Is there a telltale sign of economic recession to us?
2008-06-05 04:50:00
Yesterday I went across the Johor Bahru borders with my girlfriend and her family. We went in to pump a whole tank of petrol. For toyota Altis, we pump the best petrol V-Power at Shell at only about RM$76 (probably about $38+ in Singapore). In Singapore, for V-Power Shell, it probably cost S$100. I remember past few days, Malaysia had its regulation to restrict Singapore cars from coming in order to protect its oil resources, I suppose. It didn’t work as JB’s economy much depends on influx of Singaporean shoppers over at the other borders. They allow Singapore cars to come in few days after. Just after pumping petrol in the evening, Malaysia announced the news at 10pm to increase petrol price to 40%. What a relief! It reflects a fiscal move by the government to intervene in order to curb the oil price increase in the past few months. Coincidentally US Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke indicated more US interest hikes were unlikely and raised questions about oil’s ability t...

New Generation, New Trends, New Rules in New Age
2008-06-04 02:21:00
I created a new category for my readers who sometimes may look into better ways to manage their time, themselves and the people working with them. This is to enhance themselves as well as myself as a form of reminder. It is purely to add value to my readers. The Edge spoke about new ways of addressing the new ways of working in todays’ world. 10 Rules on the Road according to Hewitt are: 1. Focus on people on long term performance 2. Repeatedly clarify business strategies 3. Set more aggresive yet realistic goals. 4. Pay for right activities, behaviours, outcomes and potential 5. Pay the most to those who contribute most 6. Use incentive plans to strongly reinforce a performance culture 7. Create programmes that are highly regarded by involving more stakeholders. 8. Ensure programmes are owned and operated by business 9. Use technology and online tools effectively 10. Communicate regularly.

Rule of 78 for Car Loans
2008-06-03 02:10:00
The Rule of 78 is a method of allocating a loan’s interest and principal. The Hire Purchase Act requires the use of the Rule of 78 for car loans. For any standard car loan scheme, you are required to pay all the principal and interest that would have accrued over the entire loan period. However, in the event you decide to repay the outstanding loan before the loan period ends, you will receive a rebate on the interest. The interest rebate will be calculated using the method of Rule of 78 less 20 per cent. This is to cover some of the costs that the bank will incur when a loan is repaid early. Under the Rule of 78, you work out the rebate using the following formula: Rebate of interest = [n (n+1)/N (N + 1)] x TI, where n = The number of months remaining on the loan N = The total loan period TI = The total interest charged over the period of the loan This method enables you to calculate how much interest you will get back, and the total amount you need to pay the bank if yo...

Things to do after car accident by GIA
2008-06-02 02:07:00
Following the update I had placed few weeks ago on motor claims, I have placed a Q and A for people who might need this info from claims. The recent source is from Straits Times and GIA. —————&mdash ;—————&mdas h;———— Q: Why is the new framework necessary? It is a best practice undertaken by all motor insurers in Singapore, and provides clear and standard procedures regarding what to do in the event of a motor accident. When involved parties are forced to report their accidents ‘fresh’, the incidence of people lying and collaborating with repair workshops to inflate claims is drastically reduced. This will provide motorists with a better claims experience and help contain insurers’ cost of claims. Q: Will the new framework translate into higher premiums? On the contrary, it will help to contain the cost of claims for insurers. And if claims are managed well, premiums should not rise....

Start early to save when time is on your side
2008-05-30 02:35:00
“You need not be a whiz to save enough to retire; just start early and let your money compound” was the heading on a news article on Sunday Straits Time s article What the article is talking about is the power of compounding and how you can save by starting small disciplined savings every day. For instance, do you know that $68 a month invested for annual returns of 8 per cent over 30 years will generate a sum of $102,020? But if your investment horizon is shorter, say, 10 years, you will need a larger monthly sum of $554 invested at the same rate of 8 per cent to generate $102,020. Consider this: If you start saving at the age of 20, putting away $2,000 a year until you reach 30, and you continue to stay invested without any further input of cash till you turn 63, you will have nearly the same amount of money socked away as a person who also saves $2,000 every year but starts a decade later, between the ages of 30 and 62. To illustrate this, let’s assume Mr A st...

How To Deal Loss of Speech?
2008-05-28 03:47:00
When approached, the speech language-pathologist may try to analyze the problems related to the loss of speech and finally assist in the planning of therapy for rectifying the problem. Speech language consultants are available in most of the countries and when consulted, the assistance will be provided in a systematic manner. If you misuse the vocal cords by continuous singing in a loud manner for a very long time, you may experience the loss of speech. This loss of speech is mostly noticed in children. New measures by MAS to improve the disclosure standards for participating l
2008-05-26 02:29:00
MAS (Monetary Authority of Singapore) will be taking recent measures to close the information gap surrounding what are known as participating life or ‘par’ policies. To recap, premiums paid by policyholders for their ‘par’ plans go into a common pool called the ‘par’ fund and is invested in a variety of assets, with bonuses paid out from surpluses. Most insurers did not disclose the returns or losses of their funds, the target returns and payout levels, or the funds’ investment strategy and allocation mix. With the new measures implemented since March, all this is set to change. They include a revised benefit illustration with two projected rates of returns, which is meant to help policyholders understand that cash bonuses are not guaranteed and will vary depending on several factors. Also, it is now compulsory for insurers to disclose how they invest the premiums collected as well as their past performance. The changes reflect the industry...

Personal Thanks to My Clients

By and by I have come across some valuable clients, and I would like to give grattitude for people like them who made success to myself. Over the past 2 yrs, I had served some of the clients, of which cases are small in size, but plans that are necessity for their well being. I like to give thanks to 2 clients Ruth Lim and Adrian Tan. I proposed to Ruth before an annuity for her future retirement needs. Before that she just had recovered from her leg injury. With her sincerity and belief in me, she had proposed to many of her friends and strangers on medical and savings/protection needs, even though I had not asked for any referrals. Indeed I am grateful for her genuity and sincerity. Another person I like to thank is Adrian who had found me on the net and got some medical and life coverage from me. He had shared info with his bank people. Even though the cases are not big, his action has touched my belief in this industry to serve people like himself better. Lastly not forgetting m...

Updates in Singapore Economic Outlook May 2008
2008-05-24 05:46:00
On its 26th year high, this year’s CPI and Inflation is the highest in Singapore , being projected 7.5%pa last month. The economy of Singapore now faces 3 main factors to affect its future economic outlook: RISING INFLATION SLOWER GROWTH WEAKER EXPORTS The increase in oil barrel to $135 a barrel, and the result of speculators going into commodity stocks as to take advantage of the situation doesn’t help to reduce the inflation further. On the whole MAS has increased the projection of inflation from 4-5% to 5-6% pa next year! Central Bank’s monetary policies may only work to a certain extent to regulate the inflation. For now, investment status looked volatile at the moment. At least a piece of good news would be after 28 yrs of legal discussion with Malaysia, Singapore has got the ownership of Pedra Branca, an island since the British Colony days. This is a good news to celebrate after all.

How To Treat Major Burns Symptoms?
2008-05-23 03:41:00
Treatment of major burns is often associated with therapy from multiple experts. Debridgement therapy may be adapted. Fluids by intravenous route may be given. Long acting antibiotics with broad spectrum of activity may be given. Contamination of the burnt areas needs to be avoided. Operations pertaining to the skin graft may be carried out in case of very bad injuries. Installation of breathing tube is a must if the tracheal passage or lung tissues are severely damaged. First one has to attempt to save the life and not to treat the burns. Treatment with zinc, vitamin A and C will help the speedy recovery. Resuscitation or artificial respiration should be adapted. Occupational therapist and psychologist may be approached as per the need. Tetanus vaccination may be given as preventive step. To prevent severe burning, take all precautions to avoid exposure of body parts to fire. Smoke detectors in house have to be installed to prevent fire. Have shelter inside the house while there is...

8 Steps to beat Inflation
2008-05-22 01:51:00
CPI in Singapore is at its 26th year high. Here are some of the steps to beat inflation (disclaimer that it may not be the best or safest way): 1. Refrain from holding too much cash 2. switch from cash and fixed income based portfolio to balanced one that invests in equities and bonds to generate higher return 3. Consider higher risk and thus higher yielding and inflation-linked fixed income securities given the threat of inflation. 4. Take advantage of currency appreciation of inflation targeting countries (eg Singapore, Russia, Middle East) 5. Dump meagre Singapore dollar fixed deposits for higher yielding foreign currency deposits which may give 10x more interests. 6. invest in certain safer stocks, equities and unit trusts with good fundamental values, 7. Take exposure to to soft commodities during price dips to hedge against food inflation. 8. Consider real estate and alternative investments lastly when all fundamentals including insurance protection and necessities have been ...

2008-05-21 03:39:00
In major burns, the skin is totally damaged. The body cells get destroyed to a greater extent. Shortness in the breathing occurs. There may be an appearance of blue color over the lips and finger nails, in some persons. If not attended immediately, most of the times death may occur in these cases. Understanding Inflation
2008-05-20 01:29:00
Why the rise in inflation? I understand from recent readings and summarise all of them for my clients here. Firstly, a general rise in prices and a change in relative prices. Inflation is a situation in which prices of most goods and services rise pretty much across the boad, whereas a relative price index is when prices of some items mght rise in comparison to prices of all other items esp. easy monetaary conditions. Secondly due to a structural change of some items scarier than others that we consume (eg the recent rice shortage scare). Thirdly there are long term factors and short term immediate caouses for price change (eg oil, rice) for short term hike is caused by speculation, supply shock or policy changes. Traditionally, inflation is understood by monetary and fiscal policies, using what we had always learnt in school economics. Central bank policies come into play in the 70s and 80s. Interest rates and money supply were used to keep growth very high causing uncomfortably hi...

What is Major Burns?
2008-05-19 03:36:00
Major burns means the condition in which the skin and the underlying tissues including organs, muscle, bone and some times nerves may get affected severely. Third degree burns are associated with this category. At least 20 % of the body surface get affected in this condition. The body cells are killed in a severe manner and hence, tissue stabilizing factors get lost in the affected persons. Greater units of body surface area get covered by this. Mostly children get affected. Over three million cases have occurred. About sixty thousand children get affected every year. This condition is worst than the first and second degree burns in terms of both symptoms and pathogenesis. The condition of third degree burns is caused by exposure of persons to severe heat. Mostly it is the fire accident that leads often to the third degree burns. Yeah… Whenever persons get trapped in accidental fire in house or inside a burning vehicle, then they suffer by the burn injuries of severe degree....

I was reading the straits times and would like to summarise for my policyholders the reasons people take to set up TRUST. One way of doing it is by using insurance as a form of trust. Warding off creditors for businessowners (must be more than 5 years before he declares bankrupt) 4. Confidentiality unlike trusts 5. Phlanthrophy for charity 6. Providing for next generation or disabled children. 7. Providing others protection against collectibles or valuables. For more info on the costs, it would be good to enquire from the Trust ee companies.

What is Motor Neuron Disease?
2008-05-12 03:29:00
The definition of motor neuron disease means the diseases that are highly progressive in nature caused by disorders affecting the motor neurons in the body. When the motor neurons are affected in multiple ways, then the voluntary activities associated with these motor neuron diseases get affected. One in five out of one lakh persons get affected and mostly males are affected than females. It has many forms like progressive muscular atrophy, primary lateral sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. In United States of America, this problem is also termed as Lou Gehrig’s disease. How To Perform Major Organ/Bone Marrow Transplantation?
2008-05-09 03:27:00
The treatment for the major organ/bone marrow transplantation has to be directed mainly towards infection and rejection. Immunity based suppressive actions are to be tackled by use of appropriate immunosuppressant. To avoid the total rejections, one has to monitor the major organ functions by carrying out the appropriate organ function tests. Liver biopsy may be undertaken for a confirmatory study. Similarly, for renal function tests, one has to go for estimation of serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen. To prevent the major organ/bone marrow transplantation, persons have to subject themselves to physical examination by medical experts and the systematic examination of blood and stool samples. Further, persons need to undertake exercise on daily basis and nutritive foods have to be consumed with adequate fiber content and vitamins especially the vitamin E and C. These help to prevent the need of transplantation. Avoidance of consumption of large amounts of liquor or indulging in...

Understanding what is a probate in will writing?
2008-05-09 02:41:00
Where do you see this? In court documents and newspaper articles. What does it mean? When there is a will, the deceased’s estate or assets can be accessed by the family and descendants and distributed among them only after a grant of probate has been obtained from the courts. The estate or assets are frozen under estate administration laws in the meantime. The objective is to make sure that an estate is distributed according to the wishes of the deceased. If there is no will, letters of administration will substitute the term probate. Why is it important? The process of obtaining a grant of probate in Singapore can last from a few months to two years or more. Meanwhile, there is expenditure such as funeral expenses and other bills to be taken care of, so the deceased’s family may be facing difficult cash-flow problems. Worse still, if the assets of the deceased are not properly managed or if the estate has to pay fees while it is being managed, the overall value of th...
