Another Week of Sharing with You and Getting Closer to The Next Giveaway
2007-08-12 06:15:00
As mentioned last week, I will be putting up another giveaway when the RSS readership reaches 300. This week has seen a small increase but we are not quite there yet. I’m actually started to feel a little impatient because I want to give the prize away already In any case, I will keep my word and wait patiently until 300 happens!! This week, there was a huge increase in the number of comments from everyone so thank you very much for your continual participation! Your involvement is a major part of what makes this site fun and entertaining since we can all learn from each other! As always, here are some interesting stories from the top commentators for the week. J2R speaks to us about something called the invincibility complex and how to avoid it. Marie introduces us to a newsletter that she subscribes to on this post about saving money. Eric talks to us about how he would invest if he has a large sum of money inspired by an article from The Simple Dollar. (Eric’s s...

How Payday Loans Works
2007-08-11 19:12:00
Usually the loan with the highest APR, payday loans are designed to be short-term loans to cover a borrower’s urgent expenses. These loans are usually of very small value, from a couple hundred to a couple thousand dollars with very short terms (a few weeks). The fact that terms are short and loan amounts small gives lenders great flexibility to charge ultra high interest rates without people really noticing. For example, if you were the borrowing $200 for 2 weeks, charging $30 would not seem like much. However, this means a 400 percent annualized loan. This is compared to a credit loan that typically charges 18% and mortgages which charges 6.5% these days. Typical Scenario for a Person Taking Payday Loans A person (We will call him 082 since he joined the agency after 007) wanted to buy an iPhone but his payday was in 2 weeks. Since he maxed out all his credit cards, he turned to take a payday loan. He borrowed $750 since he wanted the 8GB version as well as a car charger an...

Read the Advices Carefully or You Risk Losing All Your Money
2007-08-10 21:26:00
There is no doubt that the market is very volatile and has gone down quite a bit in the last 3 weeks or so. Usually during these times, we will hear about many advices from personal finance sites like this one about buying more stocks when the stocks are down since we are in it for the long run. However, we all need to read these carefully or else we might risk losing all our money. What I mean is that we need to make sure the stocks we are buying is worth owning for the long run in the first place. The articles offering advices usually steer you towards buying low cost index funds. Because of the diversified nature of index funds, the long term trend is up. However, individual stocks are not the same. A particular stock can go down, and down, and down even more and never be able to recover. Therefore, it is imperative when we read advices that we don’t blindly follow advices incorrectly. We are responsible for our money and we are the ones that need to be careful! Che...

The Importance of Knowing You Are Spending Intelligently
2007-08-09 17:43:00
My fiancée came back from a new car wash facility today and told me that she would need to spend much more per car wash since the initial cost of turning on the machine is $1.75. As we know from my last article on where we usually go, we spend a total of $0.75. This example confirms that the cost of doing the same thing can have a big difference depending on where we go. This also implies that many of the advices personal finance sites like ours give are inadequate. Sure, we suggest everyone to prepare our own food instead of eating out as I did here. This certainly saves us money but we could still be spending way too much money on preparing food if we aren’t a smart grocery shopper. For example, I could be eating out for $5 a meal, but I might easily spend more than $5 per meal if I eat at home. Therefore, it is not enough to be satisfied merely on the basis that we make our coffee at home or prepare our own meals. We also have to look at whether or not we are doing so ef...

My Employer Might Start Charging Me Money For Being Fat
2007-08-08 17:33:00
I read from Business Week that Clarian Health is going to deduct $10 from every paycheck if the employee’s body mass index (BMI, a ratio of height to weight that measures body fat) is over 30 starting in 2009. I had to read the article twice to make sure I did not read it wrong (you can read the whole thing here). This is totally insane! How can a company penalize someone for being too fat? I can understand that you don’t want employees that are unhealthy because their productivity is not as high but the real solution is to not hire them in the first place. The article also mentions that $5 will be deducted per paycheck if the person smokes. I’m all for reducing smoking in the country but this is just too radical for me. It’s the exact same thing as someone telling me that I will be fined because I drink coffee at work, or like Godiva chocolate instead of Hersey’s. I’m sorry for ranting but this is just way overboard in my opinion. The comp...

Jim Cramer Stop Trading Madness
2007-08-08 04:31:00
I first saw this at Money, Matter, and More Musings but I don’t believe I have ever seen Jim Cramer as mad as he was in this video. For those that missed it, you can check it out below. Obviously, Jim believes the credit crunch in the market is really bad and that many people will lose their homes in the next few years unless the federal reserves cut interest rates. I wonder though if he is just upset because he lost a lot of money in the recent market volatility. For long term investors, remember that the way to go is to build a diversified stock portfolio and buy whether the market is going up or down. Cheers for market downturn, and cheers for the market upswings because we have our lives to live.

Can We Use Alexa Rankings to Buy or Sell Stocks
2007-08-07 17:38:00
I just thought about this and wanted to share with you to see what others think. I installed the Alexa toolbar for firefox a couple weeks ago and it shows a 4 month visitor trend graph that is neatly tucked in the right hand corner of the screen. The idea of this chart is to show the visitor trend graph for the past four months but doesn’t this show which sites are more popular and indirectly tell us how the company is doing? Here are some examples of companies that are heavily dependent on site traffic for revenue. Amazon As you can see, the visitor trend graph is dropping at a steady place. This should mean less sales for them unless they are somehow able to get people to buy more per visit. However, the stock price has been climbing for many months now. Yahoo It seems like Yahoo is suffering from a little bit of a decrease in traffic over the last 6 months but not as drastic as amazon.com. However, the stock has really taken a beating for the last few months. From...

How Washing Laundries Is Like Reducing Debt
2007-08-06 17:31:00
I was looking at a pile of laundry one day and thought that there are many similarities between our laundries and our debts. We do not like to accumulate much of it, especially when it gets to the point as shown in the picture where it just looks overwhelming. However, laundries and debts are a necessary part of our lives and only a small percentage of the population is immune to having to deal with them. Let’s explore the similarities below. Many of us routinely wash our laundries at a set interval. We are able to start fresh with an empty basket because we clean up our mess before it becomes uncontrollable. This is the same with debts. Naturally, we accumulate debt through the use of our credit cards but it is imperative to pay them off every month. If we are able to pay off our credit cards every month, debts won’t become uncontrollable. Of course, this implies not purchasing items that you cannot afford in the first place. There are some people that wear his/her clo...

California’s Weird Law for Cheques
2007-08-03 17:27:00
I just heard from my fiancée that she heard the recipient of a cheque can tell the bank that the amount the cheque is worth up to $15 more without the bank really questioning it. She claims that this came from her Bank of America rep. To illustrate it in an example, let’s say that if I got a cheque for $100, I can theoretically tell the teller that the cheque is really $110, which I would get. It is up to the issuer of the cheque to dispute this and if nothing was done, then the bank won’t be responsible either. This might be a  but has anyone else heard of this? I can’t seem to find any basis for this on the web but I trust what my fiancée is telling me. Assuming the law is true; I can see that it will help in situations where there are discrepancies between the agreed amount and what’s written on the cheque. However, this seems to be a law that can be too easily abused by the public. Can you imagine if we get $15 more for every cheque that we receive? This just ...

Personal Finance Readers Saving Poll Results
2007-08-03 01:43:00
Earlier, I asked the readers when they started saving for retirement here. It’s been a couple days since and here are the results! Before my 20s (11%) In my 20s (57%) 30s (17%) 40s (9%) 50s (0%) Still haven’t saved anything (6%) I’d like to congratulate us because the vast majority of us started saving for retirement by their 30s (85%).  Furthermore, for the 6% of us that haven’t started yet, start now! As far as savings goes, it will be what we live on when we retire.  So saving for retirement needs to be one of our biggest priorities!  This includes maxing out our 401k plans, IRAs, and also having some money set aside for retirement purposes.  There are many ways to do this and none of them can be deemed best.  Depending on our risk tolerance, we might want to buy stocks, or put it in a online savings account.  The key is to start saving (which most of us have) and keep it up.  Every little cent builds up and we will be wealthy in no time!

Donating is Not Limited to Money
2007-08-02 03:12:00
Last time, I spoke about UNICEF which is an non-profit organization that I donate to but there seem to be many different ways to donate these days.  Today, let’s explore the idea of car donations. First of all, you need to read this document from the IRS which has quite a bit of information on car donations.  It has a wealth of information from including: Selecting a charity Qualifying for a tax deduction Determining the Value of Your Car Recordkeeping and Filing Requirements State Law Requirements Assistance Through the Charity, State Officials and IRS There are some car donation sites out there which help you with this process.  In the one I linked to, you literally just fill out a form and  you will get an instant receipt for tax purposes.  The site will also arrange someone to come tow the car away and let us release our ownership of the car (title, keys) to the tow driver. Personally, I will donate my car if the car was old and if I were going to donate the same am...

A Calculation of the Short Time Between the Statement and Due Date of My Ci
2007-08-01 17:33:00
I have well publicized that I changed to the Citibank’s PremierPass Card Elite Level for all my credit card purchase to take advantage of their generous mile bonuses whenever I fly. (You can read the article here if you need a refresher). However, I found that there is one major difference between my Wells Fargo Credit Card and my new card that warrants a mention here because the new citi card might be costing me money in ways I never realized until recently. The main difference I found with my citi visa credit card is that the time between the statement date and the due date is very short. For example, my statement date last month was 7/9 and my payment was due on 7/30. This means that if I made a purchase on 7/8, I will need to pay for it 7/30. As a comparison, my Wells Fargo credit card had a statement date of around the 25th of the month, with the due date on the 23rd.What’s the big deal? Here’s a little calculation. I’m going to assume that I buy $100 worth of stuf...

Disaster Planning
2007-08-01 06:00:00
It is always a good idea to plan for disasters. This is a review of the website that helps you do exactly this. Here is the description from the author itself: AxcessPoints is a secure online planning resource that helps individuals and families better organize critical personal, medical and financial information and minimize the impact of a natural disaster. Most of us probably are very cautious when we sign up for new tools, especially when there is a fee. This site allows us a 30-day free trial without giving out our credit card information, so I signed up for an account. After providing some basic information (email, date of birth, name and addresses), I was able to get an account instantly without getting those usual confirmation emails. After looking through, the account basically allows us to store all our emergency contacts, medical histories, and other information like our insurance information. Another feature in the site helps us build an emergency kit by giving us...

Set Boundaries For Yourself To Guide You to Wealth
2007-07-31 17:35:00
I got a letter from Etrade today about completing my details for my online savings account.  One of the things I noticed is that they didn’t include the enclosed envelope for us to mail the paperwork back. These days, companies are finding more and more ways to save money.  The simple idea I mentioned might be able to save Etrade tens of thousands of dollars since they don’t have to provide the postage fees. Although corporations are looking for ways to save money, not all of us are.  For most of us, our money leaks like the extra coffee we buy, that extra large fries that we really couldn’t finish, or paying extra for that electronic gadget we wanted because we were too lazy to find a good deal online really waste much of our money. It’s actually quite hard to not waste money when there are no rules to go by.  This is especially difficult when the amount we often slurge on is small.  It would make things much easier however if you limit our boundarie...

Where I Bought My Harry Potter Novel and How to Find a Better Deal on Books
2007-07-30 17:34:00
I finally got the Harry Potter book from Costco for $18.19 since it was the best deal I could get after a little bit of a research. This is compared to Amazon’s $17.99 price plus shipping (For free shipping, I needed to get over $25 worth of literature). Below are the few places I search around when I need a book or magazine. Books For most people, having boxes shipped to their house is not a problem so Amazon is usually the least expensive choice if we can group purchases together so each order is $25 (This gets us free shipping). The other choice would be Costco, Sam’s Club or Walmart which often sells books at a discount. The advantage of going to the store is that we can get the book the day we want it instead of having to wait for the package to come. There is something new at the airport newsstands lately called borrow and return. For many people, this is a better choice than buying a book outright because we can buy the book and then return it, getting half of the mon...

Donating Helps Millions of People Including You
2007-07-30 17:32:00
I first got involved with UNICEF when our school supported this charity by having all the kids bring a little donation box when we went to trick-or-treat during Halloween. (For those that are unfamiliar with this North American tradition, kids would go door to door to get candies from neighbors on Oct 31st every year to help keep the ghosts away) I remembered when I brought the little donation box around during my primary school days, I did not really know the implications or the benefits of what I was doing. A few years ago, I donated some money for my friend’s run to help the poor. At the time, I have to be honest and say that I did this more as a favor for my friend than as a way to help. A few months later however, I got a letter from UNICEF telling me how much each dollar of my donation helped the children that are not as fortunate as us. From that day, I started giving donations regularly. I did this because I saw how much my money could help. It also gave...

How One Couple Saved for Their Dream Home In 5 Short Years
2007-07-29 20:07:00
I just read an article on NY Times about a couple that saved $98,000 in 5 years to buy their first house in New York. They are a perfect inspiration for all of us that says we don’t have enough money to save because the couple were by no means earning high salaries (a little over $100,000 combined by the end of the 5 years and much less at the beginning) while having to deal with the high standards of living of Manahattan. In order to put the down payment on the $445,000 apartment, they quit smoking, stop meeting their friends for beers after work, stop buying new clothes, gadgets and pretty much everything that they did not need. The question they often ask themselves were “Do I want the house or an iPod? or Do I want a latte or the house?” It was hardest for them in the beginning because they weren’t used to not buying those luxury items but they slowly got used to it. During the first year, they saved $8,000. In the next two years, they saved a combine...

2007-07-29 17:54:00
Being a Harry Potter fan, I plan to buy the last book that just came out about a week ago. I wanted to going to Costco first to see how much it costs there first so I should know by today. I’m not sure if I will ever read a novel in my life again after I finish this book since Harry Potter has been the only novel I have read in my life (somehow I got through school without reading any :)). Before I become consumed in the book though, I want send my thanks to everyone whom left comments on my site the past week. Here are some links from the most active commentators. Pinyo has a brand new website and he mentioned about a test to see if you are wealthy! Adam has an interview up with the owner of the website buyafriendabook.com. I think buying a book as a gift is a great idea since it’s worth more for the “giftee” in the long run (assuming you buy him something that will enlightening his thinking). Is Coke What I Really Want
2007-07-29 00:02:00
Today is a very hot day. It is so hot that we were wondering if we can “take off” parts of our skin. 20 minutes ago, I really had this urge of drinking coke. I thought to myself that it would taste great, it would be ice cold, and it would make my day just so much better! I rushed to the kitchen, opened the fridge and that’s when it dawned on me that we had 3 cans of coke left from buying a case of soda a year ago. If I finished those 3, I’m not sure if we will go out and buy any unless they were on sale again. The thought pondered my mind a little more, and I realized that it is not necessarily Coca-Cola that I wanted, but rather something cold. I looked around, and realized that I would have been just as happy with …. A great cup of ice water! So here you go, healthier and less expensive. Have a great rest of the weekend!

Make Money Off Renting Apartments
2007-07-27 17:33:00
Today, I saw a posting from my landlord about a two bedroom apartment up for lease and also a $150 referral incentive if we can find someone to lease that unit. The greedy / business-minded side of me immediately thought about whether it would make sense to switch to a two bedroom apartment and try to rent out the extra bedroom. Below were the pros and cons that I thought about. Advantages Rent Charges - The rent for my one bedroom apartment is currently $995 and the two bedrooms are running for $1,350. This means that as long as I can charge more than $355 for the extra bedroom, I will come out ahead on rent alone. Utilities - I can structure a contract so that the person that rents the extra bedroom share the utility bills. This will further cut down on the utilities we spend since there are some fixed ones like internet and cable TV. Sell some furniture - If the new tenant has some furniture they want to bring into the apartment, it will allow us to sell the furniture that we hav...

Why We Always Recommend Buying Low Cost Index Funds
2007-07-26 17:32:00
Many of us read countless advices about investing, with a vast majority of them recommending low cost index funds for the individual investor. Some of the articles provide a better argument than others, while some don’t give a reason at all. This article illustrates what happened with one of my reader’s investment portfolio so we can judge for ourselves whether low cost index funds are for us. MoneyNing, Like you, I am in the west coast and when I get to the office, the US stock market has opened. Sometimes I check the performance of my stocks, and other times I do not (actually, I check it all the time). When I did check it this morning, I noticed that the money in my taxable account went down by 12%. I looked into the details and realized what has happened. One of my stocks Wavecom (WVCM) just reported earnings and the stock went down 20%. Since I had much money in this stock, I was hurt bad. Really bad. Panicking, I sold WVCM along with Apple (AAPL) because I was afraid Apple...

Waste Miles Per Gallon of Gas
2007-07-25 17:30:00
In recent years, we have been taught to use metrics such as miles per gallon (MPG) to determine the gas efficiency of a car. Certainly, driving the same gallon of gas on a Toyota Corolla is many times more efficient than that on a BMW X5. However, many of us don’t realize that it might be just as beneficial if we become more gas conscious! Often in life, we neglect to think of how we can change the situation by bettering ourselves and instead try to find ways to patch the problem. In our example, our problem is really spending too much money on gas and the patch is to find a more gas efficient car. Sure, having a car with high MPG definitely allows you to spend less money, but it only reduces your spending. In order to be really efficient, you should look at how much gas you are wasting. Let’s walk through my Monday and see how much gas I wasted. I live 2.12 miles from work and I drive to work every single day. I could bike to work or at least bike some of the time. It would be ...

My Fiancée’s Birthday is Today and a Birthday Finance Tip
2007-07-24 14:30:00
It would be very much appreciated if everyone can leave a comment and say Happy Birthday to my fiancée since today is the day! I cannot disclose what today’s plans are yet since part of it is a surprise, but I typically spend much more money in July because her birthday is in the same month. We spend much of the year saving money and there are times when we should spend some of our saved money to celebrate. The spending might be counter-productive technically but you cannot put a dollar amount on happiness. On another note, we joined the Red Robin eClub, and they sent us a coupon for a free burger that is redeemable at the restaurant. This is an $8 - $11 savings depending on the burger that you get! The best part about this is that we get a 14 day period where the coupon can be used, so we aren’t forced to go on her birthday. Happy Birthday My Love!

Our First Official Wedding Planning Meeting
2007-07-23 18:04:00
As I mentioned some time ago, my fiancée and I are getting married in February of 2008. After many weeks of searching and qualifying our options, we decided to have a banquet at a resort close to where we live. A quick tally of the major expenses of our wedding so far is as follows: Wedding Items Price Banquet hall (includes food, reception, and ceremony) $13,500 Wedding coordinator $900 Wedding Cake ??? (~ $300) Flower ??? ($500 - $2000 depending) Minister ??? (~ $200) Photographer / Videographer ??? (~ $500 - $1,500) Misc (wedding invitation, thank you cards, gifts for guest etc etc) $1,000 Total $16,900 - $19,400 As you can see, there are many things that can still fluctuate at this point. For example, the wedding cake, flowers and photographers can be very inexpensive or they can cost us all our life savings depending on how elaborate we want our wedding to be. On the budget side, the $10,000 as mentioned earlier quickly became $20,000 as we will be inviti...

Wedding Planning and Some Link Love
2007-07-23 02:57:00
Another week has gone by and I am happy to be back from Canada! I had a discussion with my fiancée about our wedding so stay tuned for tomorrow’s post about the newest update. As always, I want to thank all the comments everyone left last week and I will highlight some of the posts from my top supporters! SEO Web Design writes about Yahoo’s possible 12 billion bid for MySpace. This must be a joke because it would be about 25 – 30% of Yahoo’s total market share and would be the stupidest idea the company has ever made. All I can say is that if this happens, short Yahoo stock. Baz talks about his why the iPhone can kiss his iButt. (He did ask iPhone lovers to stay away but that did not stop me from reading his post and even linking to it!) This one is for everyone who owns a website out there. Guest Post - Biweekly Mortgage Payment
2007-07-21 18:00:00
I invited Engineer to do a guest post as he helped answer many of my FICO scores on an earlier article. His site, Engineering My Finances, is dedicated to articles on personal finance and his approach to prepare for retirement. Below is his article about Biweekly Mort gage Payment s so check out his site and the article! — A few years back, my sister told me of an offer from her mortgage company. Basically, the loan would be restructured so that 1/2 of the current monthly payment would be paid every two weeks, to align with the biweekly pay period of most people. Since there are 52 weeks per year, not 48, there are 26 paydays per year. If you make 1/2 month’s mortgage payment every payday, then effectively there are 13 payments made every year instead of 12, the loan is paid sooner, and less interest is paid over the life of the loan. But there are more details to the offer. There’s a one-time fee of $300 to restructure the loan, and a $6 fee each month to pay for th...

Business Idea - Make Millions with Ferry Crossing Services
2007-07-20 17:30:00
A couple weekends ago, I went to Balboa Island for a luncheon with some friends. While I was there, I realized that a very smart person has established a ferry service that lets people and vehicles to cross the island for a couple bucks per trip. Although there are other ways to get on the island, this was convenient for many people so business is good for this owner. A closer look at the price board and the traffic shows that this is not only a very profitable business but a relatively stress free business. As you can see in the photo, each car and driver needs to pay $2.00 and passengers on the car also pays $1.00. Look at that line up! I was there on Sunday but I walked by that place 4-5 times and there was always a huge line up to get on. When I was on the ferry, there were 48 people (36 adults, 12 children) on the same boat including passengers in the cars. Additionally, there were 3 bicycles and 3 cars and the total trip time was 7 minutes and 23 seconds. Total Revenue (Calc...
