Treasury Scraps SIV Super Fund
2007-12-27 17:11:00
The Treasury scrapped a plan for M-LEC, a proposed $100 billion super fund to bail out Structured Investment Vehicles floundering with subprime lending write-offs. The move to cancel the fund was in part a reaction to Citi's decision to bring it's seven SIV's into the books...

Four Trends for 2008
2007-12-27 17:09:00
Mark Hines, a manager at Northern Trust Investments, is looking forward into 2008 and see's four trends as both risk factors and opportunities for 2008: 1) The Return of the Day Trader: The volatility we've been seeing in the second half of 2007 is unlike any since the technology bubble. For example, the VIX has actually peeked its head above 30 several times in 2007. The short term traders love the volatility as it returns to levels where they can make a living trading in and out of positions on a daily basis. 2) Market Segment Mean

Consumer Spending Surges in November
2007-12-27 17:09:00
Consumers put aside worries about slumping home sales and soaring gasoline prices and headed to the malls in November , pushing spending up by the largest amount in 3 1/2 years. The Commerce Department reported Friday that consumer spending surged by 1.1 percent last month, nearly triple the October gain. The gain reflected various promotional efforts by retailers such as heavy discounting and longer store hours at the start of the holiday shopping season. Consumer spending is closely watched because it accounts for two-thirds of total ec

Three Beaten-Down Stocks at Year-End Bargains
2007-12-26 16:12:00
Jerry Helzner points to investors that have done very well for themselves by buying beaten-down stocks just as the year comes to an end and tax selling ceases to be a factor. This year should be no exception. I agree with Jerry that buying "beaten downs" at year-end comes down to a single major decision, Is the stock way down because of a temporary problem or perception, or is the long-term future of the company in question. If it is the former, you can be a big winner. Here are three stocks that Jerry thinks will do well in the comin

Goldman Blows Analyst Away
2007-12-26 16:12:00
Not everyone in the financial sector has been taking a beating. This morning, Goldman Sachs easily beat Wall Streets expectations of a profit of $6.87 per share on revenue of $10.16 billion when they announced that profits after paying preferred dividends rose to $3.17 billion, or $7.01 per share and revenue of $10.74 billion. They were able to easily beat expectations because they have successfully sidestepped the mortgage losses that hit everyone else. "Inherent in our commitment to our clients is the need to help them execute their

US Market Internals Looking Weak
2007-12-25 22:36:00
The US markets are looking weak. I expected a rally yesterday after Tuesday's big selloff but the rally fizzled as the day went on. The Santa Claus rally might be weaker than expected. NASDAQ internals are extremely weak. The New Highs-Lows list on the NASDAQ continues to fall and this does not bode well for the NASDAQ or for the market as a whole.

Fed Endorses New Home Mortgage Plan
2007-12-25 22:36:00
The Federal Reserve endorsed new rules Tuesday that would give people taking out home mortgages new protections against shady lending practices. The proposed rules, approved in a 5-0 vote by the board, are geared to providing safeguards to the riskiest "subprime" borrowers, already painfully stung by the housing and credit debacles. The proposal is expected to apply to new loans made by all types of lenders, including banks and brokers. The plan could be finalized next year. The Fed, which has regulatory powers over the nation's banki

Stock Investing vs. Gambling
2007-12-24 08:37:00
"The man who begins to speculate in stocks with the intention of making a fortune usually goes broke, whereas the man who trades with a view of getting good interest on his money sometimes gets rich." ~ Charles Dow, 1901 Phil of PhilStock World.com brings up a very important topic. Many people liken investing in the stock market to that of gambling. While you can gamble in the stock market, it does not mean that investing is always a Gamble. "When you allow the whims of the market moment to dictate your 'investing' decisions, then y

Ryan Freund, a Value Investing Blogger, has shared with us some of the key attributes that Benjamin Graham , and Warren Buffett, uses when narrowing down their universe of stocks. I have provided the 6 attributes by Graham, but check out Freund Investing to see their changes to his methodology based on the current market. 1. Crocs - New Majority Shareholder
2007-12-21 21:15:00
Zach of ZachStocks.com has a bright outlook on Croc s due to their Global Expansion, New Product Line, and new contracts. International sales outpaced domestic sales to the tune of 51%. Specifically, strength was seen in Europe and Japan as the release cited $58.1m in sales from Europe and 53.9m from Asia (of which Japan is the majority). Brazil and China are expected to be the upcoming highlights as expansion into these countries has just begun. With all the expansion overseas, Crocs is benefiting from the relative weakness in the dolla

Is this the end of the stock market party?
2007-12-21 19:04:00
I recently stumbled upon Prieur du Plessis's Investment Postcards from Cape Town and I am glad I did. In his most recent post, he wrote on what appears to be the end of the bull market and a very visible sight to the coming recession. "Not since buying my first stocks in 1968 have I experienced the stock market outlook to be as murky as we are experiencing today, Prieur said." He points to a number of observations from a long-term graph of the S&P 500 Index: ? The MACD indicator (bottom section of graph) has just given a sell si

NetSuite Going Dutch
2007-12-21 16:27:00
The on-demand business-management software maker has elected to use a "Dutch auction" process to price its IPO. Investors bid by submitting the number of shares they would like to buy and the price they are willing to pay. The goal of an auction is to set the IPO price closer to the shares' actual market value than the typical IPO process, which usually prices the offering at a discount -- with the hope of a pop during the first day of trading. "The formula has the potential to price the stock at a higher premium to virtually take mo

E-Trade Offers Commission Free Trades this Wednesday
2007-12-21 16:27:00
E-Trade Financial (Ticker Symbol: ETFC) is showing their appreciation to their loyal customers by offering one full day of commission free trading on Wednesday Dec 19, 2007. This is coming after E-Trade's stock price recently plummeted on lending troubles followed by rumors of takeovers or bankruptcy. But is this really of any value when the stock market is looking bearish (who wants to be buying right now?!) and most investors don't participate in short selling? I don't think so.

Uncertainty Surrounding French Equities
2007-12-21 16:25:00
France is undergoing some significant economic changes which have sparked riots recently. Typically, stock markets will rise when an economy undertakes positive changes and prices in the benefits. However, there is a fear of inflation sweeping across Europe and the ECB is not looking at the world through the same glasses as London and New York financial professionals. France does not have total freedom with regard to their

3 China Breakouts Under the Radar

There were four big China breakouts over the past few weeks, none of which in companies most are familiar with. These four could potentially be the next big winners coming out of China so are worth keeping an eye on. All 4 are money makers with very good looking charts, including Solarfun Power (SOLF) which I won't highlight in detail because it's way too extended from a proper entry point ....

Short Volatility: The New Asset Class?
2007-12-20 22:08:00
The gist of the article is that when you're making asset allocation choices, it isn't enough to look just at the usual suspects of bonds, US equities, global equities, commodities, etc. Volatility itself, say the authors of a research paper just out from Goldman Sachs, should be treated as an asset class deserving of its own allocation...

The Downward Sub-Prime Spiral
2007-12-20 16:30:00
The Mortgage industry generates liquidity for the housing market by originating loans, pooling them into securities and selling them to investors to recoup their original lent cash. Mortgage backed securities are rated based on historical default rates (which do not include sub-prime default rates as sub-prime loans are a relatively new invention).
