I Am Legend: The Hero’s Journey

I watched I am Legend at the IMAX recently, and found it really compelling. All the way home my friend and I talked about the plot, and various issues that had intrigued us from the movie. Last year I started to study the precepts of storytelling, mythology and related psychology so I thought that it might be fun to analyse this story from the point of view of one of these perspectives: The Hero ’s Journey . The Hero’s Journey is a mythic storytelling structure which was first identified by Joseph Campbell, then adapted for writers by Christopher Vogler in The Writer’s Journey. This device identifies a basic structure which has been used in stories from ancient times to our modern epics like Star Wars. While I was watching I am Legend I could pinpoint some of the turning points featured in the Hero’s Journey, so I thought that instead of a normal review I’d give you a mythological review of the movie. I never was a fan of the Spice Girls in the late 90s or early 00s - as an aspiring musician at the time they represented all that was foul and impure about the pop music industry. Aside from their musical talents, I’ve always been interested in their phenomenon, and their individual solo careers. I’ve read Geri and Mel B’s autobiographies, and watched Victoria and Mel B struggle as solo artists. [Show as slideshow] Thinking about it with some hindsight, I can now admit that Geri Halliwell is my favourite Spice Girl. Remember J.D. and the A-bomb? Well that’s nothing compared to my current longing for the next Bond movie. Now the publicity machine has commenced, and we’ve been blessed with a strange title: Quantum of Solace , which was taken from a short story written by Bond author Ian Fleming, and refers to Bond’s broken heart after the demise of his lover Vesper Lynd. Here’s a BBC report about the new film, with a few seconds of Craig hurling himself around heroically on a rope. And my girl Olga Kurylenko is playing a Bond Girl called Camille. Every 10 seconds someone in the world dies of AIDS. (via) The other day Ahmed casually mentioned in conversation that a mutual friend from sixth-form, Jon, is HIV-positive. Jon and I are not in contact nowadays, but I still think of him from time to time. The last time I saw him was in 2003, when his lovely Latino boyfriend had front-row tickets for Mariah Carey’s concert at Wembley (I was in the second row). Jon was my first gay friend, and he was so accepting of my teen bizarreness. He took me to gay clubs when I decided to write a report on the gay community for Sociology, and he opened my eyes to many things that I’d never seen or experienced before (or since). He told me about various orgies he’d enjoyed in gay saunas, etc., but I don’t know how careful he was during those encounters. I can’t sleep. It’s nearly four am. I know that I’ve neglected this blog recently, and it also feels like I’ve been neglecting myself too. I’m really starting to dislike my job; every day it feels harder to drag myself there. I don’t feel like my life is going to improve, like all I’ve got to look forward to is another 40-50 years of tedium. And yet there’s a tiny voice inside of me that believes that I can change my life for the better. I constantly feel underestimated. I also feel that several people are taking advantage of me on a regular basis. It’s got to stop. One of my issues is that I often let people get away with a certain amount before I make a fuss. I hate to create conflict, so I end up leaving it until all that bottled-up resentment erupts from deep inside of me. This morning I was walking through Clapham Junction station between platforms when I heard a man shouting at the guy working behind the counter of a mini newspaper/sweet stall. I didn’t heard the whole conversation, but I did hear: “I’m a London er, I will shoot you, motherf**ker! I will shoot you!” As I continued walking away from the scene he kept on repeating his vow to shoot the shopkeeper. I don’t know what started the argument, but I was shocked at the guy’s vehemence, and at the threat itself. I’m hoping that it was just that - an empty threat made in the heat of the moment. And what’s being a Londoner got to do with shooting people? Only yesterday I found out about the 13 year old girl who was stabbed at her school in South London, which several of my friends attended in the 90s. If you’re any kind of geek, you probably already know about the Apple Keynote Speech, and the announcement of the forthcoming MacBook Air, the thinnest laptop ever. I prefer to call it the MacBook Slim , as that sounds more bad-ass to me. While the J.D. explodes with envy, the rest of us can admire and covet. The Flash Player and a browser with Javascript support are needed.. I won’t bore you with the tech specs here, but as we all know, being slim and sexy comes with a cost. To eliminate those extra inches you might turn down that extra scoop of ice cream or opt for salad instead of a steak dinner; the MacBook Air doesn’t have a internal disk drive or an ethernet port, there’s only one USB 2.0 drive, the memory can’t be upgraded, and the battery can’t be replaced by the user. Vid: Play Dead - Björk Last week wasn’t a great one for me at all. It was fairly miserable actually. On Monday I discovered that I was broke after my Christmas shopping binges, and eventually ended up leeching some dirty cash from my credit card to keep me going until pay-day (this Thursday or Friday). However, (before that brainwave) when I tried to buy a train ticket with my credit card I discovered that the card had expired, and I’d left the new one at home. After borrowing a pound off a mate I went to the station to get my train home, and discovered that I was 15 pence short. Luckily for me, a cute angel who was helping people to use the ticket machines gave me it so I could get home. During that journey home I decided that Everything Must Go. Time to start selling the things I’m not using and don’t need.
