Lululemon Tanks Despite Forecast
2007-12-03 18:48:00
What a crazy day today for Lululemon Athletica. The stock has dropped more than 11% today. Why? This comes after they just raised guidance and announced that their third-quarter profit more than tripled. They reported a third-quarter profit of $7.6 million, compared with $1.7 million in the prior-year quarter!!! Analysts even upgraded the stock and their price targets. RBC Capital Markets analyst Howard Tubin raised his 2007 earnings estimate to 44 cents per share from 40 cents per share, and his price target to $47 from $41. "We conti

Investing guru, Eddie Lampert fires back.
2007-12-03 18:48:00
Yesterday, Sears Holdings announced our results for the third quarter of 2007. While we were not pleased with these results, much of the commentary in the media and on Wall Street following the results ignores the strength of our company and the progress that we have made. In fact, over the past several years, we are one of the few retail companies that have actually reduced our overall debt levels, while at the same time investing over $1 billion on capital expenditures, making investments in inventory for our customers, contributing signific

I Like Short Selling Struggling Retailers
2007-12-03 17:16:00
Why I really enjoy short selling struggling retailers, one of which is Ashworth (Nasdaq: ASHW), an apparel maker. This company has decreasing revenues and margins and increasing losses and debt. Not a good combo going into tax loss selling season and an economy that looks to roll over.

SIV Problem looming behind Citigroup-ADIA deal
2007-12-03 17:10:00
For ADIA, the $7.5 billion deal represents a value investment. For Citi and other banks affected by the housing crisis, it is a temporary respite from the bad news. What remains hidden from public view is the off-the-books $83 billion liability from SIVs that Citi may have to deal with soon..

Staples Barely Beats Estimates
2007-12-03 16:57:00
It is astounding, Staples ' third-quarter profit declined 5.3% on a litigation charge and a weak retail environment in North America and the company still anticipates flat to slightly negative same-store sales in North American retail, yet the stock soared 11%, to $22. Why? Because they beat analysts estimates by $0.02.Excluding a $24 million charge from the settlement of a class-action lawsuit, earnings per share rose 17% to 42 cents. Analysts, on average, expected earnings of 40 cents a share on this basis, according to Thomson Financial.

ARM Resets to Hit the Fan in 2008
2007-12-02 22:48:00
I hate to say it, but I have been talking about this for almost a year now. According to the Wall Street Journal, in 2008 $362 billion worth of adjustable-rate subprime mortgages [ARMs] will be reset, "a scenario that could significantly worsen the already serious subprime crisis", according to a report in Saturday's Wall Street Journal. The "real crest of the reset wave" has yet to take place, which "promises more pain for borrowers, lenders and Wall Street." "The initial wave was largely driven by a higher frequency of fraudulent

Citi Secures $7.5B in Capital
2007-12-02 05:10:00
Wall Street rebounded modestly Tuesday after the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority said it will invest $7.5 billion in Citi group Inc. -- a vote of confidence for the nation's largest bank, which has suffered severe losses amid the ongoing crisis in the mortgage market. Major financial institutions, including Citi and its competitors, have had to book some $80 billion of writedowns on those holdings -- a trend that has left the markets nervous about the full extent of the damage. Investors were relieved that Citi was able to secure an injec

Steeling Ideas from Steel Inventories
2007-11-30 17:07:00
The U.S. manufacturing industries seem to be bracing for a significant slowdown or recession by the looks of their steel inventories: "End-users have no excess inventories and service center inventories were cut to only 2.6 months supply at the start of November." ~Purchasing.com, Analysts see sheet steel prices inflating 13% in 2008 11/20/07 However, if whatever the Fed does between now and February does stabilize the economy, keeping it swimming above a recession, the steel stocks might be a good place to run to. Odds Now Favor a 2008 Recession
2007-11-29 22:15:00
Paul Kedrosky summarized a recent article by Larry Summers. He argued in the FT that the odds now favor a 2008 recession in the U.S. Further, he argues that without "stronger policy responses" than have been seen by now, the impact will be felt "for the rest of this decade and beyond". "In such an environment, economic policy needs to be governed by the clear and public recognition that restoring the normal functioning of the financial system and containing any damage its breakdown may do the real economy is the central macro-econo

$100 oil will hit gas and airfare
2007-11-29 01:03:00
Oil is hovering near $100 a barrel and gasoline prices could soon top their all-time record from last May of $3.22 a gallon. "There's no doubt, gasoline prices are rocketing higher," said Stephen Schork, publisher of the industry newsletter the Schork Report. "By Christmas, we could be paying more for gas than we were during the start of the summer driving season." At the same time, supplies of gas could get tight as many U.S. refiners are undergoing maintenance, according to Schork. "You're that much closer to $4" a gallon ga

The Best Time to Trade Iron Condors, Part 1
2007-11-28 17:47:00
It's pretty common for people to approach us with questions about the right time to trade iron condors, and one of the most common assumptions they make is that it's better to trade condors in low volatility, non-trending environments. This is an understandable assumption, but it's totally false. The best time to trade condors is in high volatility environments, regardless of the trend. So there are actually two points to be made here...

Rate Cut Isnt a Sure Thing
2007-11-28 17:46:00
Though last month's decision by the U.S. Federal Reserve to lower official interest rates was a "close call," officials were worried enough about the chances of a severe housing-induced downturn to act, according to the minutes of that meeting released Tuesday. The minutes dwelled extensively on the economy's vulnerabilities, suggesting that while officials adopted a neutral view of economic and inflation risks last month, they probably see the potential downside from weak growth as the bigger worry. "Many members noted that this po

With all the talk of retailers having to cut prices and lowering their margins, shouldn't we be focusing on the bigger picture here? The mighty Google is the one directing a ton of traffic to all these different sites this holiday season. Not only that, but a smarter consumer that is looking for bargains is going to be more inclined to click on an ad or two while looking for the perfect price on a product. The more people that search for all these high tech gadgets and anything else they are looking for on the net the better... More traffi

Looking for cheap Indian stocks
2007-11-27 19:08:00
With the growth in China, India is being overlooked. Three companies that do outsourcing for IT are hitting their 52 lows, Infosys (INFY), Witpro (WIT), and Satyam Computer Services Ltd (SAY). A possible cut back in IT spending by corporations with the slowdown of the US Economy and with Indian rupee gaining 12% against the greenback in the year, nearly hitting a 10-year high and wage increases in India...that doesn't bold well for offshore firms that have mounted a competitive threat in recent years with low-cost, high-quality software se
