Should Retailers Target Low Income Markets?
2007-09-11 11:02:00
The United States is the land of personal freedom and liberties. With this freedom comes a catch, and that is, you are held responsible for your actions. You may be a teenage boy, who lives in a low-income urban area with a ‘Colt 45′ beer billboard on your street. Whether you then choose to buy ...

The Lamest, Stupidest, Waste of Time and Money
2007-09-10 21:14:00
I keep seeing these cell phone “text to win” commercials on cable TV the last few months and I dispise them so much they are making me really angry. Do people actually do these? They appear to cost around $1.99 each and they typically go like this, “Text Game A or Game B to 75643 to be ...

Work Hard & Work Smart
2007-09-10 18:37:00
Growing up, I always remember people telling me, remember Kyle, “work smart, not hard.” I always thought that sounded like wise advice and kept those words buried shallow in my sub-conscious. Today, I am 33 years old and the father of three children and have a very different take on that advice. As my kids ...

How To Make Some Money on eBay
2007-09-07 22:58:00
“Where are you going with that?”, I asked my wife as she was carrying some boxes out of our daughter’s room. “Taking it to the Salvation Army” was her reply. “Um, not so fast Speedy Gonzales, let me take a looksie.” Turns out she was about to give away some barely worn clothing plus a ‘Classic Winnie ...

How To Reduce Your Summer Cooling Bill

My Old Man: Frugal, Cheap, or Just Strange?
2007-08-31 19:51:00
I have to preface this by saying my Dad grew up on a farm in Nebraska with no running water. I think they did have electricity when he got a bit older.  Here are some of his conservation techniques: - He puts a brick in the back of the toilet tank so he does not waste water when flushing. - He puts a five gallon bucket in the shower and when it gets filled he uses the water in the bucket to water his garden. (I am not kidding!!!) - He gets in the shower and then turns the water on. Once he is wet, he turns the water off, soaps up, then turns the water back on to rinse off. I don’t think he has had a warm shower since 1986. - As a kid, I can remember him constantly going around the house turning off light switches that were not being used by anyone. Funny thing is, I find myself doing this now when my kids leave the lights on. - He has a wood burning stove and the furnace is NEVER to be turned on. He will sit in his living room and read the paper with a heavy sweatshirt on dur...

10 Frugal Summer Fun Ideas
2007-08-30 22:30:00
As I mentioned earlier, having 3 kids and living on a tight budget, you have to come up with some affordable ways to get out of the house during the summertime and have some fun as a family. So here are some tips that my wife and I either came up with, or were given to us by friends. All of these tips are either free or cost very little to do. 1- Barnes and Noble Storytime. Our local B&N has a free storytime every Saturday morning and evening. Typically a very engaging person reads a story to the kids, often with a guitar or some other instruments and the kids love it. Totally free. Once the story is over let your child pick out some books and find a quiet corner to read to them or let them try and read. Always fun. 2- Local Parks. We are lucky that the town we live in has some very nice parks, often shady, where the kids can run around and play. Great way to let them burn off some energy and meet some new friends. One of the parks in our town, called Kids Kingdom, even has a w...

Blog Post Review Day, Vol. I
2007-08-29 22:18:00
Here is some great reading, mainly because it focuses on posts that were not written by me, but rather by some very talented bloggers. This is a new section dedicated to blogs and blog posts that I discovered this week and found to be either creative or interesting, Most have to do with money saving tips and frugality. (2 of my favorite topics!) Drum roll please…… 1- Are You Falling Into These 4 Frugality Traps? posted at Personal Finance Blog - This is a great post on the value of thinking of frugality in terms of the future. Example, is it better to spend more on a product now if it will last you longer. My wife and I always have this conversation when it come to things like which washing machine to buy or what we should spend on clothing for the kids. 2- Going Green and Frugal posted at Unclaimed Money - Nice concise article on the words “going green” and their connotation is much more popular than the term “frugal”. Truth is both words sho...

Chuck E. Cheese Coupons For The Family
2007-08-29 20:21:00
Last week I took my 5 year old son and 2 year old daughter to our local Chuck E. Cheese and we really had a great time. It is a new location and still quite clean, the old one in our town was pretty nasty and everything you touched seem to stick to your hand! So my wife was hosting Bunco at our house and I had been planning this outing for a while. In anticipation I tried to find some Chuck E. Cheese coupons to help us save some money and found some, yeah! The coupon I used gave us a large pizza, 3 drinks and 30 tokens for $19.99, a pretty reasonable expense for a fun outing. Here are a couple links I used to get our Chuck E. Cheese coupon. Just print them out and you are good to go. Coupon #1 and Coupon #2 Go early if you can, dinner at around 5 pm seems to be about right. We were a little later than that and there was a birthday party going on as well as a baseball team party, it was a little crowded. Say hi to Chuck for me.

7 Ways To Reduce Monthly Costs Right NOW!
2007-08-27 23:00:00
1- Lower your Cable or Satellite subscription package. I have done this in the past and it can easily reduce your bill by $10 to $15 a month. Do you really need Hallmark Channel and Discovery Channel Kids? 2- Vending Machines. Don’t use them. Habit of a drink and snack at work everyday from the vending machine can cost you up to $2.50 a day or $50 a month. Instead, buy what you like at Costco and bring some in every week and leave them in your desk for your snack. 3- Memberships. Do you have a gym membership or DVD membership that you don’t use regularly. If so, analyze them to determine if you are getting your money’s worth, if not, give them the axe. 4- Coffee. Do you drive through your local Starbucks or Dutch Bros. every morning or your way to work to grab a Non-Fat Vanilla Venti Latte, with a sprinkle of nutmeg? At about $3.50 a drink, that will cost you around $70 per month. Instead, brew your own and use a stainless steel travelers mug to take it with you....

2007-08-27 20:57:00
My wife is a stay-at-home mom and we have 3 children ranging from 5 years old to 3 months, so I have a little experience with living on a tight budget! Over the past year or so I have found some frugal living blogs that have some great advice and I have taken a lot of information from them and used it in my own life. I thought it was about time I sat down and put pen to paper (or fingers to keys) and talked about my ten favorite frugal living blogs that I visit often. Please let me know if you have any other great blogs that belong on this list and I will add another section. So here we go…… 1- A Frugal Living Blog by a Frugal Guy - This guy’s blog is a no-nonsense approach to the benefits of living a frugal life. I have taken a lot of advice from him. I like the fact that he preaches the advantages of living a frugal life by choice and thus being able to pursue your financial goals much more aggressively. He has a great sense of humor as well, one of my fav...
