The Art of Not Doing
2008-03-27 21:42:00
It’s true what they say: If you want something done, ask a busy person. Two years ago I was that busy person, and I got so much done. Now I’m working part-time, and I can barely get out of the bed these days. Time, like money, is a luxury, and like money it can be squandered unwisely. I’ve haven’t been to work for the past nine days, and my only real achievements during that time are watching Heroes Season 2 and a few eps of Weeds Season 2. I can’t be totally surprised as I didn’t have a plan. Without a plan it’s easy to succumb to the temptation of daytime television, random websites and calls from sailors instead of concentrating on moving forward with my life. My birthday has become a time when I think about my life direction. Since my 25th birthday I’ve been stressing about my 30th. There’s still a part of me that feels that my life should be sorted by then, that I should have a flat and a creative career, regular holidays a...
The Sax Man
2008-03-25 19:21:00
Due to my recent money troubles I reluctantly decided to sell some of my gear, including my saxophone. I put an ad in Loot, plus another one in the Sound on Sound readers’ ads. One dark evening, on my way home from work, I received a call from a guy who was interested in my sax. He said that he’d been playing the saxophone for many years, and was working on a merchant ship. He said that he wouldn’t be able to buy the sax straight away, but he’d call me in a few weeks to see if it was still available. He sounded like a nice bloke, but after the other potential buyer turned out to be a timewaster I lost hope in selling the sax. A couple of weeks ago I had another call from the Sax Man, who was checking whether the sax was still available. I confirmed that it was, and he said that he’d have some money for it at the end of this month. I told him that I hadn’t advertised it since the last time, so I was quite confident that it would still be up for gr...

Another day at the office
2008-03-10 14:49:00
I couldn’t sleep last night, due in part to the awful storm which invaded our shores in the early hours. I’m sure that my tiredness has contributed towards my grumpiness, but the fact still remains that my job sucks right now. I’m really starting to feel trapped here. Vid: Working in a Coal Mine by Lee Dorsey Yesterday my mum commented on my work situation, and I confirmed that I thinking over the options available to me right now. I said that I didn’t want to work in an office anymore, and she laughed at me as if that was my only career option. Then she said, ‘Why don’t you become a nurse?’ Yet another indication of how little my mother really gets me. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being a nurse, but I don’t see myself in that kind of caretaking role. My grandma was a nurse before she retired, and she has told me many times how hard it was for her. The truth is that I’m not a selfless person in that way. Plus I&...

The past couple of weeks have been pretty good. Work is still sucking, but there’s more to life than the 21 hours I spend there. To cut a long story short, I’ve won an electric guitar! I won it in an online contest run by a graphic design blogger, where there were several ways of entering, and somehow the fates chose me as the first prize winner. If you’re interested in the details the entire prize is a Squier Strat Electric Guitar by Fender (California Series), Instructional DVD, Electric Tuner, Guitar Strap, Guitar Stand, Gig Bag (Guitar Bag) by Fender, Guitar Cable and Picks. It’ll look something like this: So what am I going to do with my new axe? Well I used to play classical guitar in my teens, so I’ve got some very basic knowledge of chords and scales already. I plan to have some noisy fun with it and play along with my Aerosmith CDs (eventually). Maybe I’ll even start a rock band. My favourite geeky electronic band, Hot Chip, dedicated...

I do not tolerate racism or prejudice of any kind, but I do think that it can be fun to laugh at ourselves. I believe that the differences between races are more cultural than genetic, and I don’t see why we can’t examine our own culture and those of others for similarities and differences. As a second generation immigrant living in the UK, I often feel like someone who doesn’t fit. I’m not Jamaican, but I’m also not like my white friends whose families may have lived here for generations. I am proud of who I am and my heritage, and also glad to be living in one of the most culturally diverse places in the world. Growing up as an ethnic minority can have an effect on one’s self-concept, and I admit that there were times during my childhood when I would wish for the long mane and pale skin of a white girl. I also remember being called a “bounty” or a “coconut” (i.e. black on the outside, white on the inside) for being stud...

Look Deep!
2008-03-01 00:27:00
According to some old traditions, women may propose to their men on 29 February. Some of you may be thinking of taking the initiative and going for that desire to solidify your relationship. If you are, I urge you to really think about it first. Everybody know that most marriages will end in divorce, but that doesn’t stop the hopeful ones from trying to beat the odds, bless them! Recent research suggests that the often-quoted findings about married men being happier than single men, and single women being happier than married women is not entirely sound, but of course your man isn’t like all the rest, is he? Sure he might be gorgeous now, but will you still love him when you’re both eighty? The chances are that you’ll outlive him, which might be the only thing to look forward to if you end up with the wrong bloke. Is the sex good? If it’s not good already, you’re not going to have fireworks on the wedding night. Do you have similar views on rai...

Did you feel it?
2008-02-27 13:46:00
At about 1am this morning an earthquake measuring 5.2. on the Richter scale hit the UK, with its epicentre at 8km east of Market Rasen, Lincolnshire. At that time I was laying on my bed and reading various blogs. I felt my bed shake very slightly, but thought I was imagining it. Then it happened again, and I looked around the room in alarm. It stopped, so I just went back to what I was doing. I just saw the news reports about the quake. I’ve never experienced an earthquake before, and this is one of the last places that you’d expect to feel tremors, though the UK has had the odd tornado from time to time. Freaky, eh? I haven’t been pursuing my photography consistently recently; my distance-learning course ends in the next few days and I feel like I’ve wasted that opportunity, but I should have known better than to enrol on it. I seem to prefer to learn things as and when I need them rather than following a prescribed course of study. Still, I’ve made some progress, mainly due to having my pics hosted on flickr. Two of my photos were chosen for Schmap Guides to London and Paris, and someone whose photos I really admire invited me to join his group called THE EXTRAORDINARY PHOTOGRAPH. Last week I ventured into central London again: Clapham, Battersea, Chelsea, Piccadilly, Charing Cross then Victoria. You’ll see that I also stopped at the Hard Rock Café too. While I was around Leicester Square and Charing Cross Rd I also took some pics for Splotchy’s new blog, which was fun. Here are some of the results. Cloverfield

I saw Cloverfield the other day, and thought that it was B-Movie heaven. The Flash Player and a browser with Javascript support are needed.. Who doesn’t love to see gorgeous people being attacked by evil creepies? Who doesn’t love to watch a guy who puts his life and those of his friends’ in jeopardy to save a hot girl? Who doesn’t love having a queasy stomach while watching an incessantly shaky viewpoint? Who doesn’t love spotting the gaping plot holes, inconsistencies and predictable moments? Who doesn’t love having little context in which to place the events of the movie, and no explanation for the monsters’ origins? The first third of the movie was focussed on introducing us to the main players, in the hopes that we’d feel sympathy for them when the shit hit the fan. So we meet brothers Rob and Jason Hawkins, Rob’s best friend Hud, Jason’s girlfriend Lily (the gorgeous Jessica Lucas), Hud’s crush Marlena and ...

Suicidal Food
2008-02-21 17:30:00
I’ve recently noticed quite a trend in food advertising, which I find quite disturbing; the apparent death-wish of a variety of foodstuffs. I guess I find it disturbing because it promotes the anthropomorphism of animals and plant-derived foods. And besides, if a pig was like us, why would it want to be eaten? And there were the Bunny Suicides: Then there was that Twix ad, about the two choc bars that were happier together, even if together meant that they were in someone’s stomach… And now it’s the turn of the class Cadbury’s Cream Egg to declare its death-wish, this is my favourite one as it’s pretty clever, but there are some other ones below too, watch them if you think you’re ‘ard” Related PostsThe "Destroy Food " Diet WishlistHow much do you eat?krispy kremes are the food of the devil!Food for thoughtA mini junk-food bonfire

Juno
2008-02-20 19:14:00
AKA You’re all going to hate me - Part 1 So I saw Juno last week at the cinema. I enjoyed the movie, but I’m sorry to say that I didn’t think it was Oscar-worthy. If you’ve been living in a cave these past few months you might not know that Juno is the story of a quirky teenage girl (Ellen Page) who becomes pregnant and ultimately decides to give the baby up for adoption. During the movie we meet the baby’s daddy Paulie Bleeker (whose apparent appeal wasn’t clear to me), Juno’s dad and step-mother, her teacher-loving gal pal Leah, plus the upmarket Loring couple who intend to adopt Juno’s baby. Page’s characterisation of this smart-beyond-her-years teen reminded me a great deal of her interpretation of Hayley Stark in Hard Candy. She suited both roles, but it makes me wonder how versatile she is generally, or whether she’s starting to be typecast already. Jennifer Garner played a caricature of a successful but broody wom...
