Motivational Sayings
2007-03-13 20:41:00 If you’re like me then you can’t stand those framed “motivational posters” that you see hanging up in businesses. The reason those posters make me so mad is the simple fact that the company displaying the posters is never going to work as hard for you as they want you to do for them. Let’s be ... I want to grow a Tree: Recursion in ASP.Net using VB.NET
2007-03-08 05:19:00 What is recursion? Sound scary? It’s not, in fact you actually end up writing less code by using this programming technique. It’s a perfect example of that working smarter not harder thing. Simply put; recursion is when a function calls itself. Recursion is well suited to hierarchical data structures like organization ... St. Patrick was an Irish Slave!
2007-03-06 00:45:02 Did you know… St. Patrick (the Christian missionary regarded as the patron saint of Ireland) was born in Britain and at age sixteen was captured by Iris h raiders and taken as a slave to Ireland! Patrick escaped six years later, returned to Britain, and joined the church. Patrick worked his way through the ranks, becoming a deacon and a bishop, then headed back to Ireland as a missionary! Patrick worked as a missionary in Ireland for many years and is attributed with laying the foundations of Irish Christianity. Later Patrick was deemed the patron saint of Ireland! Now we celebrate the day of his death by drinking green beer. Does that seem strange to anyone else? PS…Patrick is commonly believed to have lived to be 120 years old. How To Flush Your Water Heater
2007-03-04 12:43:01 eJabs suggests flushing your water heater once every six months on average. This will need to be done more in some areas and less in others, but six months is the average. Over time, your heater can accumulate sediment consisting of sand, gravel, and various mineral deposits. This buildup can reduce the amount your water heater holds, create a variety of interesting noises, and reduce the efficiency of your unit. The buildup of sediment at the bottom can harden and sometimes clog the drain valve. Follow this process to safely and thoroughly drain and flush your hot water heater: Turn off the heater! If your unit is gas, set the gas valve to “Pilot” to prevent the burners from coming on while you are flushing it. If your heater is electric be sure to turn off the circuit breakers. If the water level drops below the heating elements and the thermostat turns the elements on, the heating elements will probably burn out... More About: How To , Your , Water , Flush , Heat
eJabs Upgrade to 2.1.2 Successful
2007-03-04 06:42:01 I’m sure you’ve probably heard…but if you haven’t…if you upgraded your Wordpress installation to 2.1.1, then you’re at risk to a security hole in the code. The 2.1.1 code was compromised and needs to be upgraded immediately. Although I never upgraded eJabs to 2.1.1, I did want to upgrade. My traffic has slowed down a little (probably because I haven’t been posting as much…been busy), so I used this opportunity to upgrade to the new 2.1.2. Good news: all my plugins work, and the upgrade was pretty seamless! More About: Success
Matthias Jabs and Matthew Jabs
2007-03-04 06:42:01 As I’ve written about in previous posts, my family is of German decent. Actually, my father was born in Germany and came to the U.S. at six years old making me a first generation American! Being of German decent, of course, gives me a German name: “Jabs” pronounced in German as “Yaaps”. Matt hew in German is spoken as Matthias , making my German name Matthias Jabs. Well…it just so happens that I’m not the only Matthias Jabs in the world (big surprise). If there are any Scorpions fans out there, you may be privy to the fact that The Scorpions lead guitarist’s name is also Matthias Jabs. This post isn’t going to give you any great information…it is just a random piece of information that I wanted to let everyone know! Actually, sometimes I’ll get messages (either IM, or email) asking me, “Are you Matt Jabs from the Scorpions?” It always cracks me up so I figured I would share it with you all…enjoy... Why the Racial Titles?
2007-03-03 12:40:05 This post was inspired by an article by RT Cunningham. My father was born in “The Fatherland”, Germany, in 1950. At age six he & his father, mother, and 6 siblings boarded an airplane headed for the United States of America; the land of the free and the home of the brave! My grandfather had no previous experience with the English language and had never driven a car, but he did have a skill. He was a finish carpenter. Once in the United States, my family received their “green cards” and followed the process for becoming a U.S. citizen. Even before they acquired their formal citizenship (years later), they now considered themselves Americans! They did not require anyone to call them “German-Americans”, they were simply, just as everyone else, Americans. Being one generation removed from Germany, I am an American citizen because of my birth in this wonderful country. I also do not require the title “German-American”, I am simply... Natural Ways to get Better Sleep
2007-03-03 12:40:05 On the same subject as my recent article Can exercise help cure Insomnia?, I have been doing more research on the sleep/Insomnia issues that seem to be rocking the U.S. Why can’t we sleep? Well…that’s an entirely different post! Maybe I’ll tackle that one in days to come. Today I’m going to focus on natural ways we can get better sleep. You may be interested to know, a recent study conducted at the University of Chicago showed that, on average, most people spend about seven and a half hours sleeping or trying to sleep. Plus, those who sleep six to seven hours a night actually live longer than people who sleep less than four hours or more than eight hours, according to a study conducted by the American Cancer Society and the University of California, San Diego.*** When I discovered the above facts I was especially surprised to learn that people who sleep between 6 and 7 hours, live longer than people who sleep more than 8 hours! PHPList or Mailman?
2007-03-03 12:40:05 I have recently been charged with the task of implementing a company newsletter/email marketing software to be used for several purposes. Firstly, the software will be used as a marketing tool to send out “list” emails to potential customers in an attempt to have them sign up for our company newsletter. Secondly, the newsletter itself will then be managed in the software and will be sent out to list members. Finally, my employer would like to be able to track “who opened what”, “who clicked on what”, etc. for reporting purposes. Of course this should all be implemented incurring as little cost as possible. With all these factors in consideration, and because our website is hosted on a Linux box, I am looking for some type of open source list handling software. In my searches, I have come across two options that seem to handle the necessary functionality as far as I can tell. With all this said, the two software options I’m considering ar... How to order tuple(s) (double, triple, quadruple, etc.)
2007-03-03 12:40:05 Haven’t you ever wondered the exact wording and order of such terms? Sure…we all know up through quadruple…but then what’s next? Is it quintuple? Well let’s find out; and while we’re at it let’s discover this numeric sequence all the way up to 10 (I love this type of trivia)! First of all, let us define the terminolgy behind such numeric terms. The tuple is basis for our “ordered list”. Defined, a tuple is a mathematical term meaning: a finite sequence (also known as an “ordered list”) of objects, each of a specified type. Order ed from one to ten, the list appears as follows and are all most commonly pronounced as too?p?l: 0 - Tuple (empty) 1 - Single (or singleton or sole or only - many others) 2 - Double (or pair or twice) 3 - Trip le (or triplet or treble or thrice or threesome or troika or trio) 4 - Quad ruple 5 - Quintuple or Pentuple 6 - Sextuple or Hextuple 7 - Septuple 8 - Octuple 9 - Nonuple 10 - Decuple ... Weekly Blog in the Spotlight
2007-03-03 12:40:05 I’m initiating a new continuing post series here at eJabs…the “Week ly Blog in the Spot light”. I believe this will be personally enlightening, and will also be beneficial for the bloggers featured here. My initial entries will be bloggers who I have already developed a relationship with; people who write blogs that I admire, respect, and aspire to. I believe this will also be a post series of value to my readership; giving them access to great information without having to dig for it. So without further ado…the inaugural “Weekly Blog in the Spotlight ” is Untwisted Vortex run by RT Cunningham. RT writes with a lot of passion and a lot of knowledge. One of my favorite things about Untwisted Vortex is controversial posting. RT is not afraid to be “politically incorrect” and always adds his personal slant on the chosen topic. That is appreciated by more people than one can imagine…being that we’re all so sick and tire... More About: Light

Negotiating your salary: Who?s on top now?
2007-03-03 12:40:05 As it turns out most of us work for a living. Meaning, somewhere along the way we’ll spend huge sums of time and money toward college degrees; hours sculpting the perfect resume (in some cases multiple resumes to cast those subtle but, important differing professional nuances). We schlep from place to place talking to jerks, jokes, and good people about their job openings. We put days or weeks into interviews, struggling to top the candidate pools. The most important part, the driving reason for all this –GETTING PAID–we often handle in 60 seconds or less! Consider the following scenario: You have met Mr. Employer for the first time, he has your resume in hand, walks you into his office, makes some small talk, glances at your resume, some more cheesy chatter ensues to ensure him you’re the best candidate etc.. then WHAMMO! Mr. Employer asks “What sort of salary are you looking for?” What do you do? Following the first rule of salary negotiat... More About: Your , Sala , Salary
Add Javascript confirm to Linkbutton
2007-03-03 12:40:05 It seems to go without saying that if an item can be deleted from a website that a confirm box should appear asking, “Do you really want to delete this?”. It’s bad design. Users appreciate the chance to cancel a permanent action like a delete. Surprisingly, it happens frequently maybe due to laziness or lack of know how especially on the web. Well here goes: Fortunately, all ASP.NET Web controls provide an Attributes property that provides a collection of attributes for the rendered HTML element along with the attributes’ values. The Attributes property has an Add(key, value) method that can be used to add a new attribute and value to an existing Web control. Therefore, to add the appropriate Java Script to the Link button Web control, we could add the following code: Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, _ ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load ‘only need to add the attribute on the first page load. If (Not Page.IsPostBack) The... More About: Javascript , Button
Can exercise help cure Insomnia?
2007-02-24 00:38:01 I have a co-worker (someday I’ll be a professional blogger!) who claims she gets between 1-3 hours of sleep each night. I’m not sure if that is physically possible? Maybe she’s just trying to get a little attention; but I’d like to address the topic all the same considering 1 in 3 adults suffer from some form of Insomnia . So…I’ll start this post by urging two of my blogging colleagues, both running personal fitness blogs, to give us their opinions on this matter. Stephen and Jason: Can you give us a more educated point of view on this topic? Also, Samm (organic conscious mother & blogger)…what do you think? Here’s a little background on my experience with Insomnia and exercise. In my personal life, if I: exercise in the morning, I sleep like a baby at night exercise after work, in the evening, I find it a little harder to sleep; unless I give myself around 3-5 hours to “wind down” don’t exercise at all, I ... 4 simple ways to revive tired eyes
2007-02-23 18:37:01 Samantha Yeap of Organic Parade has posted a great article on how to exercise your eyes! Her suggestions are wonderful, and easy to perform. It only took me about 2-3 minutes to complete, and my eyes really do feel a lot better. Thanks Samantha! May I also suggest putting used tea bags on your eyes for a few minutes? This always make my eyes feel better, and is supposed to help rid you of those dreaded dark circles under your eyes. Anybody have any other suggestions?
