I’ve recently mentioned the money problems which I’ve experienced lately. Even though I made an arduous effort to cut down on my spending I still ended up being penalised again by my bank for going over my overdraft limit. (Though when I looked through my statement, it appears that they overcharged me last month so I’m going to have to sort them out tomorrow, but that’s another story.) I personally prefer not to borrow money from friends or even family if I can help it; if I need extra cash I’d rather borrow it from a financial organisation so that it’s all straightforward and clear. Several years ago, while I was studying, during the period I was seriously interested in music, and also when I moved in with the Ukrainian I ran up a few debts, on a series of credit cards and loans but on the whole I was in control of my debt and paid my bills on time. My friend Miguel called me on Thursday night and told me that he was hanging around a certain area of London, trying to track down the guy that he’s been seeing. A week or more ago they’d talked about meeting up on Valentine’s Day, but Miguel hadn’t heard from him in several days and couldn’t get through to him on the phone, so he decided to track him down and confront him. The problem was that he only had a vague idea about which of several restaurants was his guy’s workplace, and he also didn’t know the precise house where the guy resided, though he knew the road itself. I tried to dissuade him from his path of action, especially as it seemed like such a gamble and could make him seem slightly desperate, but Miguel is a stubborn guy, and there was no talking to him. A First Last Look

The other day, when I went to see I am Legend, I also saw the Dark Knight prologue; a trailer showing the movie’s first scene plus a few snippets of later events. You can see a really horrible recording version of it if you like seeing the head-back of the person in the row in front… It was a very nice taster of the movie, but very surreal to see that brief moment at the end when Heath Ledger unmasks himself and speaks to the gun-toting banker. The robbery itself was genius, with everyone knocking off the other players once their parts had been played. There was only a brief view of Batman himself near the end, looking out pensively over Gotham. I must see this movie, and I must see it at the IMAX. That is all. I watched I am Legend at the IMAX recently, and found it really compelling. All the way home my friend and I talked about the plot, and various issues that had intrigued us from the movie. Last year I started to study the precepts of storytelling, mythology and related psychology so I thought that it might be fun to analyse this story from the point of view of one of these perspectives: The Hero ’s Journey . The Hero’s Journey is a mythic storytelling structure which was first identified by Joseph Campbell, then adapted for writers by Christopher Vogler in The Writer’s Journey. This device identifies a basic structure which has been used in stories from ancient times to our modern epics like Star Wars. While I was watching I am Legend I could pinpoint some of the turning points featured in the Hero’s Journey, so I thought that instead of a normal review I’d give you a mythological review of the movie. I never was a fan of the Spice Girls in the late 90s or early 00s - as an aspiring musician at the time they represented all that was foul and impure about the pop music industry. Aside from their musical talents, I’ve always been interested in their phenomenon, and their individual solo careers. I’ve read Geri and Mel B’s autobiographies, and watched Victoria and Mel B struggle as solo artists. [Show as slideshow] Thinking about it with some hindsight, I can now admit that Geri Halliwell is my favourite Spice Girl. She was the first to leave the group in 1998, and the first to start her solo career (despite her obvious lack of vocal prowess) and secured several UK #1 singles. Even more importantly, she handled the scandal about her pre-Spice topless pics with the nonchalance that it deserved.
