Help Wanted: Write The Gender Speech
2008-04-25 02:03:00
In today's Huffington Post, Marie Wilson, the founder and president of The White House Project, an organization aimed at advancing women in business, politics, and leadership and the co-creator of Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, makes an important plea to women: help us write the gender version of Barack Obama's A More Perfect Union speech

What I said on Fox News
2008-04-24 00:59:00
On Monday, I went on Happy Hour, the awesome Fox Business Channel show that is actually filmed at a real bar, to talk about job searching in a down market. I was joined by Yashoda Khandkar, a senior at the University of Pennsylvania, who recently had her job offer from Bear Stearns, the fledgling investment, rescinded. She was also prominently featured in an article about it in Saturday's New York Times. So what did we talk about? Did I tell her that her only hope for finding a job was moving to China? And are things really as bad as they seem for new graduates. I'll think you'll be pleasantly surprised to know what I had to say.

My Beautiful Mommy
2008-04-19 07:13:00
My Beautiful Mommy  is the title of a new book that just came out.  And no, this is not a book about celebrating the natural beauty of mothers, just in time for Mother's Day. While it looks as innocuous as Dora the Explorer, the children's television series about Dora and her adventures that has garnered a cult following and a whole series of books, this is no Dora the Explorer.  This is a book for mothers that need a vehicle to explain to a children why her nose looks different and her face is bandaged.

Sexism's New Look
2008-04-17 01:06:00
Sexism seems to appear in two different incarnations these days. Two recent articles illustrate these divergent permutations. Amanda Fortini's piece, The Feminist Reawakening: Hillary and the fourth wave, in this week's New York Magazine, points to many disturbing tidbits about the overt sexism surfacing over Hillary Clinton's candidacy. Namely the Facebook group "Hillary Clinton: Stop Running for President and Make Me a Sandwich," the group has 44,000 members. There is also a YouTube video of a KFC bucket that reads HILLARY MEAL DEAL: 2 FAT THIGHS, 2 SMALL BREASTS, AND A BUNCH OF LEFT WINGS.

How to be your own career fairy
2008-04-07 23:22:00
Personally, I'd love a career fairy. A little creature that would do all that self-promotion for me, negotiate my contracts, and keep a watchful eye over me to make sure I didn't become a doormat. But I live in reality, so I don't have one. But, perhaps, I could be my own.

Why Hillary is Good for Your Career
2008-04-03 06:23:00
Want that corner office, that vp title, or a promotion? Then start with your ballot.Last week, I wrote a post over at Brazencareerist.com, a great site that?s all about Gen Ys and the workplace, about why Hillary Clinton is good for your career. The post generated a good deal of chatter, as you can see here, so I wanted to bring the conversation over to you folks at DailyCents.

The Hills Season 3: A play by play for how not to act at work
2008-03-26 10:16:00
Look, I?ll be the first to admit it. I watch The Hills , the hit MTV series that has been billed as Sex and the City for the twentysomething set. In fact, it?s one of the few shows I actually remember to Tivo.  The second half of the third season premiered on Monday night.  I was excited to watch, especially after I read Ginia Bellafante?s review of it in yesterday?s New York Times.  Her headline, ?Career Climbing, With Claws Bared,? made me think that, perhaps, the pseudo-reality show would finally give a realistic glimpse into the career rat race so many real-life twentysomething women are running in.  After watching Monday?s night episode, I was puzzled by Bellafante?s headline. My headline would have read ?Career Climbing, With the Wrong Approach.? The premiere episode is essentially a 60-minute instructional video on how to sabotage your career

Women Business Owners Divulge Their Secrets
2008-03-21 03:38:00
On Tuesday night, I had the honor of attending The National Association of Women Business Owners Signature Awards in New York. While we usually think that it?s the big banks that are the backbone of New York City?s economy, it?s actually the city?s 330,00 women business owners, who generate nearly $65 billion ? yes, billion with a b ? a year. The Signature Awards honored some spectacular women. Each woman had an extraordinary story that I was lucky enough to hear firsthand. I want to share two in particular. The first honoree of the night was Nadini Mukherjee, the founder of Indian Bread Co. Nadini?s vision was to create a company that married the Indian flavors with the portability and convenience of the American sandwich.

The "F" Word
2008-03-18 03:12:00
No, I?m not going to write a whole blog post about an explicative. The ?F? word I?m referring to is feminism ? a term that can send shivers up the spines of legions of women as they imagine angry women sitting around plotting how to eradicate men. That?s not the kind of feminism I?m talking about, or, I think, even really think exists. But I will tell you about a breed of feminism that does exist.

Why Lipstick Jungle gives good career advice
2008-03-08 05:03:00
If you are a woman reading the news this week, it hasn't been easy on the eyes. On Sunday, there was the Washington Post piece by Charlotte Allen about how women are not that smart. Penelope Trunk, the author of Brazen Career ist and a generally on-target career sage, leapt onto the fear-mongering train and wrote a Boston Globe article called Want to have a baby? Now is the time about how women in their 20s should be more focused on finding a mate than making on making it to the C-Suite. Her take is that your career will always be there, but your eggs won't. And the Lori Gottlieb Marry Him! The case for settling for Mr. Good Enough rant in this month's Atlantic has continued to pop up in women's inboxes across American with notes that say, "This is so depressing. But is it true?" But ignore all of that. The big media takeaway this week is not about any of those stories. It's from NBC's Lipstick Jungle . Yes, this is the week where the female media coverage has been so dismal...

Obama is NOT the first woman president
2008-03-04 16:00:00
As voters in Texas, Ohio, Vermont, and Rhode Island go to the polls today to cast votes that could determine the Democratic nominee, I wouldn't want them to be confused that casting a vote for Senator Barack Obama is akin to casting a vote for the first woman president. This was an argument made by Martin Linsky in a Newsweek column last week. Linsky's thesis is a play on the famous categorization of Bill Clinton as the first African American president by the African American writer Toni Morrison. Linsky argues that Obama uses trademark "female" leadership qualities -- commitment to inclusiveness, deep optimism, modesty about knowing all the answers, the courage to deliver uncomfortable news, not taking on all the work alone, and a willingness to air dirty linen. I'd like to parse out those qualities and clarify why Senator Hillary Clinton is our first female candidate.

Proposing to a man, How to fake being a feminist, and Extreme Brides
2008-02-29 16:00:00
Happy leap year everyone! So today is the only day of the year that women are "permitted" to propose to a man, according to ancient folklore. So on that note, the Times UK has a good piece today called What happen when the woman proposes. According to the article, this is a trend that might pick up speed. ?I expect that more women than ever will be proposing in 2008,? says Dr Sheri Jacobson, a relationship counsellor at Harley Therapy in London. ?I think that attitudes are shifting and there's more room for women to assert themselves.? How much more room can there be? ?Women might seize on this chance to propose if they were already entertaining the idea and either want to get things moving quicker, use it to express their deep affection, or feel they want to take charge.? Perhaps that's true. But most women I know won't even ask a guy out or call to confirm a date. What do you all think? Would you first a) Ask a guy out or b) Propose to a guy?

Bitches get stuff done
2008-02-25 16:00:00
That's what Tina Fey, the amazingly talented writer cum actress, said on Saturday Night Live in response to all the "Hillary Clinton is a bitch" rhetoric. She goes on to lump herself and Amy Poehler, the ever-versatile comedian who is the anchor of Weekend Update, into the "bitch" category. She ends empathetically with the line, "Bitches get stuff done." Bitches do get stuff done. And why is that? Bitches aren't afraid to be direct, t0-the-point, precise, and unapologetic about what they want. While we have been brainwashed to think that bitch is a euphemism for someone who could have the Devil Wears Dior written about her, it seems that many women that are, unfortunately, misread when it comes to the b-word. These "bitches" are women that decide to give up their people pleasing habit, don't qualify everything with "I'm sorry," make decisions based on facts not feelings, and realize that being a doormat and a pushover are not the way to move ahead in the workplace. But don'...

Networking 101, 201, and 301
2008-02-21 16:00:00
Last night I had the privilege of speaking on a panel at Columbia University called "Beyond Networking " 101 that was sponsored by the Center for Career Education. While the panel was meant to hone in on the basics, the conversation touched on issues that would be appropriate for an advanced class on networking. So with further delay, I wanted to share you with all of you some best parts of the discussion. Friend requesting is not networking -- While social networks are great, to build a long-term relationship with a contact, it's imperative to meet in person.Returning the favor to someone much higher up -- This question came up from a number of audience members. Since networking is a reciprocal relationship, if you are asking someone many rungs above you on the ladder for help, what can you offer them? Laila Khan, a vice president at GE , said that at many companies, like hers, managers are rewarded and recognized for taking on mentoring roles, so don't feel that you have to retu...
Q: Why aren?t young women voting for Hillary? A: They haven?t been to the
2008-02-19 16:00:00
This election has been all about the under-30 crowd. If you had just arrived here from outer space, you might think that young people were the only ones who had the right to vote in this country. Time magazine even named it the year of the youth vote. However, there should be a bold asterisk next to that magazine?s title ? and all discussion about the youth vote, for that matter. It?s the year of the youth vote for Illinois Senator Barack Obama. In one of the best piece I?ve read on the election this primary season, Elizabeth Cline, an editor at nymag.com, parses out why college women consistently favor Obama over Senator Hillary Clinton in this New Republic piece.

The V-Day Vent: Why is it always about what men want?
2008-02-14 11:00:00
I think that Valentine's Day is sort of a silly holiday. I'm more into doing something for that special someone on a random Tuesday afternoon in November than on a day when the calendar mandates you to. Valentine's Day is really the lazy boyfriend/girlfriend's holiday. But that's not my vent. My vent is about how the media tackles the subject of the dating quest. Take exhibit A -- Laura Vanderkam's opinion piece in today's USA Today called The Perfect Match.
