The Laelaps Movie of the Week: Something is Out There (AKA Day of the Anima
2007-12-02 04:56:00 Most of my nightmares aren’t rated PG, but if they involved a crazed and shirtless Leslie Neilson, they would be pretty terrifying indeed. Throw in a few cougars, birds, bears, wolves, a pack of purebred German Shepards, a motley crew of campers, and a mysterious hole in the ozone layer and you’ve got the 1977 film Some thing is Out There (also known as Day of the Anima ls), one of the worst revenge-of-nature films I’ve ever seen. Do insects feel pain? [Neurophilosophy]
2007-12-02 03:33:00 Using sophisticated techniques to silence or activate specific neurons, researchers from Stanford University have established that a simple behaviour used by fruit fly larvae to evade attack from parasitic wasps is triggered by a type of sensory neuron that is similar to the neurons which respond to painful stimuli in mammals. Anthony Flew, Intelligent Design Supporter, Soft on Eugenics [Greg Laden&rs
2007-12-02 03:31:00 John Lynch is reporting: ID supporters seem to like Antony Flew, the one-time atheist philosopher who has apparently seen the light and become a deist. They have awarded him the Phillip Johnson Award for Liberty and Truth, they have lauded his latest book, and Bill Dembski exclaims “God bless Antony Flew!” But at the risk of raining on the parade, there’s something that Bill needs to realize - the fearless Flew seems to have a very ambivalent attitude (to put it mildly) to eugenics. Prometheus Books recently published its New Encyclopedia of Unbelief, a work to which I provided an entry on Haeckel and co-wrote (with Matt Young) the entry on unbelief among scientists. While browsing my copy, I stumbled across the entry on eugenics (pp. 294 - 296, pdf), written by none other that Antony Flew…. Indeed, this gets very interesting. Google Reveals 2008 Plans For Google Apps
2007-12-02 03:11:00 Google is usually fairly tight lipped about future product releases. But they were surprisingly revealing about upcoming plans for Google Apps at an event in Ann Arbor earlier this week. Blogger Andrew Miller took some great notes from a presentation by Googler Scott Johnston, the VP of Product Development at wiki startup Jot prior to their acquisition by Google a little over a year ago. First, Google Sites, an evolution of Google Page Creator, will launch in 2008 . Google Sites will be based on JotSpot collaboration tools and will allow businesses to create intranets, project management tracking, extranets and other custom sites. We should also expect Google Docs, Gmail and Calendar to soon work offline via Google Gears. This has been widely predicted, but it’s good to see it coming more formally from Google (note that Zoho, a Google Docs competitor, already has offline functionality via Google Gears). Some of the other stuff is more speculative, but worth the read (pivot tabl... More About: Google , Plans
More About: Feedburner , Icas
Fact-Checking Richard Dawkins [The Corpus Callosum]
2007-12-02 02:37:00 In the book, The Blind Watchmaker, Richard Dawkins makes a statement that led one reader to feel the need to check up on him: I’ve been reading through Richard Dawkins’ books and am currently half way through The Blind Watchmaker (2006 paperback edition) and on page 119 he writes: In my computer’s ROM, location numbers 64489, 64490 and 64491, taken together, contain a particular pattern of contents—1s and 0s which—when interpreted as instructions, result in the computer’s little loudspeaker uttering a blip sound. This bit pattern is 10101101 00110000 11000000. Of course, this piqued my curiosity. Did Dawkins just make that up, or is this really the contents of a specific bit of memory on a specific computer? The original post is here. The book was published in 1986, back in the days when regular folks still knew how to skin pigs, change their spark plugs, and check the contents of specific ROM addresses. &... Reacting to Jehovah’s Witnesses’ refusal to accept blood transf
2007-12-01 23:02:00 Yesterday, I wrote about the overwhelmingly sad case of Dennis Lindberg, the 14-year old Jehovah ’s Witness who died because of his misguided adherence to the twisted interpretation of a 3,000 year old Biblical text and the court’s acquiescence to this lunacy. So did P. Z. Myers. In response to the post on Pharyngula, I saw a comment that disturbed me greatly: At the hospital where I work we have a procedure in place just for JW’s. We have a stack of court orders waiting. When the patient loses consciousness a doctor fills out a form declaring them no longer capable of making their own decisions, someone fills in the name and date on the court order and takes it to the judge (who is not like THAT judge), wakes him up if necessary, he signs, we give the transfusion. If parents are refusing treatment for a minor, we call the police and they are arrested for criminal neglect of a minor. If the patient lives, we drop the charges. Sometimes, of course, this all takes too... More About: Witnesses , Blood , Accept , Tran
Brussels: Coalition Talks Collapse. Belgians Don’t Need No Government
2007-12-01 23:00:00 Today, on the 174th day after the June 10th general elections in Belgium, Yves Leterme, the leader of the Flemish Christian-Democrats, told King Albert II that it is impossible for him to form a government. Belgium is a multinational country consisting of 6 million Dutch-speakers in Flanders and 4 million French-speakers in Wallonia. The Flemings want more regional autonomy, the Walloons oppose it because they are at the receiving end of the Belgian welfare mechanism. Mr. Leterme won the elections because he went to the elections in an alliance with Flemish Nationalists and promised the Flemings that he would give Flanders more autonomy. Last week Mr. Leterme, for the sake of the country’s reputation abroad, told the Walloon parties that he was willing to tone down on his Flemish demands in order to facilitate the formation of a government. Within a few hours he and the Walloon Christian-Democrats and Liberals had reached an agreement. This agreement, however, led to a ... More About: Government , Collapse , Brussels , Coalition

Hillary Clinton’s Hostage Ordeal: Lemon To Lemonade?
2007-12-01 22:54:00 Did New York Senator and aspiring 2008 Democratic Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton turn the ugly hostage crisis at her campaign headquarters to her advantage — a classic case of getting a lemon and making lemonade? The Friday incident at Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign office in Rochester, N.H. campaign office ended happily. And some pundits think that is placed Clinton into a new framework where she could have looked powerless or Presidential. The verdict: she came out of it with a stronger image. The Politico: And as soon as it ended, Clinton took full advantage of the opportunity she had unexpectedly been handed. In her New Hampshire press conference, she stood before a column of police in green and tan uniforms. She talked of meeting with hostages. She mentioned that she spoke to the state’s governor about eight minutes after the incident began. The scene was one of a woman in charge. “It looked and sounded presidential,” said Larry Sabato, director of the Un... More About: Lemon , Lemonade , Hostage , Nade

Canadian Islamic Congress Sues to Silence Mark Steyn
2007-12-01 22:04:00 The Canadian Islamic Congress has filed “human rights” complaints against Maclean’s magazine for publishing an excerpt from Mark Steyn’s book “America Alone,” which the CIC labels not just “Islamophobic,” but flagrantly Islamophobic: Canadian Islamic Congress launches human rights complaints against Maclean’s. Complaints were submitted to Human Rights Commissions in B.C. and Ontario on the grounds that “the article subjects Canadian Muslims to hatred and contempt,” according to a CIC press release. In the release, the CIC labels Steyn’s article as “flagrantly Islamophobic.” Faisal Joseph is the CIC’s legal counsel on the matter. “In Canada, we have 750,000 law-abiding Muslims,” he says. “When you read that article, it sounds to some people [like] there’s an attack from the ‘Muslim’ world against the ‘non-Muslim’ world. Man and Beast Are Mortal, But Measts Are Forever
2007-12-01 21:39:00 Can’t stop, won’t stop. The past few days have been unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Over the years I have endured the loss of three grandparents as they struggled against the diseases of old age. In high school a favorite teacher of mine was tragically taken from us far too soon. All of the experience were uniquely painful and this is no different, but of course I never knew Sean Taylor. Sean was my favorite player, mostly not reasons that are difficult to articulate. His insistences to jump routes, go for the knockout instead wrapping up, and lateral any ball that he was unable to advance used to frustrate the shit out of me. Over time I came to not only accept, but embrace these tendencies as I began to realize that they are symptoms of what I loved so much about the player. He would do absolutely anything to make the biggest impact possible. Sean played the game one way, with balls firmly affixed to the proverbial wall. Yet most people still don’t ... Scientists, Philosophers and Historians playing nice together [Stranger Fru
2007-12-01 21:37:00 In his discussion of West’s recent talk in Minnesota, PZ notes: I am extremely impressed with the fact that the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior at the University of Minnesota has a historian and philosopher of science on their faculty — more biology departments ought to make those kinds of strategic alliances to broaden and deepen their discipline. I wholeheartedly agree. Here at Arizona State, the School of Life Sciences is the home for not only the Center for Biology & Society, but also the History and Philosophy of Science Program. We also have recently started a graduate program in Human and Social Dimensions in Science & Technology. Central to all of this has been getting scientists talking to - and collaborating with - historians and philosophers. It’s all very exciting. One source of inefficiency in American health care [Respectful Insolence]
2007-12-01 17:00:00 The Buckeye Surgeon educates us with a case. In brief, it’s the case of an elderly woman with a clinical picture, including right upper quadrant pain and an elevated white blood cell count consistent with rip-roaring cholecystitis who was admitted to the medical service for her right upper quadrant pain. She underwent an ultrasound, which was consistent with rip-roaring cholecystitis, after which she was admitted to the medical service, which duly consulted the gastroenterology service. Then a CT scan was ordered, which showed a rip-roaring case of cholecystitis. Then the patient was bowel-prepped and underwent upper and lower endoscopy and the patient treated for gastritis. Then she underwent a cardiology consult, which failed to find a cardiac cause. Finally she underwent a HIDA scan, which is very specific for cholecystitis. And then the surgeon was called. This was a case about which a couple of old attendings in my residency program would have a sarcastic saying about, on... More About: Health , Health Care , Source , American , Care

I am a parent-blogger [On being a scientist and a woman]
2007-12-01 16:54:00 Kate, our lovely host for the December edition of Scientiae has decreed that the theme is “transcending the debate.” Here’s my (late) entry. Look for the carnival up around the 3rd. Much of what I’ve been blogging about lately has not particularly been about science or about women in science or about women at all. Sleep issues, daycare dilemmas, family-friendly cars, etc. are hardly the terrain I was writing about when I launched this blog 2.5 years ago. But they occupy a lot of my mental space today. Since moving to Scienceblogs.com, the number of male commenters on this blog has increased significantly. I could attribute this solely to the majority male readership of the uber-domain, but email conversations with several of my new readers suggest that this is not so. Men seem to be reading this blog because at least some of what I talk about applies to their lives too. Read the rest of this post… | Read the comments on this post… Original p... World AIDS day 2007 - Denialism is still a problem [denialism blog]
2007-12-01 16:51:00 Today is World AIDS day, and it’s important to take a minute to discuss HIV and AIDS since this blog addresses HIV/AIDS denialism. While the the UN made a mistake overestimating world HIV/AIDS statistics (it is good news and not for the reasons cranks like) Estimates of new HIV transmission in the US are rising. This is bad news. At the same time you have HIV/AIDS denialists still persisting in spreading their nonsense, cranks like Michael Fumento spreading the misinformation that heterosexual transmission of HIV is a “myth”, and that the figures for Africa are a conspiracy by UNAIDS and WHO to get more money (he thinks 32 million is still too high and it’s more likely to be around 8 million). Let’s go over some of the current data on HIV transmission, who is most at risk, why HIV/AIDS is still a problem in the US and worldwide, and why people like Fumento should keep their crank nonsense to themselves. As an added incentive, I’ll include a li... More About: Blog , Problem , Aids , World Aids Day

Rumors Over Facts: The Washington Post Explains

I was not alone in my outrage. As cataloged in a diary by psericks, Media Matters pointed out that they, “reported only Obama’s denials of madrassa smear, not media debunkings,” while the Columbia Journalism Review called it, “the single worst campaign ‘08 piece to appear in any American newspaper so far this election cycle.” Even the Washington Post’s own political cartoonist slammed the newspaper, with his caption reading, “So much discussion they ran out of space for the word ‘lies’.&rd...
