improved U.S. economy in 2008. Housing and Credit Market Home prices throughout the nation are down 4.2%. Some sources are predicting an average home price drop of 5.7% in 2008. If that proves to be the case, the real estate market will be in the worst shape it has been in several decades. As if that isn’t enough, foreclosures are expected t... More About: Investing
Someone Forced Me to Throw Away $50
2007-12-20 17:30:00 I’m very bummed out because I lost $50 yesterday. I was in the Toronto airport coming back to California when I bought some ice wine for my colleagues in the duty free shop. I contemplated for a long time whether I should make the purchase because the ice wines were pretty expensive but I reckon that it’s the holidays and I should be nice to people who’ve helped me at work all year! So, cash in hand to give to the cashier and off the bottle goes into my hand carry. When I got to Las Vegas where my connecting flight was, I was told that I needed to go to another terminals where I had to go through the security gate! Since I had a lot of time, this didn’t bother me one bit even though I had to find the shuttle (it wasn’t that easy since there were no signs), wait 15 minutes and then get to the main terminal where my next flight was. After the usual huge lineup at the security checkpoint, I was flagged by the officer going through the gates because th... More About: Forced , Throw , Some
Today is ETrade’s Customer Appreciation Day
2007-12-19 16:57:00 As you have probably heard, ETrade is having a customer appreciation day where they are waiving all trading commissions. So, I logged into my account just now and realized that I didn’t really want to buy or sell any securities. I reminded myself that I shouldn’t trade a stock or fund just because the commissions are free. My investments are based on research and planning, so the $10 dollars that each trade saves me shouldn’t change that philosophy. If you are also a ETrade customer, you shouldn’t trade more frequently today just because of this promotion offer. Those that worry about commissions should look into companies that offer free trading like Zecco. The bottom line is that we shouldn’t be impulsive with our investment decisions (and financial decisions) in general. Don’t let a promotional offer lure us into making one. Side note: I’m flying back to California today so Money Ning should return to regular scheduled programming -... More About: Customer , Today , Appreciation , Reci
Making the Decision to Improve Our Standard of Living by Spending More
2007-12-18 17:30:00 When is it appropriate to spend more money to improve our standard of living? This is a question that I’ve asked myself numerous times after I started living on my own a few years ago. After much discussion with my soon-to-be wife, we finally decided to move out of our current one bedroom apartment once Emma and I get married. In reality, we would like to move before our big day but we felt that it would be easier for our mental health to space out the stress!Currently, I live in a one bedroom apartment with a monthly rent of $1045 USD. Although the landlord increased our rent significantly from $920 less than one year ago, it is still much lower than similar sized units in the area. All would be great if only I actually liked living in this place! Unfortunately, much of the reason why I picked the city and apartment complex I live in is because of the cost. For months now, I keep trying to convince myself that living in a place I’m not totally comfortable in is... More About: Living , Standard , Spending , Decision , Improve
Motivation Monday - The Power of Optimism
2007-12-17 17:30:00 Focusing on work during the holidays is extremely hard. In fact, I heard from the radio that one in three people admit that they are thinking about Christmas more than work in December. With all the shopping lists and parties to worry about, there just doesn’t seem to be any space to fit work in especially since it is Monday morning! Hang in there my friends; there is still one more week before it is the week of Christmas. Feel happy because the holidays are coming, but don’t get lazy as the days off draws near. Christmas Is a Time of Giving At Our Company
2007-12-15 02:15:00 My boss is really generous around Christmas as he would give us 3 different Christmas gifts. I want to use this post as a thank you to his generosity! He would treat all his employees and one family member one night of free accommodation the night of our annual Christmas party. Usually how it works is that we would all drive to a hotel or resort (1-2 hour from our office) one Saturday in December and have a Christmas dinner/party. After the celebration, we could just go to our hotel room which makes everyone participating more free to drink alcohol. This makes the party much more fun because everyone is more relaxed as no one needs to worry about driving late at night. For the week between Christmas and New Year’s, employees at my company are allowed to take a week of non-paid vacation even if they do not have enough vacation days. This is a no questions asked typed of vacation so we can take off as we need/want. Every year, my boss gives each employee a $100 gift certi... More About: Company , Time , Giving
Be Frugal and Use Public Transportation
2007-12-13 17:30:00 I’m in Canada and my grandfather is doing better now even though he will still be in intensive care for another few weeks. It is a sign of relief for the whole family and hopefully it’s nothing but good news from here on out. Every day, we have a 35 km (approximately 22 miles) ride to the hospital. We did some calculations and we are literally spending $20 on gas (our car in Canada still wastes tons of gas) and another $19 on parking every single day. Since it is a full day event, we leave approximately 9am and leave around 5pm. So the rush hour traffic was not helping make it any faster nor cheaper! Today, we decided to take the subway from now on. We figured that the expense would be as follows considering that we have to drive to the subway station: $2 gas for driving to the subway station $5 parking (to park our car there) $16.50 (two way fare for 3 people) This means that we will save $15.50 per day, not to mention that we don’t have to waste ou... Money is Not Everything
2007-12-10 17:30:00 My grandfather being in the hospital really puts things into perspective for me. No matter how wealthy we are, it means nothing if we aren’t healthy. Many people, including myself, work so hard at our jobs. We miss lunches, and sometimes sleep just to advance our career a little more. We work late on weekdays and on weekends because we think we can make more money that way. Although I can tell you first hand that the financial reward is there, our health definitely suffers. Whether it’s the extra stress we put on our bodies or the lack of healthy food we consume, it takes a toll on our bodies over time. When we are young, we don’t feel it but we are slowly and surely degrading our health. We might end up being rich, but we are more likely to end up being sick. By overworking, we are also likely neglecting our family and friends. Unfortunately, there is only 24 hours in a day. Therefore, we are deciding how best to use our time every minute of our ... Christmas is Coming So Time for Wealthy Secret Santa
More articles from this author:2007-12-05 17:30:00 The holiday season is coming and our company asked us to participate in the annual Secret Santa event. Secret Santa for those who aren’t familiar is a game where each person buys a gift for another person. Everyone picks a person to buy the gift for by drawing the name out of a hat and the recipient of the gift is never supposed to know who the gift came from. The idea of this is very good, but the last few years have seen the price limit of gifts skyrocket. Every year, we say that the rules are to buy a gift that falls in the $10 - $15 range. This is good because it keeps the dollar amount low so everyone can concentrate on the fun spirit of the game instead of thinking that it will break his/her wallet. Last few years though, things have changed. There were some people that literally buy gifts that must be worth at least $100 dollars. Some of you might think that this is fine if the person wants to spend the money but what ends up happening is that everyone else is pre...
