Metta Charity Walk cum Family Carnival 2008
2008-06-09 13:13:00
8 June 2008At 8am, my Aunt, Mother and I reported to the Volunteers registration booth at Metta School [32 Simei Street 1]. The Volunteer Executive, Eilynn, handed us our Tshirt and directed us to our booth. The Metta Charity Walk cum Family Carnival is an annual event organised to raise funds for the Metta Welfare Association. The Carnival sees booths set up by various business owners and volunteers who donates all proceeds generated to charity. I had attended and volunteered for the previous year. This year, I brought along my family and had fun doing our part for charity.Since we were early, we browsed the Happy Arts Deli cafe for breakfast. The cafe features vegetarian delicacies. When the boxes arrived for our booth, we began unpacking the Lavender products from the Gift Cottage. I watched along as Mother and Aunt discussed over what was the best layout for the booth. A great opportunity for the two adults to immerse themselves with hands-on training for entrepreneurship. The Gue...

Getting the Juice of Creativity to Spill
2008-06-02 17:40:00
Had lunch with Ong at his residence. It had been a long time since we met.The best way to unleash the creativity juice is to really step out of the usual environment and to engage in a meaningful and constructive conversation. Recall when you had a conversation with someone and you just built an idea on top of an idea smoothly. Yes! That's the feeling I'm talking about.Ideas spurned out as we chatted. Grooved and ready for a whole new series of adventure...

Eunos Youth Nite 2008
2008-05-28 19:55:00
27 May 2008 After sending BH to school in the morning, I went to do a last minute shopping for Youth Nite. Since Jinfu and Zul was already arranging the chairs in the hall, Brenda and I decided to have lunch later and we rushed to Eunos Community Club.Youth Nite is organised by the Eunos Youth Executive Committee (YEC) as part of the 1-week long celebrations for the Silver Jubilee of Eunos CC. Brenda was the organising chairman for Youth Nite while Zul (programme manager), Ming Choo (publicity), Madeline (registration) and I (stage manager) assisted in the making of the event, together along with other members of the Eunos YEC.From 12.30pm, YEC members were already present to do up the decoration and the setting up of the hall. I helped Brenda with the script of her maiden speech; then blow up balloons with Rahayu; enjoyed the rehearsals of the artistes and performers. At 7.30pm, while Wu Jia Hui was doing sound check, the queue of audiences was already building up.The Guest-of-Honou...

Eunos CC 25th Anniversary Celebrations
2008-05-25 10:34:00
25 May 2008At 8am, Grassroots leaders of Eunos Constituency flocked into the Community Club and had a breakfast to prepare them for the carnival that is going to take place later in the day. Eunos Community Club was celebrating its Silver Jubilee with a one-week long celebration. The event is organised by Eunos Community Club with Eunos Zone 1, 2 and 3 Residents' Committees (RCs)The backdrop of the stage is a kampong-style atap house. At both sides of the hall, there were projectors screening a slideshow of photos, some dated as early as 1983.By 9am, there was a long queue of Eunos residents awaiting to collect their goodie bags. 500 goodie bags were given out in the day and 500 in the evening. Eunos YEC and Zone 3 RC worked hand in hand to distribute the goodie bags to the residents.Mayor of Northeast CDC and Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mayor Zainul flagged off 25 bicycles which pedalled around the estate. The up and coming event that Eunos YEC is organising as pa...

Pedra Branca belongs to Singapore!
2008-05-24 08:46:00
23 May 2008As a Singapore an, today marks an important day. The 28-year dispute over the Pedra Branca is resolved. Pedra Branca belongs to Singapore!Watching the International Court of Justice ruling live on Channel NewsAsia, I was paying close attention with ears wide to what the Judge was trying to read out from his script. It took about 2 hours before he finally announced that Pedra Branca belongs to Singapore; Middle Rocks go to Malaysia and South Ledge ownership would depend on the International Sea Boundaries. 12 judges agreed that Pedra Branca belongs to Singapore while 4 disagreed. In my opinion, the judge ruling on the matter displayed signs of diplomatic gestures. Singapore takes Pedra Branca while Malaysia takes Middle Rocks. The ICJ leaves both parties to work out on South Ledge. It seems like the most optimum "win-win" situation that could possibly work out. Professor Tommy Koh, ambassador-at-large, had previously mentioned that the ICJ should not worry about diplomatic c...
Mobile Healthcare Services
2008-05-22 17:59:00
22 May 2008As the morning brightens the day, I rushed myself to my Aunt's place to bring my Grandmother for her regular medical appointment. Since I am having a long vacation now, I thought it was a good idea to relieve my Aunt.At 8.40am sharp, 3 personnels from APAC Mobile Health care Services came. They carried Grandmother on a mat and placed her on a stretcher. After loading the stretcher into the ambulance, the maid and I tagged along. This was the first time I sat in an ambulance, albeit a private one. This ambulance was driven by a crew of dedicated and passionate staff. Through my observation, I find that they are very detailed and meticulous. Really admire their professionalism. The usual limelight on the healthcare industry falls on the well-qualified doctors, professional nurses, and emergency rescue personnels. They are the heroes in numerous dramas and movies. Yet, few would look up to these diligent group of people that delivers immobile patients to and fro hospitals.APAC...

Motorcycle Riding Licence Class 2B @ CDC
2008-05-20 17:28:00
After registration for the Motorcycle Riding Licence Class at ComfortDelGro Driving Centre (CDC), it took only 4 days of waiting to commence on the first practical lesson. The enrolment and theory fee is S$80.25. The Class 2B course caters for motorcycles not exceeding 200cc.The proper attire required for the practical lessons includes long pants, shoes and gloves. Gloves can be purchased at the centre for S$1. After buying one pair, I found the quality of the gloves to be quite bad. Similar to durian gloves. For the first lesson, there is an orientation 1 hour before commencement of lesson. I was accompanied by Emmaneul, an interesting friend that I got to befriend. The instructor went throught the proper procedures and safety guidelines. When Lesson 1 started, we donned the helmets, elbow and knee guards as well as the gloves. The newbies wore the helmet that the school provided while the others, knowing that the sharing of helmets can be quite disgusting if not unhygienic, brought ...
Cheap Game Consoles at IOI Plaza
2008-05-17 13:23:00
15 May 2008I found my way to IOI Plaza (Singapore) in the morning for the purpose of procuring a Playstation Portable (PSP). According to a lead, I was told that I can obtain a PSP at a shop at the Plaza for a very competitive price. When I reached the outside of Qisahn office, I was hesitant to enter since it did not look like a retail shop. Nevertheless, I entered the premise and sat down and waited to be tended to. Within a few minutes, it was my turn and I entered a room where I was asked for my order. The PSP with screen protector costs a mere S$273. All the PSPs were modified.Important point: Bring Cash because they do not accept cashless payments. There is one POSB ATM situated at the ground floor of the building.Other than PSP, Qisahn also sells PS3, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS at competitive prices. After my IOI Plaza trip, went with Bao Hui for a, well, predicted surprise...More Information:IOI Plaza is situated at 210 Middle Road (S) 188994, right opposite Sunshine Plaza.Qis...

Reactions to the Sichuan Quake
2008-05-17 12:37:00
Over the past few days, the unfortunate Sichuan earthquake disaster provided headlines for the newspapers. A Current Affairs programme, Frontline, by MediaCorp Channel 8 featured the event by interviewing Singaporeans who were caught up in the airport at Sichuan about their experience.A man who was interviewed was seen speaking with tears rolling in the eyes. His words were spoken with deep emotions. If I were to watch the interview and keeping the volume muted, I would have thought he had probably lost his families in the disaster. His predicament: he was stuck in the airport as flight schedules were delayed. He lamented at the authorities for not providing information. He was apparently angered by the fact that he had to spend hours strangled at the airport of his holiday destination. He would later return to Singapore via a transit at Hong Kong.I was irritated by watching the interview. I don't know whether one should blame the programme crews for featuring such a parochial citi...

The Lees VS The Chees
2008-05-12 18:25:00
12 May 2008The Court hearing of the defamation case brought up by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew against Dr. Chee Soon Juan (Secretary-General of Singapore Democratic Party), Chee Siok Chin (Central Executive Committee Member of SDP) and the SDP starts today.PM, MM Lee had sued "Dr Chee Soon Juan and the party's leadership for repeating remarks alleging that they were corrupt and had covered up wrongdoings at the NKF."For the critics of the PAP regime, this case would again highlight the repression of Opposition Parties by defamation suits. Not too long ago, former Secretary-General of Workers' Party, Joshua Benjamin Jeyaratnam was bankrupted via a series of lawsuits. In Singapore, being a bankrupt automatically disqualifies one to stand for elections. For this defamation case, the worst case scenario would be that both Dr. Chee and Ms. Chee could be bankrupted. If SDP could not pay up the damages, it could also face the inevitable outcome of being ...

Project YEAH 2008 Media Launch
2008-05-11 18:21:00
10 May 2008Started the day off by attending the Media Launch of Project Youth Entrepreneur @ Aljunied and Hougang (YEAH). Held at Bishan Junction 8 open gallery at the 3rd floor, there were exhibits from various institutions including Singapore Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Innova Junior College, Anderson Junior College, Victoria Junior College, etc. Singer and entrepreneur Genie's music school had a booth too.Among the exhibits, what caught my attention was the booth by Innova JC. The students were selling custom-made pin badges. According to the teacher, the school had patent over the gadget which was used to make the badges. With one simple touch on the lever, the badge is done. I bought two badges, one of which I penned a quote and gave it to Bao Hui.Another booth worth a mention was the booth by Anderson JC students. They were selling T-shirts that they had designed, together with this small cute little plant [see picture below]....

No More Singing
2008-05-08 23:36:00
8 May 2008 marks the end of my Examinations as a freshie in the National University of Singapore.Today I realised that sometimes singing could really be an irritant. Even though music soothes the ears and calms the soul (except the hard rock music), singing it out is another issue altogether. As such I pledged not to sing anymore. After the paper today, had Chicken Rice dinner with Bao Hui. She was busy for the night with her project discussions though. Also went to Bugis Top One for my last singing session. It is really a good singing venue, not only in the economical sense, but also there is proper hygiene. For instance, all microphones are covered with fresh covers and the rooms don't reek of cigarette "aroma". Bugis Top One is situated directly opposite Bugis Junction, just beside Tan Quee Lan Street.

Stop Dating Violence
2008-05-06 19:50:00
6 May 2008Went to comb the NUS library for some good reads after examination today when I found this interesting booth display at the entrance.Entitled "Stop Dating Violence ", the booth highlighted several indicators of an abusive relationship including "being insulted or called names", "hit, grabbed, pushed, slapped, kicked, punched or burnt", etc. It also described what is a healthy relationship and how one can protect oneself from violence.I find the message that the booth sought to convey as rather fresh, apparently deviating from the usual emphasis on promoting awareness of family violence. Now the focus is on BGRs.The Caption "Love Shouldn't Hurt" sums it all up.For more information on Dating Violence (as well as take a quiz to find out whether you are a victim of Dating Violence), please log on to http://www.family.gov.sg/stopfamilyviolen ce

What I did on Shutdown Singapore 2008
2008-05-04 06:59:00
May 3 was marked the day of Shutdown Singapore 2008 .Description from FaceBook:"Shutdown Day is a Global Internet Experiment whose purpose is to get people to think about how their lives have changed with the increasing use of the home computer, and whether or not any good things are being lost because of this. The idea of Shutdown Day project is simple - just shutdown your computer for one whole day of the year and involve yourself in some other activities: outdoors, nature, sports, fun stuff with friends and family - whatever, just to remind yourself that there still exists a world outside your monitor screen. http://www.shutdownday.com/ "Had a late start in Shutting down the computer since I was using the computer past midnight the day before. After waking up in the morning, I went to prepare for my examinations while watching the television. It was only when I read the newspapers that I realised Shutdown = not just the computer but all electronic gadgets. Hence I would say I only...

fLAWS within
2008-04-24 16:23:00
The purpose of legislation is to primarily fix the flaws within society by bringing in justice. Laws are meant to be fair and equal, at least that's the view that the elites want everyone to believe in. However, there are plenty of flaws within the LAW which most people would tend to agree.Firstly, Laws favour those who know Law. Everyday, the poorly educated gets punished for not knowing Law. At the same time, those who are educated in the subject walks off getting richer with every mistakes that their opponents offend.Secondly, Laws favour those who are rich. It doesn't matter much if one does not know about Law that much. He would have just missed opportunities to extract compensations on certain occasions. With an adviser or a legal consultant, he could at the very least prevent too much harm from being inflicted upon him.Thirdly, Laws rely much on the judgment of a Man/Woman. Maybe sometimes a team of people i.e. the juries. Is there really fairness when personal prejudice an...

2008-04-18 07:09:00
12 April 2008 (Saturday)2pmKg Chai Chee Community CentreAfter joining Kg Chai Chee CC Toastmasters Club for 2 months, this event was the first Toastmasters contest that I attended, and participated as a contestant. The event was graced by the CCC Chairman of Kg Chai Chee CC.I realised that I was the youngest contestant and the youngest person in the whole hall. The contestants balloted for their order of appearance and took a seat as the event commenced.I was the first speaker for the English Speech category. My turn to speak was immediately after the refreshments, so I refrained from taking any food during the short break while taking deep breaths and wiping off my sweaty palms. I received my greatest encouragement from my Mother who came to support me, as well as a good-luck SMS from Bao Hui.I spoke on "Gratitude". Silent Gratitude means no Gratitude at all. My speech took me 6 minutes. Emotions kicked in while I was sharing my personal anecdotes and I thought that affected my pe...

Youth OUT!
2008-03-31 19:37:00
For weeks, the organising team at Eunos YEC had been working on the Youth OUT! project. For nights, we went round the precinct to publicise the event to youth and selling tickets.   This is my first time organising an event at the Grassroots level. The main difference between a school event and a Grassroots event is that in schools, the teacher is the guiding force and often gets many things done for the students; whereas for grassroots events, volunteers head the projects and we have to be responsible for our own dealings.   For my organising committee, I had Ming Choo, Jialing and Abdillah. Ming Choo proved to be of tremendous help. She created all the publicity materials from scratch -- designing logos to printing the banners and posters. She was also a good time checker, always ensuring that things get done by deadlines. With Jialing's help, we managed to liaise with the Vice Principal of Damai Secondary School and distributed publicity materials within the school...

Eunos Town Day
2008-03-23 21:29:00
After spending the entire Saturday preparing for Youth OUT!, I was back at Grassroots work at the Eunos Town Day event on Sunday morning. Held at the Old Temporary Market, the event was organised by Eunos Zone '1' RC.   My Zone was designated to man the "Children Fishing" station, so there I was facilitating and managing the children at the tank, timing them and at times scooping some fishes for those disappointed children who didn't manage to get any.   The queue of children never ceased to end throughout the event. Children fishing is a very attractive game and proud to say, it was introduced by my Zone into Eunos when we hosted the Eunos Precinct Day.   Initially I started off adhering very strictly to the rules and regulations of the games. Later learnt that it's a grassroots event and the main point is for the residents to enjoy, so I became flexible and even started playing with the kids. This is something enjoyable. Socially exciting!  ...
Youth OUT! Preparation
2008-03-21 20:12:00
19 March 2008Received the SMS from Jialing stating that the Vice Principal of Damai Secondary School would be free to meet up. So at half past noon, I arrived at my alma mater.Walking through the canteen, memories poured through the brain. At 1.05pm, the NT classes ended and there came Jialing and Rahayu. Together we went to see the VP, Mr Leow, who seems to be in his late thirties and exudes a friendly personality. He got us to sit inside the Principal's office and listened to the details of our event. After that, we had lunch at the school canteen. The chicken rice stall is the only stall that hadn't changed its owner and food. After 2 servings of lunch, we began to paste posters around the school. The 2 girls were tasked to also promote the event during morning assembly the next day.It was so coincidental that I saw Stacey and Wei Wen who came to school to visit the teachers. At 3pm, I embarked on the journey to Balloon Connexion, who sponsored 200 silver balloons for Youth OUT! ...

The Flattening World
2008-03-18 19:37:00
There is really no link between the title and what I'm going to be writing today. Got really inspired by Thomas L. Friedman's The World Is Flat. And I think Windows Live Mail is a must-have for all bloggers! So many events occurred in the past month. Not too long after visiting the Parliament House for the Budget Debate, the escape of the Mas Selamat bin Kastari began to hit the headlines for days. Conspiracy theorists added some humour to the matter with the various viewpoints such as 1) He's dead, search is a cover-up; 2) mobilise the police since they have been too complacent; 3) he's being tracked via an irremovable device so that he can lead the security forces to his den. I'd been to the Internal Security Department Exhibition Gallery. Not only now did I realise that I was then standing above detention cells. Following that unbelievable news that a terrorist escaped from the Gurkha-guarded installation, the Barisan Nasional of Malaysia lost the two-third majority...
Maiden Visit to the Parliament Gallery
2008-02-26 05:47:00
25 February 2008During my National Service, I had been to the Parliament House for security duties. Each time I was there, I was mesmerised by the majestic and supreme aura of the entity. Since then, I always wanted to visit the Parliament Gallery to listen to debates. Today I fulfilled my desire. After the first security check, I exchanged my identity card with the security pass. Then, another round of security check and I placed my belongings with mobile phone with the counter and proceeded to the 3rd floor. Prior to entering the Gallery, there was yet another round of security check.I was accompanied by a staff who asked if it was my first time here. She was helpful and brought me into the Gallery, bowing with me to the Speaker Mr Abdullah Tarmugi, before taking my seat. The seat armrest had a compartment for the earphones used when there is a need for translation. The Gallery was filled with students, Government officials, Parliament staff and the Police Security Command personnel...

We Care Charity Dinner @ Aljunied GRC (Eunos)
2008-02-19 17:12:00
Tuesday 19th February 2008 Attended We Care Charity Dinner @ Aljunied GRC (Eunos), Bliss Garden Restaurant, Singapore Expo at 7.30pm. The event was organised by Eunos Citizens' Consultative Committee. Of all the Chinese New Year Dinners, this one would rank the best in terms of food. The emcee for the event was an actress. "Alamak" Hui Ge also humoured the crowd with his impromptu Malay translation of the Chinese song "Xiao Wei". Mayor Zainul took almost the whole night to finish toasting everyone by stopping at every single table (more than 100). The finale was a group singing by the VIPs of the song "?????", a song which Mayor just sang one night ago at the Eunos Zone 3 RC Chinese New Year function.

Chinese New Year Dinners
2008-02-17 18:29:00
17 February 2008Today the Istana was open to all Grassroots leaders for a Chinese New Year Garden Party in conjunction with Chinese New Year (of course). Faizah's Father gave us a ride to the Istana, since we both live in the same block.Traffic police lined the road leading to the Istana. We were fortunate to be allowed to drop off there since it's double-zigzagged yellow lined road. We came early as we had a RC dinner later in the evening. However, we were not allowed entry since our MPs wouldn't be here yet. Anyhow, we went to Plaza Singapura for a cup of Mocha Frappucino at Starbucks. We chatted for a while with most part talking about her life teaching in Bedok North Secondary School. When time came, we queued up at Istana for security clearance and then boarded the shuttle bus.A symphonic Chinese Orchestra was performing for the crowd. Chinese Calligraphic Society members were writing for free. Other cultural groups were offering their services as well. Food was laid buffet s...

Forum Theatre Presentation on Singapore Politics Tutorial
2008-02-13 03:12:00
Chinese New Year indeed contributed to the inertia of getting back into school work. Hence only on the eve of the tutorial presentation itself did the three of us met online for discussion. The topic was"The highly regulated political system largely explains why the PAP has been winning General Elections easily all these years". Do you agree? We then confirmed that we would be presenting in the setting of a kopitiam chit-chat session among three friends, one being pro-PAP government; one pro-Opposition; and one neutral party. Later, I would learn that it is a forum theatre form of presentation whereby the audience becomes part of the show and they can contribute at any part of the presentation. Sadly, this form of expression is restricted by the Ministry of Information and the Arts in cultural performances.Although at some parts, the presentation did not go smoothly, but on the whole it "set a high bar for the other presenters" as commented by the tutor.

A Lucky start to an Auspicious New Year
2008-02-11 17:07:00
Day 3 of Chinese New Year Went to pray at ??? (tuo ta yuan), a temple situated at Geylang. While waiting for my turn to pray to ??? for blessings, some droplets of red ink sprinkled upon me. 2 drops, each landed on my elbow, with an additional drop on my offerings. Apparently the priest, while stoking the brush in my direction, caused it to happen. The strange thing is no one got it, and when it was my turn to go to the front to listen to the chanting, no red ink either. Could this be good luck (Red = luck)? The fortune cookie that I ate at the temple revealed a message predicting good fortune in investing in blue-chip stocks this year. Cool!My Family later went to Loyang Tua Bek Gong Temple where upon entering, the staff handed to us free copies of newspapers, featuring but of course the sensationalised scandal of Edison Chen. After the prayers, visited Gordan house. Since everyone was playing BlackJack, I caved in to please them. Beginner's Luck is awesome. At my peak, my ROI was 1...

Chinese New Year Eve 2008
2008-02-06 18:13:00
Heralding towards a new year on the lunar calendar...Early morning climbed out of bed and instantly felt the atmosphere refreshing. After reading some course materials, I left for school. The usual crowds and buzz were not in NUS today. Had a very easy time (as well as good spot) to park the vehicle.A lecture must be worth attending to warrant my travelling from the East to the West on a Chinese New Year 's Eve. And indeed it is. Prof Hussin Mutalib never failed to entertain the students with his 1)unique poshy accent; 2)self-glorifying professions; 3)lame rhetorics. For someone who had taught the subject for more than 2 decades, he must have some substance. Singapore politics, while it already is intriguing, has become even more exciting and interesting.I was glad to receive an invitation card to the Istana for Chinese New Year Dinner. The card was personally signed by PM Lee Hsien Loong, SM Goh Chok Tong, MM Lee Kuan Yew and other Cabinet Ministers. Wonderful.Had a little gatherin...

The Wan Soon Lee Business
2008-02-04 09:50:00
Having read a couple of books on the Singapore politics, it excited me when I knew that my Uncle was once with the Workers' Party. I admire the spirit of WP ex-Secretary General Joshua Benjamin Jeyaratnam, with his immense belief that nothing can quash the "indomitable spirit".My Uncle had been to most of his political rallies and had also helped out in the Anson by-election which saw JBJ into Parliament. My Uncle had also spoken to JBJ in person. Wow, how cool! One of the significant moments in Singapore politics. It must have been great memory. It was also my first time today that I set foot in my 4th Uncle's industrial building. One generation plants the trees, in their shade another generation rests
2008-01-08 18:35:00
On the way to the ward, I saw an interesting quote. Apparently there were 2 people who planted some bamboo at the old Toa Payoh hospital. These bamboo trees were then transplanted into the Changi General Hospital and a quote was put up.It read, " We should each plant a tree in our lifetime even if we may not have a chance to sit under it. One generation plants the trees, in their shade another generation rests. ????, ????".It was not difficult to locate the bed in the ward. Grandma's moaning attracted our attention. In most of the beds, the aged patients were accompanied by maids. Ours too. It must be tough to for these underpaid maids to stay by the patients round the clock to attend to them, especially so for my maid, Wati. She had been with Grandma for 2 years. Ironically, she spent more time with Grandma than most of Grandma's descendants. Now, Grandma only responds to Wati and my Aunt. Wati had very much wanted to return to her Indonesia hometown, but lamented that she could...
