Fed Cuts Interest Rate to 3% as U.S. Growth Falters
2008-01-31 00:40:00 Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- The Federal Reserve lowered its benchmark interest rate by half a point to 3 percent, the second cut in nine days, and indicated its willingness to do so again to prevent a U.S. recession. ``Downside risks to growth remain,'' the Federal Open Market Committee said in a statement after meeting today in Washington. In a reference to the volatility of the past five months, the Fed added that ``financial markets remain under considerable stress and credit has tightened further for some businesses and households.'' The dollar tumbled and two-year Treasury notes rose after the decision as traders anticipated another reduction at the Fed's March meeting, if not before. The cumulative reduction in rates since Jan. 22 is the fastest easing of monetary policy since 1990. Dollar Is Little Changed Before Fed's Interest-Rate Decision

The central bank made an emergency cut of three-quarters of a percentage point on Jan. 22 to prevent a U.S. recession after stocks fell from Hong Kong to London. A government report showed yesterday that orders for U.S. durable goods rose last month more than economists forecast, indicating the economy may weather the housing slump. ``I still think they will do a 50-basis-point cut, but this report slightly raises the risk to that call,'' providing support for the dollar, said Richard Franulovich, a senior currency strategist in New York at Westpac Banking Corp. U.K. Currency Trading Averages $1.3 Trillion a Day
2008-01-28 23:52:00 By Kim-Mai Cutler Jan. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Foreign exchange turnover increased 7 percent in the U.K. to $1.3 trillion a day in the six months ended in October, according to a Bank of England-affiliated study. The U.K.'s daily turnover, which the Foreign Exchange Joint Standing Committee said was $1.5 trillion including currency options and swaps trading, was more than twice that of the U.S., where spot, forward, swaps and options transactions averaged $701 billion a day in October. U.K. turnover in October rose 38 percent from October 2006, while U.S. trading rose 31 percent. ``Foreign exchange is increasingly being seen as an asset class in its own right,'' said Neil Mellor, a London-based currency strategist at Bank of New York. ``London is the foreign exchange capital of the world, and a lot of banks realize this is the place to be.'' Growth slowed to a 1.2 percent annual rate from October to December, a quarter of the previous three months' pace, according to the median estimate of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. Other reports may show the jobless rate held at a two-year high this month and consumer spending cooled in December. Having looked deeply into the abyss, an emergency US rate cut dragged us back from the edge so that indices and Yen crosses ended the week at or slightly up from where they started. Some are labelling this week the darkest hour just before dawn but we disagree. A similar idea for money market futures and Treasury yields where US two-year TNotes dropped as low as 1.85% and Canadian ten-year bonds to a fifty year low of 3.62%. Benchmark ten-year Singapore government bond yields dropped to 2.20% and JGB’s 1.295%. All yields, including Libor, are up a bit from Wednesday’s extremes. The FX market has been relatively stable compared to all of the above although the US dollar against some currencies (CHF, CZK, EUR, and SGD) is very close to its weakest ever/or in many years. The currencies fell yesterday against those of countries with high interest rates including the Brazilian real and New Zealand dollar. The yen fell against the Brazilian real after a plan to raise new capital for bond insurers boosted U.S. stocks by the most in two months, increasing demand for so-called carry trades. Soros Sees End of Dollar as World's Reserve Currency
2008-01-23 15:44:00 By Edward Evans and Simon Kennedy Jan. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Billionaire investor George Soros said the fallout from the U.S. subprime crisis will bring about the end of the dollar's status as the world's reserve currency. ``The current crisis is not only the bust that follows the housing boom, it's basically the end of a 60-year period of continuing credit expansion based on the dollar as the reserve currency,'' Soros said in a debate today at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. ``Now the rest of the world is increasingly unwilling to accumulate dollars.'' The dollar's share of global foreign-exchange reserves fell to a record low of 63.8 percent in the third quarter as demand for U.S. assets waned after the collapse of the U.S. housing market, according to International Monetary Fund data. Purchases fell 1 percent last month to a 4.95 million rate, the fewest since comparable records began in 1999, according to the median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey ahead of the National Association of Realtors' report due Jan. 24. Falling property values and tougher borrowing rules will lead to more foreclosures and keep the real-estate market in recession for most of this year, economists said.
