Balance Our Diet Like Diversifying Our Portfolio!
2007-09-06 17:11:00
When I was talking about the Relationship of McDonalds’ McChicken, Personal Finance, and Me last week, Neville mentioned that food was like investing because it’s nice to have a balance portfolio. There is so much wisdom behind this statement that I want to bring this out to discuss on a post. Even though many people don’t follow this, a healthy and balance diet, as we all know, is a way for us to live a happy and long life. This is the exact same thing for investing because a healthy and balance portfolio provides the diversity that we need to become financially free. As with a balance diet, a diversified stock portfolio is very hard to maintain. There is always a temptation to put all our money into stocks that are in the hot sectors because they are performing the best, but it is very dangerous in reality because any sector can be crushed and our money will go with it. Another very common way people become undiversified is with their company stock. I understand that...

Why We Should Say No to Macy’s Discount Offer
2007-09-05 17:19:00
Labor day has just passed and Macy’s offered 10 – 15% off any purchase if the store branded credit card was used. Obviously, it was a great way to get everyone to sign up the credit card because I heard my aunt and fiancée talking about the sale and also everyone lining up at the cash register. Normally, many of us will immediately sign up for the credit card because of the savings, but some of us should really say no. Payment Options Are Not As Flexible It’s not the discount that is bad (although buying something at a discount really means spending less money instead of saving money like most people want to believe), but rather the store branded credit card. I remember signing up for a credit card from a clothing store Express because they offered 15% off my first purchase. 30 days later when it came time to pay the credit card, I realized that the only option to pay the balance was through the phone, which had a service charge of $5. So for a $50 purchase, I was charge...

What to Do When We Miss Our Chance for Movies and How it Applies Gaining We
2007-09-03 18:03:00
Transformers were part of my life growing up as Google was to some of you. When the movie about those beloved robots came out 2 months ago, I was really excited. However, since I hold a doctorate degree in procrastination, I put it off until last week. Thrilled as I was that day, we got to the movie theater and found out that the place no lower show the movie. Disappointed, I thought to myself that this time, procrastinating cost me the chance to see Transformers at the movie theater. Most of the time however, it costs me money. By writing out the alternatives to watching Transformers, I should be able to find similarities to help me financially so here goes. 1. Don’t Give Up If Our First Choice Does Not Give Us the Desired Result Actually, I believe there are some movie theaters that are still showing Transformers. Some of the bigger movie complexes show many movies at once and will still show older movies. My job is to find them and go immediately before no movie theatre...

8 Ways To Function Like Normal When Our Bank’s Website Goes Down
2007-08-31 17:25:00
I would never think that a big financial institution’s website would go down in this day and age but wellsfargo.com was inaccessible for a couple hours on Friday August 24, 2007. I remember that I wanted to make sure I had enough money in my checking account before I authorize payment on my credit card that day and wasn’t able to do it because I could not get on. This reminds me not to take anything for granted, and to always have a backup plan. Here are some alternatives to getting what we need when we cannot access our bank online. To Get Some Cash 1. Go to the grocery store or any other place that offer cash back when we use our debit cards. The rest is simple, buy something and get the cash we need. 2. We can get cash at an ATM machine. This is a no-brainer but even if the bank’s ATM machine is down, other institution’s ATM machines will allow us to withdraw money. Just don’t make this a habit because fees from both the bank that owns the ATM machine and probably ...

Relationship of McDonalds’ McChicken, Personal Finance, and Me
2007-08-30 17:13:00
Have you ever felt like something was more important to you after you couldn’t have it anymore? On Tuesday, I watch CNBC’s one hour special on the rise of McDonalds and it made me really want to go there for dinner since I grew up loving this particular fast food restaurant. I waited patiently for my fiancée to come home and we set out to one of the McDonalds that were close to our house. When we got there, there was a sign that says: The dining area is being renovated, please use the drive thru. I was really upset to see the sign since I wasted my gas and time to get there and at this point I was determined to have my McChicken sandwich. I decided that I would drive along the road I was on until I found another McDonalds as I could not think of where another one would be. Fortunately, I was able to find another one 5 minutes later and had a very happy meal (no pun intended) but I could have wasted much, much more gas doing this. For the rest of this article, I will call...

Numerous Apartment Rent Increases Are Really Getting On My Nerves
2007-08-29 17:09:00
I’m sure many of us are familiar with rent increases and I understand that this is necessary because the maintenance, cost of land go up through time. However, I got a letter a letter that has similar language as the following 3 times in the last 13 months. … As a result, this letter constitutes written notice the rent due for Apartment 15 will increase from $995.00 to $1,045.00 per month effective October 1, 2007… My 12 month lease expired May of 2006 and that’s when the “fun” started. Around July or so, I received the first letter for a rent increase, then again in November and now one more time this month. Month Rent Price Increase May 2006 $905 - August 2006 $945 $40 Feb 2007 $995 $50 August 2007 $1045 $50 I would appreciate it if they just tell me once a year that the rent is increasing but it really bugs me when they keep doing this. Although I’m not happy about the monthly rent I need to pay, I’m frustrated because it is annoying and not becaus...

Compare Our 401k Balances With Others In America
2007-08-28 17:14:00
US News has a very interesting article that shows various interesting statistics on account balances America ns hold in his/her 401k accounts. If you are one of those people that always wonder how your 401k nest egg compares to others in the country, this article is for you. First, here’s the median account balance separated by salary ranges for people in the 20s. Salary Range Median Account Balan ce $20,000-$40,000 $6,719 $40,000-$60,000 $16,393 $60,000-$80,000 $39,383 $80,000-$100,000 $56,194 More than $100,000 $57,794 I’m very surprised by this because I cannot believe the median account balance is so high! I know data are based on facts, but it’s hard for me to imagine that someone in their 20s earning $20,000 - $40,000 a year has ON AVERAGE $6,700 in their 401k. Now, let’s look at the average 401k asset allocation for people in their 30s. Type of Investment Share of Account Balance Equity funds 57.90% Balanced funds 1...

Is Sport Clips a Scam Or Is It Really Just Good Marketing?
2007-08-27 17:13:00
I am one of those people that go everywhere to get my haircut done. Instead of going to a salon and staying with the same hair stylist that I am comfortable with, I choose where I get my haircut because of promotions, coupons, availability. Over the weekend, I went to get a haircut from Sport Clips Haircuts - a place that is tailored for men. When I sat down, this is basically the conversation that took place. Stylist: Hi, my name is X, how are you doing? MoneyNing: Doing great, nice to meet you. Stylist: Is this your first time here? MoneyNing: Yup. Stylist: Great, let me upgrade you to our MVP package. MoneyNing: What’s that? Stylist: It includes your standard haircut and a massaging shampoo, steamed towel, conditioner, and a neck and shoulder massage. I did not want the extra service that cost more money since I came here for a haircut. If I wanted a massage, I would go somewhere else. I didn’t decline the offer since I didn’t want to upset him before he took my haircut...

Buy On The Market Dip and Buy At The Market Top
2007-08-25 21:43:00
I’ve read countless advices (in fact I’ve written some myself) that tells us not to panic and when the market comes down.  The articles usually discusses the benefits of actually buying more when it’s down, telling us that we should think of it as something going on sale.  Although these are great advices, it’s quite hard to follow! How can anyone know that the market is not going to go down further for the next few weeks?  Do you buy when the Dow went from 14,000.41 to 13,378.87 on July 25?  Surely that’s not panicking but those that bought on the 25th would have lost more money since it went down all the way to 12,845.78 on Aug 16. Do you buy at this point?  Who can say for sure that the Dow wasn’t going to go down to 12,000 or even 11,000?  I’m sure some of you will think that it wasn’t going down that far because the Fed did this and did that.  I can only say that many of us aren’t as smart as those people.  If it was...

Wells Fargo Online Website is Down
2007-08-24 18:24:00
I just want to let everyone that is frustrated know that the Well s Fargo Online Website is Down right now.  I know it doesn’t give anyone comfort in knowing this but at least we know it’s not our connection that is at fault.  No one knows exactly what is wrong yet (not even Wells Fargo) but they are working on fixing the issue. I bet this is the same problem they had on Monday when the website was down for one day.  It seems like there is a major problem in Well Fargo’s servers right now so hang on tight and let them do their debugging / fixing. In the mean time, everyone who calls their technical support line is probably only going to get the usual “Sorry for the inconvenience but we are working hard to troubleshoot the problem and it will be up soon” type of message after you wait an hour on the phone. If you need money in the mean time, try to go to the branch and talk to them to see what options you have.  One thing you can do is buy something c...
I Could Use Someone Else’s Credit Card to Buy My Groceries
2007-08-24 17:13:00
My fiancée and I talked about the fact that we can probably use each other’s credit cards to purchase things without getting caught. We realized that many times than not, we aren’t asked to show our IDs when we use our credit cards. We decided to brainstorm where we have bought something using our credit cards without showing our ID and came up with this list. • Anything online • Restaurants • Groceries via self checkout • Gas Stations • Drug store • Convenient stores • Coffee • Tons of entertainment venues * note that this is based in United States since some other countries handle credit cards very differently We concluded that we can live our lives with someone else’s credit card without ever showing our ID. Even without all the online stuff because we can virtually get anything over the internet nowadays, we can still get food, gas, coffee, and have fun with someone else’s credit card without fear! Now, what about the places that asks you for ID? • ...

How Coupons Does Not Save Me Money
2007-08-23 17:14:00
Yesterday, I talked about buying newspapers because of the coupons. Today, I want to take the other side of the argument because coupons can sometimes backfire! I received two email offers today from Borders and Golfsmith and using either of them will not save me money! Sometimes I feel like people think they are making money by using discount coupons while the reality is that they are just using less money with it. Let’s take a look at the coupons I received through email more closely. Ahh. Great coupon for 20% off one item from borders.com! People however might not realize that Amazon.com might sell the same item at more than 20% off the price borders.com sells it at. This is an interesting coupon from Golf Smith because the offer is very tempting! Let’s talk about this for a second because if the email did not pop up in my inbox, I wouldn’t be tempted to buy anything. The coupon is valid for items over $50, meaning that I might end up spending $50 that ...

Buying Newspapers Save Me Money Each Week
2007-08-22 17:33:00
Over the weekend, my fiancee bought newspapers home and my first reaction was.. “Why”? I can find all the material that newspaper offers online and it is all free. Most of my memories for newspapers were developed when I was forced to read it at a young age. Although it probably helped me, I remember newspaper publications as something that was boring and also something that made my hands dirty. However, my fiancee quickly batted some sense in me and told me that she was trying to save us money! She told me that the Sunday paper has tons of coupons that we can save money with. It also had lots of advertisements about different things on sale. This week, we found coupons for: Black Angus for $14.99 for the two of us Save $0.55 for any Horizon Organic products (we sometimes buy their milk when it is on sale) Save $0.50 on any 5 Campbell’s Condensed Chicken Noodle or Tomato Soups Save $0.50 on 2 Campbell’s Select Soup can Save $0.75 on any 2 V8 Splash Save...

Bankrate’s Top 10 Money Drains and Money Ning’s 10 Reactions
2007-08-21 17:09:00
I just read this article at bankrate.com dated 7/23/2007 and titled “Top 10 money drains“. This just proves that personal finance articles are timeless because we can still learn so much from it after 29 days of it being online! 1. “We spend $360 with coffee per year” – We can make it ourselves and save tons of money! Check out my article of running our own Starbucks! 2. “Pack-a-day smokers spend $1,660 a year” – Many of us need to just stop smoking. We might even want to buy their stock if we want to profit from it. I own shares of Altria (symbol MO) and it has been a good winner for me. 3. “Buying two beers per day adds up to $3,650 per year” – In fact, my fiancée and I went to recycle our bottles and saw someone who recycled 500 cans of beer! He had so many cans that even the person that works at the recycle facility was amazed. 4. “One bottle of water per day cost $365 per year” – People who buy bottled wa...

8 Not So Usual But Practical Pointers About Saving Money Going Back to Scho
2007-08-20 19:08:00
Summer holiday is ending soon and back to school season is approaching! For kids, this is a dreadful time because their holiday is about to end. For parents, it often means having to spend a bunch of money. To say the least, September is not often the best month when it comes to savings. I’ve jog down a few things below for us to think about while getting your kids through school. Let me know what you think. Computer - If your child is going to university, one of the first suggestions is having a laptop. This can often get extremely expensive and the cost is only high because your child is telling you what he/she wants instead of what he/she needs. Don’t get me wrong, the laptop is the number one essential tool to get through school these days but you do not need the highest end graphics card and a huge LCD display to finish the math assignment. Try to look for value by comparing different brands. For more help, you might want to talk to the representatives at best buy o...

I Spend More Money When I am Bored
2007-08-18 16:58:00
It is 7:30am on a Saturday morning and I’m sitting here thinking to myself how I’m going to spend my morning (and rest of the day, rest of the weekend). I realized that most of the activities I can think of to kill time requires money (no surprise). I never really thought about it this way, but it dawned on me as I’m typing that I don’t spend as much money when I’m busy. Lately, my schedule can be illustrated below. Since I don’t have time to do anything else in my life, there’s not really any chances for me to spend money. Today though, I find myself with free time and I don’t know what to do with it. I’m sure there are some of you that have a sort of “go to activity” when you have time, but I do not. So now I’m a little stuck, thinking about how I can spend my two relaxing days without burning a hole in my pocket.I can go to the library, but I can’t possibly do this the whole day. I can also wind...

Why We Shouldn’t Be Careless With Automatic Bill Pay and Why The Pentagon
2007-08-17 17:25:00
I read an article from bloomberg.com that the Penta gon has paid a small South Carolina part supplier $20.5 million dollars in freight cost over the last 6 years and it was overlooked because they have an auto-payment system that pays suppliers as long as the orders are deemed high priority. My first reaction was stated in the second half of the title “Why doesn’t the Pentagon use FedEx and ask the suppliers to use their account for shipping“? As I thought about this more, all of these automatic bill pay that I’m enrolled in is basically the same thing as Pentagon’s auto-payment system. Right now, I’m basically automatically paying off my credit card bills, and to be honest, I don’t look at every line of every statement ever since everything became electronic and automatic. Could someone overcharge me for something? Of course they can. Will it get through without me noticing it at this point? Possibly. I’m sure a $20.5 million pack of bubble gum will not ...

Declining Market Mentality for Personal Finance Blog Readers
2007-08-16 19:22:00
Most of us really do not earn a living buying and selling stocks. However, it is understandable that many of us are a little upset when we look at our stock market portfolio because of the recent decline of our stock prices. For example, my stock portfolio is basically down $10,000 from an all time high one month ago. This roughly means that I worked for nothing for the last couple months since my after tax income is much less than $10,000. I’m not particular worried though, because the stock market has been good for me. For me, stocks are a long term growth story as opposed to a short term one. Sure, the stock market has been declining pretty sharply for the last month. However, if we take a 10 year average of stock market prices, the long term up trend is very apparent. I’m no expert in stocks. Like most of us, I just try to invest in the stock market because I want to have a good life down the road. I understand that the stock market is not going to make me rich overn...

How We Figure Out If An Email is Actually Sent From Our Bank
2007-08-15 17:26:00
I got an email that says Bank of America requires me to update my account information and therefore need me to log into my online account. In the email, it also has a link for me to click on where I would be able to get straight to the login page. After reading it, the email definitely did not look legitimate so I trashed it. The event triggered me to write this post because there is one way to help figure out if an email is from a legitimate source called email headers (or message headers). Every email is sent with this header information which contains where it came from, which servers, date and time and also some information that can help us determine the authenticity of an email. One of the schemes people like to use is to fake a “from” address. For example, the Bank of America example had an email address of onlinebanking@alert.bankofamerica.com to trick you into thinking that it actually came from the bank. However, there is a return path inside the header whi...

Blogging About Personal Finance Changes The Way We Think and Use Money
2007-08-14 17:20:00
A few things happened on Sunday that made me realized the big difference of the way I treat my money since starting to write on my personal finance blog. First, I went to Golf Smith to get a pair of golf gloves since my current glove is so worn I might as well not use one. When I arrived at the store and looked for a replacement, I found that they were selling for $17.99. Originally, I chose it because they were the most comfortable and had a better grip than the other ones because it was made of cabretta leather. After looking around, I found that it was the most expensive glove in the store! Instead of looking at just the brand, I forced myself to look at what matters more which is form, fit, and function. Then, I set out to try on all the others and found one that was selling for $10.89! I went to a Japanese supermarket that also had a food court for dinner afterwards since it was very late. Years ago before I moved, I go to this supermarket quite often to have lunch/dinner...

ATM Receipts - Wells Fargo vs Bank of America
2007-08-12 19:02:00
My fiancée and I happened to withdraw money from our respective banks (Wells Fargo and Bank of America ) recently and I want to show everyone the ATM receipts to see if they provide different information. As you can see above, they both provide the date and time of the transaction as well as the location. Furthermore, the last four digit of the account number is shown along with the amount withdrawn and available balance.
