Mining shares diverge from bullion prices
2007-12-12 19:22:00
The drop in mining shares has been due to Teck Cominco and Nova Gold's problems with their Galore Creek project in British Columbia, whose original cost estimate of $2.2 billion quickly spiraled to $5 billion. Something smells wrong here because costs do not just double overnight. Chances are the feasibility study was completed using overly optimistic assumptions. The rising Canadian dollar and difficulties obtaining manpower, equipment, and longer construction times are the reasons cited for the increase.

Is Fannie Mae Beyond Economical Repair?
2007-12-11 23:16:00
After poring over Fannie Mae 's financials, and many articles, I came to the realization that the metaphoric wooden stake would not be found. If any conclusion could be had, it would be that it was time to drape the windows and doors with garlic, or better yet, gold. If Fannie Mae's latest financials are any indication, the company could well be, beyond economical repair.

Tapping The Earth With Ormat
2007-12-11 18:59:00
Just like the red hot solar stocks, Ormat is a play on the growing demand for alternative energy. What makes them unique is that they use geothermal power and other eco-friendly sources to generate revenue. In case you aren't familiar with the geothermal process, it is basically capturing the heat given off from the earth and turning it into electricity. The great part about this process is that it emits little or no emissions...

Financial Market Education

Enhancing My Financial Market Education so that a few strategies could be finetuned and I can now take my trading to a new level with my share trading. Have home builders bottomed? That's the million dollar question and a question that has popped up frequently recently following a two week 20 - 30% surge in shares of home builders. I'll tip toe half way out the limb and say yes and no. When I'm looking for a bottom in anything, whether it be an entire sector or individual stock I'm looking at several key criteria:

Shares of MasterCard rose more than 20% late Wednesday after the credit card giant said third-quarter net income jumped 63% due in part to an asset sale and higher consumer spending. MasterCard's quarterly profit rose to $314.5 million, or $2.31 a share, from $193 million, or $1.42 a share in the year-ago period. "Starting in the U.S., our volume growth has far exceeded retail sales growth to date in 2007. Community Health Sells 9 Hospitals
2007-12-11 07:49:00
In an effort to become more efficient, Community Heal th Systems agreed to sell nine of its smaller hospitals to Capella Healthcare for $315 million. "Most of the hospitals were smaller facilities located in smaller rural markets," said Robert Hawkins of Stifel Nicolaus & Co. "These facilities, which made up the original base of Community Health, typically have lower margins, have been difficult to build larger medical staffs and have limited upside potential." Capella, which is privately held, has a different strategy and these small

FDA Panel Rejects Genentechs Avastin
2007-12-11 07:49:00
By JENNIFER CORBETT DOOREN December 5, 2007 2:46 p.m. WASHINGTON -- A U.S. Food and Drug Administration panel narrowly rejected a Genentech Inc. drug Wednesday as a proposed treatment for advanced breast cancer. The panel, on a 5 to 4 vote, said the data provided by the company wasn't sufficient to provide a favorable risk benefit analysis for Avastin. The FDA typically follows its panel's advice but is not required to do so. Avastin is currently approved as a part of a treatment regimen for colon and non-small-cell lung cancer. Th

Bush Is Not Aiding Homeowners

Well, the government stepped into the "mortgage crisis" and is offering relief to the homeowners that can't afford to keep their house if the interest rates go up.rnrn"There is no perfect solution," President Bush said. 5 Red Flags at Lululemon
2007-12-10 16:49:00
Herb Greenberg of MarketWatch isn't a huge fan of Lululemon. He has written many articles about the company and this is just the latest. Red Flag No. 1: Early insider sales. Red Flag No. 2: Share count. Red Flag No. 3: Valuation. Red flag No. 4: Competition. Red Flag No. 5: Management integrity. The one that troubles me is number 5. Chief Executive Bob Meers may have exaggerated a bit about his job history in SEC filings and on the company's website. According to his official Lululemon resume, he was employed by Reebok Internatio
Economic News Boosts Stocks
2007-12-10 16:49:00
The Labor Department this morning reported that productivity rose at a revised 6.3% annual rate last quarter, above a previously reported rise of 4.9% and higher than the 2.2% increase in the second quarter. Unit labor costs, which help show wage-inflation pressure, fell 2%. Wall Street is cheering the report, which suggests that inflation concerns are not as grave as previously believed, allowing the Federal Reserve more room to cut the federal-funds rate without worrying about rising inflation. RJ Reynolds uses Cartoons to Advertise Camel, Getting Sued
2007-12-10 16:49:00
Pennsylvania, New York and Washington state are filing lawsuits Tuesday after R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. violated the tobacco industry's nine-year-old promise not to use cartoons to sell cigarettes. They had a 9 page spread in the Rolling Stones, that was filled with cartoons, and the prosecutors had a heyday. Attorney General Tom Corbett's office said the states are seeking fines of $100 per magazine distributed within their borders, as well as $100 per hit on the related R.J. Dell to Sell Computers at Best Buy
2007-12-09 06:17:00
In another move from their core philosophy of making computers the way you want it and reducing overhead and expenses by not putting their computers in retail stores, Dell has decided to start selling notebook and desktop computers Best Buy in a few weeks. Many people were shocked when they decided to start selling at Wal-Mart last year. Beginning in January, Best Buy said it will sell Dell's XPS and Inspiron laptops and desktop computers in more than 900 stores. I see there being a big issue, as it seems to be a macho thing going o

The US market shifts to a Fed easing watch
2007-12-09 06:17:00
The stock market has shifted its focus to the Federal Reserve's meeting next week and is beginning to price in the chance of a 50 basis point cut rather than the expected 25 basis point cut. I have yet to see the data that warrants a 50 basis point cut but if they do gold is off to the races. All of the talk in the market has been focused on widening credit spreads which have been heading back to the crisis levels of this past summer.

Paulson confident on mortgage crisis
2007-12-09 06:17:00
The stock market quickly pared losses this morning as Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said the plan to freeze some interest rates is part of a "pragmatic response" to reality as the economy faces the worst housing pullback in more than 20 years. His confidence that an agreement will soon emerge to help thousands of homeowners avoid mortgage defaults by temporarily holding their interest rates steady stemmed the losses this morning, though I don't know how long it will hold without more positive news. One bit of news that many inves

Nintendos Wii a surprise hit with seniors
2007-12-07 16:58:00
This is an untapped market that no other video-game-system makers have tried to reach. Sedgebrook retirement community residents tested many of the season's hottest toys to determine which toys their grandchildren might like. "The assumption was that they'd give their grandchildren the toys they approved. But it didn't quite turn out that way. The Nintendo Wii was so popular that the residents clamored for their own. Today, each of the Erickson chain's retirement communities, including Sedgebrook, outside Chicago, owns at least one
