Charles Krauthammer’s embryonic brain [The Island of Doubt]
2007-12-04 22:26:00
A little press-commentary comparison shopping is in order following the recent news of a breakthrough in the effort to produce stem cells without using embryonic cells. I promise this won’t take long. First, the Washington Post’s Charles Krauthammer, who announced that Bush was right all along to restrict federal funding for embryonic stem cell research: Read the rest of this post… | Read the comments on this post… Original post by http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Scienceblo gsCombinedFeed/~3/195020495/charles_kraut hammers_embryonic.php

OH-5 GOTV: How you can help Robin Weirauch win
2007-12-04 22:23:00
(From the diaries, the ground game is critical in this race, so all the virtual phone banking help will be crucial to winning the seat — kos) The special election in OH-5 is heating up beyond anyone’s expectations. This is a race of national significance as a loss for the GOP would be detrimental in a district that has been solidly Republican for years. Ohio Democrats from all over the state are putting forth a concentrated GOTV effort in the district.  We now need Democrats across the nation to join our effort by calling Ohioans and talking to them about Robin ’s message of more jobs, better health care and ending the war in Iraq. It’s time to make this happen. Volunteer today for Robin’s Virtual Phonebank. It is easy to do and you can call from virtually anywhere. We need your help to put Robin over the top on December 11th. Contact Jason at phonebank4robin@gmail.com to sign up for Robin’s Virtual Phonebank. For canvassing and phonebanking...

Visible Path Sees Its Way To An Acquisition
2007-12-04 22:21:00
Corporate social networking application Visible Path is set for an acquisition soon. The term sheet has been signed and the acquirer, says the company, is a “multi-billion dollar international company with established sales and technology operations.” No word on the terms of the deal, but a worthwhile exit price would be high considering the $22.7 million already invested in the firm. Visible Path differs from other business social networks like LinkedIn or Xing, by creating your social network out of your email inbox. The service is based on an Outlook plug-in that impressed us earlier because your connections are based on the frequency of your real interactions and not random friending or pokes. These relationships are mapped online and make up a directory of people you can search through by skill or relationship. It’s a useful feature that I imagine a service like the “email utility” Xobni implementing. Crunch Network: CrunchGear drool over the se...

Symbolic Denials Continue
2007-12-04 22:16:00
As Gates of Vienna launches another diversionary defense of the far-right Vlaams Belang, this time denying that there’s any significance at all to the numerous white power symbols (especially the Odin’s Cross) we’ve discovered in VB youth magazines, on their web sites, and even on Filip DeWinter’s bookshelf—have a look at BabbaZee’s site, where she utterly destroys Baron Bodissey’s ludicrous denials: Lebensborn to Make a Reich, Baby. Karl Rove LIes Through His Teeth [Dispatches from the Culture Wars]
2007-12-04 17:09:00
Rove may be out of the White House, but he’s still lying for Jesus Bush. Check out this post with a transcript from the Charlie Rose show where Rove tries to claim that it was Congress who rushed through the resolution authorizing the Iraq war in the fall of 2002, that the administration didn’t think it was appropriate to do so during the midterm election. Rove says: Because, we didn’t think it belonged within the confines of the election. There was an election coming up in a matter of weeks. We thought it made it too political. We wanted it outside the confines of it. It seemed to make things move too fast. There were things that needed to be done to bring along allies and potential allies abroad. Yeah. That would be a lot more credible if the White House website didn’t include press releases that declared President Urges Congress to Pass Iraq Resolution Quickly dated September 24, 2002. Journalistic Objectivity [Dispatches from the Culture Wars]
2007-12-04 17:02:00
My new gig with the Center for Independent Media has been quite interesting, if for no other reason than to stimulate my thinking about the differences between blogging and journalism and how to find a balance between them that maintains integrity. Notice that I say integrity, not objectivity; the concept of objectivity has become so attenuated that it is no longer useful at all in such discussions. Sometimes that balance can be difficult to strike, but here’s one thing I am absolutely certain of: the mere repetition of “both sides” in a dispute is not “objectivity”, nor does it have any integrity. Glenn Greenwald hits the nail on the head in this essay about the Washington Post passing on blatant lies about Barack Obama in one of those ridiculous forwarded emails you’ve probably gotten declaring that Obama is secretly a Muslim. Science Blogging Conference - who is coming? (The hosts: Sigma Xi and The A
2007-12-04 16:56:00
There are 46 days until the Science Blogging Conference . The wiki is looking good, the Program is shaping up nicely, and there is more and more blog and media coverage already. The anthology should be published in time for the event. There are already 163 registered participants and if you do not register soon, it may be too late once you decide to do so (we’ll cap at about 200). Between now and the conference, I am highlighting some of the people who will be there, for you to meet in person if you register in time. Roger Harris is the Director of Membership & Chapters of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society. The conference will take place in the Sigma Xi building. Roger also started an educational site, Jungle Photos. Sigma Xi is the publisher of the popular science magazine, The American Scientist, where David Schoonmaker is the managing editor. In order to meet him, you know what you have to do: register! Registration is free. Check the map for nearby hotel...

The unbearable lightweightness of being David Kirby [Respectful Insolence]
2007-12-04 16:52:00
Remember how I speculated that appointing die-hard antivaccinationists to the new federal panel on autism research and policy would be a propaganda boon to the antivaccination movement and the mercury militia? Surprise, surprise! It’s already happening. Even less of a surprise, first off the mark to gloat is everybody’s favorite whore for the mercury militia appearing (as usual) in his favorite house organ of antivaccination propaganda, The Huffington Post. First, of course, he has to “frame” things to represent himself as the brave, brave iconoclast, fighting against those evil scientists who want to keep our children autistic by vaccinating the hell out of them: Read the rest of this post… | Read the comments on this post… Original post by http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Scienceblo gsCombinedFeed/~3/194961898/antivaccinati onists_appointed_to_federal_1.php

Carnival of the Blue #7 [Deep Sea News]
2007-12-04 16:51:00
This month’s Carnival of the Blue is happening now at The Natural Patriot. The quality and layout have improved remarkably over time, due largely to the efforts of past Carnival hosts. This is also one of the better moderated collections so far. Host Emmett Duffy does a great job providing a few words of background on each of the eighteen ocean stories hosted there. The Carnival sideshows include musings on sharks, seagrass, snapping shrimp, Cyclone Sidr, and the Carbon Tax, as well as a profile of the “modern pirate” at the helm of the Sea Shepard, interesting talk about a jellyfish diet, and nefarious tales from the deep-sea lovers here at DSN and over there at the Other 95%. Kevin Zelnio just completed his comprehensive exams, and he’s celebrating by going public with his dissertation proposal. Some good news! [Pharyngula]
2007-12-04 16:43:00
After being imprisoned and facing a lynch mob, the teacher in Sudan whose class named a teddy bear “Mohammed” has finally been freed. She has a very positive attitude and says nothing but generous things about the people of Sudan, and thanks the Sudanese government for letting her have a bed while she was in prison. I think she’s a bit deranged, actually. A bed is an exceptional gift to a prisoner? She was sentenced to prison for naming a teddy bear? Mobs were howling for her execution for that “crime”? And she says, “I wouldn’t like to put anyone off going to Sudan.” Too late. I’m quite put off, and think the Sudan is a hell-hole for lunatics. The Graduation of the Incredibly Strange EU-Trained Palestinian Female Poli
2007-12-04 07:04:00
EU-trained women join Palestinian police. JERICHO, West Bank - The first class of Palestinian policewomen to complete a new European Union-sponsored training program graduated Sunday, part of a broader EU makeover of the demoralized and ill-equipped Palestinian law enforcement agencies. The 45 rookies will join a small group of women serving in a role still largely frowned upon in conservative Palestinian society. Arms swinging, backs ramrod straight, the new graduates marched across the academy’s parade ground in the desert oasis of Jericho. The women, many with Islamic headscarves under their police berets, wore blue shirts, black pants and combat boots. Original post by http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/?e ntry=28153&only&rss

Empressr Rebuilds Presentation Tool in Flex
2007-12-04 05:18:00
It’s been over a year since we last covered online presentation tool Empressr. Tonight the company releases version 3 of its product, which has been rebuilt completely in Flex . Much of the improvements in this third version are structural, so you might not see much on the surface. Among the noticeable improvements is a new film strip for viewing the slides in a presentation. Click on the middle button at the bottom of the player and you’ll see thumbnail previews of these slides. Empressr sports an impressively functional presentation tool accessible entirely through the web browser. The point is basically to bring PowerPoint online so you can easily share and collaborate on presentations. Currently, Empressr prides itself in the ability to bring content into your slides from around the web. Movies and photos don’t need to be hosted by Empressr to be embedded in your presentations; you can pull them from Flickr, YouTube, etc. Completed presentations can also be embe...

Telefônica revela planos para “super banda larga”
2007-12-04 05:11:00

The Republicans on Biblical Literalism [EvolutionBlog]

The subject of biblical literalism came up at last week’s Republican / You Tube debate: Joseph: I am Joseph. Don Imus Back on Radio: Media Got it Wrong
2007-12-04 04:32:00
Don Imus is back on radio. Tonight on CBS network nightly news with Katie Couric, the Imus clip was terrific. He said he would not do anything to make the women of the Rutgers team question the sincerity of his earlier apology. Then… in case people who love him feared he’d lost his brand of humor… he said that Dick Cheney is still a war criminal and Hillary Clinton is still the devil… and that he’d signed a five year contract, because it was going to take that long to get back at everyone. He was in fine fettle. Then CBS nightly news drove straight into the offal pile by running a LOUD voice-over of Imus calling the Rutgers players “Nappy headed ho’s.” Remember it was McGuirk who’d led that charge with Imus sleepwalking into it… see earlier article here… FOUL! CBS news. You ought to be fined for running that voice-over. FOUL! You’re supposed to have at least room temperature I.Q.s over there. Imus JUST SAI...

Montel Williams’ blow-up: a symptom of multiple sclerosis or bad judg
2007-12-04 04:30:00
I was way behind on this story relative to the pharma blogosphere (John Mack’s Pharma Marketing Blog, Ed Silverman’s Pharmalot, and the WSJ Health Blog), but Mont el Williams has created a PR disaster for Partnership for Prescription Assistance of the industry group, PhRMA (Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America). While promoting prescription assistance programs in Savannah on Friday, Williams blew up, as it were, at a Savannah Morning News high school intern. The intern, Courtney Scott, asked Williams, “Do you think pharmaceutical companies would be discouraged from research and development if their profits were restricted?” Williams abruptly canceled the interview but later ran into Scott and two other reporters at the Westin Savannah Harbor where they were doing a feature on gingerbread houses. Thinking that Scott had followed him, AP/MSNBC reported the following: Williams walked up to Scott and told her that “I can look you up, find w...

Talking about Racism [Greg Laden’s Blog]
2007-12-04 04:25:00
I came across this interesting post by PortlyDyke: Trying to Get White People to Talk About Racism is Like . . . . . . . . . well, like trying to get white people to talk about Racism. … I mention this because I read a wide variety of blogs, and I notice that while a number of my favorite bloggers do write posts on race and racism, there is this interesting thing that happens in comment threads to these posts — if the blog is not frequented mostly by people of color, the comment threads very often stray from anything remotely touching on race or racism, and quickly become about “oppression in general”, or a particular commenter’s “Me Too!” pointing toward their own particular oppression.
