Home Foreclosures Hit Record High
2007-12-19 22:00:00
Well, this doesn't help matters. Home foreclosures shot up to an all-time high in the third quarter, fresh evidence of the problems afflicting distressed homeowners amid the housing meltdown. The Mortgage Bankers Association in its quarterly snapshot of the mortgage market released Thursday said that the percentage of all mortgages nationwide that started the foreclosure process jumped to a record high of 0.78% during the July-to-September period. That surpassed the previous high of 0.65% set in the prior quarter. The delinquency rate f

Oceanfreight Shares Tank, CEO & CFO Quit
2007-12-19 22:00:00
Shares of Oceanfreight (OCNF) tanked yesterday after the CEO and CFO mysteriously quite. The stock tanked to below IPO pricing levels on record volume. The two company officials quit without giving any reasons to investors. The company was also downgraded immediately after by Ferris Baker Watts to neutral until the company addresses the issue. Whatever the reason may be, it is almost never positive when two high ranking company officials silently quit their job. I suspect something much worse than anyone thinks could be happening in the near f

December Monthly Review
2007-12-19 18:24:00
Another victorious month snatched from the jaws of defeat! The bizarre rally leading up to the Fed meeting was quickly negated, and we had another month with no losing trades - and more importantly, another month in which we handily beat our 10% target return. We're really pleased with our performance this quarter, especially given the market turmoil. Hopefully these results will help disprove the naysayers out there who (erroneously) claim that market-neutral trading is only suitable for quiet markets.

CPI, Stocks, and You
2007-12-19 17:06:00
Today's CPI, in my opinion, puts the Fed between a really big rock and a hard place. On one hand, you have the CPI potentially showing increasing inflation rates while on the other hand the U.S. may be showing signs of a slowdown.

I want to discuss Identity Theft . I know, it won't happen to you. We all tend to think that way. BUT it can and COULD happen even to you. Making A List, Checking It Twice
2007-12-19 17:05:00
With the Fed's decision to only cut interest rates by 0.25%, we should all be reminded that it is certainly not wise to buy all at once. No matter how great your stock is, there are other factors out there in the market that could affect your stocks performance, even if the company is raking in the money. What you need to realize is the difference between a stock that has been taken down along with the market, and one that truly does deserve to go down based on it's future earnings and fundamentals.

Greenspan Warns of Stagflation, Fed Auction
2007-12-18 16:14:00
"The recent PPI data that showed a 3.2% (highest in 35 years) monthly increase in wholesale prices, and a 0.8% rise in the CPI, brings about a conundrum reminiscent of the so called double dip recession we saw in the early 1980s. Eerie similarities from that time period are popping up every day: record oil prices, a weak consumer, and a limping housing market, all lead to a higher likelihood of recession in 2008 than most economists are letting on - note the terrible accuracy of recession predictions in the past. The collective environme

Eisai To Buy MGI
2007-12-18 00:17:00
Eisai's ambitious "Dramatic Leap Plan," trying to grow its presence worldwide, particularly in the oncology field, has brought them to MGI Pharma. MGI makes drugs like Aloxi, which is used to prevent chemotherapy-induced nausea, and Hexalen, which is used to treat ovarian cancer. Morningstar analyst Brian Laegeler said Eisai is paying a hefty price. "The desperation of big pharma rivals looking to replenish their weak pipelines partially explains the outstanding price paid. The weak dollar probably played a role as well, allowing thi

2007-12-17 16:27:00
I am not sure how many people that are reading this, also read the Wall Street Journal (Print Edition)? Well,I am not one of them, at least not since college. Section C in the WSJ is sheets of stock quotes, all of which are available online in real time. So, why read them? Well, as Matthew Hougan of IndexUniverse.com points out, it is a "treasure trove of interesting data." While it may not be the most up-to-date information, it is a great place to get your finger on the pulse of the economy. Matthew has come up with 10 interesting things

UBS Writes Down $10B in Subprime Losses
2007-12-17 16:27:00
There is another casualty today in the U.S. mortgage meltdown. UBS is recording its first operating loss in more than 9 years. They have decided to write off a further $10 billion on losses in the U.S. subprime lending market and will raise capital by selling substantial stakes to Singapore and an unnamed investor in the Middle East. UBS said that the government of Singapore Investment Corp., or GIC, is investing 11 billion francs ($9.75 billion), while an undisclosed strategic investor in the Middle East is contributing the other 2 billion

December 4th Merger Arbitrage Activity
2007-12-17 07:39:00
The article didn't really tell you what to do with the information, but I thought it was worth sharing. Fiserv (FISV) completed its acquisition of Checkfree (CKFR) for $48 per share in cash, or a total of $4.4 billion. Sirius Satellite Radio (SIRI) announced that it believes that its merger with XM Satellite Radio (XMSR) will be completed before the end of 2007. Sirius CFO David Frear stated that the Department of Justice has "little left to do" to complete its review of the merger. The deal still needs approval from the FCC as well b

Electronic Arts, A Takeover Target?
2007-12-17 07:38:00
Bruce Everiss, a veteran games industry marketer, believes that a takeover of Electronic Arts is inevitable. The only way he sees them remaining independent is to rapidly become a lot bigger. To merge with, say Ubisoft and/or Konami to make a global gaming giant. If the regulators would allow this. The video games business is currently going through an "unprecedented phase of consolidation." This phase is characterized by big global media companies investing very heavily to rapidly increase their presence, mainly by the acquisition of ind

Mining shares diverge from bullion prices
2007-12-12 19:22:00
The drop in mining shares has been due to Teck Cominco and Nova Gold's problems with their Galore Creek project in British Columbia, whose original cost estimate of $2.2 billion quickly spiraled to $5 billion. Something smells wrong here because costs do not just double overnight. Chances are the feasibility study was completed using overly optimistic assumptions. The rising Canadian dollar and difficulties obtaining manpower, equipment, and longer construction times are the reasons cited for the increase.

Is Fannie Mae Beyond Economical Repair?
2007-12-11 23:16:00
After poring over Fannie Mae 's financials, and many articles, I came to the realization that the metaphoric wooden stake would not be found. If any conclusion could be had, it would be that it was time to drape the windows and doors with garlic, or better yet, gold. If Fannie Mae's latest financials are any indication, the company could well be, beyond economical repair.

Tapping The Earth With Ormat
2007-12-11 18:59:00
Just like the red hot solar stocks, Ormat is a play on the growing demand for alternative energy. What makes them unique is that they use geothermal power and other eco-friendly sources to generate revenue. In case you aren't familiar with the geothermal process, it is basically capturing the heat given off from the earth and turning it into electricity. The great part about this process is that it emits little or no emissions...
