[MP3] Copy: “Fist” & “Closet Face”
2007-12-06 04:55:00 I’ve always been a fan of Audio Dregs and the music they release. It probably started with an early 2000’s fascination with electronica, mainly stemming from underground artists like E*Vax, E*Rock, Lineland, Ratatat, etc, all once or currently housed at AD. Somehow I missed the release of Copy ’s sophomore album Hair Guitar earlier this year, a continuation of Marius Libman’s fascination with computerized electro/synth pop music. If you’re into this type of music, Hair Guitar is a near-perfect album. You’ll obsess over the endless melodies, gooey synth, and general ebullient nature of the music. It’s perfect for after-parties, long car rides, and drowning out the occasional static hiss of daily life. If things are feeling a little boring lately, let’s say “less than exciting,” Copy should do the trick to lure your mind away from some banal inevitability like backgammon or watching Celebrity Exposé because nothing else ... Politics Tuesday (on Wednesday): No Blue in the Race to Presidency [Shiftin
2007-12-06 01:03:00 Posted by Jack Sterne, jack@oceanchampions.org I have to confess, I got nothin’ this week. Oh sure, there were articles this week in the New York Times on how red tide is causing major problems for California sea lions, and plenty of gloom and doom in other areas. Although the global warming meeting in Bali, while not likely to lead to major breakthroughs, is a potential bright spot just because it’s happening. But really, I’m drawing a blank, and so is everyone else on our team, which is why you didn’t see a post yesterday. So instead, I’ll just pose a question: Does the presidential race matter to the oceans? To the environment, in general? The oceans obviously aren’t a campaign issue, but does anybody see anything that hightens your confidence in any of the candidates, with regard to their position on environmental issues? I mean come one, where’s The Climate Crisis in their talking point script? Why isn’t anyone asking? What ... More About: Politics , Race , Blue , Presidency , Tuesday

Blognation Meltdown: Writers Never Paid, Promises Not Kept
2007-12-05 16:53:00 There’s big trouble over at the UK based BlogNation network today with US editor Oliver Starr resigning. In a parting shot to network owner Sam Sethi, Starr alleges that he and other BlogNation writers have not been paid. The following was taken verbatim from a post at BlogNation (since deleted); we’ll let Oliver Starr’s words speak for themselves: AN OPEN LETTER TO SAM SETHI Please Note: This is an open letter to Sam Sethi, Founder and CEO of Blognation. I have elected to write this letter after having been one of the principal Blognation authors since August of this year. In all that time I have not received the pay promised in my contract nor the reimbursement promised for expenses incurred on behalf of Blognation during this period. I am not alone. Every other Blognation author is in the same unsavory situation. This open letter details in very broad strokes the reasons why I have lost faith in Sam. It makes specific statements as to the veracity of things Sa... More About: Paid , Writers , Promises
European Court: Murderer Has Right to Become Father, Britain to Pay Damages
2007-12-05 16:53:00 A quote from The [London] Times, 5 December 2007Britain breached the human rights of a murderer and his wife by refusing them access to IVF treatment, the European Court ruled yesterday. Kirk Dickson, 35, and his wife Lorraine [49] now have the right to start a family even though he is serving a life sentence. […]They had launched a legal battle in October 2001, but David Blunkett, then Home Secretary, rejected their claim. The Dicksons took their fight to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, where, in April 2006, they lost again. However, the court’s Grand Chamber overturned that ruling yesterday, voting 12 to 5 in favour of allowing the couple access to the treatment and awarding them €5,000 (£3,500) in damages and €21,000 in costs. The couple’s lawyer, Elkan Abrahamson, said last night that they were both elated at the decision. However, it would make little difference because Dickson was now in an open prison and allowed home leave. Original post by http:... More About: Father , Damages

2007-12-05 16:52:00 There are 45 days until the Science Blog ging Conference . The wiki is looking good, the Program is shaping up nicely, and there is more and more blog and media coverage already. The anthology should be published in time for the event. Propofol (Milk of Amnesia) [Molecule of the Day]
2007-12-05 05:11:00 Anaesthetics are weird. Much of what we use has a paucity of the oxygens and nitrogens that seems to make most drugs work, and there’s been substantial puzzlement and handwringing over exactly how some of these things work. Xenon, for example, is a fine anaesthetic that is, of course, comprised of a single atom. Similarly, highly halogenated molecules that are otherwise uninteresting are common. NYT covers Kristine Comer’s Resignation [Greg Laden’s Blog]
2007-12-05 04:55:00 After 27 years as a science teacher and 9 years as the Texas Education Agency’s director of science, Christine Castillo Comer said she did not think she had to remain “neutral” about teaching the theory of evolution. “It’s not just a good idea; it’s the law,” said Ms. Comer, citing the state’s science curriculum. But now Ms. Comer, 56, of Austin, is out of a job, after forwarding an e-mail message on a talk about evolution and creationism — “a subject on which the agency must remain neutral,” according to a dismissal letter last month that accused her of various instances of “misconduct and insubordination” and of siding against creationism and the doctrine that life is the product of “intelligent design.” Read the whole sordid story here. Salesforce Facilitates Data Exchange Between Tenants
2007-12-05 04:31:00 Tomorrow Salesforce will launch a new service called Salesforce to Salesforce (S2S) that facilitates the sharing of data between companies that use Salesforce’s software as a service (SaaS). Companies have heretofore been able to manage their organizational data, whether CRM-related or not, with Salesforce applications provided by AppExchange or built on Force.com. However, their data was largely cut off from other companies, or “tenants”, who also use Salesforce’s hosted software. With S2S, businesses can now share data with partner companies, thereby taking advantage of Salesforce’s multi-tenancy architecture. Salesforce claims to be modeling S2S off the sharing functionality of social networks like Facebook. To share data, such as leads or plans, you simply search for contacts from within your browser and create “connections” with them. Data objects land in their inboxes, from which they can choose to accept the objects or not. Once acce... More About: Tenants , Tena

NPR’s Iowa Debate Part 2
2007-12-04 23:02:00 The NPR Radio Debate is available on NPR’s web site. No cameras. No audience. Only three big topics to be covered. (Note: Richardson is attending a funeral and is not present.) Topic continues to be China. And… we’re back. Question: Many candidates have talked tough about human rights in China, but trade always seems to win out over rights. Biden: I’ve pushed that we hold China accountable at the UN, but we won’t even hold them accountable. That’s capitulation. We wouldn’t allow any other country to get away with this. Clinton: Agree with Joe. I’ve been to China and stood up for rights, but my speech was blocked. Chinese will respect us if we call them on their bad behavior. This administration has given neither smart enforcement or informed cooperation. (follow up on whether Clinton advised Bill after overseas trips). Yes, deeply involved. Dodd: Praised the Dal... IBD Editorial: CAIR Hyping Hate Crime Against Muslims
2007-12-04 22:47:00 Another excellent editorial from Investor’s Business Daily on the radical Islamic front group CAIR and their inflated claims of “hate crimes” against Muslims : Hyping Hate Crime Vs. Muslims. It’s plain that CAIR, which claims to be the “Muslim NAACP,” has been hyping tensions. Every year the pressure group releases a report citing thousands of alleged civil-rights and physical abuses against Muslims, which largely are based on anecdotal reporting from members. Despite CAIR’s obvious bias (and proven record of dissembling), the PC-addled media report its numbers unfiltered and without question. But if you peel them back, you find they’re mostly victimless crimes. For instance, in its 2006 report released in June, CAIR listed as a “hate crime” the following example: “A copy of the Quran was found in a toilet at the library of Pace University in New York.” There are other atrocities, too, such as someone trampling o...
