Cost of Getting Sick
2008-02-22 17:30:00
I don’t used to feel that bad when I’m sick because I get to miss school (now work). Every time I’m sick, I just call and say that I’m not coming in and I get to rest at home. At my work, I get 48 hours of sick time a year. Even if I don’t use them (I used a total of 4 hours last year), I lose them since they do not accumulate so it made sense to use them. However, as I got older and more in tune with finances in general, I realized that getting sick can potentially be quite expensive. In this post, I won’t go into the costs of major sickness and only want to talk about the common stuff like cold and fever etc. How much does these costs us? Seeing the Doctor We have health insurance at work but we still have to pay a fee of $20 every time we see a doctor. If I have to see my family physician and then he refers me to some other specialist, the costs of this adds up pretty quickly. Usually, they also prescribes some type of medicine, costing ...

Reduce the Moving Expenses - A General Negotiation Tip
2008-02-20 17:30:00
We are moved in to our new apartment and pretty much all settled at this point. Thanks to my wife, everything went extremely smooth. She not only helped coordinate everybody to help with packing, but she also found a good moving company to do the actual moving. Just to give you an idea of how efficient the whole thing went, we got married on Saturday Feb 9 with nothing packed, rested the whole day Sunday and was in the new apartment by Tuesday Feb 12. So before I say anything else, I’ve got to say THANK YOU to my wonderful wife! (Okay, on with the article…) Thinking back, there would be one thing we thought could’ve been better, which was having a smaller moving bill! The moving company told us that they charge $100 / hr for their service from the get go. When asked about what the total charge would be, the mover told us that it is quite difficult to calculate it since they haven’t seen our place and don’t know how long it will take. He went on ...

4 Fed Functions You Have Never Heard Of
2008-02-19 17:30:00
This is a guest post by Heather Johnson, a freelance finance and economics writer, as well as a regular contributor for CurrencyTrading.net, a site for currency trading and forex trading information. Heather welcomes comments and freelancing job inquiries through email. The Federal Reserve makes big news when it calls a press conference to make an adjustment to the interest rate, as it has recently done to help assuage fears of a recession caused by the subprime mortgage crisis. Most minimally aware people also know that the Fed plays a role in lending money to banks and clearing checks. What few but the most financially savvy realize, however, is that our nation’s bank has a host of subtler ways that it affects both our overall economy and the relative strength of the Dollar in forex markets. If you can stay apprised of the developments in these lesser-known arenas, you will gain an insider’s view of our economy. Learn to read how the Fed is functioning in the follo...

Motivation Monday - One Day at a Time
2008-02-18 17:30:00
Those that are jealous of friends that have today off because of President’s Day can read this post first.  Otherwise, it’s time to not thinking Monday as the start of the week but rather think of now as the start of today! Much of the reason why we have Monday blues is because we feel like Friday is so far away.  We think of having to work for 5 straight days until we can rest again even though it is simply not true!  Whether it’s at 5:00pm or 9:00pm, we always get a chance to leave the work place and rest every single day.  By thinking about one day at a time, we don’t allow ourselves to feel discouraged because there are still so many days before we get a break. While we are thinking of one day at a time, we are also breaking up our time into smaller chunks.  This promotes us to get things done because the more precise we are with our use of time, the more we will find that we can fit more things into our schedule and the more things we eventually can...

The Week after my Wedding and the Day after Valentine’s Day
2008-02-15 17:30:00
I always spend some time after a celebration to analyze all my expenses. It is a good way for me to see whether all the money spent was actually wasted or whether it was well justified. It also provided a way for me to get a feel of where my money is going. Getting married was the biggest event of my life thus far, and with it came many big expenses. I have not gotten around to figuring out everything yet but I will be sure to share that with all of you so stay tuned. Today, I just want to talk about Valentine’s Day since we just passed it. For many, it usually involves flowers, gifts, and dining out which translate to transferring much of our money to other people’s pockets. Thinking about the years passed makes me wonder how much I really spent on this wonderful but expensive day of the year. My conversations with others give me the feeling that the only way to celebrate Valentine’s Day is with activities and gifts involving money. However, this is of cours...

Save Your Receipts To Promote Frugality
2008-02-12 17:30:00
While packing for the move to the new apartment, I started throwing away all the receipts that I kept in my drawer for the past 2 years. Naturally, I started to become curious of all this spending through the last 24 months so I decided that it would be fun to just add up all the amounts from the huge load of receipts. The total came out to be $18,495.34. Oh.. My.. God.. I felt a little disgusted because most of these expenses were not really necessities as my wife were taking care of the necessary expenses like groceries and utilities. To say that I wasted some money was an understatement. Instead of using $18k on eating out, electronics, entertainment, I could’ve put it into my savings account and be much further down my path to financial freedom. I know, I need to spend money once in a while but $18k is a lot. Seeing this total gives me much more motivation to save money. For those of us that doesn’t like to save, perhaps keeping all the receipts for a few month...

Motivation Monday - The First Work Day After Vacation
2008-02-11 17:30:00
If Monday s are bad, then the first work day after coming home from our vacation is extremely bad. This is the day when we have to wake up early again after days (or weeks) of sleeping in. When we get to the office in the morning, we still want to talk about our vacation. We linger around the coffee machine in the lunch room just for a chance that someone else will step in and ask how our vacation was. Eventually though, our minds (more likely our bosses) bring us back to reality. In most companies, someone taking vacation usually doesn’t mean that the person is excused from work for the duration of the time off but rather mean that the work is just delayed until the person comes back. Therefore, around the same time we realize that it is indeed a work day, we also find out that there are already piles of work waiting for us to complete which was due yesterday. We all want to stop feeling bad after we come back, so here are some things to possibly reduce the Monday blue ef...

Buy Low and Sell High
2008-02-08 17:30:00
The stock market has been very volatile for the past month. During these times, there was a record number of withdrawals from mutual funds as people get scared of being invested in equities. We know this is normal because this is just emotions playing games on us. We know that when everyone is scared about investing in stocks, it means that everyone who will sell stocks have already sold, a sign of a bottom. We also know that when everyone is talking about the stock market never going down, it means that a crash is likely. During the last month, I have increased my exposure to stocks. Other than continuing to contribute to my 401k, I have moved 30% of my cash holdings into the stock market. Although the stocks I purchased with additional money increased in value, I’m not prepared to say that this strategy has worked because my goal is not for short term gain. I believe that if I always buy stocks when everyone is scared and sell stocks when everyone is complacent, I wil...

Filing Form 1040X When We Need to Correct Our Filed Tax Return
2008-02-07 17:30:00
In tuesday’s article, I mentioned that I forgot to record one of my joint accounts’ interest earnings on my tax return and I went on to talk about what I’ve learned about tax returns and joint accounts. If you’re one of those people that thought it was weird that I never talked about how I was going to fix this error, then today’s article will address this. What should we do when we realized that we made a mistake on our return but it was already filed? Basically, it will depend on whether you e-filed or not. If you e-filed and the IRS rejects your return, then you have a chance to fix the error and resubmit. However, if you e-filed and the IRS accepts your return (meaning the return is already on the way), then you will have to wait till after you receive your refund. Once you receive your check, you should prepare and file a Form 1040X. Note is that this form can only be mailed and cannot be filed electronically. Once you mail the form, it may t...

Joint Accounts and Filing Taxes on Schedule B of Form 1040
2008-02-05 17:30:00
I e-filed my tax return last Saturday night only to check my mail box on Sunday and find an interest earnings tax form (1099-INT) from one of my joint account with my fiancee that I totally forgot about. So, I quickly went on Google and researched on the topic and learned a couple things about joint accounts and taxes. Filed Under the Primary Account Holder Since this is a joint account, I immediately thought about whether I could’ve just filed everything until the other person (my fiancee) as I haven’t filed hers yet. After searching the web, I find out that joint accounts are usually filed under the primary account holder and need to be filed under that person. Of course, I never knew who the primary account holder was but the way to check is to see who’s SSN is on the tax form. The other way to check is to see who’s name appear first on the tax form since both names will appear on the 1099-INT. Unfortunately for me, my name was on the tax form first s...

Motivation Monday - Knowing the Deadline Is Approaching
2008-02-04 17:30:00
Today is the last Monday of my single life, and apart from feeling very confused about everything, I also feel an urge to help make sure everything for the wedding is all set before our big day Saturday. On the other hand, my fiancee is also scrambling and really worried about whether or not everything is prepared the right way and to her liking. All this is normal because my fiancee and I are both pushed to work harder by the fact that we are extra worried as the wedding day (deadline) approaches. This is funny in a way because one would think that we would try to spend more time in the beginning to get everything settled way ahead of time and relax during the last few days. Translate this theory to our work, and we can see all the similarities. We all have projects, and with project comes schedules. It is often said that schedule is one of the most important aspect of the whole project. With most projects, the last few days (or hours) are usually the busiest and the most impo...

Hidden Charges of Moving So Far
2008-02-01 17:30:00
Recently, my fiancee and I decided to move after we get married. However, it seemed like there were many associated cost with moving that we did not consider originally. Although these add to our moving expenses, it wouldn’t necessarily change our decision. Nevertheless, let me share with you the ones we’ve discovered so far.Extra charges for moving/establishing monthly services We were charged $25 for establishing gas service and $15 for moving our electricity to the new place. On top of that, our monthly bill for our cable + internet will go up by approximately $30 dollars because the new company (Cox in our case) has pretty bad deals. Cost of Moving Day After hearing about people getting into arguments when they ask their friends to help them move, we decided to hire a moving company. We estimate that the charge will be $200 for this to happen. We figured that renting a truck for $100 and treating our friends to dinner afterwards is going to be the same price. S...

Talking to a Live Person in India is Great Once In a While
2008-01-31 17:30:00
I realized a few days ago that my sister’s flight will arrive in Los Angeles for my wedding at 8:00pm, which meant that there was no way for her to get to the car rental place before it closes at 5. So, I went online and tried to change the pickup time to the morning of the following day. Much to my surprise, the quoted rental price went up even though it was still the same one week rental! I thought to myself that the online system probably recalculates the weekly rental price based on the current rate that they were offering. Unsatisfied by this, I called customer service because I actually just wanted to pick up the car the next day as the car rental facility closes at 5. Once I got someone on the phone, I explained my situation of not being able to get to the car rental place at the original time specified on the reservation. I asked if I can change my car reservation to pickup the car the next day or whether I can just leave it the same but come the next day. The ag...

Retirement Quiz Reveals How Much Help We Need
2008-01-30 17:30:00
Think you know everything about 401k and IRAs? I invite you to take the Kiplinger’s Retirement Quiz ! After each question, it will instantly tell you whether you got the question right or wrong and then give some information related to the topic. What I want to talk about though is actually the statistics that it showed after I took the quiz. Take a look at this: The quiz consisted of a total of 10 questions about varies aspects of 401k and IRAs. As you can see, two-thirds (67%) of 14000+ participants answered less than 8 out of 10 questions correct. This means that many people couldn’t fully take advantage of the 401k and IRAs even if they wanted to because chances are people don’t know the complete picture of these plans. Based on these results, it shows that everyone should learn more about 401ks, IRAs and retirement plans in general! We can accomplish this by reading financial blogs like this one as well as keep up to date with finance magazines. Anoth...

Disturbing Mortgage Ad from ING Direct
2008-01-29 17:30:00
With so many news articles about subprime loan and people being suckered into low teaser rates that ultimately reset, one would think that there wouldn’t be many ads about mortgage products that shouldn’t be sold to the general public in the first place. Today however, I got an ad from ING Direct advertising their low Adjustable Rate Mortgage (ARM) rate!!! I was quite disturbed by this ad because it was these same products that got the united states into the whole housing mess in the first place. Sure, ARM is a great choice for mortgage for a small minority of people. However, no where in the ad do I see that this type of mortgage might not be for everyone. All I see is: During the initial 5-year fixed rate period, you can save more than $8,200 in interest compared to a 30-year fixed rate mortgage. (Interest savings is over the first five years for a $235,000 loan) Start saving today with an Orange Mortgage! If you just read this statement without knowing much else a...

Motivation Monday - Everyone Slacks Off
2008-01-28 17:30:00
Everyone must be confused with the title because we don’t usually see slacking off and motivation in the same sentence.  Let’s face it, everyone slacks off.  This is a given.  In fact, my boss told me that he slacks off once in a while too.  He mentions solitaire as his favorite computer game to kill time. So if my boss (an ultra motivated entrepreneur who’s built a company that employs 150 people from nothing) slacks off, it’s safe to say that pretty much everyone slacks off too.  The point of this post is not to say that slacking off is good.  Actually, slacking off obviously detracts us from the job at hand.  However, I just want to point out that it is normal for us to have the urge to take a break.  The difference between my boss and the rest of us is probably in the frequency that this happens and how fast we snap out of it. So don’t worry so much about why we always want to slack off.  It is normal and healthy!  Don’t ever think t...

Two more weeks and I’m getting married!  I’ve just been way too busy these days trying to figure everything out!  I can’t begin to imagine what it’s like for my fiancee right now because she is pretty much the lead on all the coordination between everybody!  I anticipate to be even busier for the next 2-3 weeks when my family start to arrive and I hope to be back in full force after this to bring you great personal finance content! Here are some of this week’s articles that are worth checking out! Ways to Get a Tax Refund
2008-01-25 17:30:00
I just saw a commercial from H&R Block about the option of having our tax refund put onto a debit card (actually, they started offering it as an option last year). I’m totally against this because I don’t think it is the best idea to have someone else hold my refund. If anything, I want my refund as quickly as possible so I can put it into my savings and investments. With that said, here are some alternatives for your tax refund. Getting a Check This is the oldest way to get a refund. Even though checks are used less and less, some of us still opt for this option. In general, we want to avoid this because it takes an additional 3 weeks for IRS to mail our checks to us, not to mention that the check might be lost through the mail. However, those that enjoy the thrill of getting a big check might consider this. Direct Deposit Into Your Bank Accounts This option has been available for at least a couple of years now. With an established banking infrastructure in p...
Speak Up and Save Money
2008-01-24 17:30:00
My fiancee is very good at helping us save money because she isn’t afraid to speak up!  Just today, she managed to save us $500 because she spoke up when we were treated unfairly.  The place we picked for our wedding ceremony had a $500 wedding coordination fee and we were told that it was part of the package and was basically mandatory if we picked this place.  Since we liked the location so much, we decided to pay for it even though we didn’t feel that we needed the wedding coordination help. As our wedding planning process continued, we tried to contact the wedding coordinator without luck.  After a few months, we finally found out the wedding coordinator took a long vacation during this time and that’s why was unreachable.  I would’ve probably just be frustrated but not say anything.  However, my fiancee took a better approach.  She called the sales director of the banquet hall and basically explained the situation to him and expressed disappointme...

No Envelopes at the ATM to Deposit My Check
2008-01-22 17:30:00
I bank at Wells Fargo and I couldn’t deposit a check today because there ran out of envelopes at the ATM! Luckily, I didn’t need the money to be in my account but what if I did? Would I have tried to deposit the check without an envelope? What would’ve been my choices otherwise? It’s impossible to answer these hypothetical questions since I wasn’t put in the situation but what’s important is how I can solve this potential little problem. Here’s a couple of ways to do so. Keep Some Envelopes of My Own This is the obvious solution. I’m sure that if I put it in my own envelope, Wells Fargo will accept it, especially if the reason is because they ran out! An alternative is to keep some of Wells Fargo specific envelopes in my car but that might be a bit cumbersome. Deposit During Office Hours and Inside the Branch Using the ATM during office hours allows us to ask the people in the bank to give us some envelopes. In fact, there&rsqu...

Motivation Monday - Look Forward Our Rewards
2008-01-21 17:30:00
I finally decided to move!  To put this into context, this is a decision made 3 weeks before getting married so I will be even busier than normal as I get to something else to worry about one more thing!!  (In reality, I think my fiancee will go crazy long before I will because she is doing almost all the coordination for the wedding.) Writing about this makes me so happy even though it’s Monday !  This is because I have something to look forward to now.  Instead of thinking about why the weekend ended and the work week started, my mind is filled with happy thoughts like the new place I will be living in a few weeks.  It’s amazing how much brighter my work week seems when I made a decision about something that is totally unrelated but I can tell you that this works.  Actually, this works wonders. Of course moving every week to eliminate Monday blues is not an option, but let’s extend this idea further.  Since a few weeks ago, we started to line up rewards wit...

Increasing Your Credit Score
2008-01-18 17:30:00
One of the readers sent me the following question yesterday. I was hoping you could do a blog on how to improve your credit after you have eliminated all debt minus mortgage. I pay no bills other than my mortgage, utilities, and car insurance. My car is paid off. I do not know how to get my credit score up though. Any help would be appreciated. First, I want to congratulate my reader in paying off all his debt!! Not only that, it sounds like his bills are very manageable as long as the mortgage payments aren’t that high. It is almost impossible to figure out exactly how the credit score is calculated, but thinking about what the credit score is used for will help give us some light in how to increase it. Our credit score is basically a measure of how likely we can to pay off our debts. If we look at our credit report, we will see that all our credit lines like credit cards, mortgage payments are on there. If we think about it long enough, we can conclude that the credit sco...

Using Other People’s Money vs Your Own
2008-01-17 17:30:00
Today’s question requires everyone to be honest with themselves. When you are using someone else’s money, do you treat it the same way as your own? For example, do you try to get something more expensive to eat if someone is treating you dinner? How about your spending on business trips when you know you can expense it? I notice many people spend much more on their meals when they are on business trips than they do normally, but not many people will probably voice out and say they actually do this publicly. Hopefully, everyone can be honest in this poll because it is completely anonymous! Do You Use Someone Else’s Money Like Your Own? Always! Don’t You Wish You Have an Emergency Fund Right Now?
2008-01-16 17:30:00
Doesn’t it seem much more important to have an emergency fund now that people are talking about the US going into recession? Something that’s often neglected as a benefit of having an emergency fund is actually the piece of mind of knowing that our standard of living won’t be jeopardized if we lose our jobs. Having an emergency fund will also give us freedom to look for another job if we unfortunately get fired. Imagine someone who lives paycheck to paycheck getting fired. How will he or she keep up? It wouldn’t matter what the former lifestyle is because there is no way he/she can pay another bill. This means that the person is forced to find a job immediately and the chances of finding a good one diminishes drastically. Some might feel that emergency funds are not important because they’ve never used it. Actually, the fund is never meant to be used. It is just a safeguard just in case something happens and cash is needed quickly. The fact that...
