Love London
2008-01-06 04:00:00
Last Wednesday I was bored of hanging around the house and decided to go out. I didn’t have any specific plans, though I wanted to go to the National Portrait Gallery and the OXO Tower if possible. Whilst on the train to Victoria I decided to get off at Clapham Junction and see my brother at work. We caught up for a few moments in between customers, and I bought a cheap camera off him (Sony Cybershot, 6MP for £70 including accessories cos they didn’t have a box for it). Afterwards, I visited the nearby Debenhams department store and bought some clothes. Then I decided to get a bus into central London . I caught a single-decker bus (route 239) which was heading to Victoria. There was just me and a few elderly women on the bus. After a little while I looked out and saw a great view of the Thames at Battersea. I decided to get off the bus at the next stop and take some pics of that view. Pump It Up: Dance Mix (A Review)
2008-01-06 02:05:00
A few weeks ago I wrote about some new workout dvds that were about to be released. Since then I bought one of them, the Ministry of Sound’s Pump It Up Dance Mix. I was confident in the quality of this dvd before my purchase having enjoyed previous Ministry of Sound workouts in the past. I was looking forward to working out to recent dance hits like Let Me Think About It and The Creeps. The workout is presented by choreographer Gareth Walker (who has recently worked with Take That), and three sexy girls. Sure there wasn’t a man with an afro this time around, but I couldn’t help being enthused by Gareth’s effervescent and camp personality. He was also a great instructor, and I found myself following his dance combos fairly easily. I would say that this video isn’t for someone who doesn’t like dancing or is completely new to exercise, as it’s fairly high-impact and fast-moving video. I definitely felt like I was one of the sexy girls dancing...

Take a Chance on Céline
2008-01-05 19:33:00
I picked up Céline Dion’s new album today, and I’m listening to it right now. I’ve got several of her previous albums (English and French), so you could call me a fan. My favourite albums of hers are Falling into You and Let’s Talk About Love. She’s such a versatile singer, and her vocal technique is impeccable. She seems like such a nice person too… I would have loved to see her in Las Vegas, but she’s doing a world tour soon, so I might catch her at some point. So I was quite amused to come across this youtube tribute to her awesomeness. If you ever wanted to see Céline doing the chicken dance or singing “Who let the Dogs out?”, well it’s your lucky day. Addicted to love?
2008-01-04 20:00:00
Hair scraped back? Vacant stare? Tight dress? Braless bosoms? Musical instrument in hand (and no idea of how to play it)? Yes to all of the above? Then we have a hot music video homage to this classic 80’s tune. I prefer the original, but the others are great too. 1986: Addict ed to Love - Robert Palmer (Just read on wiki that this was supposed to be a duet with Chaka Khan, but her record company wouldn’t release her to work on Palmer’s label. She was still credited with the vocal arrangements. This song is awesome anyway, but imagine it with Chaka’s vocals! ) – 1999: Man, I feel like a Woman - Shania Twain – 2003 Christmas is all Around - Bill Nighy (hilarious - shame I didn’t find this a couple of weeks ago, but Christmas season lasts until 6 January, so it’s still okay.) – 2007: Green Light - Beyoncé – There was another video that I wanted to locate (On the Greener Side by Michelle Shocked) but it had been ...

Movies I’ve watched recently
2008-01-03 22:11:00
P2 was the perfect movie to watch on Christmas Day. A woman works late on Christmas Eve and gets trapped in her work car park with a psychotic security guard called Thomas. I don’t watch horror movies very often, but the publicity pics showing a gorgeous blonde running around with an axe sparked my interest. Both of the main characters were very convincing in their roles. Some of the difficulties with movies with a very narrow scope like this is maintaining the interest without the use of sub-plotting, but this film interspersed the intense chases with bizarre moments like Thomas’ Elvis dance (complete with hip thrusts)… Invariably in these kind of films there are always moments when you think, ’she could have escaped just then’, but of course that wouldn’t have given us the glorious finale scene. And it was glorious. And gory. Urban Recluse Rating: 3 out of 5 stars – Life Support is about a HIV-positive woman called Ana (Latifah) who ov...

Supersonic

Nike+ Supersonic London’s fastest 1000 race a floodlit 1K course through Battersea Park cheered to the finish by 2000 of their mates. Live performances from Dizzee Rascal and The Enemy fuel their speed as we discover who’s the fastest of the fast. I’m not too far from Battersea, so I’ll see if I can attend this event. It makes me wish I could run a proper distance; I can run for a bus when necessary, but not over any real distance. I’ve signed up a few times for the Nike 10K race, but couldn’t cope with the training schedule. It’s still a goal of mine, but I think I need to work on getting fitter before I try to train for it again. In school I was one of the fastest girls in my class. And I’m still hard to catch. O, what a goodly outside falsehood hath! William Shakespeare Video: Would I lie to you? by Charles and Eddie Sam the Frog has tagged me to tell you seven things about myself which may (or may not) be true. 1. I used to be a backing singer for Michael Jackson. Man, I loved wearing that sexy leather outfit on the Bad tour. He’d stare at me when he sang Dirty Diana. 2. I always finish books once I’ve started them. A few years ago I started reading the second Harry Potter book, but I couldn’t bear to read on, so I ate it. With chicken noodle soup. Libro finito. 3. When I was an impoverished student a few years ago, I became a sex-line operator. My sex-op name was Shandy. While I chatted filth to the punters I typed my anthropology thesis. 4. When the King of Jordan requires a sensual bellydancer for a private performance, he sends for me. I cannot refuse on pain of execution, no matter what other plans I have made for the week. 5. Dr Monkey fathered my baby, Monty....

The 85 of 2007
2008-01-01 00:17:00
A few weeks ago I noticed that one of my goals for 2007 had been to read 50 books. I’m happy to tell you that I’ve actually read 85 books. The Flash Player and a browser with Javascript support are needed.. Sure, some of them were easy reads, but I needed some filler to clear my head after some of the more intense novels. Goodbye 2007
2007-12-31 22:37:00
It’s been an interesting year for me. I returned to part-time work, and aimed to become more fulfilled generally When I look back on certain years, I sometimes notice that a particular activity had dominated my thoughts: 1997: Spanish language and culture 2000: music performance (singing) 2001: Middle-eastern dance and music 2003: African drumming 2005: writing 2007: blogging So now I wonder what will be my primary focus in 2008. I would like to continue blogging, and to start writing fiction again. I would also like to make music again, just as a hobby. I’ve decided not to make any formal resolutions, as I never keep them for more than a few days. My main goal for the coming months is to lose some of my excess weight. I think that a good initial goal would be to lose 10% of my body fat, then take it from there. I have the tools to lose the weight, I just need to work out an exercise routine and food guidelines that I can live with for the long term. So what about you? ...

Friday Nite Mix: Minogue Magik
2007-12-28 21:30:00
Last night I was inspired to revisit some of my favourite Kylie Minogue songs, and realised how many great songs she’s made over the years. Here’s a selection. Playlist: Confide in Me Can’t Get You Out of My Head Put Yourself in My Place In Your Eyes Kids (feat. Robbie Williams) Come into My World Love at First Sight Spinning Around Red Blooded Woman Better the Devil You Know Chocolate Slow – As a bonus, here are some more excellent Kylie tracks, a couple of sexy ads featuring the pop princess, plus some of my favourite tracks sung by her sister Dannii. Playlist: Agent Provocateur ad (banned in some places) H&M Love Kylie ad 2 Hearts (her current single) Physical (a live cover of Olivia Newton-John’s hit) Where the Wild Roses Grow (with Nick Cage) Breathe All I Wanna Do by Dannii Minogue (I actually saw her perform this song in G.A.Y. at the London Astoria in 1998. Her voice was really strong and clear. Put the Needle On it by Dannii Minog...

Festive Spirit
2007-12-28 20:57:00
Last Sunday I went to visit my grandma who lives in East London. As I left my home that afternoon I discovered the thick mist which had descended over the city and lasted all day. (People from other countries seem to think that London is always foggy, but it’s quite rare really, and mostly happens on the odd winter morning.) Anyway, I felt like I might have entered the Victorian London of the novel that I’m currently reading, The Meaning of Night by Michael Cox. On the train into central London I noticed that some (presumably) young vandal had written “BELIEVE SANTA EXISTS” plus something about BSE (mad cow disease) on a window opposite me. I felt compelled to take a pic of it with my camera-phone. What a lovely sentiment, spreading the joy of Christmas to children everywhere. It’s just a shame that the perpetrator felt the need to damage public property to convey the message… After visiting my grandma and making my journey homewards, I alighte...

Will Smith is NOT a Nazi
2007-12-26 19:46:00
During a recent interview promoting his new film, I am Legend, Will Smith expanded on a comment he had made about his belief that the human mind is inherently good, by saying: Even Hitler didn’t wake up going, ‘let me do the most evil thing I can do today.’ I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was ‘good.’ Anyone with a modicum of common sense would not think that he was condoning Hitler’s actions or beliefs in this statement, but merely attempting to explain how someone could choose to commit diabolically evil acts in the belief that they are doing good work. Perhaps Will could have chosen his words more carefully and/or spoken about dictators in general, but I think his intention and meaning was clear. As a result of that comment, there have been calls to boycott Smith’s films. He responded to those threats with the following statement: It speaks to the dangerous power of an ignorant person...

Getting stuck in the supermarket on Xmas Eve after forgetting something essential - like cheese, or a last-minute present. (Though not this year.) Colluding with my brother to buy our mum a present. Buying myself more than anyone else. Hey, I deserve it. Going mental in the crowds when present-shopping. Note to self: go to Victoria again next year, it’s not as busy as Croydon or Oxford Street but has all the usual shops. Mum’s cake. The best in the world. She makes me my own mini cake, without the raisins. Housework. Random Santa sightings. (Saw two skinny Santas on their way to a footie match on Saturday.) Carol singers in Croydon. Charity workers with Santa hats. Turkey (but I prefer it on Boxing Day, when my mum fries the leftover meat.) We’ll also have brussel sprouts, stuffing, salad, potatoes, and rice & peas. Quality Street chocs. My faves are the coconut one and the one in the purple wrapper with the peanut and caramel filling. Family movies. My Fair ...
