Half the eastcoastlife - Weekend Snapshot #10
2008-02-12 03:48:00
Probably I was overworked before the Chinese New Year, ........ the preparations of the festival, the numerous deliveries of CNY goodies to my elders and business associates, clearing my payments and chasing for payments, the end-of-the-lunar-year meals and my father-in-law falling again the day before CNY eve...... my right shoulder was aching and my right hand was turning weak.I ignored it and on Saturday morning, I woke up with an extremely painful right shoulder and a very weak right hand. I didn't want to go to the hospital as it is considered inauspicious to be there during Chinese New Year. The Chinese physician whom I use to consult is also in festive mood, his clinic would only open on the 5th day of CNY (11th Feb).I applied a herbal ointment on the hurting part. On Sunday morning, the right side of my body was too painful to move. I was worried it might be a stroke but yet I endured the pain and waited for my Chinese physician to come back.First thing on Monday morning I ...

An hour before 12 midnight on every Chinese New Year's eve, there would be heavy human traffic at the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho (Goddess of Mercy) temple as devotees tried to be the first to offer incense sticks, hoping for good luck. It's believed that the first person to insert his incense sticks in the urn, on the first day of the Lunar New Year, would have exceptionally good luck.My hubby Chris goes to the temple to offer prayers every year but he's always never the first few in the queue. I hate going to that temple as there is not only heavy traffic, but the place is heavy with smoke from the incense burning! It's suffocating! The moment 12 midnight struck, with yellings of "huat ah! (prosper!! )", the devotees rushed forward, pushing one another in their haste to insert their incense sticks. It is very dangerous. The people don't care even if there are elderly folks in their midst!I cannot understand the devotees' persistence in wanting to be the first. Once the sticks are ...

ECL's Outdoor Bathroom - Weeekend Snapshot #9
2008-02-03 18:22:00
Jacuzzi tub for alien? hehe..... Besides shopping for Chinese New Year goodies, I also have to shop for furniture and bathroom fixtures for my new house.I want to have an outdoor bathroom, where there will be no roof above it, with lots of green plants surrounding me when I shower. I dream of showering under the stars...... like Jane of the jungle. When it rains, I can save on water. kakaka......But when it gets windy.......... how???? High above ground, with an ocean view. I cringe at the thought of myself crouching in the bushes, shivering as I try to wash off the soap suds and shampoo.......... it doesn't seem like a good idea after all.Peeping Tom!? Nay. He would have to be Spiderman to do that. And which man in his right mind would want to peep at a flabby middle-aged woman who can throw a mean chopper? He had better go goggle for Hong Kong celebrity, Edison Chen's (陈 冠 希) sex scandal photos. tsk tsk tsk....Example of an outdoor bathroomAny one wants to make my dream c...

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has selected Singapore as the one of two candidates in the final shortlist. The other bidding cities are Turin, Athens and Bangkok. The community is rallying behind our bid to host the first-ever Youth Olympic Games . Moscow and Singapore emerged tops in governance and guarantees, finance, the Youth Olympic Village, competition venues and transport. There will be some 3,500 athletes, from ages 14 to 18, competing in 26 sports events in the Youth Olympic Games .At the same time, these athletes who come from very different cultures, speak different languages but share a love of sports will be taking part in education and cultural programmes. Narrow Street of Jiufen, Taiwan - Photo Hunt
2008-02-01 12:20:00
During one trip to Taiwan , I brought Jaymes and my students to Jiufen (九份),a popular tourist attraction on a hill. It was once a prosperous mining town but sank into oblivion when mining was stopped. Interest was revived again when a movie director fell in love with the old streets and mining village. Award winning Taiwanese film, 'A City of Sadness' (悲情城市) was filmed here.We took a train(NT80 each) from Taipei Main Station to Ruifang. I bought biandang (packed food boxes, NT60 each) to eat on the train. Each packet of rice has a braised egg, pork chop & vegetables. We took a public bus (NT20 each) in front of Ruifang train station. The view in Jiufen, from the hill was amazing. The day was quite warm. We walked along a long & narrow winding lane of shops & eateries. Occasionally there would be a car, small truck or motorcycle passing through it, sending everyone to scurry to the sides. The street is so narrow that we were pressed to the walls. There were ma...

Waxed duck!? Hairless Gigolo?
2008-01-31 04:40:00
Waxed meat stall in ChinatownWaxed duck and waxed meat are imported from China. I can only buy them a month before Chinese New Year. You don't see them at any other time.Long long ago, in China, there was no refrigerator to store meats, so the clever Chinese thought of ways to preserve their meat for a longer time. Besides air-drying, they can also be smoked. The methods of preserving meat without refrigeration have passed down for a few thousand years. Besides duck and pork, they preserved chicken and fish too and the internal organs of the fowls. The meats are marinated with salt and/or wine, spices for a night and left to air-dry in the dry winds during winter in December, when the sun is up, for days. As the 12th month in Chinese Lunar calendar is called la yue (腊月) , so the waxed meats are called la rou (腊肉).According to a Chinese friend, from autumn to winter in many villages, we can see meats hanging on poles on every available space - in the garden, at the back yar...

Singaporeans flocking to God of Fortune in Eunos!

God of Fortune at Eunos is going to be swamped with people from all corners of Singapore!! God of Fortune gave out S$250,000!!A resident of Eunos won S$250,000 after betting on the 4-digit number that he 'caught' on the first night of the carnival. Jostling with more than 600 people for a sprinkling of good fortune, this lucky resident give his thanks on Sunday night by offering a roast pig and engaging a lion dance troupe, which cost him S$1,000 altogether. Please!!! The winner's not my hubby. So please stop calling and emailing to ask.According to my sources, he gathered his family and spent S$100 to bet on the number. It came out the top prize. Envious fellow Singaporeans are speculating that he might have won S$500,000.This is one lucky man!A happy MP Dr Ong Seh Hong of Marine Parade GRC was present at the thanksgiving ceremony on Sunday night. He said an auspicious time and location was picked by a Fengshui Master to set up the 10m high God of Fortune statue. That was why ...

Head East to Seek Good Fortune and Good Food - Weekend Snapshot #8
2008-01-28 02:25:00
The crowd stretching their hands out for a sprinkling of good fortune! My foreign guests were treated to an unusual itinerary of seeing how Singaporeans live in the heartlands and a sampling of gastronomic delights at where I live - the east side of Singapore. We have the famous Katong Laksa, yummy custard puffs and half-boiled eggs with kaya toast for breakfast. My guests come from Seoul, they like their food spicy and boy... they can really eat! After breakfast we have a leisurely stroll along Katong, where they were introduced to the Peranakan heritage. For lunch we drove to Geylang, the famous red-light district in Singapore to look for chicken and duck. hahaha........ We had roast duck, roast chicken and crispy pork at Garren Duck. Boss Boon Cheng is a jovial young man who is famous for his roast meats in Geylang.I chance upon his eatery one day while bringing Jaymes on a tour of Geylang last December. I hesitated at first to enter the eatery as it looked dirty and cramped. When ...

Old-fashioned Singapore - Photo Hunt
2008-01-25 15:31:00
I'm having foreign visitors in town and they wanted to see old-fashioned Singapore . I brought them to Chinatown for dinner and to have a feel of our Chinese New Year mood. There are lots of old-fashioned buildings in Chinatown. The modern kids find old-fashioned entertainment amusing. There was a puppet show. I enjoyed watching roadside puppet shows when I was 6. It was the only interesting entertainment for us village kids then, our families couldn't even afford black and white TVs then. I rarely see such traditional puppet shows these days.Old-fashioned candyThese were the sweets we offered to our guests who visited during Chinese New Year 30 years ago. Candied lotus root, chestnut, winter melon, lotus seed, persimmon..... etc. Nowadays, kids prefer expensive chocolates and fancy candies.Photo Hunt photohunt

Bullying at school is nothing new
2008-01-24 05:05:00
Bullying at school is an age-old problem and many took the "children will be children" attitude towards the problem. Bullying is about one thing: the strong taking unfair advantage of the weak. The problem exists in all schools. And now it seems teachers and principals are turning into bullies too.MP Lily Neo and chairperson for Government Parliamentary Committee for Education said, " School bullies are increasing and becoming bolder, brainier "My son Jaymes was a victim of school bullying, from primary to secondary school. He was small in size and meek. When the bullying started in Primary 2, he didn't dare to tell me. My parents-in-law noticed that his shirt was usually scribbled on and dirtied with coloured crayons. At first we thought he did it or he must have done something to deserve it. But words like 'idiot' and 'stupid' were written on the back of his shirt. I then dismissed it as children's pranks. We advised Jaymes to avoid conflicts with his clas...

Jaymes and ECL with Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and MP Lim Biow Chuan. The whole family woke up at 6am to set up booth at our constituency's Town Day. My husband who is a grassroot leader, was 'thrown' a booth to sell something. Within 2 days, we made a mad rush to get products ready for our booth. We set up the booth before 8am. The weather was cool in the morning, but turned hot later. It was great to see many residents with their families turning up at the event. The children enjoyed themselves the most at the game stalls, They were also treated to free cotton candy, Milo beverage, balloons and snacks.Several residents' committees have set up booths to sell Chinese New Year products, food and gift items. There were exhibitions by NEA (National Environment Agency), Singapore Police Force, NLB (National Library Board) and LTA (Land & Transport Authority). There was subsidised health screening (S$2) for the residents too. Residents queuing for health screening. This event'...

Important - Save Lives Chris receiving his award from Mayor Matthias YaoMy husband has been a regular blood donor for years. He donates blood at least twice annually. He received a Bronze Award for 25 Blood Donation last year. (Silver Award - 50 blood donations and Gold, 100.) Of course, my husband doesn't donate blood just to get the awards. lol Singapore needs an average of 350 units of blood daily. All blood collected is distributed to hospitals for various purposes. Blood is needed during bone marrow transplants for leukaemia patients, for thalasemia patients needing regular blood transfusions, during daily surgeries and for accident victims. It takes 45 minutes for a blood donation, and it is painless.A “Birthday Programme” has been launched. It wants to highlight to blood donors that even if they donate blood just once a year, they can help save the lives of many. Make a Pledge to Help the Nation on Your Birthday! Be a Blood Donor. Sex Video Scandal in Singapore? Resign!!
2008-01-17 14:06:00
Not eastcoastlife's lah.A Singapore an Member of Parliament, Baey Yam Keng wrote on his blog :If the recent sex video scandal involving a Malaysian Minister were to happen in S’pore, would the person have to resign too?His view:"Personally, I am not too sure that it would be the case. I would look at what the person has done as a Minister and MP. If he or she is doing the job well, I would not really mind. This is afterall their private life and it is unfortunate that it became public. I do not expect them to be saints and for this matter, it is a betrayal of faith with the spouse and family. If they can accept it and life goes on, should we, as outsiders, impose our judgement and demand a resignation?"Datuk Chua S L (Malaysia's former Health Minister) did quite a lot of work for the Health Ministry, but the people cannot forgive him for his sex video scandal. The disgraced Minister was forced to resign. My hubby and many guys I spoke to support MP Baey's view. "Adultery is immor...

Preparing to live life anew

I don't make new year resolutions as I don't keep them. haha.... I have a thirst for life and when I come across new and exciting things, I do try them.Asians are used to working all their life, they don't know how to have fun. So when they come to retirement age, many don't know what to do, with so much time on their hands. It is important to keep mind and body active. I'm rediscovering hobbies that I once loved, learning line dancing and a new language. At the same time, I'm making new friends. Life is filled with many wonderful experiences. It is never too late to learn and explore.Besides having fun, don't forget to plan for your financial future. These senior citizens posed for a picture before their cat-walk during SICEX.To market, to market on a gleaming new tricycle!Floor Ball for senior citizens, maybe when I'm in my 70s. Skinny women in skinny jeans are some kind of people many of us love to hate. No matter how much they eat, they never seem to get fat. While the rest of us obsess over every tiny bit of food passing through our lips, sigh....... we’ll put on the kilos if we let our guard down for just one moment.I couldn't believe it when a student showed me the skinny houses she discovered in Amsterdam.Amsterdam is known for it’s tightly-packed and skinny structures. These houses located along a canal, are about a metre wide each. They expand as they recede from the street. I wonder how it feels to live in such skinny space.Oh, I just learnt from her too that a coffee prepared with skimmed milk is described as skinny. hehe.....*blush*Photo Hunt photohunt

Warding off Evil Spirits in Hotel Rooms
2008-01-10 04:20:00
I'm sure many people have heard of the presence of evil spirits in some hotel rooms. I used to stay in many hotels during my business trips and have never met one. Oops..... shouldn't say that. *piak piak my big mouth* Pray please DON'T let me see one!Three years ago, I was introduced to a Taiwanese Fengshui Master in Kaoshiung. When he heard that I often stay alone in a hotel room, he told me to do the following. Before entering a hotel room, knock first to inform whatever was in the room that you are going in.Look for a Bible or Religious Book (经书), turn to any page and leave it open, on your bedside table. Most hotel provides a bible. Keep a pair of slippers at the end of my bed. According to him, the bed forms a circle around me when I sleep. As I'm considered a beauty.... ahem ahem....... male spirits tend to bother me more. If an evil spirit descends on me, I would be rendered paralyse. It could then do whatever it wants. So by leaving a pair of slippers at the end of t...
