heart attacks in women: symptoms
2007-04-25 00:24:00 A friend forwarded this email today, and I thought I'd post it to reach as many people as possible. The symptoms of heart attack vary widely between women and men. It's important that we all learn how to recognize these symptoms. Hollywood does a good job of educating us on male symptoms, but that's only half the world's population.---Did you know that women rarely have the same dramatic symptoms that men have when experiencing heart attack...you know, the sudden stabbing pain in the chest, the cold sweat, grabbing the chest & dropping to the floor that we see in the movies. Here is the story of one woman's experience with a heart attack.I had a completely unexpected heart attack at about 10:30 pm with NO prior exertion, NO prior emotional trauma that one would suspect might've brought it on. I was sitting all snugly & warm on a cold evening, with my purring cat in my lap, reading an interesting story my friend had sent me, and actually thinking,"A-A-h, this is the life, a... East Sooke Park
2007-04-23 02:56:00 This weekend Lisa, Daniela and I decided to ditch the dudes and have a Chick Day. We had lunch at the 17 mile pub, followed by a walk in East Sooke Park .We had a great 3-hour walk through beautiful rainforest along the coast. While the view is very similar to what I see from my living room window, it's nice to be able to access wild-ish forest so close to an urban centre. It's definitely one of the benefits of living in this part of the world. As for the trees, only the strong ones are still standing. You could see the damage from this winter's fierce wind storms everywhere.
Swing team performance - June 3/06
2006-06-06 20:50:00 Here's a video of my first performance with Red Hot Swing at the Royal Theatre. The song is called "Shout and Feel It." Rajeev and I (the couple in the middle) had just finished learning the routine a few days before, so we were pretty nervous about remembering everything and doing the aerials properly. Normally we're supposed to start on stage, but the music started before we had a chance to get out there, which is why we run on. I'm so happy with how this turned out! Pen palling goes high tech
2006-02-15 18:59:00 In September 2005 I discovered a project called postcrossing. It's a virtual community of people who enjoy sending and receiving post cards. These days email has practically taken over personal communication, but postcrossing means that there's often a nice surprise waiting in your mailbox (instead of just bills), just like in the ol' days of snail mail. This image is a map of my postcrossing so far. The red lines are cards I've sent, and blue lines are cards received. Since the project is the brainchild of a guy in Portugal, there are a lot of members in that country and in Brazil. I was particularly excited to get the first post card sent from Oman, and to send one to the Azores. Yesterday I received one from my favourite country (Australia) and also one from a Russian woman living in Guinea, West Africa. The way it works is that you send 5 postcards to random members (the addresses are emailed to you one at a time), then 5 random members receive your address and you start recei... another 30 seconds of fame
2006-02-09 23:48:00 Snoozing in bed this morning at about 8:15 I heard myself on the radio! I recorded a commercial a couple of weeks ago and it's finally on air. If you're in Victoria listen to The Ocean 98.5 FM between 5 and 9 am. Here's the spot for the rest of you ... I'm the second voice, beginning with the line "Oh that's lovely." Click on the play button at the lower left of the window, and wait a couple of seconds for it to play. No special software required.I've done several voice-overs and I really enjoy it. Check out other examples of my voice-over work on my Ahem Productions blog here. More About: Fame , Econ , Seconds

Hymie's first steps
2005-12-06 21:47:00 Hymie has now officially ended his "break in" period. We've done 1500 kms since Nov. 3. According to the manual, now I can stop being gentle and take him at top speeds. oooh! The Club Smart Car folks seem to love the avatar I'm using on their site. One person wrote, "OH MY GOD. That rocks. Definitely the best forum avatar I've ever seen. That exactly captures the inner feeling I think of just about every fortwo driver in Canada." Another said, "Great avatar Ahem. LMAO." I'm not really up on cyber-lingo but I think LMAO must mean something like "laughing my ass off." More About: Step , Steps

Hymie does Vancouver Island
2005-11-29 20:49:00 Last weekend the fog finally cleared, after what seemed like weeks of being socked in. The sun came out and I hunted for my sunglasses. Perfect weather for a drive! I took Hymie and Ma up-island to visit Grandpa. He lives in Nanaimo, which according to my Japanese teacher back at university, literally translated means "seven potatoes." The drive takes about 1.5 hours on the highway. Yet again, my new car expands my horizons as I can actually drive on the highway. We had lunch at the Crow and Gate, a cute little pub in Cedar. Here's some pics of Ma (looking great at 60-something), Grandpa (an amazingly youthful 89), and me (at only *cough* 39). What's your secret to looking so young, Grandpa? "Drink beer!"... and of course the obligatory baby pics of Hymie: More About: Vancouver , Island
Cowichan Cow Chase
2005-11-09 01:37:00 Three days after getting my Smart car, I joined the Smart Marmots (Vancouver Island chapter of Club Smart Car) for a rally. We drove up to Lake Cowichan for brunch, then through the back roads along the lake and around Duncan, Mill Bay and Crofton. It was fun driving Smarts in formation. There were about 15 cars from all over the island, and 2 from Vancouver. Pedestrians would point, wave and smile, which is a far cry from the trail of violence I would leave behind when driving my Beetle (a.k.a. punch buggy). We even passed a gaggle of Miatas heading the other way, obviously out on a Sunday afternoon rally like us!Colleen came along as my passenger. We swarmed Duncan City Hall and took pics of the small parking spots they've created for Smarties like us. I still can't believe how easy it is to park this car! It's only 8 feet long and I always think there is more length behind me than there actually is. Here we are in front of City Hall. Hymie (my car) is in the middle. More About: Chase , Chan , Hase
Got Smart
2005-11-05 01:01:00 After years of dreaming about owning a Smart car, I finally bought one!! I was going to name it "99" but when I got to the showroom and saw my vehicle in the spot of honour, front and central under the Smart sign, I realized "he" is masculine, gorgeous and robot-like. Not to mention a star. So he is "Hymie." My last car was a 1959 Beetle, affectionately known as Shake & Brake. It had no seatbelts, heat, turn signals or music. ANY car would have been a step up from that, but I've had my heart set on a Smart since I saw them in Europe years ago. Who needs a back seat anyway?? Hymie's my first new car -- and if he lasts as long as Shake & Brake, I'll be a little old lady terrorizing Victoria with my cute retro Smart.I joined the Smart car club and the Vancouver Island chapter (Smart Marmots) are having a rally this weekend. Yippee! Smarts traveling in formation! Film at eleven ...
happy b-day to me
2005-10-19 23:27:00 In recognition (denial?) of the fact that I'm a year older, I have given myself a sexier Weather Pixie. If you don't know what a Weather Pixie is, she lives in the sidebar to the right and reflects the current weather conditions where I am. Her clothes change with the weather. She's pretty hot for an, um, 39 year old eh? The other one didn't have much of a wardrobe. In fact, she only had 4 changes of clothes to last a whole year. I mean, really! Time for a makeover. The new one has a much bigger wardrobe, although I don't know how she's going to dance in those shoes:So far my b-day's going well, apart from the denial/shock thing. I still can't believe I'm old enough to be a grandmother when I feel so much younger than my chronological age. I was sung to by my father over the phone this morning, and Paul gave me a list of what other people have accomplished at my age courtesy of this website. I got some chocolate from Victoria's best Choco-latiere (thanks Kesh!) and a contr... More About: Happy

cats have staff
2005-09-27 20:36:00 Lately I've been spending too much time (OK work is really slow) browsing other blogs to get an idea of what's out there. Just like websites, there are BILLIONS of blogs. Apparently there's a new blog created every second. There's a lot of creativity, but as with everything else on the internet there's a lot of crap too. What interests me are bloggers obsessed about documenting aspects of their world in photos. I had the idea of posting one photo every day, until I saw that it's already been done by this photographer. I ran across someone who is posting photos of every meal he eats ... and it looks like he is spending a fortune in take-out food. The number of food bloggers is astounding. I particularly like The Girl Who Ate Everything -- a 19 year old woman in New York who writes hilarious articles and posts pics of her culinary adventures. Makes me hungry just looking at it.Many blogs are filled with adolescents going on about how bored they are with their lives, middle-aged f... More About: Cats , Staff
I asked you not to tell me that
2005-09-27 18:41:00 Don Adams passed away. "Get Smart" was part of my childhood (and now seems to be my mid-life-crisis anthem, as in Get A Smart Car). This obituary, written by Neil McMahon of the Sydney Morning Herald, had me chuckling.---He was the swinging bachelor with the groovy pad who couldn't walk up the stairs without falling down again; the debonair playboy who would pick up a martini and a cigarette and then slug the drink with the fag still in his mouth. There was a dash of Bond, a touch of Rat-Pack Sinatra, a bit of Inspector Clouseau, but in the end he was pure Maxwell Smart, agent 86. And now Don Adams is dead, to which millions find themselves saying: "I asked you not to tell me that."Have we ever loved a television character as much as this one? We laughed at him, and then laughed again and again, partly because you would have to be dead not to find him funny, but also because somewhere along the way we discovered we liked to speak like him. We could watch Get Smart a dozen times be... More About: That , Tell , Tell Me

More articles from this author:2005-09-14 21:02:00 Here's a pic of me and Shirley, the day we rented scooters and drove all over Victoria. This was taken on her phone/camera on top of Mt. Tolmie. We had a blast! It's the best way to see this city (in good weather). It has inspired me to get rid of my '59 Beetle (Shake 'n' Break) and buy a scooter..... I'm thinking of the 2006 Yamaha Vino ...
